At Tokyo Game Show, Falcom had a playable build of Ys Celceta: Sea of Trees. There were two options a field demo and a boss fight. Since I’m fond of Falcom’s big boss battles, I chose the latter option.

(Not the boss I fought, but this is another one of Ys Celceta’s water bosses.)

Adol, Dulen, and Ozma were in my party. A giant blue fish with a lantern on its head called Angoraboras (or something like that) was the enemy. I guess the lantern was the weak point so I ran up with Adol and started hacking away at the fish’s face. Dulen doesn’t have as much range since he fights with his fists. Ozma, on the other hand, has a spear and longer reach. While I chipped away at Angoraboras’ life bar, the creature tried to slap me with his giant fins and shot shot water cannonballs at me. After damaging Angoraboras enough it leaped out of the water above Adol and company to the other side of the lake. It swam underwater for a bit where I couldn’t hit it. Angoraboras reemerged with a vengeance and attacked furiously.

Somehow I managed to learn a new skill with Ozma in the midst of the chaos and charged up enough SP to do a super attack. I switched over to Adol who dove into Angoraboras. That still wasn’t enough to finish the huge fish off. The boss had about a 1/3 of its life bar left when my time was up. Fish 1, me 0.

It feels like Falcom made exciting boss battles for Ys Celceta: Sea of Trees and the game won’t be easy. Like other Ys games, Ys Celceta: Sea of Trees lets players choose a difficulty level ranging from Easy to Nightmare. The game comes out in Japan tomorrow.
