Shin Megami Tensei IV’s New Demons Are Made By Kamen Rider Creature Designers

By Spencer . October 12, 2012 . 11:30am

Atlus revealed five new demon designs and a couple of them have ties to the Kamen Rider series. Take Asmodeus, the king of demons in the Kabbalah, as an example. Yasushi Nirasawa who worked as a creature designer on Kamen Rider Kabuto and Kamen Rider Den-O created this demon’s design.

Kouga Saburou, a legendary hero from the Suwa domain, was created by Tamotsu Shinohara who worked on Kamen Rider OOO as a creature designer and a character designer on the Super Sentai series Go-Busters.

Kyouma Aki, a creature designer from Persona 4: The Animation and monster designer on Godannar, created Kuebiko. In Shinto, Kuebiko is the god of agriculture and knowledge.

Raphael, an archangel in Judeo-Christian texts, returns in Shin Megami Tensei IV with new artwork. Onimusha and tokusatsu series Kido Keiji Jiban character designer Keita Amemiya created the Shin Megami Tensei IV design.

Omoikane, the Shinto god of wisdom, also has new artwork for Shin Megami Tensei IV. Tokyo Gore Police director Yoshihiro Nishimura made Omoikane’s new design.

  • So they ruined the best Seraph, ruined one of my favorite demons and made a couple of demons that look more out of placed than … anything ever. Other than these horribly designed creatures, the games looks OK

    • Wait a little more. Maybe there’s a reason within the story for those designs

      • seraphinw1

I agree. considering Raphel’s appearance, something has clearly gone awry in YHVH’s neck of the woods.

    • Exkaiser

I much prefer this design for Raphael. Always thought the archangels had such bland designs.

But then again, not every angel can be Sandalphon. Now that’s a classy guy.

      •  Yeah, well I vehemently disagree, their original designs haven’t changed constantly or drastically for a reason. Japan pretty much hates these designs too so if the game sells like you know what because they’re mad at this change (for the worse) then I wouldn’t blame them if we don’t get it.

        • DemonKingAsura

          Pssh, hahahaha!

Japan, Hate Kamen Rider designs? If that were true, then why has kamen rider been around since the 60’s then, hmm?

          • I didn’t say they hated Kamen Rider designs, I said they HATE Kamen Rider designs IN SMT. They think it ruins the game even more than the fact that it’s on 3DS.

          • DemonKingAsura

Yeah right. They don’t hate it at all. In fact, they love it evven more because it’s on a portable system, because japan is obsessed with most Portable systems.

          • LightZero

You are clearly out of touch no offense. The Japanese loves the 3DS. Hell handhelds and smartphones are what popular in Japan. Console gaming has declined. The 3DS been dominating the sales charts. You should mistake your own personal grievances for something that isn’t true.

          • Aight I see you’re just talking out your butt now and don’t actually have any sources for your claims. The fact that it was on a portable was their MAIN concern if anything which is how I know you’re just spewing bs, whatever the game has a chance to be good but I doubt it will in the end thanks to all these abominations.

          • DemonKingAsura

Umm, The 3ds is one of the highest selling consoles in japan right now. They love it to death…

      • MrTyrant

I just want to see my lovely angel who looks like a blonde girl in chains. I hope they don’t change that xD

        • Julien_N

          Same here. XD
That said, this is a demon that previously had an other design (In SMT1 she wore a robe and didn’t have chains), thus meaning new designs are not always bad. (Speaking in general)

    • Spirit Macardi

I actually prefer it when the angels look less human, since they’re supposed to be their own entities. Granted I’d like the design to also be accurate to their original descriptions (much like what Bayonetta did), but I can’t say this new look is a bad one. If nothing else, it’s unique.

  • Sperium3000

Since it’s a videogame, the designers really went all out since they don’t have to worry about their creature designs being translated into live-action costumes. Kouga Saburou specially would look right at home as a Kamen Rider villain.

  • totally using raphael

  • Please tell me the Main Character can turn into a Kamen Rider, that would be soooo sick~

Anyway I’m digging the styles, the redesigns look also much better than their old ones and I say it’s about damn time the whole demon list gets a redesign, I can’t be the only one who is bored by the same designs in almost every game.

    •  There is so much wrong with this post I don’t even know where to start.. Must be a personage.

      • I don’t see anything wrong, my grammar is not the best but it should suffice~

        • Hraesvelgr

I’m fairly sure it was meant as some level of insult, not pointing out any grammar issues.

          •  lol

          • I perfectly know what he was trying to do, I just don’t have any interest in childish arguments.

        • The only problem I had was the main charecter turning into kamen rider(just doesen’t belong in a SMT game)

the Demons designs are more about taste, especially since some people prefer the classic designs compared to the new ones.

          • Lol the first part was a joke xD

I can understand that some of the old designs are liked, I like many myself, but at some point I get utterly bored by the same pictures in over I don’t even know how many games. Some fresh new wind is all I want~

          • oh lol sorry about that.

and I agree, having some new designs and colors is a great thing, especially if you played all the games they’ve been in(gets old after awhile)

I personally don’t see a problem with the new designs, I think they look nice.

          • Exkaiser

Wouldn’t be the first time Kamen Rider popped up in Megaten, though~.

      • Grenalie

        Oh boy, /smtg/ is here.

        • Exkaiser

What board is /smtg/ even attached to?

          • Grenalie

          • Exkaiser

            Ah, of course.

      • Hey, it’s not like the designs stayed absolutely consistent throughout the franchise’s history either. If they want to experiment, let them.

    • Exkaiser

To be fair, most of the demons have gone through two or three designs. All the recent games have settled on either Nocturne or Soul Hackers designs, though.

      • Like you said recent games use the same styles from years ago. I appreciate the changes that did happen, but nothing really happened in these past few years, except redesigns for MC demons in the Persona series.

  • Spirit Macardi

These guys do certainly have that sort of Sentai villain-ish look to them. Not sure about the new design for Omoikane though, I think I liked him better when he looked like the flying spaghetti monster.

    •  I can’t wait for them to reveal how they ruined Pixie so I can have a reason to not only not purchase the game but burn down Index Corps’ building

      • Relax, I bet there’s a reason for it

      • Shane Guidaboni

Wow, really? Everything they’ve revealed so far for this game has been fantastic. Don’t hop on the hate train over petty things.

      • Exkaiser

        Why are you so mad?

    • Revorse

Yeah, their Sentai/ Kamen Rider-ishness is pretty high in those pics.

  • Looks like Diablo’s out of a job, now that the Diablo trilogy has been wrapped up. How nice of Index to give him work.

    • Only to get beaten by teenagers and turn into his minion then a fusion fodder (if there one) XD

  • Suicunesol

I don’t like the top two designs too much (too sentai-ish), but the bottom 3 are pretty cool. Never played an SMT game, so I don’t have any nostalgic connections with the previous designs. I like the new Omoikane’s theme of scrolls and his mantis-like face. On the other hand, the old Omoikane has a rather clever design: a giant brain with many tentacles that have eyes, illustrating that it can see in many directions, coupled with additional dangling tentacles reminiscent of an old man’s wizened beard.

  • imaguni

I really like Raphael’s new design a lot! I like the fusion of demonic and angelic features a bit more compared to his initial design. And I really really like Kouga Saburou a lot!

  • Shane Guidaboni

I like the redesigns the best.

  • Kawens

I was feeling down because I don’t have a 3DS, but now I can rest. If they had hired Kaneko, maybe I’d even buy one to get this game. Not anymore.

    •  Even if game is excellent?

      • Kawens

Besides the new designs, the rest of the game seems great.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

You would buy a game depend on an artist?

      • Kawens

I was angry when I saw those designs, but the rest of the game seems really nice. So yeah, I hated those designs and I said that in spite, but now I want the game, and it may be the reason to even buy a 3DS (I don’t have one, still playing Persona 4 Golden, on 3rd playthrough).

  • MrTyrant

I like the new designs in general, I don’t like the new design of Raphael too much but never linked the old one so he is not important for me. I wonder, are the only new demons in this game bosses? I mean they could add more in the list that are fusion only or things like that.

    Still I miss Kaneko….A LOT.

  • Asmodeus is the demon of lust, that’s at least how I know him, he being the king of daemons is a title i wasn’t aware of :C.

  • I just can’t wait to pre order the usa version on play asia :3.

  • ahh… I liked Omoikane and Raphael as they were… =[ but it’s problably just for that game! =] and that means they have a larger role!

  • Tales_of_Master

I like Raphael the best out of all the new designs. His old design was defiantly good, but I don’t mind change. The only one I didn’t like was Omoikane. I liked his original design more, since it kinda pissed me off XD Especially after playing DDS, I just want to punch that thing.

All in all, SMTIV is shaping up to be just as good as the first three games. Hopefully, the gap between the JPN release and the U.S. release won’t be big.

  • kool_cid414

Much prefer the new omoikane and raphael but obviously that’s just my opinion. I agree that the others definitely have a tokusatsu feeling to it and I honestly like it. Hope to see if more demons get changes.

  • These demons look BOSS! But don’t ever change Tyrant Mara, he’s a 10/10 just the way he looks in Strange Journey.

  • I dunno I’m okay with the changes, since these are based on real life lore and such where their designs change all the time.  Just have to get used to it. Many demons change overtime in the same series.

  • Not a fan of the new Raphael and Omoikane designs, but I can totally live with that. The others do look cool in their own way.

It’s Shin Megami Tensei, it’s going to be awesome no matter what.

  • Isaac Newton

The designs are great but there not fit for the main SMT series
I don’t know why but I miss the old SMT design.

So any news or update why Kazuma Kaneko is not the main designer for SMY IV??

  • Kouga Saburou is ready for ski season XD

  • AnimusVox

I never really cared for Raphael’s original design to begin with but I’m not digging his new look either. I wonder if they’re going to change the designs for the 3 remaining archangels.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Omoikane actually looks much cooler there lol.^_^ The Raphael one does not as good as i thought as it seems out of place.T_T

  • Hinataharem

Doesn’t matter what they look like, they’ll be fusion fodder for something else.

  • Adam Primaeros

For some people, it’s not so much “It’s Changed Now It Sucks” as expecting some degree of mythological awareness being coded into the design. E.g. I made a case for lack of iconography for Asmodeus: (Click left/right arrows on the side of the image)

    • I like the rendition of Baal a lot. Could you be so kind as to inform me who the artist Mazeran is? Are these his personal works or are they from a game?

  • Kuoga Saburou does look like a Kamen Rider lol. So its a hero?? :P

Omoikane new design looks cooler than a brain. So I’m fine with it.

Kuebiko….I don’t see the “God of Agriculture and knowledge” in it….

Asmodeus looks boss!! Fitting for a king of demons. (What Kabbalah again??)

Raphael… they up the creepiness factor…. But its a redesign so YAY!

Hope we can see more of the redesigned/new demons. Personally I see nothing wrong with the design and I am not even a Kamen Rider fan.

    • Kabbalah is Jewish mysticism. It’s where Square-Enix lifted Sephiroth from, and from where Namco lifted major plot points for Tales of the Abyss.

  • neetyneety

Wow, some of those demon designs are downright gnarly…. I LOVE IT!

  • I will miss tentacle-brain-thing Omoikane. That is all.

    • DurableTomb

I will not, for it reminds me of those irritating, only-weak-to-guns, “metal slime” type monsters from Digital Devil Saga that gave me troubles.

  • Micah Gajewski

    absolutely love it!!!

  • ShinoZero

Sooooooo… Raphael came back from the Mass Effect world and became a Geth ?

  • ndjn3979

    Quite a sharp upgrade. Nice.

  • Not a big fan of Raphael’s design…it feels a bit strange to me. Loving the rest, though, especially Omoikane! Regardless of whether or not I like or loathe the rest, it’s just nice to see these demons reimagined.

  • Niyari

Why only change Raphael? Wouldn’t it make sense to change all 4 of the angels? Well, either way, I guess it doesn’t look that bad. And all of the other new demons look awesome, especially the updated Omoikane.

  • Demeanor

The new Omoikane reminds me of Titanite Demons from Dark Souls :P

  • DDanny

New Raphael doesn’t remind me of an archangel at all, besides the wings on the body face that is. Hell, even the mechanic angels like Metatron and Victor still managed to look like angels, this new Raphael just looks like some random robot to me.

  • I’m sorry. :( Most of them look like hellspawns conceived by Lord Zed and Rita Repulsa.

  • As much as I appreciate the new art direction, I wish something more could be done with the visuals in battle.

  • Kuebiko is pretty neat, but aside from him I don’t like any of these. They’re far too tokusatsu for me. I’d rather have demons inspired by myth rather than Kamen Rider.

  • Fidelis

I want to say good things about this game
    because it’s SMT

But really, the only design here I’m fond of is Kuebiko’s.

And I really, really don’t like Raphael’s redesign.

I’m sure the game itself’ll turn out great though
I’m just worried about the demons turning out to look like Sentai villains instead of mystical abominations.

I mean, for example, Asmodeus is supposed to be the avatar of lust.
Something involving phallic imagery would have made the design much more interesting
a la Incubus from previous Megaten games

    • “I mean, for example, Asmodeus is supposed to be the avatar of lust. Something involving phallic imagery would have made the design much more interesting a la Incubus from previous Megaten games”

Good point, but on the other hand, it’s not like the traditional depiction was giving an image of “lust” either. At least they carried over the “red humanoid demon lord” idea.

  • Huh… I like the designs, but I personally don’t think they fit SMT. But that’s just my opinion, of course. Besides, they’re really cool looking so I think I can manage. xD

  • Scallion

Was that Persona Quatro money really that tempting? I hate to be one of those guys that complains about the series changing to adapt to new markets, but…

  • Fryxell

    I’m a huge SMT fan and I don’t understand the haters at all. Some of them looks pretty awesome. The old Raphael always reminded me of Benimaru from KoF <_<;

  • ragingmerifes

The art just changed after few decades of stagnation and spin-offs. The main series didn’t sell that well in the West, so they need some kind of appeal. It has nothing to do with Persona. It is more about giving the worldwide fans something good and new while getting new fans. There is no point in going back in time to recruit every artist from 1992, hiring Aeon Genesis to localize it and still have the retro look everybody seems to be looking for while still selling.

  • burning steak

Where’s my Kaneko? Where are my phallic demon designs?
But seriously I dont mind some of the demons getting redesign as long they resemble to their original appearances and origins, but Raphael now looks like a Fallen angel more than a regular one, couldnt they just make Raphael with some sort of armor an keeping his holy and human appearance instead of that creepy and threatening figure? End of rant

  • Kawens

Hey, I know. It’s a barbecue. We have burnt bacon, beef jerky and even onions.
