Persona 5 Teased By Director Katsura Hashino… Again

By Ishaan . October 16, 2012 . 8:00am

Every so often, Persona series director, Katsura Hashino, happens to mention Persona 5 in an interview and then refrains from providing any further information. Today is one such day.

Speaking with science writer, Kaoru Takeuchi, about the Persona series in a feature, Hashino mentions that development of the next numbered Persona game is making progress.

Keeping with old habits, however, Hashino says that he can’t reveal any more at this time, but that Atlus will release further information when the time is right, and asks that people stay tuned.

As previously reported, Hashino will be returning as the director of Persona 5, and will be joined by Shoji Meguro as composer and Shigenori Soejima as character designer. Back in late 2011, Hashino also revealed that Persona 5 uses an internal Atlus engine.

  • I hope P5 gonna go back to the dark atmosphere just like P1 and P2 (P3 is around in the middle I guess). I don’t really like the “happy” atmosphere in P4 =P

    • Mr_SP

…You mean, other than the murders? Though I suppose deceit and confusion aren’t as clearly “dark” as “end of the world” is.

      • JazzWithAttitude

I seriously don’t know what i prefer, both P3 and P4 as great but P4 combined with me, the story can “happens” to anyone

    • XiaomuArisu

       Yes,because murder is happy!XD
Who wants to talk about murder?

      •  Me ! Me ! Meeeeeee ! :D

      • LightZero

P4 is essentially the Japanese Scooby Doo. Sure it has its a murder mystery game but the game didn’t take itself too seriously. The game is very light-hearted especially compared to the other megaten entries. SMT1 makes P4 looks like a rated G movie in comparison. Hell there are plenty of non-megaten titles that are much darker. I don’t even consider P3 dark either.

P4 atmosphere is alright but I definitely want the series to go back to the original trilogy style along with having P2’s writing.

        • I thought 4 was very dark for goodness sake schollmates got killed freinds git kidnapped by a phycho and even someone who is like a little sister gits kidnapped and almost killed it does not git much darker then that

    • Lunar_Outcast

      I completely agree.

    • The thing is P1 and P2 were closer to the SMT series and Persona kind of branched off at 3 and then 4.

    • Go2hell66

eh i thought p3 was pretty dark as well? i wouldn’t call p4 sunflowers and sunshine  either, at least when compared to other rpg’s

  • Shane Guidaboni

Ah! This isn’t news. We all know P5 is coming. When exactly will the time be right to reveal information? Any time is a good time if you ask me.

  • OatMatadoQuatro

So will the first image or teaser be revealed in 2012?

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Put your hype hats on. It’s about to go down.

  • I’ve been saying this a lot lately, but… Shaddap and take my money! XD

    • JazzWithAttitude

Take my money as well please.

  • Tales_of_Master

Well, I have no idea what kind of game Persona 5 will be, but I can’t imagine how awesome it’s gonna be to play a Persona game on the big screen.
I think Atlus won’t release any info on P5 until they get P4G out of the way, and maybe even wait until SMTIV is released in Japan. Good thing we have all these Atlus goodies to hold me up until P5 is officially unveiled.
Hopefully Atlus will release some info before the end of the year.

  • DiosFancifulRomp

Oh, odd numbered Persona entries, how you take forever to come out.

  • Lets hope it won’t be “making progress” for over 5 years, like a certain game we know :p

    • Shiki

That’s the only thing that popped-up in my mind when i read  “making progress”

    • LynxAmali

       Duke Nukem Forever?

      • Kefkiroth

DNF was actually released. He’s talking about another infamous vaporware…

  • DesmaX

It doesn’t matter how long it will take, it will be worth it

    I hope

  • Nicholas Gatewood

I really hope this hits the Vita, that’d rock so much.

    • puchinri

It’d be cool to have it be available on PS3 and Vita~. (And maybe a WiiU port too would be nice, though I doubts that.)

  • Raze

    Take your time Atlus…
You’ve got all my money for P5…
Oh and maybe for next Devil Summoner too…

  • LightZero

They are probably going to wait until SMT4 is release. Rightfully so because unfortunately the main entries aren’t as popular as this spin-off series. P5 would steal SMT4’s thunder. I hope Atlus announce a new entry to Devil Survivor or Devil Summoner soon.

    • puchinri

It would be cool to see a modern or futuristic Demon Summoner that’s closer to the Raidou stuff~.

      • LightZero

I agree. I like Raidou but I actually would like to see like a modern Devil Summoner. He could be Raidou’s successor (descendant) as well.

        • puchinri

That would be really cool as well~!

  • doubletaco

Woah, you mean they’re making a Persona 5?

    What a shocker!

  • dahuuuundge

let me know when there’s a a release date. this has been teased so many times already

I’d hold out hope that in the intervening time the team would have come to discover a number of novel mid 80’s to late 90’s innovative concepts such as “level design”, “realtime RPG combat” and less is more “streamlined narrative” but then the RPG genre is content to mire in the late 70’s dark ages of electronic tabletop conversions like Ultima and Wizardry.

As long as the nostalgic fans are kept happy, and the anime narrative flows thickly then the niche thrives in all its stagnant glory I suppose.

  • I’m glad that they are giving us updates on Persona 5 nonetheless.

Although all the stories in the Persona games turn out really good and I love them all, I’m kinda hoping that this Persona will take a darker more serious route, Meow! Not to say that I want the series to change its aura completely, but just one of the games. If not this one then maybe the next one. Maybe something similar to how the feel of the Shadow Hearts series was. Nya! =^_^=

    •  What? I thought the games had already had dark moments – they just add it with light-heartedness, no problem, right? I mean, are you assuming that light-hearted stories can’t be serious – is becoming dark and edgy really necessary? I mean, even Tales of Symphonia (extremely light-hearted) had tragic and serious moments.

      • I’m not saying that at all and I agree with you, BUT I want dark, dark, Dark Souls, Demon Souls, Soul Sacrifice dark. Just for one game lol. Maybe in this type of game our characters would only be able to summon their personas by using their own blood =^_^=

        •  Well, you can always play the Shin Megami Tensei games if you want Hardcore darkness >:3!
To be honest, regarding JRPGs in general, I don’t mind them to be darker. Hell, they can have things like rape, torture, suicide, et cetera. However, I’m just more interested in how a story of such tragic proportions can be dealt with in a positive way instead of merely concluding that the world is a piece of crap and THAT THERE’S NO HOPE, MUHAHAHAAH PESSIMISM RULES.

However, because the Tales games (atleast Symphonia and Abyss), Xenoblade Chronicles and Persona games contain both bad moments, tragedies AND funny, friendship, love moments — they show this wonderful balance of light and darkness which fortunately leans more towards optimistic mentality than pessimism.
Maybe it’s just a matter of taste, but I am more in favour of light-in-the-darkness stories than grim-in-the-darkness stories.

          • I do like the light-in-the-darkness stories more than the straight out darkness ones, but I guess I would just like to see how it would work in a Persona game. It just seems that in most stories nowadays you can just tell that the protagonists are going to win. I just see a darker story being able to do away with that, and just leaving a victory up for grabs lol

        • puchinri

I think the first two were more that route, but at the same time, isn’t that what SMT and other related titles are for? I half agree and half feel that the Persona games should stay a bit more light-hearted.

  • Epic Markell Joshua

    I want p5 o; wish it was muti-console release

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

    • Neophoton

I’d be shocked if it weren’t, given Catherine was PS3/360 and was the Persona team’s test title.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    I could wait……..

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

After finishing the anime for a second time on tonight, I must say Im pretty hyped for this fifth entry and seeing who and which character types they bring to the table.

Really hope some of the dialogue is handled better.

  • TheSwordUser

    I’ll just leave that here

  • drproton

I hope they don’t get too far stuck in the success of P3/P4 and not consider anything other than a high school setting.

    • Detrimont

at least they’re not releasing a AWESOME!!! trailer and then not releasing it for 6+ years

    • Göran Isacson

On the one hand a little variety would be neat… but on the other hand ALL Persona games have been set in a high school setting. So while I’m all for new environments I don’t think you can blame that solely on P3/P4.

      • LightZero

Correction all except Eternal Punishment was set in HS. Even then in P1 and Innocent Sin HS weren’t the main focus of the game unlike P3/P4. So they could easily do another adult cast if they wanted to.

  • Atlus. Please. No. I LOVE YOU, and I don’t want to see you adopt the Square Enix tradition of over-hyping games.

  • Neophoton

I’d just want them to start getting out info shortly before the game’s ready to be properly teased. None of this “tease info 6 years before the game’s even remotely ready” nonsense that leads to overhyping for any games, even if I trust Atlus won’t do a bad job, but still…

    • ChromeOrihara

I wouldn’t say that this sort of teasing would lead to over-hyping,since he is withholding all information on it other than that it is being worked on.I don’t see how it is possible to hype, let alone over-hype a game we know absolutely nothing about except the name.Although, like you said,it is most likely still not even remotely ready,so I don’t see why he bothers to tease us about it.

  • shaolinsword

Do the games in the Persona series relate to each other? It seems like I missed out on a lot after watching Persona 4 videos/anime so wouldn’t mind picking the fifth game up

    • Yes, some more directly than others but 5 seems like it might tie everything together. P4 Arena’s story mode is related too, don’t want to spoil that for anyone who hasn’t played it.

      • I don’t really know about that, I think P4A will continue with somting like “P4A 2” or somthing along those lines.

but I woulden’t mind if a certain enemy made an appearence in P5.

        • You got a point there, I didn’t even consider that they might do another.

          • JazzWithAttitude

I thought the same, Persona 4 The ultimate in mayonaka arena ultimate edition?

          • LightZero

They might but then again they might not. I kind of doubt it myself. I see P4A as the P4 version of the Answer. Or to use KH as the example, the CoM/KH3D to P5’s KH2/KH3.

        • LightZero

They don’t have much of a story reason to do P4A2. It made sense the first time around. Not to mention the certain enemy is way too good of a villain to be regulated to a meager fighting game. NO this enemy needs to be the main villain of P5.

I see P5 being the game that connects the previous 5 games.

          •  Oh you know I hope the Elizabeth story arc is canon!

    • Blesmi

They all take place in the same world (kind of), but other than some cool references you probably wouldn’t be missing much. Although Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment are directly related, you can still play one without the other and get everything.

    • LightZero

They are all set in the same world. The original trilogy (P1, IS, and EP) are more connected story wise. You could say IS and EP are parallel worlds but you need to play IS to understand. P3 also made references to past characters as well. P4A seems to have a few familiar faces in the Shadow Operative if the silhouettes are any indication.

The main villain of the P2 duology also seem to be have return in P4A. He might even had some influence on the Dark Hour and old man Kirijio nihilism.

      • Jesse Thompson

P4A definitely linked P3 and P4, P4 even had a cameo appearance of a character from P3.  But if you HAVEN’T played P4A yet, you need to go complete the entire story mode and then wait with baited breath for P5.  I foresee P5 being a direct descendant of P3 and P4 combined.

  • Shadowman

    I’m waiting…….

  • AlexanderPappas

Okay I’m guessing that we won’t hear anything about it until 2013.

  • Spider-Man

    Sexually frustrated at this point.

  • I know the main character of Persona games is always a blank slate with an already created design, but… wouldn’t it be much cooler if we could customize the main character to a very huge extend (hair colour, gender, eye colour, skin colour, et cetera — character choices and personality could also be part of it, but hey, isn’t that already in Persona games ;) ? ).
I mean, what will we lose?
The only difference is that the ‘silent’ protagonist is customizable instead of being some pre-made character design.

    • Patrick Almanzor Nocum

Well it’ll be hard to create an anime version if thats gonna happen, and we may not be able to develop a strong attachment or love towrads the main character because of diffrnt looks

      • Okay, but the main purpose of the MC is giving the player that he or she is the MC – and I believe that if we give the player the option to customize the character to a great extend, we’d be more likely to see the MC as ourselves.
It’s like with Pokémon. Both MCs of their games are blank slates filled by the interaction of the player, making it the player’s story – so I don’t see the big deal (okay about the anime: they can always use a generic or default design of the MC. Like in Tales of the World Radiant Mythology. In that game, you can create your very own MC, but the offical artwork has their own interpretations of how your MC could or should look like.

        • Testsubject909

I would like to argue, people tend to not think of Themselves in the game, but rather their Avatar in the game. It’s a slight difference. It’s as if you were a god and chose your champion to represent you, a champion who you would directly command and direct. That is the role of the MC for most people playing their games. They don’t think of themselves in the game, but they consider the choices they would do pertaining to the situation.

As such, the ability to customize your MC is more fluff then anything else, it’s to make your (forcefully) chosen character to represent you better visually, though ultimately it is just fluff.

And anyways, characters are rarely ever blank slates. There are always little traits of their personality that pierces through due to certain details of their backstory when present or how characters react to them or how they react to their environment. Even little details like how they fight can give them characteristics and personality beyond what you would project unto them.

TL;DR: Your request will most likely be denied.

          • Okay, but a lot of games with these avatars and high customize options give you this feeling of insertion: making you feel that YOU are part of the story.
You see, it was amazing the character customization of Dragon Quest 9, but I’d rather want to see that within the Persona-verse.
Why? Because if you think about it, the concept of Persona 3 (and 4) is brilliantly amazing! ‘Go to highschool, make friends, fight demons and save the world!’
Most of us can say how it feels to be or have been in High School, but nobody can really say that they’re some fallen angel or the son of a legendary warrior/hero/god.
What’s more fascinating is that in the Persona universe, you don’t have to be some chosen one or child of a mystical being/villain/god/hero to become a hero yourself (For example: Junpei of P3. He’s really your average high school student, but he obtains magic powers and he becomes a hero – isn’t that cool?)
When I played Persona 3 (still playing though), it really gave me this sense of immersion/insertion. I felt part of the game. Hell, I had the feeling that Minato (P3 MC) was me, considering the dialogue trees.
However, something withhold me to really immerse myself in the game: the option to make the character look more like you.
I mean, EVEN if it’s fluff, what’s wrong about it. The skits of Tales Of are also fluff in some ways, but people love them. What about P3 Portable which gave you the option to play a female MC which isn’t even part of the Persona Canon.
Even if Persona 5 won’t grant the player access to MC customization appearance-wise, I still hope they’ll make a Persona spin-off or something similar to Persona 3/4 that really gives the player that it’s him/her who’s part of the group, part of the story, part of the romance and friendship plots, et cetera.

I mean, I’d rather want to be a the high school student version of myself who’s chasing girls and demons than some Über-Silent Protagonist who suffers from amnesia and is in fact some angel being.

          • Completely agree.Even if it’s just gender and hair, eye and skin color. The game feel like a anime, but I miss the fact I don’t feel “me” playing,it feels like I’m watching the story of this random guy.
I hope they give us the chance to role play more with a own character, rather then playing an already made silent boy.

    •  I don’t agree in this ,[In my opinion (and only mine)] If the game (will) have anime then I want the MC to have the trait of the anime more, I want the ability to play the game storyline as well as the ability to change the anime storyline.

But I’m alright with customizing the hair Clothes and the likes

  • amagidyne

Looking forward to it. I hope that P5 is as weird and divergent as the rest of the series, but even if it isn’t, I’ll still probably love it. This is a team I trust completely.

  • Nitraion

Man i really-really miss SMT series(all of them) in console…..

  • I hope we dont get another yukari!…Nasty! XP

But if another Mitsuru comes around or maybe Yukiko, Id be so HappY!!! :D

    • EtherealEarth

      No love for Fuuka? :(

Her bentos and present are amazing!

      • Spider-Man

        Eugh, Fuuka!?

    • Ridho Siregar

      I like Yukari.. :(

    • Jesse Thompson

It’s all about Mitsuru!  Punishment time!  Yukiko was a little quiet and shy, but I loved her character design.  Yukari definitely felt like one of those “stuck-up” girls, but I didn’t hate her…

      Now Ken…urgh.

  • Maia Kasoya

I know for sure P5 will NOT disappoint.

  • Hinataharem

    Hope its graphically like Catherine

    • Ridho Siregar

Totally support this. We’ve seen they did well with the 3D graphics of SMTIV. Now just add Soejima’s touch to that technology just like Catherine and put it in the home consoles.

    • Jesse Thompson

I’d love to see some more Catherine-esque games, I honestly thought that’s where they were going with the “Golden Theater” thing.

  • imaguni

“Persona 5 Teased By Director Katsura Hashino… Again” see, that kinda killed the excitement for me but I hope we’ll hear something soon regardless.

  • kratoscar2008

    Persona 5=FFvsXIII

Please i need at least the logo of P5 this year otherwise ….

    • be patient m’ friend… it’s not like there’s only two months of this year….

      Wait !! we at October??

    • Jesse Thompson

Kratoscar2008, your mathematical equation is a little off imho. :3

      Persona 5 > FFvsXIII

(~.~)/  I mean, really…I haven’t enjoyed a FF game since 10, and I hated Tidus.  He was like a loud-mouthed Cloud, all sittin’ in the corner with his Buster Sword going to town on his wrists…

  • Ridho Siregar

Agh.. tease… again. At least it hasn’t become like Versus.

  • Isaac Newton

Ohhh GOD please Mr. Hashino next time you made an interview please give us a slight trailer of the game….

  • Blaze Townsend

I await you Person V! Your presence is required to ease my mundane life! Ok, so maybe my life isn’t so mundane, but I would like to see you released soon…

  • Brandon001

God, i think i want this more than Versus tbh, gonna keep waiting.

  • I honestly don’t think this will end up as Versus lol. At least wait for another 5+ year then declare it.

  • I just wanna know if this will finish the Persona 3, Persona 4, Persona 4 Arena story arc. Persona, Persona 2: Innocent Sin, and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment were all in the same universe and one connected story, so I’m guessing one more RPG to finish the second trilogy? I mean, considering how Arena wrapped up…

    • Crok425

If P5 was like a direct sequel it would be called Persona 4: *insert made up name here*. Every Persona that has a different number has a different story, P2 had P1 characters but P2 had its own story… you can say that the P1 characters were like filler :P. Anyway, P5 is going to have a new protagonist and possibly some cameos of other Persona characters.

      • A: the events of P3 have effected P4.
B: there are literally no details about this games. Please don’t assume. C: my point is still valid, as P5. can still deal with the fallout of the previous two games.

At no point did I say “direct sequel”. I said “finish the story arc” which is altogether possible again considering the end of P4A and the massive mainstream popularity of P4. For them to not partially tie to that game would be a waste of brand awareness.

        • chris99x

It does not matter that P3 affected P4. Each numbered game is its own story arc.

          • Forget it. If you aren’t going to read what I’m typing, just don’t bother.

          • chris99x

I did read what you wrote. Based on what we’ve seen, there is NO reason to presume that they’ll tie up anything from P4 in a newly numbered game. Of course it’s possible, but not very likely.

          • And there’s no reason it can’t either. “Based on what we’ve seen” Would that be the nothing? Or the other nothing? Congratulations. Neither one of us knows anything about a game that neither one of use knows anything about. My first comment, the own where I *wondered* if P5 would be the third game in the second trilogy, still stands. Furthermore, given Persona’s track record of referencing back to earlier entries, what with P2 getting characters from P1, P3 having a “Where are they now?” with the P2 characters, and P4 having a visit to P3’s town as well as the playable P3 characters in P4A, it’s more likely than not that P5 will have something to do with the fallout of the last two games, especially considering that the last two games were where Persona and the Shin MegaTen franchise broke into the zeitgeist.

          • chris99x

Based on what we’ve seen FROM THE SERIES. Obviously we haven’t seen the game yet, were you actually serious with that comment? And if it’s “more likely than not” than why did you even ask? I don’t understand why you’re so angry. You were also pissy toward the first person that replied to you. You obviously lack a point to ANYTHING you’ve said, so get over yourself and goodbye :)

          • buhbye.

          • No davis, I heard from Hashino himself that Persona 5 will be an alternate ending to the pokémon black and white trilogy and it will be released on the Wii U, so it won’t have anything to do with P4 or P3.

  • Still wonder about which console?

    • Crok425

PS3 possibly. Catherine was a test for P5 so it’s kind of obvious, but who knows, a lot of people thought that SMTIV would also be for PS3 and that Kaneko was going to make the designs… you know how that turned out :P. But it’s better than not having it.

  • Crok425

You know… this is the kind of thing that makes me think.
”If you’re not going to reveal anything… why the hell do you this kind of news Hashino!?”
    Dear god… dat logic…

  • Wanderer

Over the course of the Persona series many aspects of the Jungian theory have been explored; I really think that the next series will have an older Protagonist; maybe he will have a certain psychosis, allowing him to use the Wild Card ability.
Maybe Atlus is more into creating a more direct sequel, creating a direct bridge between the past titles; maybe some of the cast getting together after the Arena events.
Whatever they choose to do, I can’t help but think that the P5 will be great, lets hope it we get to know more after the hype from SMT4 has weakened.

  • Taking a wild guess here, but does anyone else get the feeling that p5 will pick up where p4 arena left off? The picture shows what looks like Yu (p4 main character) sitting with a new character at Junes. Also, p4 arena is “incomplete,” not telling the whole story. A combo of p3 and p4 characters would totally rock (Aegis fan).
