Between 600,000 To 1 Million People Watch Nintendo Direct Videos In A Week

The frequency with which Nintendo release their Nintendo Direct presentations has increased of late, and for good reason. Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, shared with investors that as many as 600,000 to 1 million people watch the Nintendo Direct videos in a week.

The Nintendo Direct presentations involve Iwata himself speaking to viewers about the latest first-party and third-party software in the works for Nintendo devices, along with trailers for the aforementioned, as well as information on upcoming services, firmware updates for Nintendo devices, and more.

“Each time we do a Nintendo Direct broadcast, more people visit the Nintendo eShop to download game demos and 3D videos, and it has become clear that it also leads to a higher use rate of the hardware, and even higher hardware sales,” Iwata said to investors at a Q&A. “This convinces us that it is worthwhile to do regular broadcasts.”

Iwata shared another interesting fact—a recent Nintendo Direct presentation for Animal Crossing: New Leaf that was streamed in Japan has accumulated over 1.1 million views since it was shown. Iwata points out that this was a full 47-minute presentation, and that 65% of views were from smartphone devices. The video even made it into the YouTube charts, indicating that, if the circumstances are right, Nintendo Direct videos can go beyond the audience of dedicated gamers.

However, Iwata feels, Nintendo will have to continue to innovate with Nintendo Direct presentations themselves as well, if they want to keep people’s interest in the long term.

“Just as some marketing methods lose their appeal over time, people will become bored if we simply continue to do the same thing, as is the case throughout the entertainment industry,” Iwata cautioned. “In a sense, I feel that Nintendo Direct has an entertainment aspect too, so I think the challenge is whether we can continue to innovate successfully.”

“I find these bananas to be………unnatural” Seriously though why with the bananas >___<

    • Elemiel

He’s performing Shakespeare’s Hamlet in Donkey Kong country, I assume.

  • Hoshi星

I love all those Nintendo Direct. News directly from Iwata itself. We don’t see much of the other CEOs announcing or showing games for their console.

    • Samurai_Heart

Hmmm just imagining if Microsoft or Sony did that they’ll probs try to act or edgy >.< I cringe even imagining it. It's like that kid Marcus for PSP all over again XD.

      • If Sony announce their Direct show blah blah with Kaz himself directly I’ll piss my pant.

        • Samurai_Heart

Oooh the amount of meme the internet will gain XD

  • malek86

On a similar note, I wonder how many people are using the Nintendo Video service.

    • Samurai_Heart

If only they added things like Nintendo Direct instead of clips of pretty much adverts XD and clips that lasts only 2 mins or so, in the UK the bottom right videos have become a permenant residence for Sky 3D commercial content.

    • Ferofax

I like it a lot. Dinosaur Office & Meat or Die is definitely worth keeping Nintendo Video for.

    • kylehyde

I didn’t use it too much, of all the services probably is my least favorite of all, the only enjoyable thing were the kid icarus shorts, but aside of this, theres not much for me. I hope someday nintendo decides to put a youtube app.

What’s with the banana? Is Donkey Kong coming back or what?

    • 9thsage

IIRC after a recent(ish) mostly Wii U related Nintendo Direct he was inexplicably holding them and giving them the eye like you see in the picture.  I think it might have been after Nintendo Land’s DK attraction was shown, but I honestly forget.  What I do remember is that it was pretty hilarious. :D

Im actually curious to see some reports on how often the 3D effect is actually used when it comes to gaming on the 3DS and for how long in a period of play. Ive been wondering about this since out of the games ive played on the device I have yet chosen to use it,it hurts my eyes within seconds For me its not a very worthwhile feature and while I know probably the majority of people  use it I am still curious for how long in a play period it gets used for.
The games do look cool with the effect in place yes but if the effect is not being used is it even worth the money it costs to implement it on the device and have games make use of it?

    • Ferofax

It doesn’t cost devs anything to turn an already 3D game into stereo 3D, as it’s just another POV to add, a second camera. The trick is getting the right angle so that 3D looks impressive without inducing nausea/motion-sickness/etc. 2D games are a different story though, but 2D layering is common enough to not make stereo 3D a problem.

Implementation (or non-implementation) of 3D on the 3DS is a moot point. It’s a 3D-enabled gaming device. Use it or no, it’s there.

Of course, Nintendo’s localization manager noted that a noticeable portion of the Japanese Nintendo direct viewers were Americans (and probably Europeans) during the last American Nintendo Direct.

  • Edit: whoops, this comment was meant to be a reply.

As long as they have new games to report on, Nintendo Direct will never get old or lose the mini-E3 feel. :)

  • kylehyde

Certainly the nintendo directs have an impact bigger than I expected. The only downside (maybe) is that with the constant flow of information, theres not many surprised to show in big events like the E3. Anyway, I enjoy them and is good to have many mini parties instead of waiting for the big one that could end in disappointment.

    • ForteWily

That is true, but I have often wondered if Nintendo would not be better served striking out on there own from E3/Gamescom and the like. Similar to what they do around TGS.

  • SirRichard

Frankly if things like the header happen every now and then, the Directs would just be plain wonderful.

I really like the Directs already, myself, there’s something incredibly relaxing about soft-spoken Japanese men telling me about things I can buy soon.
