By Ishaan . October 30, 2012 . 7:39am

A Dragon Quest VII remake is headed to the Nintendo 3DS, according to the latest issue of Jump magazine in Japan. The game will be a 3D remake of the original PlayStation game and will allow for the exchange of “lithographs” between players via StreetPass.

Dragon Quest VII on 3DS is actually not very far from release—Square Enix have it slated for February 2013 in Japan.

how well does Dragon Quest do now days?

i know they got the mmo but I not seen a lot of new things with Dragon Quest.

    • Alex Hawrylyshyn

I assume you’re not asking how well it’s doing in Japan, where it’s so huge they close down businesses for the day whenever a new game comes out.

In North America, DQ games sell about as well as any RPG with anime characters on the cover- not well. (The exception being IX which did pretty decently due to good marketing and a strong multiplayer component)

    • SantiagodelosSantos

Pretty well, it’s still one of the biggest franchises in Japan

    • KiTA

It remains the most popular RPG series in Japan, beating out FF, SMT, Pokemon, etc by a long shot.

The MMORPG is going well.  They also recently remade the first monster catching game with modern updates (but retained the roguelike aspects). In short DQ is doing great, as usual.  No word on a new non-mmorpg main series game, but that’s likely a few years out at least.

  • MrRobbyM

    Oh god yes.

  • Marik78

    • SantiagodelosSantos

      What’s wrong?

      • Tom_Phoenix

Perhaos he/she is trying to express his/her disappointment over the platform without breaking the rules.

        • KiTA

Actually, he’s probably upset that the “popular JRPG series with 7 in it’s title getting a remake” rumor turned out to be DQ7 and not FF7 (like many had hoped).

  • Foryth

About time this game got some more attention!  I still play my PS1 version to this day.  Last playthrough at 150+ hours and I still have a lot of sidequests to finish(damn that monster park) and I still have to beat the boss! (then there’s the bonus dungeon!)

    • lordroto

the game doesn’t get much attention because it’s not convienent to play, to track down a good working copy is expensive lol

      • It can be rather pricy, yeah, especially given how it’s a shock that there’s no PSN version of it yet. Though the copy I picked up was around $52 off of Amazon– perfectly working copy! But the casing was broken. I had to order a replacement case for it.

  • Tales_of_Master

Well, I guess now’s as good a time as any to get into the DQ series :D I’ve been meaning to play one of DQ games on the DS but never got around to doing it. Hopefully this remake will get localized. You can never have too many JRPGs.

    • MrRobbyM

I highly recommend DQ VIII. It’s arguably the pinnacle of the series.

      • KiTA

Eh, I donno about that.  9 was fine.  10 appears to be a really well done MMORPG, much better than FF11.

        • MrRobbyM

“9 was fine”. Which is my point. DQVIII brought in a lot of new fans in NA while still staying true to itself. 9 being “fine” and 10 being an MMORPG is my point.

          • KiTA

But, here’s the thing.  9 was good.  Really really good.  It mechanically was a remake of 3, reusing a lot of 3’s systems and style of gameplay, updated to 3D.  I think it helped bring just as many people into the series as 8 with it’s FF12 demo did.

          • MrRobbyM

Oh. I thought you said it was fine. Which I agreed with.

I didn’t think 9 was all the fun. It had some okay ideas but I preferred 8 more overall.

  • OMG YES.
I still have my original copy of it too.

  • I basically screamed on the inside when I found out about this. I bought the PS1 version of it this year and it DEFINITELY needed an upgrade! I can’t wait until this is localized.

  • Elvick

I really should pick up the DS remakes soon.

    • Barrylocke89

      Yes, you really should.

  • Zero will probably be very pleased with this, I assume~ :P

  • kylehyde

Yes. I hope it gets localized and soon (the DS remakes took ages from being localized), certainly this is a nice chance for every person that becomes enamored of this franchise not so many years ago and didn’t play the original titles and for the people who desire to live again this epic adventure.

  • kupomogli

This is the best Dragon Warrior game in my opinion.  Sadly, Square Enix has no originality and can’t make a good new JRPG even if their lives depended on it, I’ll purchase this because of how great a game it is.

I just hope that you can transfer characters over infrastructure wifi when creating your own town, or else it’ll take quite awhile to get every single custom town.  I got tired of leaving town reentering town repeatedly and still not finding the last couple types I needed that I created a new character, got to the point I could create my town, got those certain people, and then traded them over to my other town.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Considering they just come out with Bravely Default, i will said you are wrong there lol.

      • kupomogli

Like I said.  Square Enix has no originality and can’t make a “good” new JRPG even if their lives depended on it.

Kidding. I’ve yet to play Bravely Default, but I’m also fairly certain that most people haven’t either as it just came out, it’s Japanese, and those that are fluent in Japanese still have to wait for shipping.

That being said, just because the game is being released doesn’t mean it’s any good. How many games have you played that may have looked like they were good turned out to be a**? I’ll say quite a few in my opinion. Many were Square Enix titles that were released this gen.

So what I said still stands. A 38/40 Famtisu score means nothing. There are plenty high ranking scores that were complete sh**. It’s called Famitsu getting a big fat check in the mail in compensation for high scores. Anyone remember how rare a perfect Famitsu score was? This gen, those perfects have been given away like candy.

        • I don’t think air quotes are supposed to be used in that way . _.

but yeah, Bravely Default is pretty awesome, if you were referring to it not being all that original. . . well, you’re going to buy a remake, so you seem to literally want more of the same.

        • Suicunesol

I don’t know–38/40 seems like a score that’s good but not unrealistically good. I also don’t know if paying Famitsu for a good score would have been monetarily worth it for Bravely Default, as opposed to a Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. Also, SQ didn’t seem to anticipate demand for BD, so they may not have been expecting to sell very many.

In any case, it would be nice if you could entertain the notion that perhaps every once in a while SQ does make something really good. :( SQ’s handheld division appears to have a much more decent track record.

        • Grenalie

From the people I’ve talked to it seems to be pretty good.

    • The World Ends With You, says hello.

  • lordroto

it will probubly take awhile too, there’s a lot to do with the localizations and most of the DQ games take about a year or more

  • Shadowman

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

With this game, it is more or less sure that 3DS will do very well again lol.

  • $36598391

OMG This is so awesome, i just hope it will get released in North America
Square Enix seems to not care about bringing the Wii Collection of the first three Dragon Quest games to North America

    • Pyrotek85

I think it’s likely, the DS got the IV, V, and VI remakes and all were localized, and we didn’t miss out on IX either.

      • Grenalie

We still have no word on Terry’s Wonderland.

        • KiTA

If you believe the rumor mill, someone claiming to be a Nintendo Marketing Employee made an anonymous claim that Terry’s Wonderland is being localized at the express instruction of Iwata, who loves the game and believes Dragon Quest is destined for success in the US.

At the same time he claimed that the WiiU would have Gamecube games in the online download ship, that there may be a Wavebird coming for the Wii/WiiU, and hinted at a Monster Hunter persistent world MMORPG for WiiU.

          • Grenalie

Sorry but I can’t believe any “official” from /v/, I see them so much and they’re rarely right.

  • Brimfyre

I’ve only played DQ V, VIII, and IX.  Which is the next one I should tackle before this comes out?  V was my favorite because I am a sucker for love stories, but I am told it is the only one like that.

    • SprintsMcGee

Go for either IV or VI.

    • mark zeus lee

       go for VI

    • mark zeus lee

       go for VI

    • Zero_Destiny

Dragon Quest V is really the only mainline game with a focus on creating a family. Honestly if I had to recommend a game based off what you said I would say to stick with the DS line of games.

The games that come before Dragon Quest IV can be rather archaic for many modern gamers. While Dragon Quest I-III are pretty good and hold up alright they are still at their core very basic games that were created at a time when the genre was still in its infancy. So they may put off more modern gamers. Though III’s job system for its time was rather well done and many fans highly regard it. But what I’m trying to get at is that your enjoyment of the older games really depends on your penchant for leveling grinding and love for random battles as well as willingness to not have your hand held or a story that is full of many twist and turns.

IV and VI would probably be a good place to start looking and if you enjoy that maybe try out more from there. With Dragon Quest IV the series got more story focus, IV is about playing through multiple story lines that all converge into one at the end. VI is one of my favorite actually and has a pretty interesting story with a focus on two worlds and illusions and such. VI also features another job system which can make the game a bit more grind-y then IV so your mileage will vary on how much you enjoy that.

Oh and before I forget, if romance and starting a family is something that interest you then you may want to also check out the Rune Factory series as well if you haven’t already. They are more of a Life-Sim/Action-RPG but the Life elements may interest you.

  • This is gonna sell so much it’s not even funny.

  • isotrex

They’re really rockin’ the 3DS library.

  • komiko12

Seems that Square Enix is handling Dragon Quest better than Final Fantasy.

    • admeister

Maybe if you count ‘handling it better’ as simply re-releasing old titles in 3D. If that’s your criteria, then they’re doing just as well with FF. So, when are we getting DQX again? :P

      • komiko12

My criteria is the reputation of both franchises.

And clearly, Dragon Quest’s name is not as damaged as FF’s

    • Areuto

Well what would you prefer? final fantasy games after X or any of the dragon quest titles? I’d take my chances with VII over 13 for 3DS anyday!

      • komiko12

DQ games. FF games after 10 are still enjoyable as long as you don’t mind the different combat systems

      • Nicholas Gatewood

I love FF12 but didn’t care for FF10 and thought FF13 was an abomination. I’d take Dragon Quest over Final Fantasy after the horrendous FF13 any day, but all the FF games up to nine are superior to Dragon Quest alternatives. Complicated matter, but at the end of the day Square Enix is dead to me anyways.

  • dark zios

Hell yeah!!! played all the ds remakes can’t wait for this one.

  • dark zios

Hell yeah!!! played all the ds remakes can’t wait for this one.

  • Isn’t this the one that’s like obscenely long?

    • mark zeus lee

       yes like 100hrs long

      • neo_firenze

I’m still not done with it, and I pick it up and put a few more hours in every year.  I’ve been doing that for about 12 years.

Maybe this winter is time to wrap it up, so I can be ready for the remake to take me through 2020!

        • mark zeus lee

yeah and after you killed the demonlord you get post storyline story (a DQ standard) which I may say your total playtime would be over 200hrs

        • That’s kind of how I already play most RPGs (well, maybe not at QUITE such a slow pace) so I’m not sure if I would like this or have no patience of it whatsoever.

  • Tommy Lee

I can’t find the victory chime so using I’m this instead: http://youtu.be/_eQO33JQRU0

  • Raze

My 2nd fav DQ after 8….
    Bring it on!!!

  • Tylor Makimoto

Okay SE, you have the VII right. Now just put Final Fantasy in front of that and all will be forgiven. OC, I’m sure this will sell extremely well, but give us the FFVII 3D remake naoh >:

    • Hraesvelgr

Final Fantasy VII was already 3D.

      • Tylor Makimoto

A majority of the games that have 3D in the title use 3D, not 3DS.

  • Wow. I never got the chance to play what I hear was the best DQ after VIII. I wanted to try it, but it didn’t look so good. Now they 3D it up, and release it on 3DS!? Freak YES!

  • revenent hell

Oh i was waiting for this! I was going to buy the orriginal but I couldnt validate paying over 200$ for a used game that may or may not come with scratches……So I figured one day they would have to make a port of it to something……..and am I ever glad I was correct

    • Nicholas Gatewood

They had a copy of the game for only $20 in great condition at my local Game eXchange but by the time I saved up the money for it someone had purchased the game. Very depressing.

      • revenent hell

well I dont normally ever buy used games no matter what game it is. I have had a bad track record with that crap. Every used game I have bought ended up not playing correctly and ended up with me just finding a new copy…..But I did consider it for this game the only problem was none of my areas,or surrounding area, stores carried even  a used copy and unless I can see it…Theres just to much risk in buying a used copy without being able to look at it in person. Theres nothing so anoying as getting to a good part of a game and watching it “skip” threw it if it gets threw it at all.

  • KingGunblader

The only way Square Enix could top this is if it was FFVI.

  • disgaea36

Yesss I really hope this comes out state side the 3ds has been kicking ass recently.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Never got a chance to play this one, I can’t wait to play this <3

  • Barrylocke89

This is the only dragon quest game in the main series that I’ve yet to try out (not counting DQ X), so I’m quite excited.

  • …and that, my grandchildren, was the story of how Dragon Quest VII 3DS became one of my most expected games of the moment, alongside Shin Megami Tensei IV

  • $30632660

  • Jonattas F.

    The waiting game has begun!!

  • daylightdies

Yesssss! I usually don’t like remakes, but since I never got a crack at the original, count me as psyched. This is the game that would make me buy a 3DS as well!

  • MagiusNecros

    3DS confirmed for RPG King?

    • jeam95

oh yess it will be crowned RPG king!

  •  i wonder it will retain the difficulty, i still remember playing this and couldnt even finish the first dungeon XP

  • Eilanzer

This game was amazing!!! Even now i remember the puzzles *o*

  • platomaker

about time I heard something about this. This rumor dates almost as far back as the system itself. To see something official is very nice. Now for FF5 and 6 onto one cartridge.

  • Settsuo

As much as I love VII, it only means to me that maybe I’ll get that DQVIII remake soon.

  • Yvonne Tsang

Ughh, those 3D models look like ass…

  • LunarKnite

Well, with the tropical storm Sandy taking out my power, I just found out about this. This news makes up for this entire week.
