Castlevania: Mirror of Fate Lets You Play As Gabriel Belmont In A Prologue

By Ishaan . October 31, 2012 . 12:00pm

Konami have shared a new trailer and screenshots for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate in celebration of Halloween. You can check the trailer out below:

Mirror of Fate tells the story of Simon and Trevor Belmont, both descendents of Gabriel Belmont. Gabriel has returned as Dracula, threatening to destroy the brotherhood, and Konami say that you’ll get to control him in a prologue level before his transformation.

Time-wise, Mirror of Fate takes place 25 years after Lords of Shadow. In addition to Simon and Trevor (and Gabriel in the prologue), you’ll also get to control Alucard. Konami also released the names of some of the game’s voice-actors and the composer who’s handling music:

Simon Belmont (Alec Newman)

Trevor Belmont (Richard Madden)

Gabriel Belmont (Robert Carlyle)

Orchestral score provided by Oscar Araujo

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate will be released for the Nintendo 3DS in early 2013.

Oh darn, I should have seen this coming.  Of COURSE Gabriel is the fourth playable character.  He’s playable in the other two games in the Lords of Shadow trilogy, and really these games are telling his story.  This makes perfect sense and I’m totally okay with it.

  • It’s nice to see a new trailer apart from the first one shown.  This game looks pretty promising.

I’m sorry, but those Scottish accents are extremely jarring. Do the developers not know what country Transylvania is a part of?

    • Godmars

       Why of course!

      This one:

Except, with none of the Belmonts having been raised in Transylvania, why would their accents be derived from there?

There’s no reason why Gabriel couldn’t have a Scottish accent. The LoS universe doesn’t tell us where the Brotherhood is located exactly but between Gabriel’s accent being Scottish, his choosing of a surname derived from French, and Zobek’s being British, it can be presumed that they’re in Western Europe. On top of that, they’re clearly based on Western Christian military orders like the Knights Templar (who were active around LoS’ time) and the Order of the Dragon (of whom the historical Dracula’s father was a member), so it’s likely that they’re supposed to be Western European. That said, seeing as his son was also raised by the Brotherhood, his accent makes sense. Simon was also raised somewhere around the area by people of the mountains, so his accent could’ve gone either way depending on how far out they were from. It is possible for one to lose their accent, after all.

Accents and such a side, the information regarding the castle itself suggests it’s also located in Western Europe. Dracula took over the Bernhard Castle. Bernhard is a German name. The castle was also inhabited by Friedrich von Frankenstein prior to Carmilla taking it over. Friedrich and Frankenstein are both German names as well. Even the original Castlevania timeline’s Dracula isn’t stated to be Romanian. The Cronqvist name is of Swedish origin and he was a Crusader near the time of the First Crusade, so it’s unlikely that he was Romanian either.

Basically… I’m not really seeing any reason that anyone in this trailer couldn’t have a Scottish accent and no reason any of them should have had a Romanian accent.

      • Spirit Macardi

Well, I only know the events from the normal series, not this one. In there the Belmonts were clearly of French origin and the games took place in Romania. Nice and streamlined.

This just strikes me as being akin to movies that default to English accents when depicting any ancient culture.

        • Solomon_Kano

As a fan of both I don’t see one being more complex than the other, really. If we’re simplifying them, then the LoS Belmonts are Western European and they’re fighting vampires in Western Europe. If you get down into the details of either series there’s more layers, of course.

I’m not really getting how it reminds you of movies that default to English though. The characters have accents accurate to their backgrounds. They went to a good length to make sure characters’ accents reflected the fact that they came from a range of locales, in fact.

If you didn’t know the reason this game’s Belmonts have Scottish accents, cool, and I’m happy to inform you. At this point though, we’re not going anywhere but into “old series” vs. “new series”. That’s unnecessary.

Good to see Konami remembers this one, I was wondering what the silence was. Hopefully with the release window nearing we’ll start to hear more about the finalised game.

Early 2013 is going to be the death of my wallet, I swear.

  • kupomogli

Anyone else notice the slight nod to Symphony of the Night at the end?

  • Solomon_Kano

They decided not to tell us Alucard’s voice actor? Or, rather, they didn’t want to list a certain VA twice…

Anywho, hopefully I’ll have a 3DS by the time this is out. I really want this.

    • z_merquise

In Lords of Shadows’ timeline, Trevor is Gabriel’s son. Since Gabriel became Dracula, I think it made sense who Alucard should be.

They just try to avoid it but what I mentioned is already the biggest possibility.

      • Solomon_Kano

Yea, they’re trying to avoid telling us outright but… well, there’s just so many clues lol.

  • isfuturebright

I think this will be epic! I hope it is! But I hoped they made the game using more 2D and less 3D…

  • thundergodCN

A handheld castlevania game with 20 hrs of gameplay?

Whaat glorious nonsense is this mockery

  • Quinton Cunningham

Looks fantastic. PErfect mix of old and new.

  • eilegz

    those jaggies =/

the music and the gameplay felt like a 2d god of war, the exploration its good to see it come back but really i didnt enjoy lord of the shadow and i dont think i will enjoy this…

    • Elvick

Just think how those Jaggies will transform into Super Jaggies when you turn on 3D! :D

  • 4 playable characters, all technically Belmonts?

Kinda weak. Hopefully, Simon and Trevor are way different… then again the focus on melee combat kinda conflicts with the idea of of mage like Sylvia/Maria/Yoko.

    • Adrián Alucard

Trevor uses Light and Dark magic and a few subweapons
Simon can summon “guardians” and most of the classic subweapons

  • Elvick

Still not sure what to think about this. I want a new Metroidvania on PS Vita. ): I’d sacrifice Book of Shadows to the gaming gods for that one. Sorry Silent Hill fans that actually like that game.
