The Cyclops In Soul Sacrifice Became A Monster After Sacrificing His Eye

By Sato . November 2, 2012 . 3:42pm

Be careful what you wish for because in Soul Sacrifice sometimes your dream comes true at a horrific cost. Take the story of the Cyclops, one of the monsters players will fight in the PlayStation Vita game, as a cautionary tale.

The Cyclops was once an aspiring blacksmith who always gave it his all. Although he was very skilled, he was always second best to his rival. He was too proud of his own skills to ever admit that his rival was in fact better than himself. Over time, his jealousy grew into a volatile hatred, as he was consumed by darkness for his sin. One day, he wished to become the greatest blacksmith known to the world, and his wish was granted… by darkness itself.

By sacrificing his own eye, he forged the greatest spear known to man. However, this was not the end to his sad tale. As we all know, evil never plays fair, and didn’t make any exceptions. Instead of settling for just an eye, the darkness also consumed his entire being and transformed him into a Cyclops monster to teach the poor blacksmith a lesson about greed and envy.

After defeating a monster in Soul Sacrifice you have a choice – you can either sacrifice the Cyclops’ pour soul or spare it. Check out our hands on with Soul Sacrifice for more about the monster sacrificing system

  • Wow…

  • Domii

Sad, but I hope we can claim his spear once we defeat him.

    • Gigawings

You: Eye got your spear now!

Defeated Cyclops: Oh come on. First you beat the crap out of me and now spout horrible pun? Can at least I get my peace now?

      • Domii

      • Syn

Ohh the eye-rony of it all!!!!!!

    • Peeka Chu

Probably a “spear” like spell if you eat his soul. I’m enjoying RO immensely, so I can’t wait for this. Don’t know why, but MH has never done it for me. I love these hunting games that have a bit (or lots, in SS case) of story to them.

      • Domii

From what I’ve seen of this game, it looks more like Dark/Demons souls to me than MH. Which is a very very good thing.

  • Dexward

So what happens when I pour soul on the Cyclops?

    • Gigawings

His hair turned from ginger to black/brunette/blonde :p

  • SirRichard

On the one hand, his wish wasn’t particularly despicable and even understandable, he simply couldn’t know that he would cursed that way for it. On the other, his pride, envy and hatred were enough for him to turn to the dark arts and maim himself just to best a rival.

I hope they try to make all the stories greyer like this one, though maybe give it something weightier than “he wanted to be the very best”.

    • Gigawings

Then your group encounter a beast master who wanted to be “the very best” like no one ever was. Because to catch the monster is his real test, to train those monster is his cause.

      Gotta capture em all! Monsters!

    • Elvick

Who doesn’t want to be like no one ever was?

  • Thuggin Love

Reminds me of these old horror flicks called Wishmaster.

    • Domii

Oh I love those Wishmaster movies!!!

  • Göran Isacson

Going from the article on the idol-game to this is… funny, in a very dark and despair-filled sort of way. The kind of dark where you have to laugh, or else be overwhelmed by the futility of life and shop for cement shoes in the nearest river.

    • Gigawings

Cement shoes! get your cement shoes here! weekend’s half off!

  • Crevox

    Darkness teaches him a lesson

    How nice of you darkness

    • Gigawings

Well, that’s an eye opening revelation.

  • Oh, that pour poor soul~ ;3

  • Hinataharem

There are some dark souls in this game

  • Gigawings

Man, we will feel horrible when we sacrifice his soul. Of course it also show that when we take the evil path we can’t have mercy toward the weak. Most games who utilize good/evil choice nowadays usually ended up with “nice” or “sympathetic” evil rather than a complete monster.

    • Scrooge_McDuck

Of course, there’s also the “cartoon villain” evil and “jerk for no reason at all”. I do hope we could get a well-thought evil path for once.

  • Hidayat246

The cyclops story remind me about Bitores Mendez

  • DanteJones

A worse twist of fate would be:

    Blacksmith creates “Gae Bolg”!
Blacksmith trips over a rock due to lack of depth perception.
Blacksmith’s heart is pierced by “Gae Bolg”!

I’m liking that the enemies have stories behind them though I know there’s going to be that one guy who I’ll feel bad for, and even worse when I have to kill him/her. :<

    • heartless141

this is one of the best point about MGS4 as well. Loved those beasts’ stories

  • heartless141

that poooooorr but DELICIOUS soul. I gonna enjoy devouring yah, muwahahahHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAH

  • heartless141

and I just noticed something, is this gonna be the 7 sins again?
    so far we have

    Harpy = Glutton
    Cerberus = Pride(?)
    Cyclops = Envy

in the trailer we got a really handsome Leviathan as well, my bet is his story got something to do with Greed.

    • Raze

      So…Next is Succubus = Lust?

      • heartless141

one would assume so since succubus are … succubus.
but i’d love it to be a Fox, a tiger or something that run on 4 legs.

    • sherimae1324

i think the golden griffon is the greed oni-chan ^_^

  • Aisioux

This game is serious business. This is one of the few times I get to say that owning a Vita for a game such as this, even if I have to wait next year and some change. Is damn sure worth every minute I have to wait.

This game is a day 1 purchase with me already paying in full lol.

  • tubers

I just hope they fix the frame rate and screen tearing.. I’ve been noticing them on trailers.. I’d rather them tone the visuals a notch down than have to deal with that..

EDIT: I take it back.. I must have been anal retentive at that time.. re watched the gameplay trailers and it wasn’t really noticeable.

  • XiaomuArisu

Seems like I have  to save everyone.
    Paragon for Live!

  • isotrex

Damn! They keep on teasing. I kept on drooling. When’s this game going to come out?! I can’t freakin’ wait. This is the only reason I’m gonna get my first Vita. haha.

  • I am sparing every single monster… if they have a sad tale.

If they were total jerks as humans then screw their souls….No I’ll probably save them too. : (

    • tubers

I got a little emo on one of the demos where he didn’t save the cat and just absorbed the thing xD

      • What cat? Like a normal cat or a monster cat?

        • tubers

It was a monster at first.. got beaten down.. turned into a real kitty.. then you’d have two choices.. u know after that.

          • That is horrible!

          • tubers

If you try and save it, it’s awesome! You’ll see the kitty run away.. if you sacrifice him/her/it, there’s just some kind effects (sfx) but nothing gory at least.

I wonder if the game features a game developer that sacrificed his senior position in order to make a monster hunter clone that looks nothing like its concept art?

  • isotrex

I’m gonna be a soul eater. Devouring souls will be a pleasure. *evil laugh*
