First Look At MapleStory For Nintendo 3DS

By Spencer . November 6, 2012 . 1:46am

Nintendo and Nexon are working together to make a new MapleStory game for the Nintendo 3DS. While the two companies haven’t said much about the title, we a few screenshots from MapleStory 3DS care of Nintendo of Korea. MapleStory 3DS is slated for release in 2013 and so far it’s the only 3DS game exclusive to South Korea.

    • Ryan Sinclair

I haven’t picked up Code of Princess yet.

hey, as long as we can avoid Mapletards ( I feel dirty using the term, but it’s really the best to describe the bad side of the user-base ) I may try it out.

    • Yuriangels

what did you mean mapletards? I used to play maplestory, so are the play dumb now. (O_0)

      • Never

Just because it’s typical doesn’t mean it includes you.
In your case, it’s too bad.

        • Yuriangels

oooo i didn’t mean me sorry, i mean are players like that now. sorry

    • M’iau M’iaut

Next time say ‘bad side of the user base’ and leave it at that. Leave the name calling elsewhere.

Never played MapleStory, but wasn’t it some Online RPG that is available in the whole world (America, Japan, Europe).
If so, why only Korea-exclusive? Same goes to the DS version but due to piracy crap I could understand why they didn’t do it.
But… could you create your own character in those Maplestory portable games then?

    • Draparde

The DS version actually came out in japan a year after the Korean one to my understanding… maybe it didin’t do that well in korea/japan so they didint bring it over?

i hope they do, i actually enjoy the way the sprites in this game are looking. though i’d like to see them in action.

If anyone has played La Tale and MapleStory, could you say why MS is more popular? I compare them cause they’re very similar games but in my opinion, La Tale looks better, plays better and has better music. MS has none of those IMO, so why is it sooo huge?

    • http://takopako.tumblr.com takopako

la tale is boring. thats why. it has a certain appeal, but i can only play for an hour at a time, whereas with maple, i can play for days and days at a time. lol. they are also fairly different in terms of gameplay. ANNNND, your music sentiment is debatable.

but another, less argumentative way to answer your question would be that latale doesnt do nearly as much advertising as maplestory does. case and point, i had to actually search and find out about the game, as opposed to seeing ads or hearing about it or anything like that.

      • CirnoLakes

I’m going with the advertising argument.

Also, MapleStory has been around longer.

      • FitzpatrickPhillips

Yeah that makes sense. You see MS everywhere and totally forgot how I found out about La Tale.
Also c’mon dawg, we all know LaTale has the best tracks :D

Gameplay wise though, I know they play differently but they’re still trying to do the whole side-scroller action theme. I feel LaTale’s combat and platforming is way more fluid.

    • Draparde

Last time i played latale, it had some translation problems here and there. (sometimes sentences made no since, other times they’d just sound weird.)

i’ll also have to agree with the advertising part.

gameplay wise, personally. i like Latale better.

    • Grenalie

They’re both shitty F2P games it’s just one came earlier and had more advertising.

  • Ryan Sinclair

I’m definitely excited about this! However, it’s really shameful that the DS version of Maple Story was Korea exclusive. It’d really be disgusting if Maple Story 3DS didn’t come to the West (Europe, North America, Canada). Hopefully it will see the light of day outside of the Korean region. Perhaps we can all do an Operation Rainfall type petition for Maple Story 3DS and Square Enix Bravely Default?

  • Christopher Nunes

I hope they do one for LaTale! I love LaTale! Compare to MapleStory, MS is interesting and has been around longer but I prefer LaTale more as it’s more colorful, has excellent, good music, and I like the story (despite the various translation errors from it, I’m trying to document the entire story of LaTale so I don’t forget and make sense of it).

Though I have to say I’m interest even if MapleStory was around longer I don’t think I’ll be getting this game.

  • VeroC11

The DS version was a real letdown, I hope they put more work on this one

  • Rachel Hetchler

    SHUT UP AND TAKE MY-
    “…exclusive to South Korea.”
Never mind. Damn those region locks.

  • elppakcuf

well it’s pixelart+platformer, two things that can sell any game to me, them combined is even better, but maple story itself is such a grindfest with worst community, it was literally painfull to play

  • Daplayer2k7

I would buy it IF… it was a proper MMORPG and it’s integrated with PC version of Maplestory. Probably what every MS player wants out of this…
If Sony can do PS3 & PC integration/Cross play with DCUO why can’t Nintendo do it with 3DS…. minus the fact it’s a Handheld.

    • 324234

You said it right there. It’s a handheld. The 3DS isn’t capable of running the MMO, not to mention the awful controls you’d have to deal with. If you really want MapleStory on the go that badly, get a laptop.

(And if they really wanted to port MapleStory to a handheld, it would be better off on the Vita)
