Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge DLC Adds Momiji As A Playable Character

By Ishaan . November 16, 2012 . 10:10am

Momiji will be a playable character in Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge’s Challenge Mode and Ninja Trials mode, Nintendo have announced. The female ninja, who made her debut in Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword for the Nintendo DS, will be added to the game as free DLC in early December. Take a look at her in action below:

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge will be released on November 18th in North America and on January 11th in Europe. Nintendo say that more free characters are planned for the game after Momiji as well. You can read our playtest of the game here.

Damn, this girl has DOA status. And she’s free.

I already feel like the game will be worth it as I’ve actually been buying the costumes that have been coming out in DOA5 for the last few weeks >_>

0:45 – “Master Ryu! I’m coming for you!” – Momiji

      hmm….

      • MrTyrant

Master Ryu you are a one lucky bastard but your deserve it because you kick ass.

I assume we can expect Rachel as well, and goddamn hopefully some of the characters people actually want so everyone shuts up.

  • ronin4life

Still really torn on wether or not to get this…
How does it compare to NG2? Is it better or worse?

Edit: just read the Games radar review. Not happy to hear about frame rate problems, and if not for that I wouldn’t still be wondering if I should get it… although “when and for how much” would still be quite strong in my mind…

It’s a great game. I never really got the hate.

  • XypherCode

    That’s cool! xD
    …and it’s free! :))
I was hoping they’d give her a major part in the story as well but no one’s complaining.

  • DarthSithZero

NOOO I  always wanted to use Momiji in NG3, guess I going to wait for Razon Edge for X360 or NG3SP

    • sd28

good luck with that I don’t see it coming.

    • PreyMantis

With Nintendo publishing this game, it’s as likely as Mario being on the other platforms. It’s not happening.

  • Budgiecat

I wonder if I go to Gamestop and try to buy Ninja Gaiden 3 for PS3 will the cashiers and people around me in the store simultaneously all break in a horde of laughter while pointing?

    • Godmars

Considering what’s been said about NG3 before this version, can you truly not say you’d have it coming?

  • raymk

OK she seems to have improved combat wise and her costumes are very good still. I like her new costume very much and it seems like its a spin off of kasumi DOA5 costume.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    She owns

  • Godmars

Don’t understand how the devs made the first version of the game they did. especially in light of these changes.

  • MrTyrant

Oh gawd Momiji is so sexy, she deserves being in DOA at least. I’ll use her everytime with a lot of different costumes.

Free DLC is just buttering people up… look at what they did with NG3 and DOA5 :/

  • Matthew Dickinson

These new features are nice and all, but the original on PS3/360 was fun and definitely worth getting if you like ninja hack n slash action.

  • MrJechgo

First she’s a new character in Warriors Orochi 3 and now here… am I seeing a patern here ?

  • Brimfyre

Best character from the Ninja Gaiden games.

Ever since sigma 2, I’ve lamented the inclusion of extra characters which clearly were just another way for hayashi to leave his mark on the series in some arbritrary way.
The reason why I disliked it, is because they are exactly one of the reasons NG3 was received so poorly: They only have 1 weapon.

This basically means their “moveset” could’ve been just another “weapon” for Ryu and thus the inclusion of these characters is pointless, in fact it seems they recycled some of the NG2 staff animations for momiji’s weapon.

Sure you can say it adds some contrived sense of variation, because you are given a different character model to play around with, but then you are still stuck with that 1 weapon throughout the game; momiji was shown wielding a sword in NG: DS, yet ever since hayashi “reimagined” her she’s been stuck with that halberd and the dumb fanservice “miko” outfit.

For some real added value they could’ve at least let her wield swords as well.

Remember that the original NGII had achievements that encouraged players to play through the entire game with a single weapon?

The extra characters all have a different feel to them than Hayabusa. Momiji had her double jump and aerial ultimate techniques for example.

Dragon Sword is where the extra characters actually played and felt like Ryu.

      • http://twitter.com/monkeyking2135 monkey king

I do, and those are considered challenges, they are choice not norm; the appeal of NG is great action with an arsenal of weapons, if it wasn’t they could’ve just given Ryu the dragon sword for the entire game and call it a day…oh wait they did and we all know how well NG3 was received.
Just having a double jump or an aerial UT doesn’t really change the core gameplay, which is just slaughtering enemies with weapons.

Which is why I mentioned it being a -contrived- sense of variation: she has these things (you don’t really need either) because I’m sure hayashi himself realises without them she’s nothing more than an extra weapon, cept you are stuck with it, no choice.

And even then they could’ve given ryu a jumping UT as well if you feel that is what makes momiji so unique..

And it doesn’t really mattered how momiji played in DS, since that’s not what I was refering to; momiji was -show- wielding a sword and thus they could’ve given her some kind of unique sword combat on top of the recycled halberd nonsense.

Heck if it was up to me:

She’d still be wearing the white outfit with hayabusa forehead protector (represent your village girl..), the white one from NGS2 is fine too.
Give her a sword with a different style to ryu’s
Give her the halberd with no recycled stuff
And give her some sort of fast, hard hitting hand to hand combat style, perhaps a variation on the tonfa’s in NG2.

In her current form, I’d much rather her be selectable model/costume for Ryu and add the halberd as a weapon for him.

        • Repede91

I still feel that Momiji and the other playable characters all have seperate quirks from Ryu and eachother in their movement (Momiji and Rachel have more heft and a deliberate play style than Ryu, whilst Ayane is farther than him in the direction of nimbleness and very responsive controls).

NGIII wasn’t the first in the series to limit Ryu to only his Dragon Sword, DS does the same and people generally like that game. NG3′s problems was that the combat was shallow. While other weapons would help spice things up a bit just for the sake of variety, ultimately you’d come to the same conclusion that the enemy encounters lack any kind of tension.

  • Göran Isacson

Interesting. She seems to have a variety of outfits at her disposal, some whom look like the outfit Ayane wore briefly in a DOA5 cutscene… but more characters? I suppose Rachel would be one, but any more?

… I know that they’ve probably retconned him out, but I have to say I wouldn’t mind seeing  Robert T.S in it? Or at least Ryu’s father, who’s apparently in this game as well. Just, someone else with a pair of XY’s.

  • Repede91

Pure and innocent shrine maidens, WHAT?!

  • Visa Vang

Now get me a Kasumi DLC too and I’m sold.
