The Mystery Of Shin Megami Tensei IV’s Demon Summoning Gauntlets

By Laura . November 22, 2012 . 1:00pm

Atlus have updated the official website for Shin Megami Tensei IV with some of story details that we’ve already touched upon in the past, and a few screenshots as well. As previously reported, Shin Megami Tensei IV’s story starts out in Mikado of the East, which is located in the luscious, green continent of Kanto.

The citadel is ruled by the king, Ahaziah Mikado, who resides in the Mikado Castle, around which the fortress city is built. Below the castle lies the rest of the city, separated into different districts by tall castle walls. Mikado of the East has a “Gauntlet Ritual”—those that have turned 18 are gathered from all around and undergo a ritual to activate the gauntlet worn by the Samurai.

Just why these gauntlets exist in Mikado is somewhat of a mystery, as their technology is clearly out of place in the country’s culture. The gauntlets, as detailed before, contain a demon-summoning program. However, something to note is that, while East Mikado is a part of Shin Megami Tensei IV’s story, Tokyo, too, plays a role in the game.

The main character in Shin Megami Tensei IV has a dream that indicates his choices will shape the world. Once he wakes up, he completes the Gauntlet Ritual where the Samurai are chosen, along with his childhood friend, Issachar. There, he meets the game’s other characters, who he also saw in his dream.

According to the game’s website, as a Samurai, life is much different for our main character from his life in his hometown; and every day, day by day, his life becomes more and more extraordinary.

Ah, the wait is going to be painfully long for this game. The more I hear about it, the more I want the damn thing.

    • Hello.

      • bonafide

        • Why don’t you come live in the modern world like the rest of us and use Gchat? :)

  • $39420547

    i hope for a european release… i can’t wait for this game

  • I guess a Shin Megami Tensei game isn’t a SMT game without taking (partially) place in Japan.

    • Barrylocke89

Or at least not a numbered SMT game, so says the creators.

      • Ferofax

Yep, exactly why Strange Journey, the spiritual SMTIV, never got the designated number.

  • Tales_of_Master

Everything in this game is starting to remind me of the first SMT game. The game looks gorgeous. It’s like an updated SMT and SMTII. Glad to see the series going back to it’s true roots. Although I loved Nocturne, it was still a big departure from the first two games. The wait for this game will be excruciating, but after announcing Etrian Odyssey IV for the U.S, Soul Hackers should follow, and finally we will get to SMTIV…’s gonna be glorious X3

    • Barrylocke89

Strange Journey was pretty back to the roots too, IMO, at least in terms of gameplay. The story strayed a bit from the traditional style, though even it had the Order vs. Chaos situation that we know and love.

If anyone is crazy enough, most big retailers are having 3DS on sale for like $150.

Don’t die trying to get it though.

  • Brandon001

    the main reason i want a 3DS

  • I hope you can recruit new Dante into your party

    *runs away*

    • Ishaan!! I expected this from a few of the regulars, but not you! I am disappointed.

      • It’s my opinion, okay?

        • Ren

Now now, you two, kiss and make up

          • M’iau M’iaut

I must inform you that since the poster stated this was his ‘opinion’, I am allowing the trolling of our mod.

          • Appearing out of nowhere just to see some passionate kissing. Oh you~

        • Oh, fine… ﹁ ﹁ If that fight in DmC thread got carried over here, don’t look at me.

          • I dunno what you mean man, New Dante would so fit this game and make it all the better!

          • M’iau M’iaut

But but but this game isn’t running at 60fps, that statue dude looks like he uses roids not meth AND THIS GAME IS NOT BAYONETTA 2!

        • Luna Kazemaru

          No its not ok

        • Exkaiser

          …I’m okay with this!

    • MrTyrant

      You mean Donte?

    • PoweredByHentai

      Like in SMT Nocturne?

I thought he was pretty awesome in Nocturne.

Was he ever in Digital Devil Saga?

      • No, he wasn’t in DDS to my recollection. (I was only trolling, though)

        • PoweredByHentai

That’s unfortunate.  I quite enjoy these crossover projects though.

      • Exkaiser

        No, but Demifiend was~~.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

      Ohh you.^o^

  • So excited for this game. After my time working on Nocturne (need to return to that), Strange Journey (that as well) and a large portion of the MegaTen games I could get a hold on, I’m very psyched for this game. Cannot wait to see how it plays out.

These story tidbits are wonderful and I hope that they continue to trickle out (only for early parts of the game… I do not want to know the whole story before playing through it).

  • riceisnice

I wonder what kind of horrific destruction of Tokyo we’ll inadvertently cause this time.

  • benhofb

Huh. Interesting. So it is going to be in Tokyo. I suppose we can go ahead and assume some sort of time travel is taking place here since the COMPs look pretty high tech. Also, some of the earlier screens depict the streets of Shibuya. Merp. I really hope this gets localized.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well main numbered SMT will always happen in Tokyo/Japan as that is what the main producer mentioned before.

Anything outside of that region will be spin-off just like Strange Journey.^_^

    • Derek E Nay

Oh it’s going to be localized. Even if I have to go to Atlus USA and kidnap the employee’s son, daugther, wife, husband, mother, father, uncle, and their pet fish.

  • Prinnydoom

Looking forward to this a lot. Anyway they might localise it or is that a pipe dream at the moment?

    • Grenalie

It’s very likely for localization, I would be surprised if it wasn’t.

    • Zeik56

The only way we’re not getting this is by some completely unforeseen circumstance. Like Atlus USA getting jettisoned into space.

      • Prinnydoom

I know your joking but that would be pretty funny to watch ^____^

    • Lunar_Outcast

Of course they’ll localize this. Unless you live in Europe.

      • Prinnydoom

        Then i am F****d aren’t I -____-

  • LightZero

I like that the dreams are a throw back to SMT1 where Katzuya would see his comrades.

    • Crok425

Kazuya is an awesome protagonist. I also like that this game has little references to SMTI as well.

  • Junko Enoshima

Maybe we could get Pikachu or Mew as a demon, because this game is on the 3DS. Just a thought :)

    • Derek E Nay

Give me Mewtwo and I will be set :P

      • Junko Enoshima

Mewtwo is also awesome, so why not? :P

    • Barrylocke89

That would be an interesting cameo to be sure. Not one that I anticipate Atlus and Nintendo pulling though. Heck, since a lot of people credit Digital Devil Story as being one of the first monster collecting games ever, maybe the next pokemon game should cameo Jack Frost as a pokemon instead (evolving into King/Black Frost, of course!)

    • ragingmerifes

      I’d sue Atlus for sucking.

      • Junko Enoshima

        Why would they suck?

        • ragingmerifes

          Pokémon sucks.

  • Stranger On The Road

Question, at the Shin Megami Tensei dependent on each other? I haven’t played any of the previous ones.

Can I simply start from this game even though I haven’t played the previous ones?

    • Alrai

They’re not dependent on each other. They do take place in the same universe but have stories independent of each other. At best, unless this installment is completely different from the previous games, you’d maybe miss how Character X vaguely references Character B back in the first game or how maybe there’s a cool reference in Area 1 that actually is a shout out to Nocturne somehow.

      • LightZero

SMT1 (Neutral) and SMT2 takes place in the same universe. Nocturne (SMT3) takes place in a different universe but all the universes are connected through the Amala Network. However, a new player doesn’t need to play any of them to understand the other. Although it does help with references.

        • Alrai

Yeah, I used universe in the sense that they’re all connected as a franchise opposed to universe in that they’re located in the same specific place. It was kind of a problematic word given the general theme, as you basically pointed out, but…if you can think of a better shorthand for ‘loosely connected games in the same setting but not exactly, per se’ I’d love to hear it. Which, given internet and the lack of tone and the like, might sound sarcastic but it’s sincere.

    • Crok425

Yes, you can play them in the order you want. But in the next game there may be a reference to of what happened to the previous protagonist like SMTII tells what happened with the SMT protagonist and Nocturne (SMTIII) telling what happened to Aleph (SMTII protagonist).
Of course, I dunno if SMTIV will tell what happened with the Demi-fiend (Nocturne protagonist).
Either way, you can play the SMT games in whatever order you want. If you ever plan on playing another main SMT, I recommend Nocturne :).

  • I bought a 3DS primarily for this…Can’t wait!

  • ragingmerifes

Maybe the gauntlet is a technology that demon hunters got from demoms themselves. Maybe there’s not a simple hunter–prey relationship between then, but more something like a war between equals. Maybe this SMT will have actual plot twists and advancement.

  • The more I know about this, the more I’m sure this is one helluva game. Strange Journey just isn’t doing it for me anymore, I NEED MY NEW SMT GAME FIX ;_;

  • So does this means Issachar get chosen as well? Now we will see whether is he the type tht provide lunchboxes and tsuntsun comedy XD

I presume COMP is some sort of OOParts-like thingie in East Mikado?
