<< Last week’s software sales chart

Last week’s big release in Japan was—wait for it—Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. Square Enix took on publishing duties for Activision once again, and the subtitled version of the game (dubbed versions are released later) sold 197,350 copies on the PlayStation. Meanwhile, it sold an additional 22,177 copies on the Xbox 360.

That’s a high debut for Call of Duty. For comparison, last year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sold 180,372 copies on the PlayStation 3 in its first week. On the Xbox 360, it sold 30,467 copies. Tallying up total sales, Black Ops 2 wins out by around 10,000 copies, and was also the highest-selling new release of the week.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2’s success may have come at the cost of Capcom’s E.X. Troopers, which was released last week as well. E.X. Troopers sold a mere 17,402 copies on the Nintendo 3DS and an even lesser 8,717 copies on the PlayStation 3. Perhaps sending it out alongside the most popular shooter in the world wasn’t such a hot idea.

In other news, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Magnagate and the Infinite Labyrinth saw its release last week, too, and so did the PlayStation 3 port of Hot Shots: World Invitational. The latter outsold its PlayStation Vita counterpart.

Finally, one last point of interest—Bravely Default: Flying Fairy looks like it’s about to slip out of the top-20, and we may or may not see it come back up during the upcoming holidays. That having been said, at the rate it’s selling, it should easily cross 300,000 copies sold at retail in January, if not sooner. That’s an admirable achievement for a brand new role-playing franchise.

The top-20 chart for the week was as follows:

    *Melts at E.X Troopers sales*
    Well, I am dead.

  • SirRichard

Even given the stiff competition, that’s rather surprisingly low sales for the PS3 version of EX Troopers, it can’t be solely down to Call of Duty’s release, but I guess we’ll see in the weeks to come if it builds itself up. If not, people probably were more set on the 3DS version.

I wonder what Capcom were expecting of it?

they would get better sales than EX Troopers if they release new Monster Hunter for PS3/Vita.
look at MH3U sales too.. looks like the player getting bored with ver. 3 :P

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Considering how well Mon Hun has done in a new consoles, i would disagree with you there.
And seeing how Vita is also having problem on selling, i can’t even imagine them selling better than 3DS and Wii U.

  • I’m really surprised at Ex Troopers low as hell sales as I thought it would fit the Japanese audience more(anime stylish, over the top shooter thing). But as someone mentioned the problem was apparently in its release date, same week as Black Ops2(which sold surprisingly well I have to say), who most shooter fans apparently tend towards.

That said, daaaamn Animal Crossing is still going strong, good to see something else beside Pokemon and Monster Hunter and Super Mario breaking the million mark xD

    • malek86

I’m not sure that the japanese audience who likes anime and over the top stuff, is the same aduience who likes shooting games. For example, Vanquish also didn’t sell particularly well (still better than this though, but at least that had realistic graphics).

I have a feeling Capcom went for a mix of two audiences, the anime crowd and the shooters crowd, but effectively managed to grab neither due to them being more different than they thought, and thus each was put off by the other element.

Granted the release date won’t have helped, but it alone can’t justify these numbers.

      • Yeah they kinda developed a new niche, and that one is extremely small, guess it was a too risky move :/

      • British_Otaku

        Valkyria Chronicles – 77,267 PS3 only
        Valkyria Chronicles 2 – 94,444 PSP only
        Valkyria Chronicles 3 – 102,779 PSP only

It is a completely different genre overall, but it still goes with an anime aesthetic, over the shoulder camera and shooting. It managed to do well without having the somewhat tie-in spinoff appeal of being related to Lost Planet (not sure how popular that is in Japan).

I’m not accounting for any of the games sold/debut on the same week or the fact that the PSP is a beast in Japan, but it seems that there is a niche for the mix of anime and shooting. Just that Capcom missed them with this game.

        • malek86

The genre is way too different to make a comparison. Even if it has shooting, VC is still a strategy game with a turn-based approach. EX Troopers seems to be based on fast-paced combat and also multiplayer.

It was called “Monster Hunter with guns” on many occasions. Maybe MH fans don’t really care for guns or anime aesthetics?

          • NEKO WORKING

well it lacks the sense of collection and achievement :(

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Ex Troopers didn’t even break 10k? Ah Mah Gaah

  • Don’t think anyone saw coming (concerning E.X. Troopers sales)! Not even the 3DS could help boost the sales; it’s a shame the PS3 version did so badly. Looking forward to seeing the sell-through for both versions, hopefully.

In other news, glad to see Pokémon Mystery Dungeon doing so well. It would be nice if Nintendo could give us info on BD:FF‘s download count to help reassure people that it is doing well, since it appears that the game isn’t being quickly restocked in stores.

If only Vita version sold that much of Hot Shot Golf. :'(

    • JonathanisPrimus

Pokemon didn’t do well at all. It is the worst debut of a Mystery Dungeon Pokemon release ever. Yes, even the GBA port released in 2005 on DS sold more.

As for Hot Shots Golf, the Vita version did over 100k … eventually.

      • I don’t really follow the Mystery Dungeon series so I wouldn’t have followed and compare their debut sales figures to know.

That being said, maybe people are still playing Pokémon Black and White 2 and with Animal Crossing still doing strong and the Professor Layton x Ace Attorney game just released this week, Mystery Dungeon is taking a back seat.

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

This one is had quite a problem as many reviewers actually said that they don’t really like this one. The number of Pokemon you can get is just too little and there are several other things that Nintendo removes end up backfireing here.

          • Really? That’s a shame. I just have to wait for next main Pokémon game for the 3DS then.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

That would be a better choice there. But some of my friend do praise the fact that they are using the 3D model. If you love 3D model, maybe you can consider getting the game.^_^
After all, the number of pokemon usually can increase via free DLC there.

          • That’s true! For the main series, I’m not the bigger supporter of the 3D models (loved them in the 3DS Pokédex and the potential it has for the main series).

However, the anime series has me thinking how much work they have to put into it with over 500 Pokémon using different animations for similar movies. For example, look at the move Bubble: Squirtle would use its mouth whilst Corphish would use its pincers. Some Pokémon have very ambiguous ways of using similar moves e.g. Hyper Beam, IIRC. With the 2D sprites, move animations only need to called from one function making it easier to program.

Sorry for going off-topic, people. :D

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

That would be a very nice thing to see there. I wonder from where will Tentracruel shoot water lol. Tentacle?^_^
And for example Solar Beam. Venusaur and Oddish family will shoot from their plants/head but if some other poke? Where would they shoot that.
I am also lover for the 2D ones here. I love 3D but sometimes i feel, each had their own position there. 3D would be nicer if we are actually playing as the Pokemon while 2D is nicer when we are viewing the Poke from behind.^_^

          • I’m not really sure with Tentacruel, it would be fun to see. :D

Well, Pansage does a Kamehameha-style Solar Beam.

The 3D models definitely have a place in the series. And I totally agree with how you see the usage of 2D/3D styles in Pokémon.

      • Suicunesol

But hold on a minute! Didn’t Mystery Dungeon back then have two different versions coming out? Red/Blue Darkness/Time, etc. But this time there’s only one version. That might have something to do with it.

        • JonathanisPrimus

Even if you split the releases up, the only Mystery Dungeon thing it outsold was GBA Fireteam Red, and 3DS barely outsold it. This isn’t a good debut at all.

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Actually the Gba one sold lesser here. The red one sell around 118k only.(From media-create)
But yeah these want is not doing as well as the other title.
Maybe the not so good review by fans cause the decrease in sales.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Animal Crossing: New Leaf <3 <3

  • OmegaShenron

    bring bravely default here

  • KHSoraKeyBlade

Animal Crossing is still going strong :D and Pokemon didn’t do too bad either!

Paper Mario comes out next week in Japan, I can only imagine it would see some nice numbers as well.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

This week we have Prof Layton vs Phoenix Wright, next week Paper Mario and Konami’s Witch game, and the next two week Fantasy Life and Inazuma Eleven compilation…….. 3DS is going to kill the whole chart.T_T

  • venomz09

damn ex troopers tanked….capcom made a mistake releasing it alongside cod.

not that it was coming anyway but yeah don’t ever expect this game being localized lol.

too bad cuz the game is pretty fun…probably even more than lost planet.

  • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

My poor PSV, Japan really doesn’t want you~. =/

  • Ethan_Twain

Well that’s interesting. When I first read about a game being PS3/3DS multiplatform, my thought was that the 3DS version was inevitably going to be the inferior version. Beyond the graphics differences, the PS3 is better equipped to control shooters with dual analog sticks, and it’s got a great online network for multiplayer too. Beyond that, there isn’t any continuity from the Lost Planet fans on the 3DS, but both of the previous games HAVE been released on the PS3.

But no. Despite all that, the 3DS seems to be the version of choice. Why on earth is that?

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well, i remember they do mention that 3DS is their base development for this game. It is just they ask other company(Forget the name) To port the game to PS3 so i can see why 3DS is a better version here.

    • 3DS is Japan’s go-to platform for games now, and the Monster Hunter community is slowly moving over to that system, too, so both of those factors combined are probably what led to the higher sales on 3DS.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Run for Money+7% this week………. Are U Monster????
Tamagotchi sell quite low there. Will it still stay on chart or not for the next few week is going to be interesting to see.^_^

  • Domii

Ishaan, there must be a mistake with this chart, because you forgot to put COD:Declassified in there……………

    • I’m not sure if Declassified has even been released in Japan yet…

      • Domii

Damn, then I guess my joke was for nothing. lol

  • Ispheria

wow, ex troopers sold way worse than i thought it would

  • d19xx

Must be that pink hair. Only Link can pull it off…

  • puchinri

I am pleasantly surprised that E.X. Troopers did better on the 3DS than the PS3, and while those are great numbers, I’m glad it sold and I hope it has steady numbers~. Very nice to see Bravely Default hanging in there too~.

I really hope we see both titles in the West. ♥

  • brian

I guess that killed any chance we may have had of getting EX Troopers.
But maybe I should be optimistic.
I thought it would at least get 30K~40K total against Blops, but damn.

  • isfuturebright

So the chances of getting Ex Troopers are now 0

  • s07195

Giving a shout out for Kokoro Connect Yochi Random making the chart at all, and Run for Money making the chart as usual. :P
Quite nice to see the 3DS version of EX Troopers top the PS3 version this week.

    • I kinda enjoyed the anime so I would like to see the Vn ver…. But again this is Bamco….
