Ultra Rare NES Shooter Coming To 3DS Virtual Console

By Spencer . December 4, 2012 . 11:01pm

Summer Carnival ’92 Recca is kind of like the Nintendo World Championship cartridge of vertical shoot ’em ups. It’s also the great granddaddy of bullet hell shooters. The game’s speed is pretty amazing considering its a Famciom title. Naxat Soft created Summer Carnival ’92 Recca for a shooter championship in Japan and only sold a few copies. Prices for cartridges cost an arm and a leg, but Nintendo has a much more affordable digital version for Nintendo 3DS.

Summer Carnival ’92 Recca popped up on the Nintendo eShop in Japan. Instead of costing around 20,000 yen ($243) you can get a Virtual Console copy for just 500 yen ($6). Nintendo plans on re-releasing Summer Carnival ’92 Recca and Mega Man 6 as Virtual Console downloads in Japan.

So, this is the game responsible for ruining the genre?

    • Godmars

First thought before watching video and reading your comment: That’s a bit harsh isn’t it.

After watching video: that’s utterly horrible.

      • Julien_N

The video is from a special mode which is harder than the main game because of the suicide bullets.
The Normal difficulty is still tough but is more about the speed of the ennemy formations and bullets than their sheer number.

        • Godmars

I’m talking about general presentation. Might be a special mode, but it garishly ugly.

          • Julien_N

I must admit the presentation can be surprising and unsettling.
The game is a technical feat as the distorsion effects combined to the numerous bullets and ennemies on-screen are not very common for NES games, but parts of the visual result may have aged not that well.

Still, the game is worth checking it out. ^^

it’s just one of the levels

  • Julien_N

I am not interested in the current eShop NES titles but if this comes to PAL/NTSC-U regions, I think I would buy it!
The game is fast-paced, the hitbox is quite huge for the amount of bullets than can be shown on-screen (It is not really on the level of a modern manic-shooter, however) but using the charging bomb is how you can survive the stages and the bosses.
Really, it would be awesome to have this on our eShop. And I think I would play it way more than the few short runs I did on an emulator. Japan got the GB Kid Icarus on the eShop as an import game, so maybe, we could have some import games as well.
(I don’t get my hopes too high because I guess that example was just a promotion for Uprising…)

Recca might have been a great game had it been made for something other than the Famicom. As it is, it’s a flickery, borderline-unplayable mess that’s only notable for being one of the earliest examples (or THE earliest example) of a bullet hell shooter.

    • Rollersnake

Great soundtrack, though, and it’s undeniably a cool game. Just unfortunately not a very good one.

  • ragingmerifes

Now what else would be interesting on the eShop? Highway Star. It’s a racing game made by Squaresoft before Final Fantasy. Surprisingly, it didn’t suck. It was Top Gear-like. It was known in the West as Rad Racer.

  • Zonic505

Heard about this game before being really rare. Now I hope that we’ll get it here in the US.

  • Göran Isacson

Fast? For the NES, yes. Nauseating due to flickering background and choppy graphics? You betcha! I guess that’s some kind of special level and all, but eesh, who could even play that level without having an epilectic fit?

    • Matthew Dickinson

      yeah it’s quite fun.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I remember looking for this game before and the price indeed is absurd. If this game come here, i will surely get this game.^_^

I don’t know the promotion video there is actually using one of the worst video.T_T As the video can scare people away. They should just use the normal stage here.

  • Junko Enoshima

    Ooh, bullet hell shooters. :D

    • drexxia

it’s not bullet hell shmup, just a regular one

  • Guest

Great! Now how about PSN? :D I shouldn’t have bought that pirate NES cartridge…

  • Would buy this just for the novelty if it made it to NA.

  • drexxia

heh, i have the luckiness to own this game, cost me a good 500$, one of the best famicom games

  • Christopher Nunes

I would get this game if it comes out to the US! It looks awesome!

Though it is the great grand daddy of the bullet hell shooters genre, Touhou takes the honor as one of the best and most challenging bullet hell shooter games!

Man I want to play this game, hurry up Nintendo so I can buy it on the eShop!
