<< Last week’s software sales chart

Last week’s best-seller was The 2nd Super Robot Taisen OG, Namco Bandai’s latest mecha crossover game for the PlayStation 3. The 2nd Super Robot Taisen OG sold 217,710 copies in its first week.

At #2 was Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney, which sold 128,856 copies in its first week. Initially announced way back in 2010, the game was finally released last week, following a long period of silence, which was broken around the time of the Tokyo Game Show this year.

We’ll have to wait and see if sales tracker, Media Create, provide any sell-through figures for the game later in the week. Until then, let’s hold off on further judgment.

Next week’s sales column will feature the Wii U launch, giving us an idea of how Nintendo’s new console did in its first week on Japanese store shelves. How will it do? We’ll find out soon enough.

PS Vita seems to be experiencing continued growth and is building a strong user base. The last time I saw sales it was struggling to reach mln.

    • Suicunesol

yeah at this rate it’ll reach 2m in no time

      • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

We should set up betting booths. Will it reach 2 million before Wii U does? That’s actually a legitimate question, btw, and one that should be interesting to see answered six 12 months from now.

        • Suicunesol

We should. Except, I’d also be betting that Wii U will reach 2m before Vita does. :P Only because Mario and Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter. Vita has no such bazookas.

          • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I don’t know how much Monster Hunter will contribute, honestly. I don’t see it helping all that much. An eventual MH4 HD Version will probably do more for the system than 3U.

Dragon Quest remains to be seen, too. Will people upgrade to the Wii U version? Will the ease of playing on the GamePad be a big enough draw? Questions, questions.

I do think Wii U will hit 2 mil. before Vita, but I can’t envision yet what games will help it do that, aside from NSMBU.

          • Suicunesol

Yeah, you have a very good point. Regardless, Dragon Quest+Monster Hunter together have both got to amount to something. They won’t sell the usual numbers, but they’ll still sell some systems. There may be many people who were waiting to play DQ in HD rather than on the Wii.

Will Siliconera be covering Wii U numbers from now on, like you do for the 3DS and Vita?

          • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

You’re right of course; having them is obviously going to be better than not having them. I guess we’ll find out in a few months how much of a difference they really make. It’s hard to predict, since this is kind of a first!

Wii U numbers, yes. We’l be recording those as well from now on. We wanted to start with a fresh hardware cycle, which is why we began from 3DS. All new consoles from this point will be included. :)

    • MrTyrant

Still it has a loooong way to go.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

But I thought you predicted last year that Vita would see a stronger holiday in 2012 than in 2011? :P

      http://bit.ly/TG33LI

      • XYZ_JolteonZ980

I dont know where I went wrong, for it looked like PS Vita would have been aligned to have better sales this year but it seems 3DS is caniballizing its sales everytime Vita makes attempts to get ahead. Beyond price, Vita has everything in place to overtake the market, so I dont know what people have just not seen in it these pass few weeks and at this rate, over the next few weeks :(

        • TheRealMalek

games that are not remake port in better numbers ?

What are these magical must-haves that the Vita has, which you thought would ever possibly enable it to “overtake the market”?

I mean, if you go back and look at that post I linked, it was pretty obvious that Vita began to falter right after its first week.

Doesn’t matter here in the South East Asia. Playstation has always dominate here. Nintendo has never been famous or good in the market here. The line-up of games has always been getting better and the offer of PS+ is worth it, with all the instant game collection.

          • Suicunesol

Which part of South East Asia, if you don’t mind me asking?

          • komiko12

Right… Playstation dominates SE Asia through piracy!!
Playstation hardware sells good enough but software is mostly pirated.

          • Daae12

That has happened in Latin America with Sony consoles since PSOne.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

? Nintendo has always been famous on handheld in South East Asia lol. ( I know many people actually owned Gameboy and DS compared to PSP especially when DS is easier to pirate due to Flash Cart being everywhere.)
Playstation surely always dominate in SE Asia on console front due to the fact that piracy is very rampant here.

          • http://wanabrar.com Rei

First off. Who the hell is talking about piracy here? Get to the topic. I’m taking about game sales as of this post. More and more people has gone original here due to many reasons. Online multiplayer and such, it seem like you’re of of those piracy lovers as well. I don’t usually comment here, so I don’t really know you, but when it comes to piracy talk, I don’t really talk about that as I always buy my game. No offence.

I do understand back then in the PS1,PS2 era. But things have changed here in Malaysia. If you can’t buy them don’t play it.

          • Shaun Huseman

If the PSV would drop it’s price, then the potential is there. It needs a price drop and a top notch triple threat of games to be released.

The nice thing about the Vita is, it can be a powerhouse or it can be home to less visually “realistic” pushing games. By giving it so much power, you have a large base it can cater to. But that also depends on the media. The gaming media tends to completely decimate a game if they dont think the graphics are great. Which they definitely dont need to be to make a great game.

It is pretty saddening because the Vita is powerful and inventive, yet it lags.

          • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Console quality gaming on a big sized screen for deep gaming, robust connectivity options and a consistently updating digital storefront, sleek hardware, seemed like perfect features that would have let it overtake the market. I guess the only area to imrpove is price and getting even more typical traditional console only franchises onto the system, would help it, say if they could get GTA Bioshock Infinite, etc.Isnt that enough to make the PS Vita a hot item?

          • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Everything you said is why the Vita is failing.

    • Tianyu Wei

PSVita is quickly becoming a console for niche jRPGs/Action games… just look at how many niche/fanservice games are on VITA.

Vita won’t die like people expect it too, but it probably won’t over-take 3DS EVER.

But people have to seriously give SONY credits for making such a strong challenge to Nintendo’s handheld market. When was the PSP released? around DS time? And DS is what? the 4th/5th handheld console for Nintendo?

Nintendo had like more than a decade to establish the handheld market, and dominate it.

  • omegashenron

    i want both games

    robots and layton

    • MrTyrant

That’s a good combination actually. Super Layton Wars (?) haha

    • Göran Isacson

Layton would figure out the controls of a super robot in no time, being the puzzle master that he is. And then? Then we will have the best game ever.

  • MrTyrant

    >Not mentioning SRW OG 2nd in the title

You dissapoint me Siliconera. At least I like Layton x Wright enough to be glad that is one of the top selling games.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Headlines have limited space and far more people care about Layton x AA than a series that is rarely even released in the west.

      • MrTyrant

At least we can hope in a Layton x AA realese if Capcom consider.

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Layton x AA was never in any danger of not being brought over.

          • TheRealMalek

Really ? I mean localisation cost for laytons games are quite huge and PW being a no so succesful licence in the west i was really wondering…

          • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I wouldn’t say Phoenix Wright hasn’t been successful in the west. I mean, yeah, it doesn’t sell millions of copies, but it does well enough that Capcom have brought every game in the series over, save for one. And Layton, of course, has been very successful as we’ve seen.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Oh i wanted to ask here. Is Layton fanbase is considerably bigger in Europe than Japan or it is still the biggest in Japan?

          • malek86

The Layton fanbase is much bigger in Europe than any other territory.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

How about PW? Does PW do greatly in Europe too?

          • malek86

Mmmh, I don’t know about those unfortunately. But I don’t think they are particularly high – probably similar to the USA.

          • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Yeah, like @malek86:disqus said, Europe is where Layton sells best. I guess we’ll find out with the release of Miracle Mask if that’s still true in a year or so.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

That is going to be interesting to see.^_^

          • malek86

One thing with Layton now is that the 3DS is being much more successful in Japan than in Europe. Also, in Europe, Miracle Mask can be selected as a free download by XL owners for a time (although I don’t think it will impact sales of the game that much). Overall, given also the slight shift in demographic target from DS to 3DS, there are some chancs for the series to sell more in Japan this time.

          • MrTyrant

Don’t mind me, it was me just being pessimistic. It’s better to be surprise with the good news.

      • Altritter

To be fair, the site does have a lot of SRW fans, the articles get a decent amount of comments. But I can definitely understanding putting AA x Layton in the title instead.

      • https://www.facebook.com/OperationHotblood?ref=hl HeroOfGames16

Then again, there’s a whole campaign, Operation Hotblood, going on to convince Namco Bandai localizing SRW OGs2 for the PS3. Heck, they even got affiliated with Operation Rainfall.

    • brian

Gonna comment on SRW, no intent of being rude.

I’m (relatively) unfamiliar with SRW, and seems to me like it has a new release every few weeks.

It makes me think of Gundam, a massive blob of franchise media that makes no sense to anyone outside its fanbase because each game seems to blur the series into looking like one game, besides those monolithsoft ones.

Most boxart that I’ve seen of them looks basically identical; full of robots and with an elaborate logo.

Just a view of SRW from someone unfamiliar with it and would actually like to try playing one.

      • LynxAmali

OG1 and OG2 for the GBA are a good starting point. Officially released by released by Atlus USA. You could probably find them used on Ebay or something. I know I did.

Original Generations for the PS2 was a remake of the GBA games, combining both of them into a single game. That version has voice acting, graphics enhanced and a few surprises. Gaiden, being a side game to OG2, takes place six months after the events of OGs and introduces some CompatiHeroes characters (sidescroller between Gundam, Ultraman and Kamen Rider for the SNES.) mainly in the form of Dark Brain and CompatiKaiser. 2nd OG takes place after Gaiden.

Then there’s LoE, or Lord of Elemental. That pretty much comes down to Fire Emblem with Giant Robots.

        • MrTyrant

Also people have been waiting for OG for years so it’s not something released every year, those are the normal crossover.

OG is a universe of SRW that has in mind those who don’t watch or didn’t watch animes with mechas since all the character and robots are original. The story is quite good, suprisely well done and the character interaction are like a visual novel or something similar, the branching plot with route split are interesting with the posibility to alter some events if you like.

The reasons that it’s a) Full of Super Robots (MECHA) and b) Not a licensing hell
Are good enough to let the game come to the states and EU. The 2nd Super Robot Taisen OG!
Please Atlus, Namco Bandai, whatever, bring it in English!

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001059050301 Jermaine Kanhai

The Super Robot Wars Original Generation spin-off series is a love note to mecha and anime history in general while having a refined but simplistic Strategy RPG battle system. Like LynxAmali said, it’s basically Fire Emblem with Giant Robots – but even then, it’s loaded with content, has loads of various and colourful characters and has an intriguing plot. It isn’t your mere average Gundam-massive-crossover, it’s more than that.
2nd Super Robot Wars OG is a game that truly deserves to be localized because it doesn’t only offer us special effects and amazements we haven’t seen before, but it does so while retaining its strong but simplistic gameplay and variety of content.
Also, there’s an anime of OG1 and OG2: Divine Wars and The Inspector respectively.

I hope that the numbers of units shipped of pl vs pw doesn’t get too far from the units sold. Certainly the 3ds is on fire on these holydays.

  • $29082171

Those sales numbers are pretty good for Layton vs AA, I hope this makes Level-5 and Capcom to localize it soon.

  • TheRealMalek

does anyone know what were the starting week sales number for ace attorney 4 ?

i wonder where PW vs layton is.

    • Göran Isacson

What this guy says. Over 100k copies sold sounds neat to me, but I could be very wrong.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

250,186 first week for Apollo Justice. Layton x AA sales do look incredibly low, but I want to wait for a shipment figure before we start groaning about Level 5′s declining sales figures again.

      • malek86

Uhm, I think they look kinda ok. Crossovers never manage to reach a wide audience between the fanbases they try to cover, usually because they can’t please everyone. Also I have a feeling the game will keep on selling for a while.

If it turns out sell-through is not that high, and I had to think of a reason why, it could be that Professor Layton and Ace Attorney aren’t quite aimed at the same audience, with Layton being more aimed at families while Ace Attorney is more aimed at a teenage audience and fanbase imho (but I could be wrong on this).

Also, the different designs kinda clash. I still say crossovers should try and reach a common design for all the series they cover, even at the cost of making the characters less recognizable.

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Mrrrgh. This game could and should’ve done much better than it did, IMO. Level 5′s horrendous habit of announcing stuff two years before it’s anywhere close to complete didn’t help at all.

Also, if sell-through is high, it could simply be that retailers refused to take on anymore stock. But I guess we’ll see, yeah. Hopefully, M-C will provide further insight.

          • malek86

How much better though? Like I said, it seems like the two audiences are clashing. Maybe AA fans don’t really care for puzzle solving, while Layton players don’t wanna have to deal with courtroom and visual novel antics. I still think the two targets are different enough that a crossover couldn’t please both.

Also add the fact that AA fans probably see this game as a non-canon placeholder while they wait for AA5 (which has already been announced not long ago), especially if it doesn’t have many other characters aside from PW and his assistant, which might have put some fans off. And also, that Layton sales has been in a bit of a downward spiral since the first game’s release (granted Miracle Mask wasn’t helped by the 3DS’s bad launch, and the last DS game probably came out when the platform was too old), and I don’t think it could have done that much better.

Ok, I was expecting 170k or so, so I guess this fell a bit short of my expectations. But I wasn’t expecting more than 200k or anything. I know some crossovers seem to have trouble selling.

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I heard from Neogaf there that they overship once more. Famitsu mention the game sell rate does not exceed 50% which i think is quite bad.T_T

        • malek86

Mh, that’s not so good, I guess. Maybe there will be more info soon.

Hell yes, G-Bunkwaran. I freaking love that thing (Wish it had an ALL attack though). I hope it combines with Compatikaiser in the next game or something.

    • z_merquise

WTF!!?!?! A Banchou-inspired mech!? I never seen that character before so I’ll assume that’s a new one for this game.

And that music! Sounds like it’s by Koji Hayama (theme music for Gunleon, Baran Doban and Chou Aniki games).

      • MrTyrant

Yeah, he is a new character for OG and is the rival/schoolfriend of Kouta (Compatible Kaiser) His mech was created by Kouta’s grandfather based on Dygenguard/Aussreiter, also it seems he has a crush on Kouta’s sister Shouko.

Gotta love when they create characters like that.

is it just me or is this the first time in a long time that a 3DS game hasn’t been #1?

For the past 3 weeks yeah. Before that was Xillia 2 another Namco Bandai game, lol.
