Final Fantasy IV Climbs Mt. Ordeals, Returns As iPhone And Android Game

By Spencer . December 6, 2012 . 10:05pm

imageSquare Enix is bringing Final Fantasy IV to iOS on December 20. The game will be available on Android in spring 2013.

Just to be clear because there are so many versions of Final Fantasy IV, we’re talking about the Nintendo DS remake with 3D character models and the augment system. Final Fantasy IV for Nintendo DS was a bit harder than other versions. To make the mobile phone release more accessible, players will be able to select a difficulty level.

Final Fantasy IV will be released worldwide with Japanese, English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Chinese (Simplified and traditional characters) for 1,800 yen ($22).

    Wow! This is great news!

You see, I don’t have a SNES, a PS1, a PS3, a PSP, a GBA, a DS, or a WonderSwan Color, or really any gaming console whatsoever, but I really wanted to play Final Fantasy IV. Thanks, Square!

    • FFVI? Nah, let us rejoice in the spoony bard music once more.

    • I don’t get why people make such a big deal about ports and exclusivity to be honest. Maybe people would prefer playing a game on one system versus another? And games are the only medium where exclusivity is even an issue to begin with.

  • Lucas .

Awesome news. Good to see games like this one on mobile devices.

  • WingsOfEternity

“players will be able to a difficult level.”
    How do I shot web?

  • They had BETTER use the actual DS version translation in this one.

  • Romangelo

    OOOOOH another FFIV port….

  • komiko12

It’s good. The Augment system was really nice.

    • AuraGuyChris

Screw that! I miss using the characters that left you, and I grew up with the Game Boy Advance version.

      • komiko12

The Augment System was good because it allows you to put some abilities of past party members to your characters. In a way, it’s like they are leaving a part of them with you because in the original FFIV, the only characters who went to the moon were the Final 5.

  • AkuLord3

Seriously…SquareEnix what is ur weird love to this game? yeah 4 was good but COME ON where’s 5? WHERE’S 6?!. Wait… 4,7, 10, 13…people never shutting up about an HD FF7…
    4+7+1+0+1+3=16, 1+6=7…MY GOD!!!
anyway yeah can’t wait for that X360 Version COME ENIX U KNOW U WANNA!!!

    • CirnoLakes

Well it is, in my opinion, the best Final Fantasy game they’ve ever made. It it not weird to love the best Final Fantasy game ever made.

They can’t possibly give it too much love, in my eyes. And to be honest, a Final Fantasy VII remake doesn’t sound all that interesting to me.

    • Göran Isacson

Oh Lord. You’ve done it. You’ve cracked the code.

What exactly the code is and what it stands for I have no idea, but darn if you didn’t crack it!

  • TheSwordUser

Very good that it’s the 3D version.
Those PSP sprites are absolutely dreadful imo, but YMMV.

  • I’m excited about this. While mobile phones weren’t the best choice in the world for Final Fantasy III (I found that I played it in shorter bursts and I’d often get turned around in dungeons if I left the game for a while, which lowered my motivation to get through them at times), I still had a great deal of fun with the Android port and eventually finished the game and most of the side content. Looking to do the same with this one too!

  • kylehyde

Is strange that not in spanish, since the DS version included it. Still I played it in english.

  • Yvonne Tsang

    Here we go…

  • Elvick

Call me when it’s the PSP version. DS versions are hideous. The 3D models don’t lend well to much of anything. Especially the dancers in IV. Just looks stupid in the remake, looks just as purposefully goofy in 2D.

    • I’m really going to have to disagree. I thought what they achieved on the DS was wonderful. It felt like a PSOne game done really well.

This is one of my favourite scenes from the entire game:

      • Elvick

        Not surprised.

That’s how opinions work. People often disagree over things.

        I think they’re terrible.

        • That’s not saying much. You should also keep in mind the limits of DS hardware. For all its limits, I’d say the game managed to strike a balance between keeping the game stable and shaping the models to look just descriptive enough – which is commendable as far as the craftsmanship goes.

          • Elvick

I don’t like it. He does.

            What’s there to say?

Oh right sorry. “You should hate it and if you don’t you should feel bad.” Happy?

          • I’m not addressing anything about preferences. I’m just saying there was a reason it looked “terrible”, and looking any better than that wasn’t exactly an affordable possibility.

Unless what you meant by “terrible” was that you didn’t like it, in which case, I admittedly got a different impression. Pay it no mind.

          • Yeah, I can see how some people may not like the 3D in the DS games. I personally always like seeing something presented in a new way, and I love seeing developers push hardware, especially on lower-powered machines. Square, especially, are really fantastic at doing that.

  • Can we have a Type 0 version of FFIV for 3DS too? I totally want another FFIV. Put GILGAMESH in it too, so I can have a reason to buy it and stuff.

Yeah I’m getting tired of the re-release of FFIV. But if it sells in the popular iOS and Android market then good for them. They could use all the money they can get.

    • we have a rule regarding console request. Please read it before posting.

      • alixraen

I read his comment as more sarcastic tongue-in-cheek than serious.

      • I don’t view 3DS as a console and it was more of a sarcastic remark giving Square’s track record of re-releasing FFIV in the same vein as exhaling carbon dioxide into the air.

  • Awesome, I’ve been playing FFIII on my droid so this will be a great addition

  • FFmax

Final Fantasy IV for the Wii-U. I’m calling it now.

  • Just Tim

I just hope this game won’t be subjected to an Android equivalent of the Square Enix tax, which I remember…

Either way, I’m glad this is on Android. (Now, if only Square Enix orders Taito to bring over its library to Android…)

  • kupomogli

So PSP still has the best version.

The 3DS version is great though too. Graphically it’s not too great and they zoom so close to the characters when in dungeons, but the augment system is a really good addition.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

      ??? I never knew 3DS had FF4 remake here?

  • Jay

:| Squenix get back to me when you FINALLY decide to do something with my beloved Final Fantasy VI to which I will be all over.

    I’m so sick of hearing about IV and VII. Seriously, quit overhyping these games that I can’t stand anymore. -___-;;

  • Gazic

They’d better not be lying about this Android release like they did with Final Fantasy Dimensions.

  • K.PL

I am not one to complain about them remaking one game and not another.. but I mean, they have remade Final Fantasy IV so many times now, why not move on to another? I I love IV it is probably one of my favorite ones but still, I still would like to see a few of them made after it remade.
