Dragon Quest VII Looks More Lively On Nintendo 3DS

By Spencer . December 13, 2012 . 6:59pm

Square Enix released a trailer for Dragon Quest VII and the game looks gorgeous on Nintendo 3DS. Monsters have different attack animations in battle and you can see your party. (Well their backs!) New for Dragon Quest VII is party members look different on the field when you change their classes.

Here’s what the original Dragon Quest VII looked like on PsOne. (Good memories!)

Dragon Quest VII is slated for release on February 7, 2013.

Quickly, inject it in my veins. NOA, NOE, or the western branches of Square Enix, whoever, localize this pronto.

…I guess it only happens with the “Square side” games…>.<

  • Nicolas Vasquez

well thats a lot more than what they have done with the FF (LOL)remakes.

  • Rafael Budzinski

…man, only this and Megaten 4 can fulfill my hunger for good RPGs nowadays…

  • Lightthrower

Did the trailer say if there’s new classes?

  • Pockystix

    well

    I want it

  • pinta_177

i dont think they will port this to the vita right?, crap now I will have to buy 3DS JUST for one game, F YOUUU SQUAREEEE

    • Barrylocke89

Well at least you can enjoy all of the other JRPGs that are on the 3DS along with it now ;)

      • seyEliveD

All the others? For western releases I can only think of DS:OC and ToA for JRPGs, both of which are either a port or remake.

        • Barrylocke89

Fair enough, there aren’t many. Though you can add Dempa Men and KH3D to that list, and Etrian Odyssey IV will at least be out in a couple of months.

If you like Dragon Quest you would of had a DS prior right?

  • Foryth

Wow, I wasn’t expecting that much of an upgrade, this looks amazing! I spent a lot of time on the original and this makes me want to spend at least as much time playing this one.

  • pressUPfororanges

It does look great, but the way it sounds is just superb.
Orchestral Dragon Quest makes me weak in the knees.

  • GaiunxWolfenX

ok, i’ll admit the first time i played this game on my psx i wasn’t very hyped, the beginning was really slow and i didn’t have the patience, nor i knew anything about the franchise, but i gotta admit after seeing this trailer am HYPED to get this game C’MON SE bring it to this side of the pond, and if you are not busy or anything give us a remake of FF6 XD and that another AMAZING looking RPG you just made for the 3DS XD

  • Enzo

Wow, seeing this in motion looks amazing. It really animates a relatively still world that was the original.

  • Suicunesol

I wonder how much this is gonna sell. 500,000? 800,000? It’s definitely a major release.

Great music. It almost makes me want to buy the game.

DQVI on DS managed 906,458 in its first week alone. As I understand it, DQVII is the more popular game but at the same time, the 3DS userbase isn’t as large as the Nintendo DS userbase was.

For further reference, earlier this year, Terry’s Wonderland 3D managed 513,183 in its first week. Since DQVII is a mainline game and not a spin-off, I’m thinking… 700-800k first week sounds reasonable.

  • Solomon_Kano

This looks incredible. I only played DQVIII back on PS2 and I loved that, so I’m definitely going to pick this up. I need to get IX and the DS remakes as well.

  • Lester Paredes

I know my wife would devour this. She loved it on PSOne! The nice new and pretty images would only make her happier!

  • ragingmerifes

Amazing. I love you, Square Enix, even though I hate you.

  • YourAshyAss_Elbows

I’ll wait to be excited when it’s localized.

  • disgaea36

Yes omg this looks so amazing I can’t wait to get I have no doubt that it will come state side since practialy we got all the other dragon quest games even joker and that slime one. Wow Im so pumped I never got to finish the original cause my copy was stolen damn thief. Now I get a second chance so far the 3ds is rocking a storm compare to the vita. :D

  • komiko12

I just love it when I see my characters in battle. Many games only shows pictures of your party members. It is still better when you see them do the attacks :D

Instant pre-order! Studying Japanese does come in handy now and then. x)

But it really does look like they put much effort into it. Never had a psx so missed out on a lot of great rpg’s it seems.

To all the people in the DQ7 thread from a couple weeks ago complaining that the game was going to have sub-PS2 graphics: this is why you don’t judge the graphics for 3DS games based on blown-up screenshots.

  • Shadowman

    Please localize.

  • Eilanzer

    Nostalgia level up Ç_Ç

Eheh…the Dragon Quest main theme at the end won me over. It always does. It always makes me feel like this is an epic adventure just waiting for me to begin.

I love Dragon Quest, and I wish for this series to stay awesome as long as it can. And I also hope NoE brings it over to the Old Continent (and the other amazing PAL regions ofc!). We never got the chance to (officially) unravel this amazing entry in this long time series, and since we were given DQ’s IV to VI, VIII and IX…why not give us the missing piece in between all this awesomeness?

More so when (iirc), NoE was really pleased with how DQ IX fared in the PAL territories.

  • http://www.facebook.com/magius.necros Magius Necros

Simply amazing. I hope they localize. I really want this.

  • http://twitter.com/FJLink All-Snowy Efe Jota

So, is it going to have multiple save slots? My mum would love to play this.

    • KingGunblader

      Your mum sounds amazing.

  • Machineguntommy

I know it’s more likely this will make it to the U.S. because all the other DQ DS games have. But I really really hope that is the case. My concern is it’s a 150 Hour game and they may not want to go through the trouble of localizing it given DQ6′s sales. However after playing the PS1 game halfway (halfway being about 70 hours) and stopping for some reason, I’ve always wanted to go back to it. This would be perfect. Please bring it over NOA/SE

I played through the ps1 Dragon Warrior 7, and yes it was Warrior not Quest on the ps1, game 3 times, all 3 with over 100 hours played, and never beat the final dungeon. Not sure why, but I guess for me the quest to get to the end was more enjoyable than actually finishing it. All the little short stories in this game were just plain fun to see play out, and yeah, I really do mean short stories. Every section of this game can easily be its own short story with characters you only meet there who have personalities, and make the sad segments even more sad, and the happy segments even more happy.

I don’t own a 3ds. I will own this game if/when it releases here in the west. The only problem I have with it is hearing they are doing away with random encounters, which I find rather said to be honest. The only gripe I really had with the original was the extreme grinding on job classes, and the sheer amount of classes to choose from, though with the power they unleashed I guess it was understandable, and choice is never a bad thing.

I have played through DQ 6 on DS, just bought DQ 4, own the original nintendo version of that game too. I am hunting for a new copy of DQ 5, as I am really looking forward to it. I have my fingers crossed that someday they will release the first 3 as well, as 1 is nostalgic, 2 was really hard and satisfying, and 3 was just fun, and was the real start of the class changing found in later chapters.
