Spy Mickey, A Disney Action Figure Fighting Game, And Other Lost Disney Projects

By Spencer . January 2, 2013 . 1:40pm

Disney Interactive and Junction Point Studios released Epic Mickey in 2010, but years before the Wii game came out Buena Vista Games was experimenting with different ideas for a Mickey Mouse focused action game. One of the concepts revealed by a former BVG artist was Spy Mickey.

Disney was also kicking around an idea of making a fighting game where different action figures fight each other a la Super Smash Bros.

Actually I could get behind a disney smash bros.

    • lanmanna

It would be cool to have Sora in it.

      • Herok♞

Honestly I just want to see Sora in some fighting game still kinda surprising he wasn’t in Dissida.

        • Göran Isacson

Not really, that game was all about Final Fantasy heroes and villains, not Kingdom Hearts. Like I get how you can think that “heh, wouldn’t it be funny if Sora, himself a cross-over hero, gets to be in a cross-over game”, but I don’t think there was ever any real REASON for him to be there since he’s not that connected to the world of Final Fantasy.

          • Herok♞

pretty much just want the situation you described

          • Göran Isacson

Replying to RH7X9 here as I for some reason can’t down on his comment: An interesting tidbit, even if the only source I can find for it on Wikipedia just says that Kingdom Hearts 2 “inspired” them to work on a fighting game in a 3D-space. Still I found a Siliconera article saying
that Nomura planned to make the game into a KH-game, but unfortunately the sources on that post have all disappeared :(

Still, I think that my point still stands in that they decided that KH was an unsuitable universe for the kind of game they had in mind AND they had, according to the Wiki-source, planned to create some kind of anniversary game. And as such, I believe that Dissidia became closed to Sora the second they decided to make it all about an anniversary game for the franchise of Final Fantasy. Sora may be part of a succesful franchise, but he’s not really part of Final Fantasy and as such, not really part of Dissidia, even if his series “inspired” its creation.

I would have played the hell out of a Disney Smash Bros. I’d main Stitch so hard.

  • I’d love a disney smash bros.

  • SpellcraftQuill

Disney wouldn’t let their characters beat each other up except in Kingdom Hearts. At least the Beast would have been in.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

could work as an Mini game in KH3

    • Vulpis

That’s a thought–then again, the Herc’s world in the main games already kinda covers that.

  • Jesse Torres

    disney smash bros sounds interesting.

  • Rayshawn Davis

People would’ve ripped on a Disney smash bros like Sony’s PSABR game. Maybe not as intense, but enough that die hard fans of SSB would have gotten their point across that no one should copy their “precious”.

    • Herok♞

I don’t think Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion or TMNT:Smash Up got any hate.

      • lanmanna

They didn’t get hate because they were on Nintendo consoles/Sony made PS All Stars. It’s ridiculous all the hate PSABR gets.

        • Herok♞

Both were also on the Sony consoles as well but the main point I am making is Disney bros wouldn’t necessary get hate from hardcore smash fans.

          • Rayshawn Davis

That depends, I’ve seen hate on Battle Stadium DON despite the game being based on iconic popular franchises. I have also seen hate on TMNT: Smash, especially this game. The hate is there, it just depends on how loud people vocalize it for you to notice it.

          • Göran Isacson

I dunno, this may be simply because I haven’t been following whatever blogs you have been following, but I didn’t see much hate for DON or TMNT: Smash until after reviews were in and they turned out to just be kinda mediocre games. At first people were just kinda excited to see a Turtles game with such a big cast, and I think that’s what Playstation All Stars did wrong, at least in the start of its PR-phase: the cast just looked so lack-luster. I doubt this game would be getting any real hate if it included the characters in the concept art, and other classic and memorable Disney characters.

BUT. If the game were to, say, have a trailer which first just shows off Hanna Montana or Zack and Cody and THEN call it… I dunno, Disney Smash Stars or something? Then the internet would bring down the wrath/mockery/scorn, and it would be pretty well-deserved.

          • Herok♞

the thing about hate for themed games is you have to know what it is about, like DON could be the fact that some people don’t like the 3 animes its about, like for me those 3 are all time favorites for others they could hate them with a burning passon. Playstation:ASBR got hate because Sony made a direct Smash Bros competitor with weird rules (Pretty much it was like if Final Smashes were the only thing to kill you type deal).

          • Elvick

The Super Meter is almost nothing like Final Smashes. The only thing similar is the idea of some ‘big’ attack. Which is nothing SSB invented. That’s been in video games for ages, and anime and other media even longer than that.

          • Herok♞

well I know that the super meter is different, I was just making a comparison statement

        • Di_Elle

I don’t think very many people hate on Sony Smash Bros. on the basis of brand loyalty as much as it just being a bad game.

          • lanmanna

Playstation All Stars is good. :(

          • Elvick

$50 says at least 90% of the people that trash it, don’t even own a PS3 or PS Vita and have never played the game.

Another $50 says most of the hate is from Nintendo fanboys. The same people that call every kart racer ever to come out a Mario Kart ripoff. Even though MK isn’t even the pinnacle of the genre.

          • Herok♞

can I get that $50 then I own both a Vita and PS3(PSN:Cyberninja776 if you want to check my trophies to verify it), tried and still didn’t like the game.

          • Elvick

Um, I said 90%. Last I knew, that wasn’t “everyone”.

          • Herok♞

Well I know more people like me who have tried the game, through the beta or demo and still didn’t like it so if anything it would be 50% because people are more reasonable then you think.

          • Elvick

            No, they aren’t.

Nearly everyone is in the mindset of “I don’t like it, therefore it’s terrible and everyone who likes it has bad taste in games.” OR even worse “This person (reviewer) doesn’t like it, therefore the game I have never ever played and had no interest in anyway is terrible and people who like it are stupid fanboys.”

The actual reasonable people are few and far between.

          • Herok♞

The game really isn’t that bad when you get down to it, sure it could be better but then again it was sony’s first try which is why I don’t absolutely hate it

          • DelRio

I don’t own a PS3, but I have played it several times at my friend’s house, honestly, I’m a self declared Nintendo fanboy and I enjoyed the game immensely.
I wish more people would make games from the SSB engine.

      • TMNT: Smash was made by Masahiro Sakurai though…. You can’t rip yourself off.

      • Elvick

Actually, I remember seeing TONS of people trash them both. More so TMNT, since I paid more attention to it at the time. Lost interest with the roster.

  • Elemiel

Wasn’t Dissidia originally going to be some kind of Disney fighting game? That fighting game should happen.

    • OathkeeperSoraXIII

I heard it originally started out as a KH fighting game but Disney said no because they didn’t want to see their characters fighting each other. That’s what I heard at least

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Rocketeer!!! Holy shit I want that! (As long as it isn’t like Dark Void…)

  • Anna Scruton

    Disney Smash Bros yesplz.

  • Disney Smash Bros. should’ve happened. Spy Mickey as well. Hopefully this would be picked up again in the future. These games shows promise to both Disney and KH fans.

  • Göran Isacson

Rocketer and Disney Brawl would have been so amazing. Just LOOKING at the concept art just makes me smile in delight for what could be.

  • kylehyde

A disney Smash bros, sounds good to me and actually have a lot of convincing characters for make it happen (Aladdin, Jaffar, Mulan, Ralph, Captain Li Shang, Shan Yu, Merlin, Hercules, Hades, Stitch, Gantu, Beast, Gaston, Clayton, Tarzan, Chernabog, Ursula, Peter Pan, Captain Hook, Maleficent, prince phillip, robin hood, Sheriff of Nottingham, John Smith, Quasimodo, Kida, Commander Rourke, Jim Hawkins, Long John Silver, Eugene, King Candy, Simba, Scar, Queen of Hearts, Mowgli, Loui, Shere Khan, The Horned King, Taran), if Cartoon network made one, why not they.

  • i want that disney fighting game.

  • Cameron Ward

and i bet all of these games would have been than Epic Mickey 2

  • HassanJamal

This sounds way better than Epic Mickey IMO Continue the development now that they’ve got Marvel and the Star Wars brand!

  • YourAshyAss_Elbows

All of these concepts look better than Epic Mickey

  • Bueno

Disney fighting game please. Make Mulan’s theme music “Be a Man” and I’ll pre-order it immediately.

  • Vulpis

The fighting game looks interesting. But take the Rocketeer and turn it into a lightweight MMO, and they would have made a mint.

    • M’iau M’iaut

It seems like stories of a Rocketeer reboot show up every few years. Wouldn’t complain much about that myself, even with Billy Campbell chewing the hell out of the scenery, it was a fun movie.

  • Lester Paredes

Disney Smash Bros. clone? If it played reasonably well, I’d certainly buy it. Hoping Stitch would have been involved somehow. lol. and Spy Mickey’s concept art looks cool. It’s a shame Disney doesn’t play around with it’s own characters as much as they used to.

  • npcomplete

Would’ve been pretty cool! But I think the impression it gives to most casual or non-gamer is that it’s un-Disney-like. Clashes with their image

  • ✖Samuel Blanco✖

What The Rocketeer? C’mon Disney work on it!

  • courte

this is only ok. if it’s Melee as bawls, of course with it’s own little personal tweaks and personality.

  • Spy Mickey looked interesting.
