By Ishaan . January 9, 2013 . 9:44am

Yesterday, Nintendo revealed the next generation of Pokémon games—Pokémon X/Y, which are in development for the Nintendo 3DS. As with the previous games, the mascot monsters for both titles are two legendary Pokémon. Now, we know their names.

Xerneas (pronounced ZURR-nee-us)

Yveltal (pronounced ee-VELL-tall)

Pokémon X/Y will be released worldwide in October 2013.

  • MrRobbyM

Xerneus is easily one of my favorite legendaries. Up there with Lugia and Mewtwo.

    • Revorse

I agree. He looks pretty beast

    • AkuLord3

I would like him more if it didn’t give me FOE feelings…Deers…DEERS EVERYWHERE!!

      • porkiewpyne

Technically, the plural of deer is….. deer LOL [/grammar nazi]
        XD I’m just teasin’

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I actually liked Yveltal more here. The three wings is kinda bringing the terror for me.^_^

      • Looks like one massive claw going for its prey~ <3

        • Amagidyne

That’s just made me think of those crane-game claws. LEGENDARY CRANE-GAME POKEMON GO.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I fear being ratata then.T_T Imagine being picked up like crane by this legend.T_T

          • Leonardo Duarte

            Welcome to the pokémon world!

            blah blah blah…

And remember: If you see a spot of shadows above you, you’re fuc***. Have fun.

            *You character gets minimized*

      • MrRobbyM

Yveltal is pretty scary but also cool. I just have a thing for majestic, noble creatures.

        • Yveltal scary? Pfft.

Then again, it kinda looks like a virus, but meh, Xerneas gets intimidation points from me.

          • Yveltal looks like it can eviscerate everything it lays its eyes upon

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

So this one will be like, Terror vs Majestic? That actually sounds nice lol.^^

        • Renaldi Saputra

pretty scary?? I think it’s just cool not that scary..
I think pokemon don’t have any scary monster.. maybe deoxys for exception

      • Serpenter Rex

Yveltal for me too. Its one of the coolest looking legendaries since Giratina, whom it sort of reminds me of. Very cool~

That doesn’t mean I dislike Xerneas though. It also looks fascinating. Hoping that Z beast will be just as badass.

    • $39420547

i think Xerneus looks really noble

    • MediaMindControl

The new Deer is out! My fave legendary with Arceus and deoxys. Dialga just felt like a mistake to me.

      • MrRobbyM

Maybe Xerneus has some sort of close relationship with Arceus? That would be cool.

Deoxys….yeah. His concept was better on paper. Though his speed and defense forms were kinda cool I guess.

        • MediaMindControl

Yeah I meant mostly design wise. I always favored those pokemon with flexibility, and they kind of made deoxys a single pokemon eevee but in a stat form, then later took that same concept and made it better with arceus, and the elements.

  • Xerneas look a lot like forest god in Mononoke Princess , you know ?

    • Agreed, first thing I thought of when I saw it. Also I seem to remember a scene where it transforms in a rainbow light into a giant creature.

  • So we got the fifth Colossus and the forest spirit from Princess Mononoke. Nice.

  • puchinri

They both look really cool, but I wonder what the story behind them and everything is.

  • DarthSithZero

Right now Yveltal is my version but my final decision will depend on which version have more cool exclusive pokemons

  • Suicunesol

The story behind them is that if they mate, they’ll produce the super powerful XY Pokemon, Yvelnerex. Team ********* wants to make them mate to produce this super powerful Pokemon to rule the world, and its the players job to stop them from mating and save the world.

    • They better stop me too then. Cuz I’m gonna breed the Z Pokemon and own the peoples with it.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

……..Mating never sounds cooler than this lol.

    • grevlinghore

Yup. I totally see a deer humping a dragon ><

  • Xerneas is practically the only legendary that intimidates me, even by a small margin. Thus it is an instant favorite and I will DARE to catch it.

    • Tails the Foxhound

The 22-foot spider-dragon ghost doesn’t scare you? Not even knowing he was banished from this world for his cruelty and that he’s always watching from his realm? Giratina scares the hell out of me.

      • I’m going by appearances, really. Giratina looked pretty beast when I first say it. Didn’t scare me. Not even Mewtwo when you don’t include the movie. But Xerneas…wow. This one looks like a real king. A holier-than-thou guardian or something. You don’t wanna know what those antlers are made of or what comes out of them. Though I’m partly guilty of making that notion because of first-second fanart.

        • Tails the Foxhound

Wow, that’s pretty badass. It’s too ‘majestic’ for me to be afraid of it though, ‘wary’ or maybe ‘daunted’ is what I would feel, but not afraid. Too many bright colors.

  • Glad we know their names and they sound good, but I really am looking forward to knowing what type they will be

  • Guest

    Yveltal <3

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

I like Yveltal better but the deciding factor of which version I will buy depends on the version exclusive Pokemon.

  • isotrex

Those legendaries are awesome. Too bad, the starters kinda suck. I wonder how they’ll look like on their full evolution.

  • ragingmerifes

I’ll only think about buying it if there is a Pokémon Z, with a chinese dragon being the legendar, because they look like Z’s.

    • Aravas

Pretty sure there will be a Z, to fit with the XYZ 3D planes scheme they have going, but I really doubt it’s going to be a Chinese dragon.

    • Renaldi Saputra

      shen long

  • I can’t wait to find out:
    1. How much the Pokédex will changed.
    2. The next evil organisation and their objectives.
    3. Gym leaders, Elite 4 and Champion.

Back on topic, I haven’t found a Pokémon that I ultimately hate but these legendaries are looking awesome; I just have to get both versions. Whilst Xerneas looks majestic, Yveltal looks like it would fit nicely in the LoZ (Legend of Zelda) series.

I get the feeling, that, Xerneas will be a either Normal-something or Psychic-something; Yveltal to be Dark/Flying.

    • LordSkyline

I really hope there is no Dark or Ghost or Psychic Elite Four member this time around… especially Dark and Psychic feels so overused now (there was a Dark user in 3 of the 5 Generations, same for Psychic), also a non-mostly Dragon using Champion would be neat.

      • I’d like to see changes there too; an Electric, Flying or Grass user(s) would be a nice change to the usual suspects.

Well, to be fair, most Champions haven’t been mostly using Dragon-types but I also prefer to have Champion that has variety of Pokémon.

  • Strain42

  • SirRichard

Yveltal almost seems to have coming screaming out of another JRPG, it’s definitely my preferred of the two.

  • ViewtifulBo

Maybe I’m the only one but I hope I can create and customize the actual trainer. At least skin color and hairstyle…

    • Draparde

no…you are not ><. im hopeing for that too honestly. i always sighed when doing double battles and me and my friends trainer (and maybe even 1 or two people on the other side) look EXACTLY the same…

  • MikeTxn

No matter how many times I read the name, I keep reading it as Xemnas.

    • Tien Ron

LOOOOOL maybe you will meet the forest blade master to

    • DurableTomb

I thought the same thing. And in the case of Yveltal…

  • IshimaruKaito

Yveltal kinda reminds me of .HACK a lil bit

    • I put down LoZ but .hack – more specifically the Root series, to me – is a way better fit. Good one!

    • Renaldi Saputra

that’s why I like it more

  • Spider-Man

Kinda weird to pronounce at first. I read Xerneas as Xemnas for some reason at first glance. :

Yveltal is my favorite of the two.

  • haqua

Dark/Psychic (or Steel?) for Xerneas and Dark/Flying for Yveltal perhaps? I’ll be surprised if the former ends up as a Grass type, to be honest, but that’s just because of the color scheme.

Well, anyway, this is the first time in a while where I’ve REALLY wanted both. For other generations, I already knew (Lugia, Dialga, Reshiram) but this time… ;; Well, my brother said he likes Yveltal better so I guess I’ll be getting Spectrum Chital. That thing’s freakin’ gorgeous.

So, I guess this is going to have a Land vs. Sky theme in a way? Colorful vs. Colorless? Might explain why this gen isn’t titled after colors/gems.

    • Because people have been considering what the ‘x’ and ‘y’ stand for: dimensions or chromosomes? After looking at the comments of others, I think its the latter.

I feel that they will have a connection to the alteration of DNA structures, in some way. Or, Xerneas maybe a ‘Guardian of the Forest’ legend; not sure what connection to the sky Yveltal has.

note: Will edit once I’ve watched the trailer again.

edit: Having watched it again, I feel that Yvaltal will reside in a mountainous or desert region. You’re probably right that it will be a land vs sky theme. Just have to wait and see.

      • Aravas

X is horizontal, Y is vertical. Xerneas is grounded and Yveltal flies.

        • That strongly coincides with the possible theme of the titles.

If there is going to be a Z version, it would probably be a creature that lives in sea – to represent depth.

          • Aravas

Likely, yeah. Probably some sort of serpent, to more easily represent the letter Z.

          • Suicunesol

This is all starting to look like Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza…

          • It seems to be going that way, doesn’t it?

@aravas:disqus I love to see serpent-like legendary Pokémon, and would probably be easier to associate with ‘z’.

  • grevlinghore

Actually, they are Shishigami from Mononoke Hime, and Atar from The Last Story… but hey! Whatever works, right?

    • haqua

I don’t get the Shishigami comparison. Because Xerneas has crystalline-looking antlers and is blue…? If there’s anything beyond that, I’m not really seeing it…

      • Suicunesol

And its juxtaposed against a forest. Those three things are good enough to warrant comparison.

  • SirTeffy

So, it’s official, they’ve run out of names that make sense and are now just banging on the keyboard at random to make new legendaries.

    • Aravas

The 3D planes are X, Y, and Z. These games are on the 3DS. Xerneas is grounded while Yveltal is airborne. If the third game is not Pokémon Z, then Game Freak successfully trolled everyone. Is the genius creativity that went behind the names and legendaries clear now?

      • LordSkyline

The Japanese Logo has DNA strings in it, so it might be that (we already had some dealing with Pokemon DNA combination with Black2/White2) so it’s also likely to be that.

        • Aravas

Yup. There’s no rule against having multiple themes anyway. Dialga and Palkia represented diamonds and pearls (Dialga’s part metal, since that’s the closest typing to diamonds, and Palkia’s water, since pearls are found in water) as well as time and space.

    • Suicunesol

Because Lugia, Celebi, Rayquaza, Manaphy, etc. all make sense.

    • Eh… that could be said about many of the Legendaries’ names. But considering how big the Pokémon fandom is, somewhere, sometime, somebody will find out some possible name etymology for all of them; just wait.

  • TheInternetNomad

Xerneus reminds me of a sassy version of the Tree Spirit in Mononoke.

  • Tails the Foxhound

I kinda don’t like these names, they’re kinda tough to say. I’m certainly not gonna remember them that quick (I actually already forgot them :p). Though the names do exude an air of power, so that’s good at least.

  • LordSkyline

Am I the only one thinking that it would cool Xerneas’ Secondary Type was depended on current Season :O (something like Grass in Spring, Fire in Summer, I guess water? in Fall and Ice in Winter) dynamically of course.

  • Göran Isacson

OH. OH. X AND Y. OH I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE AND PROMPTLY DROPPED BRICKS oh god I don’t even know if these designs are hella weak or actually pretty clever.

  • natchu96

    Majesticly intimidating vs. . . . thing-that-just-looks-unnatural intimidating?

  • JustThisOne

Actually, Xerneas reminds me much more of that forest guardian from Princess Mononoke. I know that creepy face thing is in the wrong place, but the crazy antlers are what seals the deal for me.

    Which is awesome.

  • S- Class Wizard KaRamo

    Yveltal is looking damn awesome

  • s07195

    The names actually sound cool!

  • The 1st thing I notice abt Xerneas is its legs lol.

  • Elvick

I miss names that I could easily pronounce and remember.

Love the legendary’s designs though. Didn’t care for the last two generations of legendaries.

  • neetyneety

I can’t wait for the inevitable gloriously-awesome D-Arts figures. My fingers will be trembling as I pose them in majestic and noble poses.

  • Declan Rodgers

    I think I’ll be getting Pokemon Y. I don’t like the look of DEER-alga.

  • Renaldi Saputra

personally, I like Yveltal more.. tired of deer-looking one..
we already had Virizion and Dialga

  • Xerneas looks a lot like the forest spirit from princess mononoke!
