Laharl Commands A PS3 Re-release For Disgaea: Hour Of Darkness

By Spencer . January 14, 2013 . 12:03am

On Tuesday, you can make Mid-Boss feel the wrath of Laharl and raise an army of Prinnies on PlayStation 3. Atlus will re-release the game that started the Disgaea series, Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, as a PlayStation Network download.

Following Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, NIS America will re-release Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories on PlayStation Network. Adell, Rozalin, and Tink are coming to PS3 as a PS2 Classic on January 22.

I’ve got one of those PS3 memory card readers (for PS1 and PS2), but haven’t really messed with it. Can you in theory use it to make your old PS2 save file work with the PSN download version?

    • I doubt it, since the games have been tweaked in order to work on all PS3’s (even those without BC). I’m sure you’ll find a more in-depth answer on Sony’s forums though

    • Nemesis_Dawn

No, unfortunately, you can’t. PS2 Classics use their own PS3-only type saves, rather than the old school PS2 saves, like PS1 classics use. Don’t understand why, being the PS3 is still capable of making virtual PS2 memory cards.

      • Elvick

        That’s a shame.

      • Dyne

I think that still in there for any one with a old ps3 that can ps2’s cd’s.

    • The interesting thing with that is I’ve made it to where I’ve taken PS2 memory card data, shifted it over to PS3 format, and then changed it around to be readable for the PC via PCSX2. This was to get my save data from the PS2 over the PC to play the rest of Ar tonelico II. You probably have an idea as to why I’d do that (I patched the DVD because of certain problems NIS gave it in America and wanted to finish it clean).

I can’t imagine there isn’t some sort of way to make the data PS3-ready but I haven’t really researched it. There must be some sort of way to patch the data to do exactly what you want but it’s been ages since I’ve looked. It’s not a clean process of just converting it once, I’m sure, but I’m sure someone has a method out there if you can make it go from the PS2 to PS3 to PC.

      • Xerain

I’m familiar with what you speak, as I myself loaded my JP AT 2 save up on my PC and converted it to a US save and transferred it back to my PS2.

I kind of assumed the answered was no, but I was hoping someone from NISA would see my post and state otherwise, thus revealing some hitherto unrevealed feature. If the PS3 game has such a feature, I’d buy it. Otherwise might as well stick to my PS2 copy.

  • It would be nice if they gave it some of the additions from the PSP/DS versions. Even just widescreen support would be appreciated.

    • Jordan Ortiz

Yeah would be better if it was afternoon of darkness.

  • Docer

    What with European release?

  • NekoDraga

Time for the return of CAPTAIN GORDON, DEFENDER OF EARTH!

  • Shiro

i wish it was the Black Labeled version with the Tsunami Bomb song when you fight Maderas.

    • Kitestwinblades

Say it ain’t so! They took that out?
Did they do the same to Etna’s original voice actor too? Is it just like Afternoon of Darkness almost entirely(except for the extras)? :<

I may need to put my PS2 copy in a safe. The game is still good but i really like those two things about the original. That and the music on the first level of hoggmeiser's castle(One with the stars)! xD

      • NekoDraga

The non-Black Label’d version still has Etna’s original VA, so don’t get rid of it!

        • Kitestwinblades

          YES! Excellent news X3

          • NekoDraga

Yeah. Whilst I do prefer her current VA, Amanda Winn Lee still did a great job as original Etna,

    • Taking that song out of the game was the worst thing they ever did to the Disgaea series. <3 Tsunami Bomb/Emily Whitehurst forever

  • DesmaX

Disgaea 2 PSN announcement made me want to my P3 FES I Brough a long time ago.

And, hey, now that I turned off widescreen mode and that graphic filter, it doesn’t look that bad.

But I don’t really want to play the classic Disgaea games (I’d much rather play Disgaea 4), but I would buy these, just to give my support

  • Alane Felix

Oh, good. They’re bringing the first Disgaea out the week before Disgaea 2 does. I hate it when the sequel comes out before the original on PSN, like with the Neptunia games.

  • I’ll probably pick this up in support of NISA, but god, Disgaea 1 is so dated after you play 4, 3, or even 2. It’s a great game, yes! Very excellent, love Laharl, Etna, and Flonne, and I can’t wait for DD2!

But I tried to play it on the PSP after playing 2 (having played 1 first on the DS), and it was actually a bit painful. I’m somewhat glad that innocent glitch existed cause I probably wouldn’t have wanted to play it long enough through to beat it again.

  • So, is this in the form of a PS2 classic, or is it just a PSN game?

  • TheSwordUser

Wished it was a remake with Disgaea 4 engine instead.
Or at least make it more playable by adding animation skipping option from PSP version (no, I don’t imply it’s unplayable without this option, it’s just bloody annoying to grind post-game).

  • Barrylocke89

It’s worth noting that the Atlus version of Disgaea 1 has a different English voice crew from the PSP version, so while the game doesn’t have as much stuff content wise, it’d still be a different experience (for people that play with the English Voice Acting at least, I think the Japanese team is the same voices)
