Nintendo Bringing EarthBound To Japan In March, Game Will Be 30 Yen

By Spencer . January 23, 2013 . 12:08pm

imageNintendo announced a slightly different Virtual Console line up for the Famicom’s 30th anniversary. Instead of Punch Out! Featuring Mr. Dream, Japan will get Mother 2: Gyiyg’s Counterattack better known as EarthBound in the West. The Super Famicom game will cost 30 yen. Perhaps, this is the news Shigesato Itoi was teasing.

Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem will be available in February for just 30 yen too. North America will get F-Zero instead.

Here’s Japan’s list of 30th Anniversary Famicom games:

  • January – Balloon Fight
  • February – Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem
  • March – EarthBound
  • April – Kirby’s Adventure
  • May – Super Metroid
  • June – Yoshi
  • July – Donkey Kong

      That speaks volumes.

    • kupomogli

“North America will get F-Zero instead.”

That sentence is all kinds of disappointment.

      • Showmeyomoves

        You take that back!

        • like Peggy explained I am alarmed that a single mom can profit $5548 in a few weeks on the inetwork.

      • $36598391

yea that is disappointing that Nintendo of America won’t give NA what Japan is getting

      • Krisi92

F-Zero is pretty awesome. It’s no Fire Emblem, though….

    • Chim_era

Cross out Japan and fill in europe and I really would be the happiest girl in the world …

    • Cameron Ward

      i want this game……

    • I love how this article is titled after a single bullet point naming a game that I’m sure Japanese people don’t care for nearly as much as the rest of the planet. It speaks volumes about the priorities of English gamers, this site, and possibly other groups who I’m not even aware of yet.

      • Hujiko

Actually, back in January of last year, in a poll of Famitsu’s readers Mother 2 was voted as the 5th best Nintendo published game of all time, just behind 2 Zeldas and 2 Marios.

        • Sure, but are there multiple enormous fan forums and general lunacy over a single RPG that didn’t sell well in its own time over in Japan?

          • puchinri

I think you also have to consider how much more limited computer/internet use is there and how we use it versus how they do (we have fanforums of a lot more things than they do and in greater portions, no matter the scale of who enjoys it more). Also, most JP fans show their love of a series through other ways, right? (Arts, crafts, etc.)

In retrospect, would Mother2/Earthbound make it that high in a poll here compared to where it did in Japan?

            • Suicunesol

Why would computer/internet use be limited in Japan of all places?

            • Locklear93

I actually don’t know the whys, but it’s not uncommon for PC familiarity to be relatively minimal over there, from everything I’ve read. They were big on smartphones before we were, but stationary PCs get used less.

            • puchinri

What Locklear93 said. It’s not that it is actually limited, just that they don’t use computers and internet as much over there.

Where an average family here probably has a computer, and usually internet, and it gets used with frequency, Japanese families may have a computer but it won’t get used as frequently. That’s what I’ve observed, noticed and heard. I mean, even at the school, no one was using the computers besides me and another American student, but here, everyone uses the computers during lunch/break, right?

            • William Mather

“Also, most JP fans show their love of a series through other ways, right?”

Haha, yeah, like going out and buying the games. :)

    • Mayjay

      Kinda feels like this.

      • FFmax

        Lol, yup.

    • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Earthbound is the same game as Mother 2? Where does Metroid Mother M fit into this timeline?

      • Farid Belkacemi

Before Zero and after Mother 3 at the same time :D

      • Metroid Mother M….

LOL.. c wat ya done thar! :D

      • Guest

Earthbound and Metroid are two separate game series

    • Jordan Ortiz

All I noticed was Super Metroid – May, please come to the U.S.

      • Farid Belkacemi

Same here :) If only Mother 2 was part of the offer…

    • Junko Enoshima

Of course, only on the Wii U in Japan….

    • Farid Belkacemi

Noooooooooooooooooooooooo… What about Europe ? I wanna play Mother too :(

      • Testsubject909

What about the rest of the world is more accurate.

        • Sean ‘Geg’ Reddie

I think he was referring to the fact Europe never got even Earthbound.

          • Farid Belkacemi

            Indeed :(

    • Brandonmkii

Why no Mother 1? Or is that already available on the eshop

      • WarioFan63

This release of Mother 2 is the first time Nintendo has released any of the Mother games digitally so I suppose they’re skipping Mother 1 for the time being

    • Shane Guidaboni

This needs to be on the 3DS and available in N.America. I want portable Earthbound! Why is it so hard to make this happen?

      • kmantle

There’s A LOT of copyright issues, actually.
Let me find the article, and I’ll post it

        • puchinri

I think it’s easy for a lot of us to overlook some of the interesting but obvious references in Mother2/Earthbound. Having only played the JP version, I don’t know if they were edited out of our version though, and whether they were or weren’t, how that changes things now versus when it was released here originally.

    • AlexanderPappas

good thing I still have earthbound for super Nintendo and it works great, but if I had it for virtual console on a 3DS now that would make my day.

    • Yuriangels

by the way, how are the earthbound games? are they fun? I all was wonder how good there are!?!

      • Rogerrmark

Unlike most RPGs,the setting consists most of 80/90’s suburbs, villages, shoppings and etc.

The gameplay is similar to Dragon Quest, but, like Dragon Quest IX,you can actually see the monsters in the field, and by touching them, the battle starts(first person). On Mother 2 and 3 at least, the first has random encounters.

The story is pretty bizarre, there are a great number of references for 80/90’s culture, the Beatles, some movies, etc.
        They are really fun :x

        • Yuriangels

          thax hugs

      • Testsubject909

There’s a rather spoilerless review out there that also doubles as a short documentary about Earthbound.

        Just Youtube: HVGN Earthbound

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

    • Aoshi00

Are these for the e-shop for 3DS or Wii U? Would love to get Fire Emblem and Earthbound for 30 yen.. that’s less than a buck when you buy online..

    • We_Were_There

Is it just me or is that price ludicrously cheap?

I’m hoping for Nintendo to eventually announce a 3DS e-shop.

    • CirnoLakes

      30 Yen?

Do you realize how much people pay for a copy of the game in the West?

      • Krisi92

The Japanese version isn’t at all that expensive, though.

    • Sean ‘Geg’ Reddie

To be honest, it’s a good sign that Mother 2 is being released first. Think about it for a sec, they’ve only confirmed the special 30 cent games for the time being, and why did they choose Mother 2 over Mother 1? Wishful thinking but logically points towards Earthbounds existence. Itoi has talked about the English fans a lot lately as he’s starting to realize we are here and we want Mother!
