Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem Is Co-Developed By Nintendo And Atlus

By Spencer . January 24, 2013 . 2:05am

imageAtlus’ parent company Index had a little more information about Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem, which was announced yesterday during Nintendo Direct. Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem is a joint development project with Index and Nintendo working on the game. Index says Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem will be their first co-developed title.

Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem is confirmed by Index to be a RPG, you know just in case you were expecting a fighting game or a card battling title.

This is the best and most random announcement of the week! I hope there won’t be any Persona in it, that needs a little break.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

Yu want whats best for the game

      • Richard N

If you’re a Fan of the series you gotta Chair-ish whatever they give Yu. Though I do admit that the amount of exposure of Persona is getting a bit unBearable. but I think we can can all get a Kick out of some Persona kids in the fray, or atleast a little cameo….

        ….. Naoto’s Hat….

        • ShawnOtakuSomething

hahaha indeed. I can’t bearly wait for more info about the game. I’m about to go bearlistic over this hype

        • Hound

I want me some Devil Children (Demi-kids) in there. Kids being part demon on a quest to survive hell from hunting them down in a strategy rpg game? Yes, sir.
Oh wait. That was Devil Survivor wasn’t it? Looks like Fire Emblem x SMT wasn’t too surprising after all, lol.

    • Persona is still part of the Megami Tensei series, even if it’s just a spinoff. Stop hating, it’s useless. For what it’s worth, the trailer only showed a bunch of SMT mainline characters (even the useless If… characters, who would’ve thought). I wonder where are the Demonica users…

      • Pyrofrost

Persona is not Megami Tensei or Shin Megami Tensei. It started as Megami Ibunroku and became a stand-alone brand. While the general public refers to Persona as Megami Tensei or SMT, because of similarities, it is still a completely separate brand.
Even Megami Tensei and Shin Megami Tensei are separate brands.

        • revenent hell

Yes but in the USA they are technically all under the same label of SMT. Even if you are right so is Turner.

I think they made everything SMT to help sell the brand? Im realy not sure why,I cant remember,But boy when I went hunting the other games did I get an overabundance of learning in about them.
I kind of wish they had kept the labeling as they where.

Edit: Im not trying to be nit-picky or anything but I think sometimes people forget arround the world not everything is labeled as the orriginal so taking that in to consideration can be half the battle sometimes.

          • Pyrofrost

Well I wasn’t out to tell off Turner or anything. Just providing correction and sharing knowledge. I wasn’t an ass about it like so many people can be on the internet.

And you are correct, for example SMT was stamped on Persona, DDS, and DS purely for marketing and familiarity purposes in the West. Though Persona can stand on its own two feet in the West now, so P4A and P4G actually aren’t wearing the SMT brand for support.

I’m 100% sure that nothing Persona related will appear in this game.

          • Digoth

are you sleeping with a dev or something?

          • Pyrofrost

            Yeah, what of it?

          • Sakurazaki

Yeah, it can go either way, I suppose. In Japan, Persona isn’t part of SMT, while it is here in NA. I want to say that they’ll stick to their Japanese guns a lot more, but I also see that Persona will probably rake in all teh munny.

You would think that they would show at least one of the few Persona protags, but they didn’t, which makes me even more convinced that there won’t be any P-characters.

Still, you never know. DS and DDS (among others) weren’t shown either, iirc.

        • Aisha Lee

I personally feel that Persona (along with other series like Devil Summoner and Devil Survivor) are all still connect together along with SMT in a sense that no matter how the series are different from one another (in terms of gameplay and story) expect to see spells like megidoloan or demons like jack frost in either of the series you play but thats my view on it. As for this crossover I’m interest to see how the gameplay is like (I’m gonna go with the tatical style of FE and the spells and demons of SMT which sounds pretty awesome.

          • Wait what

Persona, Devil Summoner, and all those spin-offs are obviously part of the same franchise. The people who go on about how they aren’t part of “Shin Megami Tensei” are just kidding themselves over semantics. No, they don’t have the “Shin Megami Tensei” name in Japan, because they don’t need to as “SMT” in Japan refers to one branch of the franchise, while in America they use it to refer to the franchise overall. They are still all part of the same franchise though even in Japan, and Japanese websites and interviews make this OBVIOUS. So do the games themselves. Devil Summoner Raidou specifically alludes to the events of Shin Megami Tensei II taking place in an alternative universe, and SMT If is directly connected to Persona. It’s all one big franchise.

          • Exactly what I was trying to tell up there. If we go by that logic, what is Jack Bros. anyway? Since it’s not labeled SMT, it’s not an SMT game? That’s like saying Tails’ Adventure is not a Sonic franchise game…

      • No Persona characters were shown in the trailer, while what seems like a huge ton of Fire Emblem characters across the series were shown. It kind of suggests they are keeping away from Persona for this one.

        • Hound

Could mean the typical “End of the World, Fight your way toward becoming the World’s Messiah” story-line premise + Fire Emblem characters stuck between the mess to push the plot.

        • LibraryOfAlexandira .

Tamaki shown up in the trailer. She’s technically a Persona character also as the protagonist of Shin Megami Tensei If. Tamaki was in the first Persona game and the both games in the Persona 2 duology despite not being a Persona user.

    • psssssh, ill take every persona character they have!

    • Pyrofrost

You have nothing to worry about then, Shin Megami Tensei ≠ Persona.

    • Alberto Maytorena

Nah, judgjng by the trailer I think they’ll stick with the original series this time, even though the lack of Strange Journey disturbs me. As much as I love Persona, I wouldn’t want to see them in this game.

  • AnimusVox

Hitoshura better be in this >:L

    • Ninten

We can safely assume he will be there, judging from the trailer.

    • Isaac Newton

Mara MUST better be in this!

  • Alexander Aubert

a RPG??? definitly buying a wiiu

    • Syn

This and every other article concerning the Wii U have me scrambling and recalculating my later year purchases dude, the line up is simply too amazing to pass up, screw fanboyism, am ready to play some awesome games……………and be terribly broke too

  • Curan_Altea

I have no idea what this game will be like, but I’m very excited for it. Fire Emblem is my favorite game series, and SMT is definitely up there. The permadeath of Fire Emblem goes nicely with SMT games’ dark tone.

  • Mr_SP

    …RPG, or TRPG?

  • Julien_N

    “card battling title”

Ha-ha, oh gosh I can’t imagine the disappointement if it had been the case! XD

An RPG with those two universes sounds interesting, but SMT games are set in modern Japan and Fire Emblem titles in a medieval-fantasy world. I am curious to see how Atlus and Nintendo will mix those two worlds.
Judging by the trailer, this crossover will also feature characters from games that were not released in NA/EU/AU, such as SMT 1/2 or If…, just like Marth and Roy in SSBM.

    • Isaac Todd

At least it’s not going to be another mobile game by GREE :P

    • SetzerGabbiani

This partnership might turn into us receiving the games you mentioned as remakes or translations. That would be a potential benefit of this partnership.

      • Julien_N

        Indeed, that could be cool!
A crossover that raises awareness for the first games then a remake of those older SMT games. Sounds great, even if I don’t get my hopes too high. ^.^

      • Hound

Ooo, Remake of Devil Children Red, Black, Light, Dark, Fire, Ice, and Messiah Riser with online multiplayer and a Remake of the Majin Tensei series + Ronde. Then a SMT collection (Kyuuyaku, SMT 1, 2, 3 featuring Raidou, If…), FE collection, and SMT Last Bible Collection (3DS) if SMT x FE emblem caught on.

With the amount of time they put into their remakes though, I don’t think Atlus would manage.Would be amazing though.

    • Miralizmis

I think I would have died if it was. XD

  • chroma816

An RPG? I almost didn’t expect it, all sarcasm aside.

  • Pockystix

instant death and permadeath in one game

it will be the most hardcore thing ever lol

    • ATLUS hard meets Nintendo hard. Hooo boyyyyy ^.^;

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        we are doomed!

    • Pyrotek85

Oh god don’t even give them ideas lol

    • RoxasTheUnknown1

      WANT!! xD

    • Sweet so I can have my Mudo and Hama! Can I haz Megidolaon too!

      • Hound

i can haz Demi-fiend boss with Gaia Rage in Fire Emblem?
        Demi-fiend boss + Perma Death @[email protected]

    • Calintz YT

Go hard or go home, dawg.

  • There are 5 universes from SMT (I, II, if, Nocturne, IV) and five from FE(Sacred Stones, Shadow Dragon, Awakening, (Roy and Lyn 2 games), (Ike and Soothe games). :C Maybe there will be 5 things like chapter which with one universe each from the two series :C

    • Suicunesol

Well, there’s technically 6 FE universes if you include Jugdral from IV and V. But it seems it’s being ignored… :(

      • puchinri

I suppose Strange Journey could also fit somewhere in the SMT list aside from any of those? So that works in the end, doesn’t it?

      • From the characters appearing in the promo there are only 5 universes from each series :C But you can count if as being in the same universe of SMT I, and II being a sequel to SMT I.

  • Junko Enoshima

What kind of rpg will it be? Turn based, tactical, or even action?

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Just an RPG? aww I wanted Chrom to use demons in his army

  • Alex

Most anticipated game ever for me

  • Xmas Lopez

Read this first thing in the morning and promptly woke everyone up with my girlish squealing

  • RPG nice and vague. There are several genre of RPG games which will it be?

  • KingGunblader

The thought that it might be a fighting game had crossed my mind, but I wasn’t worried about a card battler given it’s for Wii U.

  • yoUNg_grOUp568

    You had me at RPG.

  • Oltheros

Hopefully dual audio in Awakening is a sign of things to come, even if this is a crossover

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Due to the fact that this cross-over, i had more believe that this game is going Japan dub only after all, the cost for each character voice will be crazy here.

  • Masa

this coming out for both Europe and America?
Nintendo don’t have a good track record when it comes to releasing rpgs.

    • lordroto

I don’t think it would have been on the american and europe nintendo direct then would it?

  • Very Excited for this, the Wii U is already looking very strong. I just wonder with so many announcements already at the beginning of the year, and more to surely come between now and E3 what exactly does Nintendo have in store for E3? There was a lot of disappointment over the lack of many new reveals at E3 with many companies choosing to announce things earlier. Is this a sign that industry giants, or Nintendo in particular (in this case) see Expos as no longer relevant as compared to a more direct way of communicating with fans at it’s own pace?

    • puchinri

I think Nintendo has utilized this pretty well actually. They can use the NDs to communicate with everyone a lot directly (obviously), but the Expo is a good time to really show off the power of those announced titles, or reveal more titles (they can show off gameplay, videos, etc).

I guess you could say, the Directs are also for the gamers/fans, while the expos are for the media side more? In the end, there’s crossover obviously, but I think it helps balance how they present things to everyone.

  • riceisnice

Doesn’t this match up seem a little odd? For one thing, The Shin Megami Tensei series is rated R while Fire Emblem is usually rated E-T. Which direction are they going to go? Are they going to soften up SMT’s mature themes or are they gonna “maturify” Fire Emblem?

    • Nameless App 1989

      Jack Bros. Rated: E
      Revelations: Persona: Rated E
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment: Rated T
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona Portable: Rated T
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2 Portable Innocent Sin: Rated T
      P4 Arena: Rated T
Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers: Rating Pending, but probably Teen.

      • Isaac Newton

        You forgot:

SMT 1 F***ed Both Heaven and Hell for teens…

SMT 2 you kick YHVH’s aim at teens…

SMT 3: Nocture Become Lucifer’s General and Kick YHVH’s ass again VERY TEEN INDEED

SMT x Fire Emblem character are all on the main Series except for Strange Journey(Some Idiots on the net still called it SMT 4

        • Marcelo Gouvea

To be fair to Strange Journey, one of the producers (can’t remember the name right now) said it was “SMT 4 in all but name”, or something along those lines.

That was way before the actual SMT4 was announced, of course.

(and since this is a very ratings-heavy topic, SMT 1 (GBA) is rated 12+ in Japan. Not sure about SMT2 and 3, though).

          • M’iau M’iaut

There were plenty of folks beyond some ‘idiots on the net’ who made such comparisons. You had the comments by the team themselves as you noted and the marketing very much made it part of the Nocturne bloodline and not Persona.

      • riceisnice

Maybe ratings wasn’t the right way to go. But the mature things are definitely more prevalent in the SMT franchise. Especially the fact that there’s no actual “Justice” compared to Fire Emblem. The closest thing SMT has to a good ending is usually the neutral ending and that’s really just a good ending for you while every else who doesn’t agree with your point of view suffers.

I’m just saying. I hope they don’t soften SMT’s views,

    • Nameless App 1989

      Oops, forgot:

Devil Survivor (includes Overclocked): Rated T
      Devil Survivor 2: Rated T
Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online: Rated T

    • Marcelo Gouvea

In Japan, the majority of the series is rated B (12+) at most. The only exceptions to that rule seem to be Digital Devil Saga, Strange Journey and Raidou Kuzunoha (rated C, 15+).

Okay, 5 “exceptions” is still a lot, but considering the number of games in that franchise, hardly qualifies as a majority.

    • Hinataharem

Mara is the reason for mature ratings

  • Nickie

Oh god yes. Yes! I was waiting to hear if it was an RPG or not! Curse you Nintendo now I have to get a Wii U. >.<

  • Zonic505

Okay, so….what KIND of RPG? SMT style RPG, or FE style SRPG? Really doesn’t answer a lot of questions.

    • Isaac Newton

I’m not bashin but I think SMT character are too powerful just sayin??(for the Fire Emblem fan don’t know SMT goto there wikia so you will know). So what will happen to the story maybe I think they will trim down the device or powers the SMT characters have just thinkin…

      • M’iau M’iaut

Name me a crossover where differences in ‘power levels’ don’t exist. It’s just dealt with as part of the game and shouldn’t impact the fun level much at all.

        • Uh you guys do know FE characters really mess things up right? Lets not forget the Manaketes and the mages and what Marth can do with Falchion

      • Tom_Phoenix

Why is it that SMT fans keep assuming that FE characters are a bunch of weaklings who can’t stand up to the SMT ones? It’s not like the FE characters haven’t dealt with all-powerful entities in their own games.

        • ash32121

have a FE character deal with a multiversal demon, who fight lucifer then cause a multiversal reaction chain explosion ? or have FE character deal with a guy who can defeat god in the old testament ?

          • Tom_Phoenix

At least in some games, they HAVE fought gods or god-like entities.

    • GuyAlpha

It will probably be a mixture of both.

    • If I had to guess, I would say it’s going to be mix up of devil survivor and fire emblem. Both grid based for movement and using an actual attack sequence. Most of these cross over games tend to use an srpg style when moving across the map. Games like Super Robot Taisen. That’s what I’m hoping for at least. I would be totally fine if they made it a standard 3rd person turn based rpg though too. It is going to be on the Wii U, so there is potential for something really big and pretty. Regardless, it might be the first SMT (if you don’t count P4A or P4G) or Fire Emblem game to be released for an HD console.

Goddamn I’m excited, the rest of the year can go to shit and I wouldn’t be phased in the least.

  • baha

“Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem is confirmed by Index to be a RPG, you know just in case you were expecting a fighting game or a card battling title.”

Square ruined our expectations on everything… T-T

    • I know seriously we’re like battered housewives over here.

  • Wackoramaco87

A part of me really hoped it was going to be a fighting game and/or card game, and I could justify not getting a WiiU for a while- but ngggggh, an RPG developed by two great companies with two great franchises… Welp, there goes my money~!

  • Blur Will

    Hope it’s True!!!

  • Brimfyre

Does this mean Fire Emblem is part of the Amala Network?

  • Aw Heng Wang Travis

Can’t wait for the awesome music that will be in the game as well.

  • Spirit Macardi

Seriously Nintendo, keep up these wacky crossovers! First it was Pokemon and Nobunaga’s Ambition, now it’s Fire Emblem and SMT, next thing you know it’ll be Kirby and Monster Hunter or Mario and Guilty Gear.

This is making other crossover concepts look downright boring by comparison x3

    • J_Joestar

Pocket Monster Hunter! Do it Nintendo+Capcom!

      • puchinri

There’s some really great PKMNxMonHun art, so that’d be really cool!

  • zferolie

“Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem is confirmed by Index to be a RPG, you know just in case you were expecting a fighting game or a card battling title.”

    Oh thank god.

    • JustThisOne

Though, I would’ve been kinda curious about how it would’ve turned out as a fighting game, haha.

  • TruSpindash

I looking forward to the fact that not only will we being seeing SMT and FE characters interacting, but also seeing them interact with characters in their own series they have never meet. Also this game is going to to be the first time that we see both SMT and FE in HD, seriously can not be less excited to see what the game looks like.

    • Hound

Even though IV hasn’t come out yet, I’d be psyched to see SMT III or IV environments in HD. Any of the cities or the Labyrinth of Amala optimized for next gen.. And the possibility of HD polygon Models of monsters from the SMT universe.. I can’t contain my excitement.

Add Fire Emblem characters into it at full HD.. It’s an amazing premise. If the graphics are hype, that alone could sell this game like crazy.

  • SetzerGabbiani

I wouldn’t be surprised if Hitoshura and the Amala network took center stage in this game. Marth would probably be the main character for the Fire Emblem side of things. Also, seeing as part of SMT IV takes place in a medieval time similar to the FE games, It wouldn’t be unexpected if all the chaos started there.

I am a bit surprised that the protagonist from Strange Journey isn’t included since the guy from SMT If… is there.

    • I think Strange Journey MC will definitely be there, or at least someone in a Demonica. It’s going to be interesting to see what kind of personalities they create all these silent protagonists.

    • sakahagi

Main character of SMT: If is girl. This guy is her non canonical alter ego because in this game you could choose gender of protagonist like in P3 Portable.

  • This really begs to ask the question of when we might see this. At least
a year away right? While I wouldn’t mind seeing it before SMT IV, I
would definitely prefer to have some familiarity with the story and
characters of that title before hand. This also makes me suspicious of possible remakes for the original SMT games, I don’t think we ever got “if…” west side.

  • Tiramii

An RPG? OH YEAHHHHHH, so pumped up for this game. >D

  • It will be a RPG…a Strategy RPG, right? Or a regular RPG?

I have a hard time believing any game franchise crossing over with Fire Emblem would turn out to be anything other than a Strategy RPG :P

    • KingGunblader

Not to mention that most SMT games are strategy (main series and Persona notwithstanding), so I think it’s a safe bet that it will be some kind of SRPG.

      • Hound

I only recall Majin Tensei 1-2, Ronde, and Devil Survivor 1, 1.1, and 2.
(The Megami Tensei RPG universe is HUGE and goes back to the NES)

Devil Survivor 2 anime is coming soon by the way. So there’s pretty good odds that they’ll make a SRPG.
(And an Expanded 3DS version of Devil Survivor 2..)

    • JustThisOne

Although wouldn’t it be awesome to see FE characters outside their turn phases? :3

  • OverlordZetta

Man, Nintendo is doing al ot of crossover lately. Wonder if Nintendo’s trying to make this the norm?

  • Alicemagic

    Thou art I, and I am thou…

You relationship with Nintendo has grown deeper.

Thou shalt be blessed when creating games for the Wii U system.

  • revenent hell

I dont typically play to many crossover type games…..I have to say this one, I’ll buy it.Yup.

  • Scallion

An SMT crossover would be awesome, but this doesn’t particularly excite me. Every crossover series is a nonsensical cash-grab, but I can’t imagine this one being any fun.

    • raymk

No every cross-over is not a nonsensical cash grab. The marvel vs series was nonsensical only because that’s the way it was supposed to be. However it wasn’t a cash grab because the games were fun and were actual viable fighters. A cash grab would be something like an anime fighter with no work put into it.

  • I wonder what kind of RPG. RPG in itself is a very broad term.

  • Lazulis

my body is not and never will be ready. time to get a wiiU…

  • dahuuuundge

They should have new illustrations just for this game. It’ll be awkward to see characters with different artstyle on the same screen or cutscene.

    • puchinri

I don’t mind it in Unchained Blades or GyakutenxLayton as much as I thought I would, and I think as long as they unify the look of the colors somewhat (how some color styles are so vivid versus others looking more brush-y or something), that might help a lot.

  • Kitestwinblades

I would like to see Final Fantasy(or Golden Sun) X Fire Emblem personally
but this TOO GOOD to pass up xD I kinda relate all of SMT’s stuff to be futuristic though. FF is like that too but it still fits the fantasy setting. Makes me wonder how they’re gonna pull this off. But I’m definitely excited!

BlackBeWhiteDX’s comment about permadeath makes me wonder how far they could take it if they carry that over XD If anything nothing brings back memories of cutting the game off and restarting like a no-death-run on Fire Emblem :3

  • puchinri

So, was if. . . ever localized at all? If not, what are the chances of us seeing it in some VC form? I’m just wondering how casually those characters will be handled in the localized version if they never saw an official release here (not that it should technically make a difference).

    • Nemesis_Dawn

The first localized SMT title was Nocturne on PS2, which is SMT III. While there were some Persona titles on the PS1, none of the mainline SMT titles came to the West before Nocturne.

      • puchinri

Ahh. Okay. I didn’t realize that Nocturne was our first SMT title.

  • Fidelis

    ..I just dont understand this

    I mean, I’d love a Disgaea X SMT
Because both are my favorite franchises
And it’d make perfect sense since Disgaea stars demons and demon summoning is a major facet of the SMT universe
And it’d be fun to see the relatively serious nature of SMT combine with the comedic nature of disgaea

And Atlus has had some experience wih Disgaea
And it’s what I’ve been hoping for for years

Oh well, I’m digressing from this article too much, The world already has enough Disgaea for 2013
This just worries me a bit..For some reason I feel this game’s existence lowers the chances of my dream game ever coming out

    • Nemesis_Dawn

That’d be actually pretty cool. Thinking about it, a SMT X Disgaea would make sense to be a Sony exclusive and this obviously will only be a Nintendo exclusive. Atlus would get a ridiculous amount of exposure from doing that across systems.

      • Hound

Disgaea x Pokemon x Digimon x Monster Rancher x Monster Hunter x SMT @[email protected] … (featuring Dante from Devil May Cry)

  • Sam Park

Oh god Fire Emblem is infamous for its Perma-Death which makes the game very hard and Atlus is infamous for its Instant Deaths which makes the game very hard, two nintendo hard games joining together… (May GOD help us)

    • Hound

If it’s anything like the other SMT games. You’re going to have to be your own Messiah in the mess of death.

  • IshimaruKaito

idk seems weird but……cool at the same time…i just didn’t expect these to series’ to clash like this

  • ragingmerifes

    Project X Zone HD

  • Maggie Thelen

I don’t know about you….but since their working with Nintendo…I’m hoping for a SMT/Persona meets Pokemon! 8D XD Heck, I’d even love for them to do a SMT/Persona meets Kingdom Hearts! 8D

  • I still… can’t wrap my head around it O_ O every time I see or think about it it blows my mind.

  • Göran Isacson

I have no idea how this will work and what it will be all about, but I must admit that seeing SMT Order vs Chaos philosophy played out against FE’s stories about politics and nations fighting nations, more than big world-ending monsters having to be vanquished by a select group of heroes is… going to be interesting, at the very least.

Also, good on Nintendo for feeding my cross-over addiction. I craves them. CRAVES THEM.

  • Nitraion

    Wow SMT crossover…O_o
sadly i don’t know fire emblem series at all..
Will it be dreaming to see SMT x Tales someday? lol..

    • Fire Emblem is a epic strategy game, somewhat like Ogre Battle.

  • Tails the Foxhound

Guys I just thought about something? What if this gives a SMT character in Smash?

  • Bah, don’t like the idea of my favorite developer collaborating with my least favorite one. Feels like Atlus is lowering themselves big time just for popularity to me.
