Muramasa Rebirth For Vita Will Have A Completely New English Localization

By Ishaan . January 29, 2013 . 12:00pm

UPDATE: The game will feature a separate “jump” button, unlike the Wii version, which used “up” on the D-Pad or analog stick for jumping.

Following our reveal earlier today, Aksys have officially announced the PlayStation Vita version of Muramasa: The Demon Blade for a U.S. release. In North America, the game will be titled Muramasa Rebirth.

The original version of Muramasa on Wii was published by Ignition Entertainment and was somewhat lacking in its bland localization. Muramasa Rebirth, on the other hand, is getting a completely new localization from Aksys.

Additionally, Aksys have also confirmed that the previously reported paid DLC, which will allow you to play four additional short scenarios with four new characters, will be made available for purchase in North America.

Aksys haven’t announced a release date for Muramasa Rebirth yet.

A more competent localization for this game is more than welcome! Ignition’s translation was… adequate at best.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

The good news just keeps on coming!

  • Nice. A shame how many games were butchered by Ignition. This is definitely worth a double dip. Not that I’m getting a Vita anytime soon but down the road for sure.

  • This, at least, is excellent news. I can probably justify buying this game.

  • z_merquise

Yes! Thank you so much, Aksys!

  • Nann

I Need it with the strength of 108 Muramasa’s Blades!!!

  • PersonaBull

Today is a wonderful day! ~<3 My only remaining question (besides the obvious "When's the release date?") is "Will this have dual-audio?" Moreso out of curiosity than anything else, though, since I'll be importing to start.

    • Well unless something’s changed, there’s only ever been a Japanese track.

      • PersonaBull

“Completely new localization” kinda throws that out the window, though. It’s a multilayered question, I suppose. “Will this game have english audio, and will it ONLY have english audio if so?” Would be a better wording. I’m not expecting it to have anything but the Japanese audio track.

        • Color me cynical (it is a rather nice shade of Sky Blue), but I don’t think they’ll be spending more money on this than they have to and the good little rumors say that VO is the most expensive part of any game.

      • MrTyrant

Aksys leave the japanese dubs most of the time.

  • Dammit stop making me want this game.

  • I’m not sure why Ignition’s localization gets so much hate. I think it suited the game’s theme well enough.

    • SirTeffy

Because a lot of the time it was flat wrong? The dialogue made voiced references to characters never named in the translation, lots of occasions where the voice acting was a single word but the “translation” was a full sentence, and other egregious errors that made the subplots entirely gibberish?

    • Your opinion is rooted in ignorance. That in itself is not necessarily a bad thing, but it can become one if you do not make a good faith effort to educate yourself. Ignition’s localization was filled with mistranslations, oversimplifications, and many errors of many other varieties. It was objectively bad by every metric.

    • Juuu

Ironically, it was quite the opposite! Opinions of bilingual players/importers were that the game was actually quite flowery with a lot of prose and such, whereas the English translation was stiff, bland, and lacked personality [in addition to some blatant mistranslations]. Aksys handles a LOT of VN style games with a LOT of prose, so I think they’ll capture the theme much better. o:

  • Farid Belkacemi

Ignition’s translation was THAT bad ? Didn’t play the game yet (even if I have a sealed PAL version :p ).

    • Ereek

      Yes, yes it was.

    • psycho_bandaid

bland is correct. Not particularly offensive, but it was pretty mechanical. I know some folks are purists but there needs to be some personality in the writing.

      • Hetare Kaiser

Blandness wasn’t the only problem. A lot of spoken dialog was skipped over because every dialog “chunk” needed to fit on two lines, which is a lot easier for Japanese than it is for English.

In other words, you could hear the characters say a lot more (in Japanese) than was actually written on the screen (in English).

  • Laith Rem

Oh man if you announce an English Dub I may have to kiss you Aksys.

  • Definitely picking this up no matter what!

  • Letiumtide

Mmm, perhaps we can get an Arc Rise Fantasia vita rerelease wherein Aksys retranslates that.

Ignition should have all of it’s sins fixed.

    • Hraesvelgr

And please get rid of that Jerry Seinfeld wannabe that did Niko’s voice. I played with the voices off, so I didn’t notice until I watched a video of it later… Laughable and pitiful at the same time.

    • Farid Belkacemi

      Do want ! :D

  • The original had one of the absolute worst localizations in the modern era. I may not be fluent in Japanese, but I knew enough that it drove me insane to listen to the Japanese dialog with English subtitles that almost never matched up.

  • Glad to see they are adding enough to make this a new experience.

  • Freud_Hater

Does that mean english voices? If so, sign me up!

  • someelfgirl

-insert upset remark about GKH localization here-
wonder why this one got such an easy pass.
    guess it’s cause it’s a port.
oh well, good for the people who want it.

  • This is great news thank you Aksys!

  • Andrew Arndt

what about a EU release T;T

    • Mar Mar

I don’t mind getting the NA one but I won’t be able to download NA DLCs because Vita locks you to 1 account.

      • Farid Belkacemi

One account per memory stick, right ? :p

        • Armane

One account per memory stick is one thing. Having to factory reset your Vita to switch account is another. It is basically one account per Vita AND you can’t play imports on your main account if they have any DLC you want to play.

  • Natat

Wow this is some hype news! As good as the game was, the localization was highly underwhelming. I can trust Atlus though, they know how to do great localizations.

    • Jake Joe

      Aksys ≠ Atlus

  • Please just retranslate the text and leave the game entirely undubbed, Aksys. It’s literally the most Japanese of all Japanese games. Dubbing it would only ruin the experience.

    • Kevadu

Pretty sure that’s exactly what they’re doing.

    • zindkeeper

You’re not a smart one, are you? Why would they dub it when it was never considered to begin with?

      • Thanks for commenting, but we really don’t appreciate you berating other commenters starting with “you’re not a smart one?”

        • zindkeeper

Some people need to learn to read the entire article before commenting and making senseless posts like that.

  • Aksys give yourselves a pat on the back. Another reason for me to get a Vita.

  • Go Aksys!
Now just bring over Fate/Extra CCC so I can throw even more money at you :)

    • gamefreak86

  • Alexander Aubert

my vita will be happy again

  • MewkaKazami

Any news of Europe? I don’t mind importing thank god the Vita is region free, but it probably cheaper to buy it here.

  • Zonic505

THANK YOU FOR THE JUMP BUTTON. Seriously, that was probably one of the only nitpicks I had with the original version. So glad this was addressed.

    • Sylveria

      Couldn’t agree more.

    • biskmater

I never had any problems with it, but It certainly couldn’t hurt.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

    +1 for Japanese dub/English text combo !!

    Actually, screw that, +100mil!!

  • Visa Vang

    See? They heard my prayers.

  • Neophoton

    I <3 Aksys.

  • DarthSithZero

Great I love the news related to Vita so much great games coming.
I’m glade they changed the jump button I didn’t like Jumping with Dpad up

  • BadenBadenPrinny

brb Break dancing on the roof

  • PersonaSpace

If we’re getting a new localization, I hope that we also get a new voice track to match it. I hope Aksys doesn’t just get lazy and leave Japanese only for voices.

  • Prinnydoom

Oh thank god it the vita isnt region locked hello muramasa you will never make it to english shores so i shall import thee ^__^

  • Aoshi00

Whoa, good news, didn’t know this would be coming. Just canceled my Jpn pre-order.. really shouldn’t have ordered it in the first place since I wouldn’t be able to access the Jpn DLCs..

I mostly played the Jpn ver on the Wii before, I only play a bit of the Ignition Eng ver, didn’t think the translation was that bad.. good it’s getting redone :) and I could buy the 4 new chapters.

  • Bloodios

As expected from one of my top three most favorite game publisher.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

I guess Muramasa The Demon Blade Rebirth would have been too long

    • Solomon_Kano

Not to mention unwieldy lol. That aside, I think it was a matter of being able to use that title since that was merely Ignition’s localized name. I don’t really know how that goes though.

  • Go2hell66

Well this is a pleasant suprise, guess i can rest easy now :D

  • Solomon_Kano

I hope it releases in the summer. Soul Sacrifice has got me for spring, but there’s nothing in sight for summer. Do it Aksys, do it!

  • ShindoW

    YES. YES!!! :D

  • RovCal

i know i should be thankful to God that we are getting the game.. But but…. PLZ MAKE A COLLECTORS EDITION ASWELL :$.

  • Göran Isacson

And now to wait and hope for a European release date… for one can at the very least hope for nice things.

  • Chao Wu

I actually prefer it without the jump button. It reminds me more Fighting game controls, and heck I even beat Shigurui mode with it.

  • heartless141

    greatest invention of mankind.
Jump button along with its brother : double jump

  • gamefreak86

Day one. Hope Dlc is priced reasonably.

  • Mazdian

Yay! Haha, Aksys to the rescue! More good news for a great day!

  • Lester Paredes

I have never been so pumped for the inclusion of a ‘jump’ button before.

  • XypherCode

I like the analog jump option more IMO. :)

  • Elvick

Woot. Still bummed that the new stuff is DLC, but I’ll overlook it to support Aksys being awesome.

  • So, does that means that Japanese VAs are gone? Well, they said localization, so I hope it only pertains to the text. Can’t wait, this will rock on Vita’s OLED!

  • XiaomuArisu

    Aksys to the rescue!
    Wonderfull news!

  • Yes! They’re keeping the Japanese voices! June replied to a fan’s question whether re-localization means English voices with

“Relocalization means the text will be relocalized (translated and edited) by our own staff.”

    on Aksys’ official page.

Ladies and Gents, we’re in for a gorgeous-looking ride on Vita. Thanks to Aksys and OLED technology =)

  • alixraen

This, along with P4G, are my Vita-sellers right here.

  • Yeah read about this on ANN, I didn’t know the Wii version of the translation was not quite good according to people from ANN who have played this game.

But then again, the same thing applied to western game when they get translated from English to Japanese (Modern Warfare 2, and Black Ops 2 MP):

  • miyamoto

    That is Killerrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

  • Istillduno

Eh, the Wii version’s localisation was fine.
