Is Bloodmasque The Name Of Square Enix’s Unreal Action RPG?

By Spencer . January 31, 2013 . 2:30pm

Back in 2011, Square Enix was hiring new staff for an action RPG designed with the Unreal Engine. Artwork for the unnamed game showed a masked person with a white owl standing in front of… something that looks like Dracula’s castle. This scene kind of reminds me of Castlevania.

Maybe Square Enix’s Unreal action RPG will be called Bloodmasque? Square Enix’s Japan division filed a trademark for Bloodmasque and registered a domain name for the title. Currently, the URL doesn’t go anywhere, but a domain name identifies this as one of Square Enix’s projects.

    looks interestingly weird.

  • Oh yeah! I forgot about that game? Who’s making it?

  • I am pretty sure that game was cancelled. Cant say anything square does excite me anymore anyway

    • Syltique

Based on what? There’s no reason to think it’s canceled.

      • Syn

I dont know, maybe based on the lack of no information whatsoever which seems to be SE’s strategy of killing projects they dont want, look at The last Remnant PS3)

  • Bloodios

Wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out to be another mobile game…

    • Brion Valkerion

      Pft, browser game~!

    • Shiki

      No , please!!

    • Syn

      I call IOS game

  • Not sure how I feel about this.

  • SirRichard

Kind of hope something comes of that artwork, if only because it might be a bit different than their usual output. And frankly, we could all do with a bit of faith restoring after All The Bravest.

    • Solomon_Kano

I hope so, too. I thought that art was pretty cool. Was this art ever confirmed to be from that action-RPG that DQIX’s director was working on? That showed up in a magazine once with some other shots, but I don’t know if this was supposed to be the same thing or if they were working on two ARPGs.

      • SirRichard

I don’t know if it was, they haven’t really said anything related to this art or the UE3 RPG since they first showed this off. For all we know they quietly cancelled it and this is something else, but who can say? There’s probably going to be a teaser site or something soon, if they’re moving on this.

        • Solomon_Kano

Ok, after doing some research, they’re the same game. Unless Squenix is cooking two Unreal ARPGs, that shot is indeed from Ryutaro Ichimura’s game. At the time that Ichimura’s game was shown off they said that they were still hiring and were targeting current gen, but that they could move to next gen hardware. Considering the game was never officially announced, I don’t think it got cancelled. It was just too soon for them to give us all that info. I really hope that this is that game.

  • A darker themed Action RPG would be pretty nice. Currently going through Shadow Hearts 1+2, so I’d definitely dig that.

  • ndjn3979

    I see the potential

  • Going in with low expectations. Would be glad if it is indeed the Action RPG that was mentioned a long time ago.

  • Solomon_Kano

I hope this is that ARPG. I really do. I haven’t really played any good ARPGs this gen, apart from Gravity Rush. So none on consoles. If this is that ARPG, I wonder when they’ll announce it? Interesting timing for filing the trademark giving the run up to next gen reveals, especially considering that Ryutaro Ichimura had said they’d consider putting it on next gen hardware. They were sure not to name a target platform, so it’s still possible.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

New kind of Dracula game would be nice here.^_^ As long as the Vampire is not glittering lol

  • Lord Grant me stren—whoops wrong game. Then again there might be some bats flying around in the background.

    • Riseabovethesky

Oh man… where is that quote from again? I remember it stuck in my head when I played that game.

      • Slightly misquoted, but it’s the title for the second stage path 1 of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood which I still consider one of the more difficult Castlevania games.

        • Riseabovethesky

Yeah, I saw that while searching on Google but it is not what I have in mind. What I am referring to is definitely uttered by a female character in a JRPG during a fight and it is ”Lord GIVE me strength”. I tried to find what I am looking for on YouTube but I had no luck this far :p

I thought I had a lead with Cloche from Ar Tonelico II but it seems I was wrong…

          • Oh cool, and I still need to play the Ar Tonelico games. Also sometimes when I even think about Castlevania now I think of this video.

          • Riseabovethesky

That must be the Extra Super Hard Mode!

I have mixed feelings with the Ar Tonelico series. Some very boring and recycled environments drained some of the fun for me but the catchy tunes and the way you gradually learn more about the Reyvateils (the spellcaster girls in your party) to a point they feel like real persons is really cool. The OSTs are good too, here is one of my favorite piece (even if it is only a town theme) :

These ones also stuck in my head for days after I heared them loop a few times : /

          • ROFL XDD

I can see that, I felt that way with a few games I’ve played over the years, also I though town music was suppose to calmer or more ominous than this. This sounds like you’re in an a sprawling city scape.
