Tales of Xillia 2 Crosses 500,000 In Japan

By Ishaan . February 5, 2013 . 10:30am

Namco Bandai reported their third-quarter (Oct. – Dec.) earnings today, and also provided updated sales figures for a few of their recent games in their report.

Here’s how they’ve fared, as of December 31st, 2012, with the figures in parenthesis meant to indicate how many copies Namco hope for certain games to move by March 31st, 2013:

(J/US/EU) Tekken Tag Tournament 21.35 milion (1.7 million)

(J/US/EU) Soulcalibur V870,000

(J/US/EU) Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations660,000

(J) Tales of Xillia 2500,000 (650,000)

(J) Run for Money Tousouchuu450,000 (300,000)

(J) Taiko Drum Master: The Little Dragon and the Mysterious Orb410,000

Hmm… Tales of Xillia 2 needs to sell another 150,000 copies by the end of March if it’s going to make that goal. Considering that we haven’t seen it in the top-20 sales chart for quite some time, that seems a little unlikely at this point.

They should be able to do that for all of those games.

  • Ladius

Considering the last Famitsu numbers we had saw Xillia 2 in the 410k range (with roughly 450k shipped copies), this update seems really positive. I imagine they won’t be able to meet that 650k figure by the end of March, but I think they could be able to reach it in terms of LTD sales.

We shouldn’t forget that 650k was a bold goal to begin with, considering Xillia sold 632k copies (going with the last Famitsu 2011 figure), or 750k according to a Namco Bandai report linked by Andriasang a year ago (even if that “Unit Sales” column could have meant shipped copies).

Stilli, Xillia 2 is a success on many levels: not only is it the second best selling Tales game in six years (after the first Xillia), but its sales show most of those who bought Xillia were pleased enough to give a chance to its sequel. Not so surprising, considering it seems to be even better than the first.

Damn it, Ishaan, couldn’t you have put a picture of xillia 2 instead of 1? You got me all excited…>_:l
And I was supposed to get fe13 yesterday, but the gs people were all like “oh no, that’s just the shipment date!” Trolls…
    Sorry if I sound whiney >_>;

Afaik, Namco didn’t directly hype any 4th February announcement, people just assumed it was something Xillia-related after reading a paragraph in a Crunchyroll article.

I’m sure we will have more info on Xillia in the upcoming weeks (or days, if we’re lucky), they are probably trying to avoid mixing up Ni no Kuni and ToX’s marketing efforts.

    • Demeanor

Technically that COULD be a pic from ToX2, since the character chapters grant bonus costumes, among them the ToX original ones ^ ^ there’s a HUGE amount of costumes and accessories in the game.

      • fireemblembeast

Yeah, I thought about that, too, but I remember seeing this exact screenshot with them in that exact pose in screenshots for Xillia 1. I’m glad they have those original costumes, because I love them <3

  • This is great news. Looking forward to Xillia even more now ^_^

  • eilegz

its such a sad news, seems that japan its eroding more and more in console games overall, not even a big AAA rpg can reach a good sale number. hopefully they release this game outside and hopefully like ni no kuni will achieve more sales.

    • Luna Kazemaru

Implying tales is a AAA rpg?

      • Sylveria

If it isn’t I’m not sure what is besides the Final Hallway 13 “saga”. And when your side-series consists of two games that just recycled assets, it’s hard to call it AAA any more.

        • Luna Kazemaru

You do understand half the content in tox2 is recycled yes? If you want AAA rpgs you look at dark souls and the witcher.

          • Alexander Marquis Starkey

Which have a different art style than what is usually made in Japan.

        • What Luna means is that the budget for Tales games is very tightly controlled. Stuff like Final Fantasy, Dark Souls, Xeno-whatever etc. likely has higher budgets than any Tales game.

    • ToX was one of the most successful Tales of in Japan, so 500K for a sequel is far from bad.

    • noctis_nox

It’s actually a great sales for a Tales of Series.

  • Demeanor

Finished ToX2 just yesterday, something like 115+ hrs >_> and I still have a crapton of postgame content to do lol XD The game was awesome despite the huge reuse of content, I can’t forget those epic 70000+dmg Rebirth Crusader link hi-ougis I used in the final fight. Lol the final boss is crazy strong, my Ludger had like 4700 max hp and the boss pummeled for 3000+ each blow XD
    Eagerly awaiting for Eng ToX!

  • Great for Xillia 2! 650K looks difficult because it means that every ToX owner buy ToX2 which is next to impossible, but 500K is excellent already! Still have to start it btw…

  • I hope they exceed these numbers in the US for Xilia 1. They need to start pushing the marketing soon on it. I have not even heard an exact release date.

    • Not to sound mean or negative, but there is literally 0% chance of Xillia coming anywhere near these numbers in the U.S. Keep your hopes in line so you aren’t disappointed later.

      • Oh ok. I’ll just hope it sells as well as Graces did :) I don’t have any idea how much standard jrpgs like this sell in the states. I just figured almost all games sell this many here because we are so big. I don’t think it will take much for them to make back what they put in the local release right? Over there they have to actually make the game from scratch and the US release all they are doing is translating and voice overs.

  • Pyrotek85

I hope this means we may see this one localized too.

  • s07195

Run for Money was over expectations by 150,000? Didn’t know that. (So much for reading the sales chart every week…) But I hope ToX2 continues to sell for another while.
