<< Last week’s software sales chart

Animal Crossing: New Leaf is still leading the pack in weekly software sales in Japan, but Dragon Quest VII is arriving later this week to give it a little competition. We’ll get to see how much the game sold at launch in next week’s sales chart.

Meanwhile, Level 5’s Fantasy Life role-playing game is doing rather well for itself and continues to sell, now that the issue of shortages appears to have been addressed to some extent. Fantasy Life is now at over 200,000 copies sold. Later this year, Level 5 will release a large content update for the game as DLC.

Last week also saw the release of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale in Japan. The game sold just 11,758 copies on the PlayStation 3, which isn’t surprising in the least, given the lack of characters that would appeal to a Japanese audience.

Joining it was Accel World 02: Apex of Acceleration by Namco Bandai, which sold 10,551 copies on PS3 and another 8,633 copies on the PSP.

The top-20 chart for the week was as follows:

Why arent more buying Accel World, though that is kind of similar to how much a volume of the Accel World anime sells, assuming that people are buying the game for the Accel World EX02 episode and not the game itself, which is probably really epic. Hopefully season 2 and more games and ovas are unveiled in the coming weeks.

Paper Mario seems to be failing pretty badly, hopefully this suggests to Ninty to diversify their portfolio and make games of that sort utilizing other properties that people actually want. Im still waiting for the Legend of Paper Zelda to finally be detailed and announced. It was supposed to be a launch window title for Wii U. But definitely they should try to create new titles instead of these same low range selling games.

    • Natat

And also to realize that Paper Mario is supposed to have a story and actual characters, not the same old Mario “storyline” but in paper form.

    • Solomon_Kano

Legend of Paper Zelda? Who do you get your info from, Tsuna?

In any event, Nintendo continues to produce Paper Mario games knowing that it sells these kinds of numbers. This isn’t outside of their expectations. If we look at previous entries, Sticker Star is actually an improvement. Per Nintendo’s own numbers, Super Paper Mario on Wii only managed to hit 500,000 after 11 months on the market. In contrast, here we see Sticker Star at that amount in just 3 months. Sure, we can take into account Japan’s preference for portable, but the series history wouldn’t suggest the game selling this much so quickly under any factors.

The Super Paper Mario numbers, if you’re interested:

So, no, I don’t expect you’ll see Nintendo start churning out Paper _____ next. The fact that they even made this one tells us that their expectations for this series aren’t up there with their bigger titles. Not every game they put out needs to be New Super Mario Bros. big.

      • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Retailers had legend of paper zelda in their databases last year. I thought mario is doing bad since its not even at one million vin jpn.

        • Göran Isacson

I actually investigated this, but it turns out there was only one retailer who had it, a Swedish retailer called CDON, and now that I looked it up they had removed the game from their databanks. I think it’s fair to say that whole thing was just a mistake.

          • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Darn thats unfortunate, I would have considered a Wii U if that even came out.

    • OverlordZetta

Accel World’s game is a snail slow turn based mess-slash-VN. Who in their right mind would want that?

If it were a high speed fighting game (and it has no excuse to not be), I’dve imported it no question.

      • LynxAmali

-Who in their right mind would want that?
Totally not me. Nope, totally not me.

I really wish they would’ve went with an RPG-Fighter-Visual-Novel thing like the previews led me to believe it was going to be though. It really has so much potential for a great video game adaption but they opted for the Turn based format.

    • LinkofCourage

Paper Mario failing? It’s outpacing Super Paper Mario and will soon become the best selling PM game in Japan. It even already passed 1m worldwide.
      Edit: Also
” Im still waiting for the Legend of Paper Zelda to finally be detailed and announced. It was supposed to be a launch window title for Wii U”

    • Ethan_Twain

Oh man, how do you figure Paper Mario isn’t doing well? It’s hung around on these sales charts WAY longer than any non-Pokemon RPG has any business doing. For the style of game it is, this is quite remarkable. It’s doing that Nintendo thing of selling over time rather than all in bulk up front – note that it neither moved up nor down on the charts. It just keeps trucking along.

    • Can’t imagine that Accel World game ever doing good looking as bad and sluggish as it is.

  • I thought black ops 2 sold more than that. Maybe it sold more on the xbox over there. :P

    • Solomon_Kano

That’s just the dubbed version btw. There was a subbed version released earlier, so there’s those sales too.

  • LinkofCourage

Animal Crossing still doing amazingly well. I do believe it can reach the 5m mark. All Stars bombed everywhere. Paper Mario Sticker Star will soon be the best selling entry if not already. 3DS is up YoY without any significant releases last month, should pass 150k next week. Wii U still worrying, Vita still bombing, PSP and PS3 still declining, 360 still irrelevant. Also, what’s up with Taiko?

  • Watahashi

Interesting that Famitsu’s numbers are always just a little different compared to Media Create’s:

    |System | This Week | Last Week | Last Year | YTD | Last YTD | LTD |—————————————————————————————-
    | 3DS | 82.255 | 79.793 | 69.180 | 662.964 | 791.077 | 10.425.466 |
    | PS3 | 16.346 | 17.242 | 23.290 | 138.909 | 234.966 | 8.883.242 |
    | PSP | 13.235 | 14.058 | 16.558 | 115.156 | 202.250 | 19.294.256 |
    | WIU | 11.714 | 12.335 | | 132.835 | | 771.174 |
    | PSV | 8.266 | 8.495 | 14.731 | 66.571 | 141.008 | 1.143.730 |
    | WII | 1.868 | 2.170 | 7.023 | 13.462 | 119.739 | 12.674.204 |
    | 360 | 530 | 511 | 1.007 | 3.412 | 8.923 | 1.591.423 |

    • Enterbrain and Media Create both track different stores and use different formulae to calculate their sales estimates.

      • Ethan_Twain

Huh. Is there any particular reason you use one for your regular sales updates over the other? One of the formulae strikes you as preferable? Or did you just pick one =)

        • Publishers refer to Media Create more, so that’s the one I prefer to use as well. :)

    At Nintendo HQ in Kyoto:

Iwata: “What the HELL are two Playstation Vita games doing on the top 20 list? (Last week’s chart) And one of them has had the audacity to STAY on the list this week!

Intern: “Iwata-San, I don’t think that Demon Gaze with it’s small 35.000 units sold is any threat to our market dominance”

Iwata: “I will NOT stand for this rebellion! These usurpers must be taught a lesson. They must be crushed completely.”

    Intern: “Do you mean…”

Iwata: “Yes. Call Imperial Hot. It’s time for Dragon Quest.”

  • Visa Vang

It’s not that surprising and it’s quite a shame that they call it PlayStation “All Stars” when not even half of them was in there.

  • psycho_bandaid

good to see demon gaze is still on there. My copy just shipped so I am pumped that I will get a chance to play it soon.

  • Tonton Ramos

I can still see Akihiro Hino and his Level-5 pals still celebrating there games for not only top 20 but they please the fans with such enjoyment of their games.

  • MrRobbyM

Fantasy Life still selling well? That’s what I like to hear.

  • demon gaze! :3

  • Göran Isacson

On the one hand it’s neat to see All-Stars appear at all, and to see that DmC is still hanging in there… but looking at their positions on the chart and looking at the number of sold games makes for very different and slightly depressing reading. Don’t seem to be games with much legs to stand on…

Much like God and Fate and Digimon Adventure. Shrinking in sales every week, while Fantasy Life expands and Nintendo titles sell like, well, Nintendo titles. Also, is that Accel World game any different on the different consoles, or is it essentially just the same game on both?
