Next Assassin’s Creed Game To Feature A New Time Period And Protagonist

By Ishaan . February 7, 2013 . 10:00am

A new Assassin’s Creed game is in development, and will take place in a new time period with a new lead character, Ubisoft CEO, Yves Guillemot, shared during an earnings call this morning.

Details are scarce, but Ubisoft also indicated that the new Assassin’s Creed will be developed by a different development team. No release date has been provided for the game yet, but Ubisoft plan to release the game between April 2013 and the end of March 2014.

Meanwhile, Ubisoft announced in their third-quarter earnings report that Assassin’s Creed 3 was “a record-breaking success with more than 12 million sell-in and digitally distributed units”. That’s close to a 70% increase over Assassin’s Creed: Revelations.

Please be on Ancient China, with Shao Jun as the protagonist

    • d19xx

      I want caveman assassins instead…

      • Wake

        Assassinating dinosaurs. GOTY.

    • ronin4life

      Pre meiji era 1800s Japan.

      • Matheus Mendes

Oh yeah i forgot about Japan, it would be great to assassinate Oda Nobunaga XD

        • ronin4life

That would be cool(Uesugi FTW!!o[]o//), but I was thinking late 1800s.
2 main beliefs battling against each other amidst several factions, Ninja, samurai and AC3 guns everywhere great personalities like Sakamoto Ryoma and the Shinsengumi.
Plus, the 2 things all AC game needs: an era of strife in the middle of great social upheaval and change full of riots, local skirishes and assassinations(Sakamoto mentioned above was one such victim of assassination)
I can’t repeat enough how much sense this makes. Plus how awesome it would be.

          • Aoshi00

Yeah, Bakumatsu would be quite cool for an AC setting w/ so many assassins and important political figures during the time of upheaval, just like Kenshin :) It’s a period of revolution just like AC3.. Not really sure if they would do Asia though, would everyone be speaking English interjecting some Japanese phrases? For Ezio in AC2 it sounded natural.. and even in AC3, while the Native American language was cool and authentic, I thought they overdid it a little bit.. But for all the Jpn chars to be speaking English would be a little weird, or if they speak just Jpn, it seems a bit out of place in the series.

Guess not many people liked Connor.. some were saying the next game could happen during in the War of 1812.. maybe not an interesting enough setting..

It’s a bit weird to see the timeline getting closer to the present..

    • Lee Chueng

totally agree with you. i’d like to see the next one in China or somewhere in Asia this time.

    • KingRuff

Why hasn’t Asia been used yet?

      • Matheus Mendes

IIRC they don’t want a “ninja” game

      • MogCakes

Because it’s not ‘in fashion’, I would wager.

      • natchu96

Well, they did have to point out to Ezio that the one part of Constantinople he was talking about was technically Asia and not Europe . . .

    • omegagemo

It’s gonna be Brazil, mark my words.

      • pressstart

Having it set in South America would be interesting :)

  • kupomogli

Ubisoft is starting to sound like Kojima. Instead of Metal Gear Solid is the last Metal Gear game Kojima will be working on, then Metal Gear Solid 2 comes out, repeating for for every single Metal Gear released afterwards, it’s Assassin’s Creed 3 is the last game in the series. Then they announce another.

    • Raiyu

I don’t think they ever said it would be the last game in the series. iirc, they said something along the lines of it being the end of Desmond’s story.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

How is this anything like Kojima? Ubisoft have always said that the goal with Assassin’s Creed is to release one a year. They have never said they’re going to bring the series to an end.

    • AkuLord3

I think you mean Konami…and i thought MGS4 was “supposedly” going be the last game…its not because there’s still some much to be told and seen. And they never said AC3 was the last one…just for Desmond

  • Gabi López Ramírez

I love this news. Always hoping for some interaction and emphasis in Mexico!

  • Valtiel Ikari

hope they use the french revolution idea they had for 2 but was scrapped later, sounds like it could be a great concept for this game series, jumping through the rooftops of París, helping the revolution from the shadows.

  • Potionzmaster

They are releasing it in the fiscal year 2014, which means before the end of March 2015, not 2014 :P

    • http://popculturesocialclub.com/ DreamDrop♥

What’s your source, because everyone other site is saying before the end March 2014

      • d19xx

You dare question him? That dude is a wizard!

        • http://popculturesocialclub.com/ DreamDrop♥

Yeah, cause he’s wrong. Ubisoft’s next fiscal year will run from April 1, 2013, through March 31, 2014. The announcement wasn’t for fiscal year 2014, it was for next fiscal year.

          • Potionzmaster

How can you say this, when the guy specifically says “financial year 2014″? Am I missing something?

          • http://popculturesocialclub.com/ DreamDrop♥

The article you linked to has it wrong.

          • Potionzmaster

Another source (close to the end of the summary): http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=512154

          • http://popculturesocialclub.com/ DreamDrop♥

A: First quarter 2014 is still FY13, not 14 and B: I doubt Assassin’s Creed is going to skip holiday 2013. They always release during holiday

          • Potionzmaster

It actually says FY14, not first quarter? But you know what, never mind. Maybe I’m just too stupid to understand >_>

      • Potionzmaster
        • d19xx

You must read that in Alan Rickman’s voice for full effect…

        • http://popculturesocialclub.com/ DreamDrop♥

Here’s the catch: We’re still in fiscal year 2012. Ubisoft’s next fiscal year will run from April 1, 2013, through March 31, 2014.

          • Potionzmaster

So you’re saying next fiscal year, which will be FY 2013, ends in March 2014..? I don’t understand how that changes anything.
            (I’m genuinly trying to understand.)

          • http://popculturesocialclub.com/ DreamDrop♥

Fiscal years run from April to April. I’m not 100%, but I’m fairly certain that it’s for tax purposes what with taxes being filed in April as well. So FY12 started Apr 01, 2012 and ends Mar 31, 2013. FY13 (aka next fiscal year) runs Apr 01, 2013 and ends Mar 31, 2014.

  • Spirit Macardi

Nice to see they aren’t going to be milking the same character over and over again like what happened with Ezio x3

Personally I’d love an Assassin’s Creed game to be set during the battle between the Roman Empire and the Celtic lands.

  • OathkeeperSoraXIII

whilst I did enjoy Assassin’s creed 3. I felt it was overhyped. I didn’t like Connor much. He didn’t have much of a personality about him. he felt very 1 dimensional as opposed to Ezio.

I’ve always loved the stories because of how the bigger picture had a smaller picture inside it. It was basically a big plot (Desmond) within smaller plots (The Assassin) I liked how they combined them both. It was always hinted though that 2012 would be the end (meaning AC3) I believe the game was overhyped because people thought they’d get a true conclusion to the series. I personally was disappointed. The ending was okay…but it just left more questions and another reason to keep making the games. Like I said don’t get me wrong, I love the series. But 5 games in and now we’re back to square 1- New person since *spoilers* Desmond is supposedly dead *end spoilers* and back to a new assassin.

As long as they can keep it refreshing and innovative and give the new characters some actual personality. then I don’t mind at all. the hype around climbing trees etc in AC3 was horrible. I found most of my time on the ground then on top of buildings and trees except for a few areas.

  • TrevHead

I’d like to see Victorian London or even better pre 1666 great fire of London.
Maybe add in modern day Mexico city and it’s slums.

    • landlock

Well UBI Soft brought the 1666 game from THQ so there won’t be a different Assassin’s Creed one. Unless they slap the name on that one.

  • http://popculturesocialclub.com/ DreamDrop♥

I’m betting it uses the same story concept as ACIII: Liberation, wherein you only ever see the historical character but the meta game is still there as is the Animus.

  • Neutron15

the series should take a 1-2 year break but no, I expect a japanese assassin :)

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

… Oh, wait, they were serious about that whole ” annualised franchise”-thing? Damn. Every 1 and 1/2 to 2 years is fine, but annually? Over-saturation is not a positive thing…

Though, the fact that nothing was mentioned about a AC:Liberation sequel or further spin-off titles is odd…

  • RaikageV

    16. century Japan pls.
Would be cool to see Oda in AC. xD

  • MrRobbyM

Literally anywhere that isn’t in Europe or America would be great. I don’t even care for story. Just let me kill some baddies in some awesome environments please.

  • https://twitter.com/mikedo2007 mikedo2007

I would love an Assassin’s Creed that can take place in Asia. Japan, China, maybe Ancient Korea.

  • Jrocy247

    Sengoku Era, COME ON!!!!

    • James Todd

      thats wht i was thinking

  • Hinataharem

    Egypt

  • SirRichard

C’mon, China. I’ve seen people do so much amazing artwork about a game set in a past China, I want it to be real. And it’d make a nice change from Europe and the Middle East.

I’m hoping that Ubisoft have listened to criticisms of III, because it was incredibly disappointing in nearly every way and it honestly seemed like they rushed it because of so much time being spent on the engine. It’d be particularly nice if the side missions had all the side-story background detail like the previous games’ ones, and if run and climb weren’t the same button so I stop humping barrels in the countless chases.

And if there were more, you know, assassinations.

  • DCBlackbird

new zealand…………….we don’t get much of that delight here

  • Jesse Torres

I would really like it to take place in Japan, be an assassin ninja, yeahhhhh!!!

  • Guest

    Samurai’s Creed!

  • JunHoward

Hanzo hattori from Sengoku era now!!!

  • OverlordZetta

… Seriously? That’s lame. After all Ezio got, I was really hoping we could stick in one of my favorite historical time periods for a while.
    Major bummer.
Well, if they head down to the Sengoku era of Japan or the time of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms in China, I could be very okay with that.

  • alixraen

For some reason, I’m thinking 1917 and World War I. I know the Sengoku Era and the Three Kingdoms are popular ideas, but they’ve been overdone, I think.

  • LynxAmali

    So…
The next game isn’t going to be Desmond?

    Okay. Still waiting.

  • James Todd

world war 2 Germany make it happen
