Here’s What Exploration Looks Like In Shin Megami Tensei IV

By Ishaan . February 22, 2013 . 12:00pm

Shin Megami Tensei IV appears to have a wide variety of fields, ranging from actual dungeon-like areas to outdoor areas to modern-day office spaces. Atlus have shared a new video via the game’s official website that provides a quick look at some of them:

Additionally, Atlus have also shared videos of the game’s Samurai characters talking. Below, you can find short clips of Walter, Jonathan, Isabeau and Navarre:

Shin Megami Tensei IV will be released on May 23rd in Japan.

    dat awkward walking animation

    • neocatzon

then suddenly drift turn to right/left XD

    • Ethan_Twain

Yeah, that was kind of my takeaway too actually. The jogging animation has the arms stuck out from the body a little bit further than any human would ever actually do. I reckon that’s to account for all the different costumes we saw in the trailer, so that one motion animation can fit all suits.

  • vileBrenman

Yes the art the graphics thus is gonna be one bamf game.
    Ps. Bamf=bad a$$ mother fu##ing

    • benhofb

I like dem grifix… It is probably weird, but I think the text boxes are pretty cool too…

      • http://vindictushots.tumblr.com/ Okuni-chan

Not weird at all as I thought the same thing.

  • Brandon001

I love how the video also showed many different oufits, and forms of gear. Damn, i hope it gets localized, i need this.

    • benhofb

Welp considering how Atlus is localizing Soul Hackers, I’d say this has a pretty good chance. That and also how SMTxFire Emblem was announced for the states…

      • Brandon001

        it was??

        • Ethan_Twain

It was, at the very least, shown off during the US Nintendo Direct. There isn’t any precedent for them showing off Japan exclusives during one of those. That’s why they break them down by region after all :)

          • http://twitter.com/Fillytase Sneferie

That Direct wasn’t broken down by region, iirc, it was a simultaneous worldwide thing. Nonetheless, I’m pretty sure it will come to the West, too.

          • Brandon001

lmao @ the one person that gave me a thumbs down for my ignorance on a localization for FExSMT hahah

          • Ethan_Twain

That’s a new thing – there are just one or two people who have taken to scrolling down these articles and downvoting most everything. I kinda wish we could still see the little label of who has up or down voted a comment. Both because it discouraged this practice, and also because it made me feel warm and fuzzy inside if I could ever get a staff member to thumbs up one of my comments.

  • Curan_Altea

Really nice graphics for a 3DS game. I expect this to get localized so I’m pretty excited. I love a good handheld RPG.

    • Armane

I hope they bring over the themed XL along with it, this game is currently my number 1 reason for getting a 3DS.

  • Zeik56

I think I’ve gotten to the point where I need to stop watching trailers for this game, or I’ll end up spoiling too much.

  • benhofb

I hope that the developers were smart and will let us control the camera with the L and R buttons. I don’t want to have to go and get a CPP or somethin…

    • Hound

Judging solely by the video, it seems like the character was being controlled with Forward and turning with L & R. That’d explain why the character was turning a sharp 90° despite an enemy and ladder being off to the side.

I imagine that’d be the preferred method of walking for whomever is playing thanks to the sharp corners and the need to keep the camera in check.

  • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

So… is this “analog” exploration, where you can walk to any spot within each area’s limits, or “digital” exploration, where you’re limited to a specific rail or set of waypoints? I have to wonder, because of how straight the travel paths are and how precisely the corners are turned. Although, I can’t exactly imagine the on-rail approach here, considering the recent Persona and Raidou titles already have analog exploration. Not to mention that this could just as easily have been automated for the sake of the promo video.

    • DesmaX

I was just going to say that, but then I see the end of the video. He moved more freely there

      • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

I saw that, but he walked straight to the ladder, and being an entry/exit point, there could have been a waypoint there. I dunno though, it’s just speculation on my part.

    • neocatzon

I think it’s might “digital” exploration if I’m using your word. Personally, I hate this kind of exploration that often used in first person dungeon rpg because players can’t see the characters. But, the video just shows me a new light :’)

    • Farid Belkacemi

20 bucks on the analog exploration :p

    • Zeik56

If they wanted “digital” exploration they would have just kept it first person. There’s really no advantage to the player or the developer by making it 3rd person and then forcing it to be on rails. And it’s not like hardware constraints would force it.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

If you’re asking if it’s on-rails, I don’t think it is. The older trailers show him not sticking as close to the “racing line” as this one.

      • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

I guess. On-rails doesn’t make sense to me either; I just asked because of what I see in the video.

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Yeah, no… I was kind of worried, too, haha. It could still turn out on-rails, but let’s hope that isn’t the case. Like @Zeik56:disqus said, there’s little point to making it third-person and on-rails. It would feel really counterintuitive and limiting while playing.

    • Hound

I was playing Nocturne earlier, and I found that even in its opening, the character remains rather centered and makes tight turns around corners using the camera pivot as well. Could just be their preferred method of exploration.

  • DesmaX

Hm… Something says to me that Navarre is Chaos.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

But we ady have our chaos poster boy Walter….. Or maybe he the secret route?

  • Ninten

Did the Hero just run wearing a Rabbit’s head at 0:29? Sick.

    • Jonattas F.

It’s a Donnie Darko outfit lol

    • amagidyne

      Hotline Mikado

  • Watahashi

The camera seems a little too… loose and shaky, I guess? Like someone using a handheld cam. It made me a little motion sick. Other than that, looks cool.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

That actually seems to be YouTube’s fault. I don’t know why it’s doing that.

      update: Fixed now.

  • DDanny

There better be a demon and angel outfit, with wings. Seriously, it’s the least the forces of Law and Chaos could offer you for selling your soul to them.

  • SetzerGabbiani

Can’t wait! There has to be a hidden Strange Journey costume or Hitoshura skin. Matter of fact, I almost expect this to have a costume from each SMT represented in the SMT x Fire Emblem announcement trailer.

    • Ethan_Twain

An earlier story revealed that there will be a character in the game wearing a Demonica suit from Strange Journey (though black with red highlights this time). I hope that satisfies your thirst for crossover apparel.

      • Brandon001

acquire demonica suit upon beating said character

      • SetzerGabbiani

Yes, I remember that. I also think she’s probably the representation of Lucifer in this game.

  • Clifford Michael

    That camera movement is incredible.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

If you’re talking about the shakey-cam effect, that was actually YouTube’s fault, haha. It’s fixed now.

      • Clifford Michael

        Aw. I liked it.

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Yeah, it did look cool! Although, I would imagine it would pose problems for people with motion sickness. Someone actually already commented on that below.

  • raymk

I just want the game to come out, but i’ll be busy with soul hackers until that time.

  • ragingmerifes

So many places to explore… and look, some of them are really familiar.

  • Testsubject909

    Soooo…

Does that mean this game will have a special Samurai Frost Hee-Ho!?

  • dahuuuundge

the orange place reminds me of the Amala Network
perhaps we can have Demi-fiend cross over?

  • Pockystix

kinda wish they put as much effort in the great environments into the battles. . .

all that customization also made me wish for a FeMC lol

I’ll be getting the game as soon as it comes out, but I just wanted to get the nitpicking out of the way now > w>

  • CirnoLakes

    Dat music.

  • personablaze

I wonder if we will see Demi fiend…or dante..I would love to see em both.

    • AkuLord3

Dante…ehhh small (rather see Raidou >.>) though Demi Fiend maybe. WHo knows he could be an Optional Boss or some type of cameo

  • Göran Isacson

I wonder if that first video demonstrates that your appearance changes depending on which equipment you’re wearing, or if those are pre-set skins of some kind.

  • amagidyne

I still wish Meguro was doing the soundtrack, but I suppose the BGM here is closer to the classic SMT music than his stuff is.

  • Jirin

Nice to see the Nocturne/DDS style graphical approach, that’s what I was hoping for. I need to get an XL for this.

Not a fan of the portrait dialog, I find that far less immersive than just using the normal graphics for conversations and a speech bubble. I’ve always found portrait dialog fantasy-breaking, but I guess it’s a necessity on smaller screens.
