Devil Survivor 2: Break Code Announced, Has New Story Content [Update]

By Ishaan . March 2, 2013 . 9:00am

Atlus’ new Devil Survivor 2 game project has been revealed at a preview event for the upcoming Devil Survivor 2 anime, according to attendees.

As suspected, the new game will be an updated version of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2, and is headed to the Nintendo 3DS. The game will be titled Devil Survivor 2: Break Code.

Devil Survivor 2: Break Code will come with new characters and story elements. The game will be officially announced via the March 28th issue of Famitsu magazine and is slated for release this Summer in Japan.

The original Devil Survivor 2 was released for the Nintendo DS in 2011. A website named Nicaea has the ability to predict people’s deaths, and notifies them by e-mail when they’re about to die. After narrowly escaping death, the game’s three main characters learn that the world is being invaded by demons, but that an application on their cell phones allows them to summon demons of their own, to fight off the invaders.

Update: Release window added.

  • Izzy Miyake

Excellent, was banking on an updated version for the 3ds.

  • Ayaka

Sounds nice, expecially the new characters-part.

  • let me skip scenes and i’ll gladly beat it 5 more times

  • SetzerGabbiani

    Do want! NAO!

  • benhofb

I’m putting my money on Jungo the Cat being a playable character.

No, but fo real. Make the DeSu 1 MC a playable character or boss.

    • Ferofax

Naoya ending MC would be a cool hidden boss character.

  • zangkief

lets hope they switch the screens for the sake of the 3D this time…

    • Ferofax

      Highly unlikely.

  • redhood56

YES!I also expect there to be updated graphics, and(maybe) voice acting. But i have no doubt in At;us USA bringing it over here!

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

This gets me in the mood to finally start Overclocked. Really like how the anime is doing for DeSu 2.

  • $29082171

    This was expected.

Good thing I never bought the original DS2.

  • darkbartz

DeSu1 MC as a bonus King of Bel boss is all I wanted since DeSu2 was announced. Probably wouldn’t get it though, cause if the changes are like Overclocked, it wouldn’t be worth it.

  • r0gamer940

now bring it to the us

  • AnimeRemix

A bit glad that I never got around to buying the original… Now I can go straight to the 3DS version. =D

    • lordroto

      likewise lol

  • Ethan_Twain

I really hope that the additional content is spaced throughout the game rather than tacked onto the end as it was in Devil Survivor Overclocked. These games are very long and quite hard… replaying the game to see a different final act is a big thing to ask for. Replaying the same game and seeing the same ending again to see the extension of that ending… that’s too much. I love Devil Survivor, but not enough to pay for the privilege of replaying everything again in a game that already encouraged replay.

But if this mixes up the flow of the campaign a little more, then I’m all ears.

    • Calintz YT

      Well said.

    • Claud12

…..I played desu 13 times. I have no idea how I did it tho XD

  • SirRichard

Well, guess we’re not seeing that one, at this rate. Not surprising they did this, though, especially not with the anime and all.

  • StarWarudo

So is this a sequel to Overclock?

    • Ethan_Twain

Kinda. No story connection though. Just an enhanced port of an original Devil Survivor 2. DS 2 fixes some of the balance issues in the original and adds a new mechanic or two, but the changes are pretty much inside baseball. Very similar, even going so far as to recycle most of the stages from the original game.

      • MrTyrant

Adding more story elements and new characters are not minor things. Pretty much if this new part in the story are related with the new cast and if they add epilogues or more events between characters then it’s really an improvement. Voices, abilities and new bosses (extras) or new demons to recruit are the minor changes.

        • Ethan_Twain

I meant the changes from Devil Survivor to Devil Survivor 2. I’ll edit the original to clarify that.

          • MrTyrant

            My bad.

  • Alicemagic

Awesome, just 4 more years until it reaches Europe!

    • Claud12

I know right XD Good thing I bought US 3DS so only 2 years for me XD

  • If I owned a 3DS, I would definitely buy this. I actually enjoyed the first Devil Survivor.

  • Just Tim

I hope we’d be granted a Septentriones Boss Rush in DeSu2: BC!

  • Eileen Sy

I wish they’d make a female counterpart to the main character you could play as. It just makes the experience a little bit more pleasant to some.

    • Like in the Persona series, yes?

    • OverlordZetta

Only if playing as a female character would actually change the story at all. It didn’t matter enough to warrant it in Persona 3, and I think Atlus should really work on implementing how drastic changes will be with a new protagonist before they try it again. Much as I liked P3P and FeMC, that was just a steaming pile of wasted potential.

      • You must take into consideration that female counterparts added into games attract more female gamers. It wasn’t necessarily just for boys. Also, I couldn’t see much more added to P3P to have wasted any potential. The fact it has P4’s updated system is fine with me enough.

      • Göran Isacson

Kinda curious now, as someone who didn’t play the PSP port- what did you feel was wasted potential in that game? All I heard was that the FeMC was pretty much like male MC except she could date boys instead, and that… doesn’t sound horrible to me, I guess?

  • AuraGuyChris

Voiced Airi & Kama scene GO!

  • AuraGuyChris

And then I just found out that Yamato has a younger twin sister named Miyako.
Ooh, maybe she’s a new character.

  • Called it! *proceed to OH YEAH abt it anyway* Now where is tht Party Hard gif ^.^;

Wait, __code is the new naming convention now? And lol DW R:D Decode also has new character and Yasuda doing the art…

Tht said, start the bets guys! Will the new character have anti gravity tits? XD

  • Niyari

well, now i’m confident that there’s going to be an updated P3 FES eventually.

    • Ethan_Twain

I keep on thinking that, and it keeps on not happening! I don’t get it, it seems like a perfect fit. 1. Persona 3 has an anime moving coming soon to tie in with. 2. The 3DS is absolutely killing it in Japan and it’s at just about the right technology level for PS2 ports. 3. Atlus loves to develop on the cheap, and a handheld port of their successful Persona 3 fits that bill nicely. 4. There isn’t a definitive Persona 3 yet. Ideally they could put it all together and have a version with the animated cut scenes from the original, the epilogue from FES, and the female main character from P3P. 5. Persona 3D is too easy a title to pass up.

    • Zeik56

…Why? We’ve already got 3 versions of Persona 3, we really don’t need another so soon.

      • Isaac Newton

I think he want to be like the never ending and never wanted FF XIII Lightning Series

        • MrTyrant

          Stop giving me nightmares! :P

    • LynxAmali

      NO. NO.

P3 already has Persona 3, Persona 3 FES AND P3 Portable.
That’s one too many for a game that only came out in 2006.

      • Niyari

P3P isn’t a proper version of the game. It has updated battle mechanics, but the entirety of the story isn’t included. Just from playing the PS2 version, I will always know more about the story than someone who exclusively played the PSP one. (not trying to be condescending… just stating facts)

Besides, what harm is there in releasing an updated version anyways? If you didn’t get what I was implying in my initial comment, I was thinking that they could release an updated version to coincide with the upcoming P3 movies. And when you consider how hush-hush the first movie still is, it would obviously be a long time before the game was made, much less localized.

        • LynxAmali

-P3P isn’t a proper version of the game.

Except it is. It’s still a P3 game.

-Just from playing the PS2 version, I will always know more about the story than someone who exclusively played the PSP one.

Well, duh? You played one that, gee, had an extended epilogue (albeit rather an un-needed epilogue.)

-Besides, what harm is there in releasing an updated version anyways?

Its called re-releasing the same game, multiple times, with no good reason, when the original issue was perfectly fine.

  • Sentsuizan_93

Hmm… Never played a Devil Survivor game, but I’ll start with Overclocked when it hits Europe. This sounds pretty cool though. Hope it comes over.

  • Oh, well. Good thing I didn’t buy Devil Survivor 2 yet!

    • MrTyrant

Honest, the game is relative new, old ports were from games that had near 10 years but now you can release the same game in another system with extra things in less than 4 years. Because I knew this, I didn’t buy the original.

  • ragingmerifes

3D Daichi with voiceovers. Think about it.

    • 3D Hinako/Fumi. Think abt tht too.

      • MrTyrant

        3D anti-gravity tits. I like it.

  • This is awesome! I love the Devil Survivor series <3 In fact, I love any game Atlus releases, they're just awesome!

  • leadintea

Wow… I JUST got the original a couple of days ago….

    • Ferofax

To be fair, this isn’t gonna come to the west any time soon. Probably a year before we get it.

      • zeta

US got the Overclocked first before japan if I remember it right its a 1 month gap

  • pho_Enix

Hey Ghostlight, scrap your plans to localise DS2 and localise this version instead. Kthx.

    • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Ultimately that would be up to Atlus, as Ghostlight doesn’t do the translating on the SMT titles, they just use what’s already there and publish it in the EU.

  • Richard N

    • Isaac Newton

yeah I thought it will be called overclocked

  • This sounds really great, but I’m at the end of the game right now. I mean I love the game and all, but I honestly don’t wanna have to play it over again at the moment.

  • personablaze

This is good(For people who dont have the Original..but I just beat it an I dont wanna do it again for awhile)
On a side note,Am I the only one that is tired of seeing atlus re-release games? I would like more New games..or a new series..not just remakes with add on’s…

  • JordyZ

Haven’t bought the first one on my 3DS, I’ll pick up both until this one comes out.

  • RoxasTheUnknown1

Hopefully it wont take long for the N.A release. I skipped DeSu 2 because I knew this would happen.

I hope it’s gonna see release outside of Japan as well. After what happened to Eternal Punishment for PSP, I’m no longer 100% sure that every MegaTen game will make it here. Fingers crossed.

    • raymk

The psp game was different because the psp is dead in the west. It would bomb just like Persona 2 on psp did in the west so why would they bring out another persona 2 to sell even less? Basically if its a game and it has to do with psp being used as an comparison….don’t use it. The 3ds is a new system and that’s why atlus are releasing every game they own for it and even then some.

      • KingGunblader

Would it have been so crazy to put it on PSN? That way anyone with a PSP OR a Vita could download it. Then all they have to do is a quick ad where they say “HEY, do you like Persona 4 Golden? Persona 2 is on PSN for Vita BUY IT.”

        • They’d need to localize the game all over again for there to even be a version they could put up on PSN. I don’t know what the reason for it not coming over is, though. One of Atlus’ editors mentioned “unusual circumstances” but that’s all that was said.

          • KingGunblader

Hmm too bad. :/ I played Overclocked, and I liked it. So I’ll wait for this instead of buying DS2.

  • Yay it’s finally announced. Good thing I held off on DS2 even though I love DSO. So when is it coming to the US? I really like the name too. Better than boring ol Overclocked. So happy. :D

  • Zeik56

Looks like my waiting payed off. I was very close to picking up the DS version over the last few months.

Hopefully it comes out here in a reasonable time frame.

  • Chao Wu

Main reason I never bought DS2, because I expected something like this too happen when Overclock first came out.

  • dahuuuundge

not sure how the 8th day will work on this one since each ending have such drastic changes on the universe

  • Warboss Aohd

    well dat woz predictable.

  • Break Code… a Fumi mode perhaps? Sounds very Fumi-like. Doubt it though. Will probably have the anime voices or added scenes from the anime such as what seems to be more AO time.

  • Göran Isacson

WELP- gonna be interesting to see if they’re gonna call off localizing the original version for Europe, and just go with the updated one instead.

    • I doubt they can at this point. They’ve already paid for the licensing rights.

      • Göran Isacson

Mmm, a likely outcome. I guess one can hope that they were told by the developer that they were developing another version, and wouldn’t they rather wait for that one buuut that’s mostly just wishful thinking on my behalf.

        • Yeah, unfortunately, I don’t think Ghostlight are in a position where Index are telling them about stuff like this months in advance. :(

    • Be carefull with tht can of worms, tht all. All the best for you guys in Europe.

  • Calintz YT

I have no idea why, but I am looking forward to this game.

  • Spirit Macardi

I held off buying the original DS version since I figured something like this would happen. I’m glad it did too!

I already have no doubt this will reach the US, since Atlus is awesome like that. I just wonder if they’ll be able to match the quality of voice acting that was in Overclocked, since it had some damn talented people like Spike Spencer, Kyle Hebert, and Kirk Thornton. I’m certainly looking forward to seeing what they come up with though :3

  • nonamekeyblade

maybe they want to make all desu 1 character vs all desu 2 character or AO vs king of bel.ahhhhh……… what a nice dream i had.

  • MrTyrant

Secret boss Demi-fiend. Yeah, I want those assrapes in the game D:

if any of you cares, singer of DeSu2 TA OP& ED is confirmed. Also, they showed the 1st 4 ep at the event.

  • Glad I didn’t buy the DS version yet. I was planning to buy one soon but since I haven’t finished Devil Survivor Overclocked, I delayed it. I hope we could get the english version next year. :D

  • komiko12

Another game to look forward to… It would be a pain to do everything again as I was very near to 100% completion in the original DS2. I’ve cracked all skills, got all demons, just one ending left and I’m finished with the game.

So what do you think the new content would be?
Tico being a playable character by gaining a humanoid form?
    Yamato’s twin sister?
    Dera-Deka replacing Ronaldo?
Playable characters from Sapporo, Beppu, Fukuoka?
A Super Golden Ending where you can actually save all characters?

  • LonelyGamer

So, will we have Devil Survivor 3 after this ?

    • komiko12

Of course! And after that it will have an updated version on the next Nintendo handheld :D

    • I think that depends on whether Atlus’ approach to Megaten spin-offs has changed in these last few years. The norm is two games per spin-off, judging by Devil Summoner/Soul Hackers, Raidou/Raidou 2 and DDS1/DDS2.

They may just choose to end Devil Survivor with two games and do something different for their next spin-off. Or maybe they’ve changed gears a little and will produce a third game, since they seem to be promoting the franchise now, what with an anime and everything.

      • komiko12

I do hope that Devil Survivor would become the next popular series from MegaTen right after the Persona and ShinMegaTen series. (I think Persona is more popular than ShinMegaTen.)

        • They’ll need to do a lot more with Devil Survivor if they want it to reach that level of popularity, IMO. It’s a little too simplistic at the moment. Not that this is a bad thing… the DS games so far have been made on a fairly tight budget, which helps keep them profitable. Just that it’s something they’ll need to address if they want to grow the series. It’ll need to be a bigger deal than it currently is, in terms of features and production values.

          • komiko12

Oh.. I don’t mind if it doesn’t get the same level of popularity as Persona or SMT but I do want it to be popular enough to ensure that more would come (not just updated versions of the same game). The character designs by Suzuhito Yasuda and the interesting mix of turn-based combat and SRPG were very attractive aspects of the game. They can definitely improve on many things about the game because this generation of handhelds are powerful.

Atlus can do it of they really want to.

  • Detrimont

I’m hoping for an actual anime opening, and hopefully some anime cutscenes(voice acting is sure to be in it already, so i dont need to ask for that)

  • Spatulising

Goddamnit Atlus, what are you doing

  • Ladius

I still haven’t played Devil Survivor 2 and I don’t mind waiting for an updated version :)

  • Oltheros

    Full voiced?

Ah, well we know how that’ll end up turning out.

  • kaizin

woot glad to see they remade this i loved overclock and this one i bet will be just as good cant wait to see more.

  • Hound

So, we should wait two to three years after every SMT/Persona game to ensure we get the best version? The games are all absurdly rare after that long around here.
I sincerely pray that Atlus releases DLC every 2-4 years now that everything’s in the DLC generation.

  • Yuriangels

so don’t really need to the old version of the game?

  • Guest

3DS is getting some nice games now, very different from the launch line up. Even if this is really just an enhanced version of an already existing game, it’s still great!
