Ex-WayForward Developers Announce Shovel Knight For PC, 3DS, Wii U

By Ishaan . March 18, 2013 . 2:00pm

Yacht Club Games consists of developers that previously worked at WayForward Technologies. Started in 2011, the studio is comprised of ex-WayForward staff that worked on games like Contra 4, A Boy and His Blob, Thor: God of Thunder, Mighty Milky Way, BloodRayne Betrayal, and Double Dragon Neon. Their first original title is called Shovel Knight:

Shovel Knight is described as an 8-bit game inspired by Mega Man, Castlevania and Dark Souls. You play as the ShovelBlade wielding Shovel Knight, who has two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and save his lost beloved. The game is being funded via Kickstarter and is in development for PC, with Nintendo 3DS and Wii U versions to follow.

Shovel Knight’s Kickstarter goal is $75,000. As of now, the game is a little over $27,000 in contributions with 26 days left to go before the deadline. You can read more about the game and its development here.

  • TrevHead

Wonderboy meets Megaman meets a whopping big shovel, nice

  • Woo probably get 3DS version unless Wii U version ends up better version.
The pogo attack reminds me of DuckTales.

  • I like this already xD

  • CirnoLakes

Imagine if this existed when we were children.

Kids would have been begging their parents for shovels.

  • Letiumtide

This is exactly the type of thing I have been waiting for, more games lovingly crafted in pixels with amazing detail. <3

  • Shane Guidaboni

They already have this trailer and it seems like the game is far into development. What will happen if the kickstarter isn’t fulfilled?

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Shovels are one of the worlds best melee weapons. I wish more games had them lol and the game looks great

    • Exkaiser

No better partner in a trench than your shovel!

  • Suicunesol

    Very, very gameboycolory.

  • Reminds me a lot of Scrooge the Duck from the NES.

  • Exkaiser

I saw this on Steam Greenlight last night and voted for it. Seems pretty legit.

Has WayForward Technologies released that program that takes financial data and turns it into music yet? It’s been years since they announced it. Their programmer needs to get off his duff and accept the fact that he’s never going to get his couch out of that stairwell.

    • Icedus

I see what you did there.

  • Caleb

I think the design of this game looks great, it’s really clever. They made a shovel seem as natural of a weapon as a sword. It’s as if it has been done a million times.

  • Sergio Briceño

Kind of reminds me of Aladdin for SNES. You start with 3 simple abilities (jump, throw apples and occasionally glide), and those three simple abilities are all you have for the whole game. But learning how to use them in various ways and having good reflexes is what made that game enjoyable.

This too, looks like you just have to try to look for different uses for a single weapon, your shovel, depending on the occasion. Be it bouncing around, redirecting projectiles, digging up treasure or pushing big rocks around. I don’t know, it gave me that Aladdin feel a lot more than those games it’s obviously trying to emulate with it’s style and look. I love all of those games, but I loved Aladdin more, so I’m definitely looking forward to this.

Also, you can’t go wrong with 8-bit.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I really hope that this game is going to come to 3DS here. I need more Megaman style game.^_^

  • Ha! This looks awesome!

  • gamerdude

The background color schemes look like they could use a bit more work but other than that I’ll probably buy this based on that shovel sprite alone.

  • Do want. Afraid that the Wii U and 3DS versions -probably- won’t get a European release though, crying shame really. Would probably still order it for PC on release / pledge after a little more research into this.

  • d19xx

    I totally dig this game….

  • Icedus

I wan’t aware WayForward had reached the point of having ex-staff.

  • NimbusStev

Man, I feel like WayForward came out of nowhere. Everything related to them has been awesome lately!

  • Margatroids

Seems like another piece of shovelware to me.
