Arc System Works President Confirms Clone Phantasma, Talks About US Expansion

By Spencer . March 20, 2013 . 6:28pm

This happened kind of quietly, so you may not have heard Arc System Works opened up a US division earlier this month. The company known for fighting games like Guilty Gear and BlazBlue also makes a bunch downloadable 3DS games and even brings Western games like Nano Assault Neo EX to Japan. We spoke with Minoru Kidooka, President of Arc System Works, about the US branch.

Hey cool, Arc System Works has an office in North America. What’s the goal for Arc System Works USA?

Minoru Kidooka, President: Our bread and butter, Guilty Gear, has fans not only in the United States, but around the world, as well. Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R will soon be available for digital download on the PlayStation Vita; therefore, we felt that establishing communication with English speaking audiences was a must. I want to take this moment to emphasize, this venture is not necessarily “Arc System Works USA” as much as “Arc System Works in English.”

Our long term goals? Why, world domination, of course.

Is Arc System Works planning on releasing the Vita version digitally?

The North American digital version of +R is under development for the Vita. Hang tight, follow us on twitter, and we’ll announce any news we have in the coming days.

Is Arc System Works planning anything for Guilty Gear fans, other than ports?

But, of course we are!

Is Arc System Works planning bringing over BlayzeBloo: Clone Phantasma for 3DS?

We would love to publish this title in the states, but we’re a little short-staffed at the moment. Clone Phantasma is currently in the “localization queue” with a couple other titles.

Is Arc System Works going to localize downloadable 3DS games like Usagimaru of the Hurricane or Takagarioh for North America?

As far as Nintendo 3DS downloadable titles are concerned, we plan on releasing them, one at a time.

How about all of the visual novels or adventure games?

If we feel there’s a strong enough demand in the states, we would love to look at our options for publishing.

And retail 3DS games like the Kunio-kun titles?

We will need a little publisher support, but if there’s a strong enough demand in certain markets, it would be worth considering.

Arc System Works has a long running relationship with Circle Entertainment, another company we spoke with on Siliconera. How did you get in touch with Circle Entertainment to start working together and will we see more Circle Entertainment titles in the future?

Originally, we started working together on Rare Land Story (“Ranshima Monogatari – Rare Land Story: Shojo no Yakujou” in Japan). With our relationship established there, we are now looking into developing a few other projects.

I noticed Arc System Works has been actively licensing Western games for Japan such as Nano Assault Neo EX. Can you tell us more about Arc System Works plans to publish Western titles?

We listen to the voices of our Japanese users, and try to develop new business relationships with foreign publishers as well as independent developers. Of course, the ultimate goal here is to bring good quality entertainment and interactive media to our Japanese patrons.

In the future, is Arc System Works USA going to handle BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma which has been announced for PS3? And by the way, how is the console version doing?

The US PS3 release of BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma is still TBD.

I REALLY hope they aren’t taking BB away from Aksys. They’ve done amazing things.

    • Ikr? Surely they have to bring Aksys Games much closer to them now that they have a US division.

      • @Solomon_Kano:disqus @benhofb:disqus I share some of the same sentiments as you guys. Granted I for awhile I always though Aksys was a combined version of Arc Systems Works, even with that confusion Aksys has never disappointed me with the handling of many of Arc System Works game or any games they have translated and localized even if they do adlib (Funimation has a habit of doing this as well and sometimes not by choice seeing as how some of the japanese jokes will go over folks’ heads on the other side of the planet).

        • Solomon_Kano

That ASW = Aksys slip up is surprisingly common lol.

        • Mister_Nep

You know I’ve always seen a correlation between these company’s localization habits. I’ve always considered Atlus and Aksys the Funimation of the video game industry.

    • Solomon_Kano

With them apparently being short on staff, I’d imagine a partnership is more likely than them outright grabbing BB. At this point, anyway. It’s definitely happening at some point.

      • benhofb

I do find it odd that they felt the need to make a U.S. branch when Aksys was doing a pretty good jobs with their games anyways.

        • Solomon_Kano

Has Aksys localized all the ASW games we’ve seen or just BB?

Regardless, their president did say that ASW wanted an English language presence to better communicate with us western fans so I don’t think it was motivated by any issue with Aksys’ handling.

    • Astrotrain

I only want that they do a better translation in story mode and not add stupid jokes that are not in the original script. Or at least no adding them every freaking time.

      • cj_iwakura

Their translations were amazing. No valley pirate girl Nu, no sale.

        • Astrotrain

Oh man, that Nu was the worst.

    • yo1234

If they take BB then that would let aksys publish more games that they otherwise wouldn’t. Which means we get more games here. Thus, i’m all for it.

  • DesmaX

So… I’ll assume there it will not have a 360 version?

    • Raoni Marques

I hope they make a 360 version. If I’m not mistaken, when they announced Continuum Shift (or extend, most likely), I didn’t see any anouncement for a 360 version, but after some time, there was the game.

Maybe they’ll only release 360 version in western territories, like a lot of companies do, since 360 is not popular at all in japan.

  • Luna Kazemaru

Still waiting on Chrono phantasm people.

    • DesmaX

Can’t believe I actually read the title of the news as “Chrono Phantasm”.
      I feel so silly now

  • fireemblembeast

I’ll patiently wait for Clone Phantasma :)
    [s] I hope it has dual audio[/s]
Even I could care less if a spin-off minigame has DA…

  • Go2hell66

    Awesome news

  • TheExile285

I hope they make a Vita version of Chrono Phantasma

  • Solomon_Kano

ASW out for world domination? Well, I guess I’ll be helping fund that even more with them establishing a western presence.

So happy that they’re getting back around to GG. Having that and BB running at once would be fighting heaven for me.

    • Curan_Altea

A new Guilty Gear would be great, it’d look great with modern visuals. A cross over with BlazBlue would be amazing, if only so I could devastate Guilty Gear characters with Ragna.

      • Solomon_Kano

I’d love that. Tearing through BB’s cast with Faust would be beyond awesome.

        • Curan_Altea

Faust is the best character for making your friends yell at you to stop, at least in my experience.
Ragna is by far the best character I have in any fighting game (Yu Narukami is a close second) and I was never very good at Guilty Gear, went to it after BlazBlue actually.

          • Solomon_Kano

Faust had me undefeated against my cousin. Really a great character. Jin was my best in BB, but I haven’t played it in a few years now, so I’m probably awful. In fighters overall… Terry. Terry Bogard.

          • Curan_Altea

Ah that’s a shame. BlazBlue got me into fighting games (about two years ago) so my opinion of it being the best is a little biased. Jin is basically the bane of my existence. God damned ice cars.

I’m awful at King of Fighters. I like the game, I just can’t seem to get it down.

          • Solomon_Kano

I never really bothered with KOF outside of the 3D ones on PS2. Something Impact. I was great with Terry in Mark of the Wolves, Fatal Fury, and Capcom vs SNK 2 though.

Jin was pretty much guaranteed to be my favorite before I even played with him. Ice powers + katana = yes. And then I played with him and became a monster.

  • benhofb

Wow, they seem like they’re really dedicated to the fans! Personally, I would absolutely LOVE it if they released the Kunio-kun games. River City Ransom is the ultimate shiz, so it’d be awesome playing the 3DS sequels/remakes!

  • Nightmesh

Oh so their getting something like AtlusUSA. That’s cool. I wish bigger companies would get sections made just for translating their games to US. *lookingatsquare* Oh they should get a EU one too.

    • Jisgsaw

The way it’s stated, it will serve for both NA and Europe (and Australia ?). Not like Atlus USA.

    • yo1234

I assume you mean square enix? …. but they do have an American branch. 2 to be precise. unless you mean for translations only. And that would just be a waste of resources since a lot of games are brought over anyways. So why build another headquarters?

  • “The US PS3 release of BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma is still TBD.”

Has there even been an announcement about the JPN PS3 release of BB:CP? Last I heard were still at the “it’s planned/in the works” but no date information.

I’m getting the shakes, these BB:CP match videos on YouTube aren’t cutting it anymore, and the new Nu/Lambda combos look so much juicier that BB:CSEX makes me feel hollow inside.

    • cj_iwakura

Not a word for JP either.

  • Eric Harris

what’s that one picture of kunio kun. Is it a river city ransom remake? What system? Japan only I know just curious.

    • Armane

3DS Kunio-kun game, it’s a direct sequel (or another one, lol) to Downtown Nekketsu, i.e. River City Ransom 2.

  • XypherCode

How about Arc’s Kyuukousha no Shojo (Girl of the Old School Building)? Any hope it’ll be localized? xD

  • brian

I remember someone at Aksys mentioning they had goals for world domination.
Could these two be in conspiring with that goal in mind?
I could just be remembering it wrong.

  • AdachiTohru

The questions are not very interesting.

That would be more interesting to ask about Blazblue CP on Vita

    • yo1234

      …. ok

  • Lester Paredes

BRING CHRONO PHANTASMA TO VITA! PLEASE! And, keep up the great work, Arc, you guys are awesome.

  • I’m still wondering when will GGXXAC be released on the UK PSN. It’s been months without any news on it :/

  • MrJechgo

You should have asked if they ever plan to do a Guilty Gear vs BlazBlue crossover game at some points :)

    • Mister_Nep

It’s been stated before that they’re not concerned with a crossover like that until the story of BlazBlue is done.

  • SirRichard

I like that they made the distinction that they aren’t just an American branch, but a general purpose English branch. That’s really encouraging!

  • Mavalex

I’m alright with these guys being our overlords

  • Tails the Foxhound

Ever since the Wii U gamepad was shown I’ve dreamed about playing Guilty Gear 2 Overture on it. Arc System Works should make a new game in this series happen. (Shoot, they need to make a new Guilty Gear happen period, I’ve always like that cast over the BlazBlue one, Tao aside.)
