Infamous: Second Son Is A PS4 Launch Title, Says Sucker Punch Dev.

By Spencer . March 22, 2013 . 3:00pm

infamousinFamous: Second Son is a PlayStation 4 launch title. The game will ship in Q4 2013 according to this resume from Sucker Punch’s rendering programmer. Another Sucker Punch developer notes the 2013 timeline for the game too.

inFamous: Second Sun uses high dynamic range (HDR) imaging for lightning and other graphical effects. The game has a real-time "wetness" and puddle system plus high quality sky and atmosphere effects.

Motion capture work for facial animations is being done at Digital Domain,  a company that made in-game cinematics and teaser trailers for The Darkness II and Gears of War.

Update: The first resume removed the details about the launch timing, but Siliconera has a screencap noting that inFamous: Second Son is said to be a PlayStation 4 launch title.

I’m pretty sure there wasn’t any doubt that it wouldn’t make it by launch. If that was indeed real game footage that they showed during the conference, then it must be very far along. E3 is going to be amazing this year!

  • Spirit Macardi

Making another InFamous game really seems like a shallow cash grab to me, since the series is effectively over. The second game not only concluded Cole’s story, but completely removed any chance of a continuation or even a spin-off.

I’m certain that there will be some major retcons in this game’s story to “explain” how there are still somehow Conduits in the world.

    • Alexander Marquis Starkey

Or they could start a new story. I believe the trailer mention something not conduits.

      • Kamille

I hope it’s kind of a reboot since I haven’t been following inFamous that much. I beat the first game but never played the second one.

    • Reki Honoo

I think that the whole thing about this spin off is trying to make it how it is not entirely like cole’s story. I’m sure they will make a new story, but they wanted to test it with this spinoff.

      • Spirit Macardi

It’s not the lack of Cole that I take issue with, it’s that the ending of the second game literally removed any possibility of a new game. I mean, you don’t get much more of a finite conclusion than: “All super powers are gone for good” x3

        • dragoon_slayer12

I agree. But in a twist, the ray sphere could’ve awaken their dormant powers rather than eliminate them

          • Testsubject909

The ray sphere was still or just fresh off an experimental stage. I’m pretty iffy the equivalent of an (edit: Specialized version aimed towards a specific form of radiation) EMP blast completely eliminates the possibility of new conduits in the near future.

        • DawnWolf

Why are you assuming good Cole’s ending was the canon one? They could have went with evil Cole, in which the conduits survive.

          • I’m sure, like many people, believed that the good ending was canonical when in all actuality, both endings left it open. That lightning bolt at the end sure looked ominous and the feeling I got was “This series is not yet finished.”
Though going into Infamous 2, you could carry over an evil alignment cole if the trophies were unlocked making either ending canonical in the first game.

          • Testsubject909

Even if Cole chose the good ending. They made it pretty damn clear that even if conduits were removed, they’d eventually come back being that it was their next step in evolution.

        • Testsubject909

          No… Replay the game.

(Edit: I’d have put a spoiler warning, but I already warned people up above to just skip all of this if they never finished Infamous.)

All super powers are gone… For now.

It wasn’t a permanent solution. Not unless they perfect the technology and maintain the field of effect… What Cole created was a singular blast, not a maintained grid, if you will.

        • KingRuff

You took a game with two seperate, completely different endings and just assumed the one you like to be canon? Wow, just wow.

    • Fr33Kingdom

I didn’t realize i wanted a new inFamous until the trailer released. I thought i’d be really annoyed if they continued it because cole had two great endings, but this has me really excited. I don’t think they’ll be ignoring the effect cole had on the world.

I can’t call it a shallow cash grab. Survival instinct is a shallow cash grab. If it was a cash grab they’d half-ass the game and hope to make some sales based solely on name. Is bioshock infinite a shallow cash grab? We can call it unnecessary, but maybe we should wait to see more.

    • Infamous is fun and this features a totally different character, powers , city.So yeah!

    • Testsubject909

      Ah…. Eh… You… Okay.

First off: TL;DR: No, they don’t even have to retcon a single thing if done right.

Now… for the longer version to better explain myself.
SPOILERS, don’t want to be spoiled? Avoid his entire thread of comments here and especially mine since I’ma touch heavy on story just to debate. Here, I’ll help you halfway and strike it all out so you can kinda avoid what I say.

Okay, let’s discuss story. The radiation that was emitted from the conduit gene was, yes, wiped or dampened down to the point where it consumed the life of all the conduits in the world in one scenario which is probably the one they’re following. No, it does not mean that they can’t have more conduits in due time, plus there’s always the alternate world or timeline option at hand.

Let’s continue here, if we go with the idea that it’s not a permanent field but rather a singular shockwave, this means that immediately upon completely wiping it off in one go, the possibility of the return of the element that created Conduits returning is not an impossibility. In fact from memory it certainly did not seem like a long term final option but just a delaying of the inevitable evolution of mankind as was presented when choosing between joining with “the beast” or not. To which when people first finished the game, there were heavy theories upon whether or not we had actually faced “the beast”. Moreso theories on whether or not Cole was definitely dead. The lightning strike at the end of the second game’s ending is enough to provide some, perhaps convoluted, means of having Cole return as his lightning based powers is what regenerates him. With the strength of a lightning bolt, there could be some sort of deus ex revival, but considering the already supernatural abilities that are provided by his conduit genes, this isn’t impossible to his undefined physiology.

      • dragoon_slayer12

To touch on your theory, when playing FoB, Bloody Mary is indeed a conduit (although implied). She is hundreds of years old. To throw blasphemyinto the mix , the only other documented conduit is…. Jesus Christ. So the conduit gene is nothing new, and through thousands of years, it never died.

To add to my possibility, with these in mind, the last “natural” conduit was Bloody Mary’s turner (guy who turned her). Cole was activated through the rays sphere (as was everybody else), while Kessler is the only one to naturally “wake up” in current (albeit alternate) times. With seconds son story based on “bio-terrorism”, it is possible that the rays sphere “awakened” a small number of the “deceased” conduits

  • dragoon_slayer12

Oh man, this AND killzone, nice. Hopefully they announce versus XIII as ps4 launch and it’ll officially be the best vg launch ever

    • It will also qualify as a miracle, and you should check outside for flying pigs that day, just to make sure it actually happened.

      • dragoon_slayer12

Remind me to check the weather forecast that week

    • When was the last time a system launched with 3 heavy hitters right off the bat? I can’t think of a single time.

  • Of course it is, until it inevitably get’s delayed a couple months.

Of course, I’ll drop my skepticism if we get do see some pretty-far-along gameplay at E3.

  • Fr33Kingdom

I don’t know if i’ll be picking it up at launch, but inFamous Second Son, Driveclub, and Killzone(hopefully it’s not just good but great) all making it in time for release is really really good.

Infamous festival of blood was designed SO perfectly that i can’t wait to see what they do with Second son.

  • Kris

Welp. I guess I’m buying my PS4 on launch day then.

    • Testsubject909

As for me, time to re-arrange my resume again and double up the job hunt.

      • Kris

I’m sure I’ve got an extra kidney somewhere around here…

        • Detrimont

      Nolan North Watch out.

  • Arnold Stallone

When I see infamous 2 running, with thousands of buildings, cars, people, enemies, all that in real time, with great textures and colors, and then, I see games like FIFA, at 720p only, with a simple grass texture and 22 small characters, or a tiger wood game, with some ugly trees, awful plastic grass, 2 houses and 3 or 4 people, I can only think EA don’t do 1080p on those 2 games, so next gen, they can justify some new versions, saying’ hey, now you can have 1080p , with this console, its great, go grab the game’.

  • Report miss typing “inFamous: Second Sun” . or PS4 will have 2 bad ass title .

  • Pockystix

I need to get around to plying the second game lol

I’m still really excited for potential RPGs. .. Tales of, Level-5 games, etc.

    Deep Down looks great~

  • Isaac Newton

  • artemisthemp

Then I have 1 good Launch title for PS4 :)

  • cameron forsyth

going up against the police? that seems to have some good moral potential within the story. while i’m on that topic: it would be nice if they really changed the karma system to something more deep or interesting although i liked the final boss karma decision in Infamous 2

good and evil isn’t as black and white as the previous games and most games today seem to portray it. a good example of what i would like is with Catherine which had neither choices being ultimately right and reflected more about yourself.

  • The PS4 is going to have an awesome launch line up! I can feel it!

  • TheExile285

  • DoUbLeZz (Lydon)

anyone else got a infamous second son ad and it says the game will be 99.99?

    • Mr_SP

Might be a place-holder price. The ones at the store over here are listed as $30 higher than you’d actually expect them to be.

  • colorblindnightmare

OMFG YES. My wallet is goingf to die from hunger :( Oh well, at least i will be insanely entertained.
