Mega Man 25th Anniversary News From Capcom’s PAX East Panel

By Matt Hawkins . March 22, 2013 . 11:22am

IMG_5438At PAX East’s World of Capcom Panel, Capcom said this will be the first wave of Mega Man announcements for the Blue Bomber’s 25th birthday celebration.

Mega Man 4 (the NES game) is scheduled for release on 3DS Virtual Console on April 25. Mega Man 5‘s release date is tentatively May 16, and Mega Man 6 is slated for June. Capcom is looking into what other Mega Man games can be released too and someone from the crowd shouted "Mega Man Soccer!" and a representative replied "done!" in a joking way.

As for Mega Man merchandise, the Mega Buster USB stick is one of the fastest things selling from the Capcom Unity Store. A new collectable figure will be released this summer at San Diego Comic-Con in limited numbers. Another figure has Mega Man and Mega Man X together to represent X’s upcoming anniversary, which will be an exclusive on the Capcom store.

A new series of Japanese art books will be localized including Mega Man R20+ which is due in the second half of 2013.

Next month is the crossover with Archie’s Sonic the Hedgehog comics. This starts with Mega Man #24 next month and it spans into 12 parts. There will be a free primer on Free Comic Book Day on May 4. Soundtracks for classic Mega Man games will also be available for fans to purchase digitally too.

Finally, Capcom said they have heard the calls of Mega Man fans and are "working behind the scenes" on something new, but want to make sure that they have something before they announce anything.

  • JonathanisPrimus

SMH @ Joystiq reporting a new game was confirmed

  • Luna Kazemaru

    lol Joystiq

  • MikeTxn

Oh god, I remember Megaman Soccer. Protoman and Enker were extremely broken. Imagine a sequel, featuring all the robot masters with special shots akin to Inazuma Eleven.

    • anthony apduhan

Or an Inazuma Eleven vs Megaman game just like what Capcom and Level-5 did with Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney… I wonder what will Tenma say if he saw Megaman.

      • MikeTxn

Mmm, maybe he would think that he’s in another movie, or at least surprised that they are in “Kenshin Armor” during the whole match.

But, if not a crossover, at least it should be produced by Level-5.

  • dragoon_slayer12

This is a good show a faith (in some ways) to the MM fan base. Granted its an anniversary thing, at least they are showing they have the blue bomber in mind. I wonder if legends will get a remake (yevon the shooting mechanic needs updating).

    • Solomon_Kano

I’d settle for the first two and Tron’s game getting put on PSN. That’s loooong overdue, unless there’s some hidden snag.

  • Brian Carty

…ok, I know it’s a 25th anniversary thing and that’s typically silver, but a statue of the BLUE Bomber(s) in “classy silver finish”? C’mon…

    • diversionArchitect

Lol now I’m going to have to paint it! Although I’d rather have a statue of just X characters =P

  • Godman

I like how Capcom is being cautious, getting everything together before announcing whatever they have.

Other than revealing something, build up hype, find a problem and then inevitably cancel it.

To me the problem isn’t that it might get cancel(pretty sure it won’t), but what exactly is it

    • Brion Valkerion

Yeah they learned the lesson of why Devs never show games from the very start, the hard way. MML3 was probably like ~5% done and fans acted like they slaughtered a small kitten on live tv. I mean hell Mega Man himself wasn’t even in the game yet haha.

      • Sorry, 5% done? That’s really an odd estimate. I’d put the completion rate at about 30% at least. The physics engine, gameplay, characters have been mostly laid out. I wouldn’t call that 5%. What’s left is probably more boss designs, more levels, advanced game mechanics, game balance, maps, retopologizing the high-res 3D models so the game won’t lag…etc.

  • Zonic505

There’s another MM statue, but with X!? Oh man, now I want both of those statues.

    • If we wait a bit more, there might be another one with not only Megaman and X, but also Megaman.EXE and Volnutt, along with Aile and Ashe in their ZX forms!

  • Laith Rem

I repeat myself with “ZX sequel pls”

    • ZX is super niche, though, and the anniversary in question is Mega Man’s, not Zero’s or the disembodied ghost sprites of Zero and X’s.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love another ZX title as well, but given the games’ reception and niche status, I actually expect Legends 3 to happen for reals before we get a follow-up to Advent.

  • Shadowman

I want every Mega-man Battle Network for the 3DS

    • I agree whole-heartedly.

    • But Capcom doesn’t even care about Mega Man, those bastards have embarrassed him on Street Fighter X Tekken and disrespected its creator. I for one will not give CRAPCOM any more money for a game series they don’t deserve.

      • Which in turn will accomplish nothing and just further feed their idea that Mega Man isn’t worth their time because there is a perceived lack of interest and they don’t make much off of it, resulting in fewer Mega Man games until he fades into obscurity entirely. So that’s a great plan.

        • Raycon Prime

Given the direction Capcom has been going lately, that might be for the best.

      • Alexander Marquis Starkey

It was Inafune’s idea to use BBA Megaman for the game in the first place. Gave it to them before he left Capcom so there is no disrespect to Keiji Inafune.

      • LaserVision

Chill out. Bad box art Mega Man was going to be in Mega Man Universe, which as I recall was directed by Keiji Inafune until it was cancelled. Because he, unlike certain fans, had a sense of humor.

  • Reki Honoo

I hope that they can release the starforce and battle network game son the 3ds eshop

  • DesmaX

hahaha, I kinda enjoyed Megaman Soccer when I was a kid (Even though I didn’t understand how to play it)

  • Cephrien

I’d love to have a Megaman on the vita.
    That’d be tight. =w=

Maybe the next Maverick Hunter X can be on the Vita.
Or even a Megaman Zero remake. +.+

  • “working behind the scenes” eh? Let me guess, Capcom, you’ll release videos, get everyone excited for it, announce a release date, and then cancel it a few weeks before release.

    • Kaihedgie

Get over it already. It’s been over two years now. Let it friggin’ go

      • Yeah, you’re right. I guess it would be better to have no Megaman than to have one without Inafune’s input. They’d probably try to westernize it, give him a “dark” backstory, and make it a cover based shooter.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

I’m in the mood for a new Mega Man series. How about making it wild west themed? lol
I don’t remember how much those MM9 Press Kits were, but I’m want to get that statue as well.
I remember when Star Force 3 came out, I bought both special editions for $50 each. Looks like my efforts to support it failed…
Though Capcom Store is Digital River… and I had to go through that Ni no Kuni Wizard Edition crisis…

  • I want a Non-8 Bit Megaman Game

  • Brandonmkii

They could just make Powered Up! 2 and I could die a happy man.

  • Göran Isacson

Welp… here’s to hoping there’s life in you yet, Blue Buddy. I don’t know if I dare dream any more, but I really, really want to.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Megaman Battle and Chase 2 please? This time, you can include X series Maverick too.^_^

  • TempestTwin

Great, more ports to games we have already played and that are nothing new. Your doing a great job on screwing around a character that was meant to be your main mascot capcom.

    • Just Tim

It doesn’t help that Americans are necro for zombies, to the point it seriously gave me the impression that Capcom will replace Classic Mega Man with Nemesis as its mascot by virtue of:

–Resident Evil, making more money than the MM franchise
–Classic Mega Man, being missing in action in Marvel vs Capcom 3, while undead-related characters like Hsien-ko (ルピンコのワイフ), Frank West, and Nemesis became playable characters; it doesn’t help that MvC3 has been giving too many Marvel Zombies references in Earth 96169.
–Given the zombie rage…in America, Nemesis is being fondly remembered as the most memorable Bio-Organic Weapon of the Resident Evil franchise, while Mega Man is being remembered as an 80s icon and not to mention the executive meddling in the 90s, the alternate universe milking *cough STARFORCE cough* in the 2000s, and the 2010’s no new Mega Man franchise game debacle…

  • Solomon_Kano

I wonder if it’ll be outsourced? That’d be pretty sweet. I mean, they’ve got the excellent WayForward on DuckTales Remastered, why not give em a go at the Blue Bomber? They’d probably make a killer X game.

Alternately, ASW would be pretty sick. Mega Man with Hard Corps visuals would be godly.

  • anthony apduhan

Any more updates for Project X Zone still waiting for that game for Megaman X.

  • Isaac Newton

    It’s a Reboot!

  • Theofratus ‘Geese’ Lester

    Mega Man X9…
