What If Shin Megami Tensei If… Was Ported To iPhone?

By Spencer . March 22, 2013 . 4:36pm

mzl.alxmwyry.320x480-75Shin Megami Tensei If… was a step towards the popular Persona series. Atlus made this Super Famicom game as a what if storyline imagining the events in Shin Megami Tensei never happened. You play as a high school student that enters the demon realm when you find out a fellow student declares himself to be the Demon lord. You get to travel with a human friend in Shin Megami Tensei If… which changes the storyline.

Atlus ported Shin Megami Tensei If… to PsOne and now you can get the role playing game for iOS too. Unfortunately, it’s only in Japanese and has a clunky virtual handlheld interface layered over the game.

You can get the only portable version of Shin Megami Tensei If… for 1,200 yen ($13) on iTunes.

    That title confuses me deeply

    • DarthSithZero

Same happens to me I only know Shin Megami Tensei because I only played the Persona 3 & 4

      • benhofb

Oh man, but there is soo much more than just P3 and 4!

        • They aren’t even SMT titles (Persona series that is).

          • benhofb

You’ll anger a lot of people talking like that, sonny. :p

In essence, the original Persona (1 and the 2 duology) have the Shin Megami Tensei subtitle and it actually applies. In the more traditional SMT games, we all know demons can be summoned by anyone with a comp. And in the original Persona games, multiple Personas acted as demons without a fancy wrist-computer. You got them and fused them in ways similar to the other SMT games. I don’t agree that the Persona series as a whole is not SMT, but 3 and 4 not to some degree. Although, one could elaborate and say Persona 3 and 4 are just a more refined SMT, which they technically are. They carry over many of the same elements such as fusion and skills, but they also add more things into the mix. Ya’know, like a true spin-off does.

          • M’iau M’iaut

I agree that especially stateside they should all be considered part of the same ‘family’. But in @auragar:disqus ‘s defense, in the past when the whole Persona and SMT debate has come up, many of the angriest voices claimed those liking P3 or P4 were not ‘true fans’.

          • Adrián Anthony

Actually, Persona is Under Megami Ibunroku, not Shin Megami Tensei.

          • M’iau M’iaut

Stateside the series has followed a SMT: Persona naming. Even with 3 and 4.

          • superdry

The first two on the PS1 didn’t though (Revelations: Persona and Persona 2 Eternal Punishment), but that was before SMT became well known in the US. It’s brand recognition really to put all related games under the SMT moniker and I think that makes sense.

I do wonder why SMT isn’t part of the Persona 4 Golden name though.

          • There is all kinds of debate on this subject, and it would quickly get out of hand to further discuss it (as it already seems to have done). >_<:

If… has my favourite MegaTen protag. (Tamaki)

  • brian

A new retro port, likely never going to be localized.

    • benhofb

Not to be risque, but the original “If…” is receiving a fan translation by Aeon Genesis.

      • ninjapresident

Oh, really? I wasn’t aware of that! Sweet! Now I just need to get around to playing 1 and 2…

      • hadjimurad

not to be not risque, but you weren’t being risque.

        • benhofb

          My bad…

  • Suriel Cruz

What ‘If’ we get(ALREADY!) news about Persona V?… xD

    • I believe Persona games use a number instead of roman numerals for their titles, and this isn’t really the topic to be discussing this. Sure it is Atlus, but not even the same series.

      • Guest

Who cares if I use a Roman Number… that! won’t actually affect the fact that is a Persona game, Jesu’s!!! Another thing… my COMMENT was NOT EVEN A THEME TO DISCUSS, it was more of a RANDOM COMMENT. I was using the ‘If’ word to say that in a funny way. -sigh- Is not that I’m letting them know that I want the game NOW or that I need the game, they can release news about it WHENEVER THEY WANT.

  • benhofb

Ya’know, the 3DS would be the perfect platform for Atlus to release the original SMTs on. SMT 1, 2, and If… all used that small-dungeon crawl box at the top of the screen then party info on the bottom. They could re-do the originals where te dungeon crawl screen is on the top and then party info on the bottom! Ah… I can dream, can’t I?

    • MinamitsuMurasa

Personally i want a full remake they could use the SMT4 engine to make it or whatever I just want to play it!
I really want to play this game after reading about it I think it’s really interesting

      • benhofb

They could, but I get the feeling that’d be a huge project for them. Either way, the 3DS would be the ideal platform to release the originals on because of IV. It’d be a big hype-getter and a good oppertunity to give hard-core fans the classics in the series along with the newest iteration.

        • MinamitsuMurasa

I completely agree with you but I find it hard to believe that US Atlus would localize ports of an SNES games on the 3DS

And yes I know its a huge project for Atlus but I’m pretty sure nobody knows what Atlus is going to work on after SMT4(Persona 5 has been announced a long time ago and i dont dont think they will only work on P5) So anything is possible after SMT4 gets released….or at least thats what I like to think..

          • They will obviously (and probably have been) work on Persona 5. They don’t work on one game only though, so yes… who knows what will come after SMTIV, Persona 5, and DeSu2:BR.

          • benhofb

Aaand hopefully all the DeSu attention will lead into DeSu 3 (which will probably become a SRPG equivalent to Persona…)! Other than that though, Atlus could have absolutely ANYTHING up their sleeves.

          • I dunno if there will be ever be a DeSu3 but it would be interesting to see.

    • Shane Guidaboni

I would love for that to happen so I don’t have to play a weirdly translated rom of the first two games.

    • Barrylocke89

This has been my pipe dream ever since I saw Atlus go back to first person dungeon crawler Megatens with SJ. Will it happen? Probably not, but I can dream with you…

    • EvE

a smt game (maybe smt 1?) and ever persona 1 WAS going to come out for the 3ds

      • LynxAmali

        Those are placeholders, actually.

It’s just “in case we feel like it.” and it was never confirmed to be Persona 1 either.

  • Guest

but, it’ll most likely happen TT u TT

  • Strain42

We didn’t get SMT1 or 2 in English when they were ported to iOS, so I can’t imagine we’d get if… either. It’d be super special awesome if we did but…eh, what are you gonna do?

  • $36598391

Oh joy this one is in Japanese too….

  • ragingmerifes

What if Aeon Genesis finished the translation too?

    • benhofb

His website has said %80 since last year, but he’s a busy man. Translation is done, but romhacking is apparently taking more time than expected.

      • M’iau M’iaut

Let’s be careful talking too far down the road of roms and hacks, even on a much older title such as this one. Thanks.

        • benhofb

          My bad… too much info.

  • TheBlackKnight3

I think Atlus feels they’ve learned a lot since these games came out. They don’t want to spend to much time on things they think of as lesser than what they can do now, like SMT IV. I think they just want to move away from what SMT was in general in the 90’s and continue the series in the vein of Nocturne and Persona 3. And I’m fine with that.

  • I wonder, If… we are ever going to see a release of this title.

  • NimbusStev

I would be super excited to see if… get an English release… but please let it be on something better than the iPhone. x_x Even Android would be acceptable because then we could at least play it on the Ouya. I just… don’t like playing games on cell phones.
