New Etrian Odyssey Info Coming This Week

By Ishaan . March 25, 2013 . 1:30pm

This week’s Famitsu magazine will bring news on the updated version of Devil Survivor 2 for the 3DS, but will also contain news related to the Etrian Odyssey series, according to Atlus’ Twitter account in Japan.

Additionally, Etrian Odyssey series director Shigeo Komori tweets that the next Etrian Odyssey game he’s working on is approaching completion.

“It has been approximately 3 years since EOIII,” Komori tweets. “As the director, I feel the game I am developing is finally approaching completion.” Komori goes on to say that his new game is a project that experiments with new things with the goal of creating a “new” Etrian Odyssey.

In case you’re wondering why Komori mentioned Etrian Odyssey III and not Etrian Odyssey IV, it’s because III was the last game in the series that Komori directed. Etrian Odyssey IV was directed by Trauma Team director Daisuke Kanada, since Komori himself was involved with other projects at the time, which is something he mentioned during the game’s Iwata Asks interview.

Oh snap! Could this be the fabled use for the teased “future titles” saved games option?

    • Possibly, but who didn’t guess we’d get EO5.

  • benhofb

I gotta lady boner harder den steel for dis!

    • Barrylocke89

We all do Ben…we all do.

  • AuraGuyChris

Is it an Etrian Odyssey with…
    *Le gasp*

    A PLOT?!

    • That isn’t that big of a change I am thinking of a completely different genre.

      • Pombar

The guy who made EO1 immediately left and made the more traditional world-map-having SNES-style JRPG (but with EO-style classes, skills and battles) 7th Dragon, which we never got in the West because the universe hates us.
So it wouldn’t be the first time!

        • He made 7th dragon?! Makes me hate the people at Sega? or whoever it is that makes this series more.

          • Pombar

The EO1 dude, yeah. He made EO then left the company and made 7th Dragon for Sega.

          • Nice.

    • AkuLord3

Its not about the story but about the adventure…besides the games have plots (Especially 4 has more story moments than the other games) it just doesn’t circle around it as much as other rpgs do

      • Phlo

Yeah, I feel the plots in the Etrian Odyssey series tend to be underrated because they don’t use a thousand words when a hundred can tell the same story.

        • Suicunesol

They might be able to tell the same story, but not in the same way. I’m willing to bet a more fleshed out world would have done wonders when I first tried out EO4. I only played the demo, so maybe I’m not qualified to talk, but I do know that I REALLY wish I was able to explore the actual city. Tharsis seemed quite labyrinthine, and it would have been awesome to explore it and actually talk to some interesting characters, giving the city a little life given that it’s the home base. But the city was reduced to a small handful of menu options.

  • xXDGFXx

More Etrian Odyssey. Holy fuck! I am not ready! I still need to finish the fourth one!

  • AkuLord3

OMG i was just thinking of new game especially how well 4 did (in Japan though it sold better than i thought in US) Must…control…FEELINGS

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

Nice! I beat 4 and I’m ready for more!

  • SetzerGabbiani

If this is indeed an EO5 announcement I hope they expand the enemy roster to include some omitted enemies from the first few games. Perhaps they will redo the first few games with the new engine and system upgrades they used for EOIV (I freaking love this game). Whatever it is, keep the EO series coming; I love the challenge and customization options.

Or is this going to be an EO sub-series? EO monsters: Landskenechts’ Wonder Land.

  • $29082171

Does he mean ”new Etrian Odyssey” or ”new game that is like Etrian Odyssey” (dungeon crawler)?

  • TruSpindash

I have yet to finish 4 yet but I’m already excited to hear news about the future of the series.

  • DesmaX

So… I started Unchained Blades recently, and it’s kicking my butt. And grinding doesn’t really do much

Is Etrian Odyssey easier, or even harder?

    • I played Unchained Blades and while a good game it felt like it had a lot of fake difficulty if that’s understandable. EO4 felt just right and much more engaging but that’s just my 2 cents.

    • Adam Zaorski

First of all EO IV is a much, much better game. With better game mechanics, richer world, better art etc.

EO IV sucks you in with it’s depth, and Unchained Blades well, is…ok..I guess, just ok.

      • DesmaX

        Hm… I see…

Know any better games for the PSP?

  • Draparde

oh, wow. i still need to grab 4 D: …. i think i’ll get on that soon >_<

  • puchinri

    Ah, man. Seriously? But we’re still struggling through IV. ;u;
I am excited to see what the one directed by him will look like though~.

  • I’ll repeat what I said elsewhere. I hope it’s a spin-off where we can actually see the character models and a storyso we get some character development. I LOVE the character design, art and music for this series and it feels wasted on a first person dungeon crawler. I’m not saying the main EO series should become something else, people love EO because it is hard as hell dungeon crawler. I’m just throwing a wishlist out there.

I like everything about the games except the game. An RPG with real time combat or some sort of adventure game or SRPG would be awesome.

  • Ethan_Twain

Well that’s a little unexpected. I suppose we can expect an Etrian Odyssey V coming from the director of the original trilogy to be a little bit tougher than EO IV which was by far the easiest of the games to date.

I’m not complaining about that mind, I feel like EO IV is exactly as hard as it needs to be.

It’s also a little bit unexpected that Etrian Odyssey is getting big enough to support multiple projects from different directors in development simultaneously. Sure we have split teams doing Call of Duty or Assassin’s Creed… but Etrian Odyssey? I suppose the franchise has done nothing but grow… but just where is the glass ceiling for a first person grindy dungeon crawler? I’ve gotta imagine Atlus is near scraping it by now.

Lastly, a question. To those of you who played DS Etrian Odyssey games and also Etrian Odyssey IV, what are the things that made EO IV distinct that you wouldn’t necessarily expect to see in a new game coming from the original director? What are things you’ll welcome back?

  • Deep Eyes

Etrian Odyssey for Vita? n_n…. I want to play it u.u…

    • tubers

Yeah I was thinking that too xD

  • alundra311

    Etrian Odyssey U? ;)

  • Adam Zaorski

I like EO IV better than previous ones, so I’d prefer to EO IV team to to make EO V to be honest…

  • B-but I haven’t even started on EO4 yet! Damn it Europe, we need to up our game more ladies and gents.
Seriously, if this really is an EO5 announcement, then no amount of preparation can get me ready for this. So happy :)
