Demons Can Evolve And Teach You New Abilities In Shin Megami Tensei IV

By Sato . March 28, 2013 . 1:30pm

Atlus recently revealed more on how demons can level up and grow in Shin Megami Tensei IVYour befriended demons in Shin Megami Tensei IV will become stronger by winning fights and leveling up.

By leveling up, the demons will increase in attack, health and various other stats. They will also learn new skills, which will be crucial in fights as demons with more skills will have more chances of hitting enemy weaknesses.

Additionally, there are some demons that will evolve into completely different demons when they level. This feature is known as the ‘High Level Up’.

Demons can also teach you new skills through a feature known as the “Whisper Event”. These events will occur over time after leveling up your demon buddies. Learning several different demon abilities will play a big part in helping you become more powerful.

Shin Megami Tensei IV is slated to be released on May 23rd for Nintendo 3DS.

Other than Whisper, which is kinda like skill cards(Golden way, thinking of that coffee shop) in their own right, but for the player. It’s Nocturne again. Nice!

    • MrTyrant

Yeah I love those talk when demon suggest which skill they were to change.

Uh Oh inb4 SMT becomes Nintendo Hard .).

    • Danjon Gai

      Isn’t it already?

      • http://twitter.com/ValeFalkren Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

        SMT IV specifically.

  • MikeTxn

    What?! Mara is evolving?!

  • kool_cid414

I’m really curious to see this mechanic in action.

  • benhofb

Soo… pretty much like all the other SMT games…

    • Zeik56

Nocturne is the one that had evolving demons as far as I recall. I guess Persona is sort of an exception, but only party members in P3/P4 had Persona’s that legitimately evolved.

      • Zeik56

No wait, P2 also had mutations.

      • Detrimont

the devil survivor games also have evolving, as does strange journey. and i think i remember some random personae that just randomly change at certain levels(not sure though, probably doesnt happen)

        • Zeik56

I don’t remember that in Devil Survivor at all, unless it was in DS2 and not DS1. I vaguely kinda sorta remember it in Strange Journey, but I feel like I’m really just thinking of Nocturne, since the only one that comes to mind is High Pixie.

          • Detrimont

some demons in DS(in both) randomly mutate, pixie does(but pixie does in most games

    • puchinri

I was thinking that it sounded like Nocturne, glad I wasn’t misremembering. I’ve never played other main SMT games to know if it happens in them though (and I can’t remember for SJ. . .).

    • Isaac Newton

Yeah some of features are SO NEW LOL

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

    Soooooooooooo Pokemon?

    • Zeik56

If only Pokemon trainers learned moves from their Pokemon.

  • kmantle

I wonder if the ‘high level up’ can be stopped by pressing ‘B’

    • benhofb

Well, usually things like a spell change can be stopped, but IIRC, mutations and changes can’t really. Most of the time, except in Persona 2, the mutated/changed demon retains the skills it already knows, so it shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

Samael my man used to be on my team in Nocturne near the end and on new game plus. Also used it on P3, FES, Portable, 4 and Golden.

Localize this and Devil Survivor 2 3D and all my money is yours Atlus. Easy money, make it happen.

    • Detrimont

if you haven’t seen the article, i’m sorry to break it to you, all the gameplay is still on the bottom screen, so it’s not 3d

  • Lester Paredes

Shades of pokemon? Well, it already had a ‘catch ‘em all’ feel. Sadly, now that they are incorporating more of the pokemon esque evolving aspects, people will say they ripped it off. though, I think SMT came first…

    • Detrimont

demons have always had levels, and only certain demons “evolve”. also, it’s like that in a lot of series, not just pokemon,

      • Lester Paredes

I realize that not just pokemon has that aspect. However, pokemon is the most popular game with that aspect. Hence my reasoning that people, with no prior knowledge, will make the pokemon assumption here in the US.

        • Zeik56

They already kinda do. The series has already had evolving in the past though. That’s not new.

The original Megami Tensei was released 1987 and I believe it was the first monster catching game. It predated final fantasy, in fact. The next big monster catching game to see release (entirely possible I’m unaware of other popular japanese games) was Dragon Quest V in 92 I believe.

      • Lester Paredes

I thought so, but I couldn’t be sure without a simple google search, that I was apparently too lazy to do. Damn… what does it say about me when I’m too lazy to search on google?

    • komiko12

Odd. Pokemon is also the first thing that came to mind when I read the title. I think that’s the first time I saw SMT demons evolve.

      • Lester Paredes

Pokemon is also the first game where I saw ‘monsters’ evolve also. Granted, RPG’s did that, but it was incremental and not such a drastic change.

  • cj_iwakura

Weird that an iconic Soul Hackers boss is in SMT IV. Azazel isn’t just some casual demon.

    • Detrimont

he was in P2 eternal punishment, also in Kyuyaku Megami Tensei, and in all the devil children and demikids games

    Tht dragon-snake-thing look kinda cute ^w^;

  • هاكو ممممممممم

why is there arabic writing on that red demon ? i mean is he actually saying that it makes no sense

  • Ali

the pic with the Arabic words on it surprised me. it said “Arab” in the first line and “Medical care” on the other. what does that means for the game?

    • هاكو ممممممممم

well the arabic words on screen are saying, arab عرب and then we have such as you said medical care الرعاية الطبية well it seems like both writing refers to the same thing hhhhh
