Hands-On Muramasa Rebirth: You Can Remap Controls On The Vita Version

By Spencer . March 28, 2013 . 11:20am

Aksys brought a build of Muramasa Rebirth with English text already in the game to GDC. Muramasa Rebirth calls the two gameplay modes “Legend” (easy difficulty) and “Chaos” (hard difficulty). In the Wii version these were translated as “Muso” and “Shura”.

I started by playing the second boss fight where Momohime clashes with a flaming wheel. The graphics are indeed more vivid in the PlayStation Vita version, but the boss fight was the same. The wheel hovers over the ground and you need to stay in the air to hit it. One of the swords Momohime had on her shot a purple blast of energy up from the ground. I started my combos using this sword’s secret art and then switching blades to use a spinning slash.

I explored the world by loading a saved game from Kisuke’s story. Vanillaware’s art style looks great, but the one thing that was kind of annoying was using the X button assigned for jumping and talking. In the Japanese version, the circle button is the talk button. I asked Aksys about this, and the good news is you can remap all of the buttons in Muramasa Rebirth via the options menu. You can also assign a button to do a dodge roll, which is by default a double tap either left or right.

Muramasa Rebirth is slated for release this summer in North America. The game will have four extra characters available as downloadable content and producer Yoshifumi Hashimoto explained to Siliconera exclusively how these new characters work.

Has anyone played the Wii version on the Wii U. I’ve been impressed how well the Wii U upscales Wii games.

This might looks pretty good. Smash Brothers looks fantastic.

I thought the Wii-u didn’t upscaled Wii games at all?

      • Kevin Tan

It upscales them to the native resolution you set the Wii-U at. So Wii games and VC games are upscaled to 1080p

      • PuddlesPuddles

Any HD console that plays SD content will upscale the image in order to fit it on an HDTV. That’s what upscaling is – it’s nothing fancy.

Im fine with the old controls just long as i can map my jump button :)

  • I’ve had the figure of Momohime for a while. Time to play the game :)

Hm, iirc in the original you dodge rolled by crouching and pressing left/right or by blocking and crouching the pressing left/right. I’m fine with the original controls. It’ll be fun to replay this again. I wonder if there’s a quick way to refight all the bosses because in the original, you could refight Momohime’s bosses with Kisuke and vice versa, but you had to run through the whole level again.

i gotta say, playing old games with the vita feels great. because games like: the legacy of kain (soul reaver), gods eater burts, and parasite eve (both one and two) allow you to re-map all of the buttons. so this is definitely a plus for me, can’t wait!!.

    My Vita is ready

    • Surgeon of Death

I have never played this game. But I want it so bad on my vita, it feels as though a tiny piece of my soul is dying each day I don’t have it.

      • If you’ve never played it and you already own a Vita, you should definitely give it a go. I don’t say this about many games, but Muramasa’s one of those things that you keep coming back to, every couple of years.

Music to my ears. I hope they can at least release a demo sometime soon.

Glad to hear controls are customizable this time around, especially with the jump button being X. Also, confirmed on JoyStiq:

“Aksys will also offer a pre-order bonus for early Muramasa Rebirth commitment, plus a limited edition: the standard edition will run $39.99, while the limited edition will cost $59.99.”

I want to know what’s in the LE so bad.

Glad to hear they they fixed the jump issue of the wii version, too bad for the DLC though

  • Lester Paredes

    I am ready!

More games need the ability to remap your controls however you want it.
