Final Fantasy X HD Remaster Screenshots Show PS2 And PS3 Comparison

By Ishaan . April 1, 2013 . 6:00pm

We’ve got screenshots of Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, showing off a comparison between the original PlayStation 2 game and the PlayStation 3’s HD Remaster version. Take a look at the comparison screens below, followed by a mix of other older screens and a couple of new ones.

Read more stories about & & & on Siliconera.

  • Tidus kinda looks odd in the remastered. They changed the angle of his eyebrows and narrowed his eyes too much.

    • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro
      • Sakurazaki

He looks even more like Meg Ryan, imo.

        • Peeka Chu

Nailed it. I was trying to play “whose plastic surgery am I looking at”, without much success.

    • Chrystofax

Yeah, I agree, I think they should left his face alone

    • Good, now it doesn’t look like he tweezes them anymore.

    • Vesperion

….He kinda looks like a mannequin

    • Now he’s suspicious!

      Or Asian.

      • MrSirFeatherFang

They should make his hair black again lol

        • Testsubject909

          For a moment there…

I read this as “him” instead of “his hair”

          • MrSirFeatherFang

That’s a good idea. Should get people to buy it again.

    • gamerdude

When was Tidus ever NOT Asian looking?
What does disappoint me though is that they re-did the geometry of the face but the rest looks just as low poly as it ever was.
Like that hood that’s supposed to be of soft material looks sharp like it’s folded out of paper.

Even remodeling the ENTIRE cast of characters wouldn’t have been too much to hope for considering that this has been in development for ages.

Just seems like they didn’t actually do that much and waited just for an appropriate release window.

Along with FFV it seems like SE has even less respect for the games that made them great than ever before whereas the new and lukewarm XIII gets three sequels that pretty much scramble the story into a stew.

      • Tien Ron

it’s just a remaster not some super remake with awesome graphics, please stop having these high expectations square said from the beginning this is just a HD remake they really didn’t have to do this you know….

    • Kenny Loh

well, i don’t see any problems, don’t complain much, we want that HD remaster already, if you guys keep complain $quare enix will delay the game again.

  • Heartless ㅤ

Wow, this site is like a month late lol.

    • Aurizen

This is late, I even emailed them links to the news and they never write an article on it. they haven’t even shown the interview which was a week ago with the producer.

    • MrSirFeatherFang

Maybe cause compared to other releases this year, this is a brand new remake/port game with added MEGA features with a gigantic budget :D
Or maybe Siliconera and SE had some sort of secret argument that we don’t know of. Kind of like this
Ishaan: We got secret FFvXIII info, let’s share it!
Spencer: Who says we’re Nintendo Microsoft biased?
SE: We’ve caught you. Put yo hands up and drop the evidence. From now on any news pertaining to our company must be posted a month later to when you receive it.
      Ishaan: I am disappoint SE
      Spencer: This was expected

    • Farid Belkacemi

Please, don’t be that guy :)

  • Vesperion

    Such a improvement. Looks good!

  • Jahred Down

I was going to wait and experience FFX for the first time on PS3, but it doesn’t look THAT much better. Think I will play the PS2 version for now.

    • Testsubject909

The advantages I can tell you about the PS3 version is that:
FFX and FFX-2 comes packed together.
Both are based on the International version.

The international version was not made available in NA, I don’t know about EU but I don’t think they got it either.

      • axelfire250

If I remember correctly, the EU ver of X was the international ver. Not sure about X-2

      • Pretty sure the International version of the game is the one that was initially released in the EU (back in the days when games routinely had “PAL Bonuses” to make up for the delay in localization between regions); that’s why it’s “international”.

  • Ben Sylvia

So they made everyone’s heads thinner?

    • Testsubject909

No, his head looks fairly the same in size, the main image you can compare just has a bit more of a zoom out for the HD one.

  • DarthSithZero

I see a lots of polygons on Lulu’s breasts

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

      The power of the cell

    • Swaggermuffin

      Stop staring at them

  • phangtom

Tidus looks better in the PS2 version…

    • DarthSithZero

I knew i wasnt the only one who thought that

    • Pyrotek85

Agreed, I like the design better, despite the lesser detail.

      • Testsubject909

        Sometimes less is more.

    • Zeik56

I thought something looked a little off when I first saw the HD screens, but now I can see why. I won’t say the new models are bad, but I think I prefer the PS2 models.

    • Gideon de Groodt

Indeed, I’m with you on that.
It’s like.. the HD version looks.. like a doll and the fact that it’s like Tidus is now looking at his nose or at least.. he’s looking down somewhere.

  • Spirit Macardi

I’m still hoping for some improvements in voice work. That’s the area where the original FFX truly suffers, not so much the graphics. Especially poor John DiMaggio, he deserved much better treatment… like blackjack, and hookers.

    • ZEROthefirst

Sadly like most HD remakes, as I’m sure this will be no exception, the only things they touch up are the visuals. Of course this and Wind Waker HD are the only HD remakes I’ve seen that are a huge difference from the originals.

      • Pyrotek85

It’s understandable, it would be costly to get some or all the cast to record again, and/or get new ones.

        • GaiunxWolfenX

i may be mistaken (or was hallucinating hoping squeenix fix the ridiculous VO) but in the teaser doesn’t tidus’ voice sounds different? been ages since i played ffx so i could have forgotten how bad they sounded

          • Pyrotek85

They could have remastered the audio, especially if they have the original samples. It’s just that doing new recordings is another thing entirely.

          • ZEROthefirst

Audio has probably been re-done in 5.1 True HD or something along those lines. It’s kind of like Tekken going HD or moving up from PS1 it sounds so different that you think it’s new. But for all we know Square Enix has re-done the VAs or at least some of them.

      • I’m not exactly seeing the huge difference. FF10HD is pretty much just an HD port of the original with slightly redesigned character models, kind of like Ocarina of Time 3D. The screenshots of Wind Waker HD, on the other hand, look (for better or worse) like a completely different game compared to the original.

Also it’s pretty ironic that (to my knowledge) the only HD remake so far that’s had totally re-recorded voice acting was the Silent Hill collection, which was seemingly the one time where no one wanted it. I’m still trying to wrap my head around why Konami bothered redubbing both of those games (only to include the original voices again after a fan shitstorm) but just couldn’t be assed to rework the genuinely terrible voiceovers for their Zone of the Enders collection.

All in all, though, I gotta say I think Final Fantasy X is given an unfairly bad rap in the voice acting department. Sure it’s not, like, Hollywood caliber, but tbh I don’t think it’s really any worse in quality than, say, the early Metal Gear Solid games. Though it’s been years since I played FF10, so maybe I’m remembering it more kindly than it deserves.

        • ZEROthefirst

I’m not saying the VAs in FFX are bad in any way, and honestly I’ve never played FFX, I went 1-9 and then tried 13 and quit about 20 mins in, so I can’t judge FFX’s VAs other then the infamous Tidus laugh clip I see a lot.
Also with the HD remake of this I know it’s not like Wind Waker being basically entirely redone and an actual HD remake, but this compared to others HD remakes is a big difference. Considering most HD remakes are slight SD remasters with character models and backgrounds sharpened up a bit. I didn’t think Z.O.E. VAs were bad… who am I kidding the first one did suck, but The 2nd Runner wasn’t bad at least.

          • Tien Ron

please stop saying HD remake it’s a remaster remake is when you start from scratch, a remaster is when you touch up on certain/most parts. you will confuse people

          • ZEROthefirst

They’re the same thing, so please try not to confuse yourself.

    • GVmanX

I never really got what the big issue was with FFX’s English voices. I’ve been replaying the game with the Japanese dub and I have to say that I prefer several of the English actors over their Japanese counterparts.

      Especially Maester Mika’s. Good God.

      • Spirit Macardi

They may be better than the Japanese, though I’d still hesitate to call them good. Granted voice acting in video games was still pretty new back then, and FFX was far better than most at the time of its release. Unfortunately though it simply doesn’t hold up in my eyes, especially when compared to the quality of today’s performances.

If they were to redub the game, maybe with a slight script re-write to make the dialogue more natural, I think it could result in a damn good finished product.

  • fireemblembeast

I kinda like Tidus’ PS2 model more because his hair is “bigger” and “yellower”…

    • Testsubject909

      More flamboyant and vibrant.

    • Altumn

And his slightly open mouth. But at least they didn’t make him white like in dissidia.

  • DrakeClawfang

    Tidus looks….off

    • Testsubject909

My personal gripes with the character aside which is egging my brain on making a joke here…

It’s not so much that he looks off as he looks like he’s slowly dipping into the uncanny valley in one way or the other in the HD version.

The skin is too flawless for example and is slightly more doll like, whereas the previous poorer texture provided a certain amount of dustyness to his skin if you will that made it look more realistic. The HD texture for his skin makes it look very… silicon like.

And that’s basically a similar problem slathered unto the rest of his facial features. His eyes, his hair and his eyebrows for that matter too look like they need an extra push before they cross that border where you drop that sensation of this inch of the uncanny valley.

Might also be a problem with lighting in game considering the illumination on the skin comparatively… That and when you compare the skin color does appear, as you state it for his looks in general, off as well.

  • revenent hell

As much as I liked these games i’ll keep the ps2 version. Tidus looks more normal in that one……Well its not like I planned to buy this anyways. HD doesn’t matter to much to me when it comes to games I already own and after seeing what became of Tidus, I really have no desire to see how the other characters look.

    • Tien Ron

      good for you!

  • dragoon_slayer12

I thought the game looked the same-ish, but the details is remarkable

  • The comparison shots are nice but nothing new. So far this is the only new shot of the remaster. Looks very nice.

    • Jordan Luk

Where did you find this Screenshot?!
I think Yuna looks great in the Remaster! she certainly looks more cuter!

      • I got it from the Famitsu website. Today they uploaded an interview with FFX/X-2 producer that showed up on their magazine a few days ago.

You can also check this NeoGAF thread for all that is known so far about this remaster collection.

I’m sure you’ll find enough there to keep you busy for a few days :D

Btw: I really dig how all characters are looking. But you are right, Yuna just looks lovely in this shot.

        • Jordan Luk

          Thanks for the link

    • Unlimax

Oh I remember This moment !

Please watch it in backwards version *Dies* xDDDDD

  • Aoshi00

I like the more detailed wide location shots, but like everyone said, Tidus just looks off now and more like a mannequin.. his pouty lips before were more adorable lol. Wakka, Yuna, everyone else too..nothing wrong w/ more detailed, but now the faces and expression are a bit different.. at any rate, still looking forward to play this & X-2 again on the PS3, I still remember I bought my PS2 solely for this game before, about 1 yr after launch :)

  • tbqh the new in-engine model for Tidus looks more doll-like and uncanny valley-esque than the original. I guess that’s a danger inherent in HD ports.

  • Solomon_Kano

His nose is at a completely different angle now… lol. Ah whatever, that’s not what I’m playing the game for, so it doesn’t really matter.

    • Yep, they really messed up the characters noses. Yunas hair style was changed a bit too and now it slips through the side of her head x_x

  • XypherCode

    Sweet! Looks great! :D

  • Andy

I got in to the PS2 very late and I remember putting off Playing X when I had the chance then I’d pick it up again play halfway through then restart when I forget how long it was..
Usually I don’t drop playing JRPG’s, I guess its was all for this day.
Can’t wait to get it both on the Vita and PS3. I’ll pick X-2 for Vita too if the price is right.
I really hope there’s a special collectors bundle with the PS3 and both Vita games together.

  • It looks beautiful =^_^=

  • Sardorim

    Ah… FFX.

Where screwing a Dream is legit.

    • Tincho Kudos

Hey watch it! you should put a spoiler alert message or something :P

      • Sardorim

They wont know the meaning of this until they beat the game.

        • Niko Sandwich

And some games and other media pass into the ‘spoilers-expected’ field where after a certain amount of time if you don’t know the spoilers you’re just late to the party.

  • I’m more or less ok with all the changes they’ve made except for the noses, they Square messed them up.

  • Wow i’m wanting this

  • ZekeFreek

Every Final Fantasy after VI was absolute shit. inb4 white-knights come out of the basement to punch me.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Climbs out of the basement to note such wonderful posts be taken elsewhere in the future. But I’m just a mod, no white knight.

  • SilentMC

The lighting in the PS2 version of the first set of comparisons looked better

  • Prinnydoom

Damn. I usually cant tell the difference between hd remaster and normal but here its really clear.

  • Tidus’s face is meh~

  • It is just me, or Tidus’s ‘new’ face looks a bit… fat?

  • Ni

I prefer the PS2 models over the HD ones. I don’t know… for some reason the new models look strange

  • Sergio Briceño

Aside from the first pic and considering they should not be charging full price for this, I think they did a fine job.

  • Before: Fans asked for Remake
Now: Fans are raging because of new model

    Seriously… what happen? :|

  • Tatsuya1221

Well, the model textures are improved over the ps2 version (even upscaled on an emulator with a widescreen patch, you can see the difference), that said whether people will buy this or not has more to do with ease of access, the ability to gain new content not available in the original (in the us at least), and of course love of the series.

I personally am not a fan of X and outright loathe X-2, however i will be picking this up for the ability to play the extra content that we never got in the US.

In all honesty though, i’d have preferred FFXII IZJS HD, thought 12 was a better game..

  • puchinri

Even though I miss a bit of the look on the older version, I just love how the remaster looks. It’s very lovely, and I’m really excited to enjoy both titles~.

  • badmoogle

This looks like one of the better ports this gen.For once SE did something right…Looking forward for this.

  • Utku Savaş

Oh God why…. I always kinda hated the non-detailed character faces in FFX, it was always kinda emotionless and frozen. Not to mention that permanent stupid smirk that Tidus has. But the more detailed in-game cutscene faces was superb. And now, they did the same poker face effect even in detailed character face models (like in the first screenshot). Pity.

  • James

the graphics are looking much better. the eyes have been given a bit of depth, which looks good but I think they have altered the shape and orientation of the eyes, also his chin looks a little bigger.

  • Kevin Lor

    I kinda like the ps2 color more…

  • Pretty good. Not on the calibur of Halo 1 remake. That was a complete overhall. I’m excited to play this though. I never played a FF and I’d like to give this a try on the Vita. I hope they don’t delay that version past the console one.

  • T-X

Idk, I like the improvements. I think his face looks narrow because the aspect ratio is adjusted and where the angle it’s at. Looks good enough for me, and I can’t wait to get it!

  • El

I really do think they should stop re-making HD versions of final fantasy that are already considered HD in the past -.- Where’s the goddamn ff13-versus! Bring the real stuff out!

  • I am not complaining, I love this game and can’t wait to see the remaster. However I believe that they should aslo remake and remaster some of their older games as well FFVII, FFVIII, and IX would be awesome if they actually redid them to include voices and such. Now that would be impressive and worth the time and effort, as I am sure they would make a fortune from rereleasing FFVII alone.

  • I agree, if they could have kept his vibrant look and enhanced it… Now Tidus look a bit more mature and serious. Nothing like the playful adorable-annoying character he was. lol. But I guess this is just a couple of shots of it. Could look different in the actual game

  • The new models look stranger to people because we are all used to the old ones.
