Shin Megami Tensei IV Coming To North America This Summer

By Ishaan . April 2, 2013 . 12:06am

Shin Megami Tensei IV is headed to North America, as Siliconera teased earlier this evening. (Congratulations to those of you that guessed right—although no one figured out our “Magi Event” anagram for Megaten IV!) The game is slated for release this Summer and will cost $50.

Shin Megami Tensei IV takes place in the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado and in Tokyo. You play as a member of the Samurai—a group with the ability to control demons using special gauntlets equipped with the demon summoning program. You can view the game’s official website here.

We’ve covered Shin Megami Tensei IV in great detail across multiple reports. Here are some of the more notable ones, in case you need to catch up:

I’ve been avoiding news websites all day yesterday so being greeted by this is amazing! Great news!

  • XypherCode

    Good to hear!
In one way or another this was already expected to come West. MegaTen X FireEmblem is already proof of that. :)

  • disqus_bSNsoNgLy9

    EU Release? ;w;

    • Go2hell66

  • IshimaruKaito

im pretty excited it you couldnt already tell

  • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

What did I say? WHAT DID I SAY??? ;D

Atlus’s new CEO stated that he will bring localization between Atlus Japan and Atlus USA closer than before.

Localization for this game has begun in earnest! In earnest! YAY!

    • With a nice 50$ price tag for a 3DS game that is… x.x

  • Sentsuizan_93

Oh god. Please come to Europe….

    • gamerdude

Seriously Atlus do you not want our money in EU?
At least do a digital release because the game is literally already there ready and translated.

      • Zeik56

They’ve been doing digital releases a lot lately, so I’d be kinda surprised if they didn’t.

The only thing that I could see mayne being prohibitive is the size of the game, although I don’t know how much of an issue that actually is.

        • gamerdude

I don’t think there is a limit. This definitely can’t be bigger in file size than Ocarina of Time can it?

          • Tyler Harwood Simpson

OoT’s file size isn’t that large. Fire Emblem is much larger.

      • Alexander Marquis Starkey

Dude Atlus doesn’t have an EU branch so they’ve had to work with the guys that are willing to publish their stuff there. You can’t fault them for that.

        • Jisgsaw

As far as I understand the publishing buisiness, the publisher juste serves as mediator between European instances and the developper. It’s still the developper that does the european build.

So the P4A build that only came a few weeks ago is on them, the bugs in DS:O is also on them.

Edit: well, now it’s for sure: it’s Atlus who managed to bring in the bugs:

Hope this won’t happen in the futur.

        • landlock

That doesn’t effect a digital release at all though since XSeed and Askys have been doing for ages now. Atlus have done a few but they seem slow to adapt.

        • SirRichard

Yes, yes we can fault them for that and we can fault them for not being able to do this when it doesn’t affect anyone else. The guys willing to publish their stuff here are plenty, judging by the wide range of publishers they’ve had for their things, but there’s no partnership, no established link to get them out here at all. Everyone has to go to Atlus and do it the hard way, and every time there’s a considerable gap in release dates.

      • Zeik56

I just got the announcement email from Atlus and right at the top it says “In stores and Eshop Shummer 2013”, so there you go.

      • Shane Guidaboni

Doesn’t Ghostlight bring Atlus games to Europe? Maybe you should be nagging them instead. While I feel for the EU fans, the passive aggressive comments are getting to be a little much when I enter any SMT related news board.

    • shuyai

even if they treat EUR like certain kind of brown stain on a certain kind of cloth, they must release in eur some time since all the work is already done.

    • cj_iwakura

I’ll break it to you gently: you have three months to save up for a US 3DS.

    • $39420547

don’t worry it will take some time but this will come to europe

  • Adam Zaorski

PLEASE, OH GOD let there be a eshop release! I’m from Poland(EU) and me and my gf bought two american 3ds consoles to have those juicy games like Fire Emblem, Etrian Odyssey, Rune Factory or Shin Megami Tensei, much faster(or at all since some aren’t going to get released in EU).

A eshop release makes it a day 1 buy for me, if not I’ll need to wait a week or two and pay huge tax and custom rates(makes the price of the game two times higher) :(

    Fingers crossed, and GREAT news.

    • Claud12

order it from videogames plus and you won’t get charged customs. They usually ship games couple of days before release so you will get it only couple of days later. I also bought US 3DS for same reasons as you and I import to UK too. And guess what? I’m from Poland too :)

  • klkAlexar

I wonder what extras it has since it costs that much.

    • Calamity

My guess is a soundtrack and maybe an art book for preorders.

  • JustThisOne

CHAOS ROUTE, HERE I COME. This is beautiful.

  • Shuga Suenaga

    $50USD?!! o.O

    • In their PR, they keep referring to it as a “premium title”. It’s a big deal to them by the looks of it.

      • Silver Citizen

Didn’t Capcom say the same thing about Resident Evil Revelations and they got so much flack, they lowered the price to $40?

        • Zeik56

At least Atlus USA always packs in goodies. I wouldn’t be surprised if they went the extra mile with this game either.

Besides, we’re getting it nearly 6 months earlier than I expected. I’ll pay the extra $10 just for that.

          • Well, people that have the money wouldn’t mind that much, especially if you dont have to import x.X.

With 10$ more i can get a ps3 game, uhh i love SMT games but ill wait for cheaper ver. 10$ is 10$ when u have it limited…

          • Exkaiser

Man, $10 won’t even buy you a pair of jeans (well, not a new pair, at least). It’s not that big a deal.

          • Zeik56

If that’s your mindset you probably shouldn’t buy handheld games at all. The difference between $40 and $50 is nothing if you’re treating it like an inherently inferior product. Even if it was $40 you might as well just hold on to it and buy a PS3 game if you consider them more worth that money.

I understand having a tight budget, but that just means you buy only what you really want, even if it means less stuff.

Personally I think this game will be worth that $50 well more than most console games these days that charge $60. Being on a handheld doesn’t inherently mean it’s less valuable.

        • Ferofax

FYI, many consider RE:R as a premium game. It’s entirely up to people if they wanna pay up or whine. I personally think RE:R is worth it.

      • psycho_bandaid

part of me wants to cry foul at what is obviously PR bull, but I know I will buy the game anyway. I will just save myself the effort and start gathering the money.

        • Yep. We’ll see how the $50 tag affects things.

        • AnimusVox

          Yeah same here.
I love the series enough to pay the extra but I’m not too fond of the idea but it’s cool.
It’ll most likely have more going for it then some of the games we pay 60 bucks for on current gen consoles.

      • SetzerGabbiani

If that’s the case, I hope they are putting the necessary marketing muscle behind it. Most of us die-hards will buy it without a second thought, but the mass market might flinch, even if the production values are off the charts for an Atlus game. I suppose they are counting on the Persona segment to pick this up as well. Aram needs to be evangelizing the hell out of this at E3 and elsewhere.

Could the fast localization have anything to do with the $10 premium? I’m curious to know where those extra costs are coming from. I’m not sure Atlus can make the same deals Capcom did with RE:R.

        • I think the difference between this game and Revelations is that Capcom were hoping to reach a broader audience at $40, while Atlus are relying on their core fans to pick this one up at $50 like you said.

The fast announcement is probably partly because of Soul Hackers, but also because of Atlus localizations being faster in general of late. They probably realize the most loyal fans for these games follow the news from Japan on sites like ours, so they may as well strike while the iron is hot and people are excited. It’s a smart thing to do.

Also, Aram doesn’t work at Atlus any more. He’s at Sony now.

          • Jisgsaw

“so they may as well strike while the iron is hot and people are excited. It’s a smart thing to do.”

If they could apply the same smart locig for PAL regions, it would be nice… *looks at Arena*

(And I’m not talking about opening an office here, but simply think about it sooner, and make a stable and stong partnership with one reliable PAL publisher like NIS did, which would benefit them in the long run anyway)

        • Speaking of E3, I won’t be surprised if this shows up in some form at Nintendo’s presser this year. What’s Reggie’s favorite demon?

          • benhofb

Reggie’s body is ready for Mara.

          • AnimusVox

            Cannot unsee

    • Ceci “Ruzuzu” Kiyomizu

I don’t think 10 dollars more is a big deal.
      I mean come on.

      • tubers

Give them an inch and they will go by a mile. Careful now.. seems this will be a new trend.

        • ronin4life

I don’t see a trend out of this, as this is the only 3ds game being priced this way.

I do fear it may start a trend though…

          • Fire emblem prices in amazon are scary

          • GaiunxWolfenX

in defense of nintendo and FE, the prices in amazon are put there by third party sellers, not nintendo

        • Exkaiser

Atlus is hardly a trendsetter, as far as the market at large goes.

    • cj_iwakura

Shoot, I was ready to pay $80 to import it. Same price I paid for Nocturne, happily.

    • NimbusStev

Hmm that is weird. I mean this is the flagship Atlus title and the amount of hours will totally be worth that price. But an odd choice. I always thought new game prices were pretty much fixed in place. Ah well, they’ll package something neat with the game and I will gladly pay that price.

  • XypherCode

Wait no pre-order bonus info for NA? hehe

I’m itching for that Soundtrack and Art Book. :))

  • kaizin

great news summer cant come fast enough.

  • Wake

I just can’t get over how great this game looks, that art design is fantastic. I really need to get an XL for this.

  • Wow, sooner that I though. I’m so friggin happy right now

  • Randgriz

-looks over my newspaper- Hope Europe gets it too.. -goes back to reading-

  • Zeidge

YEEESSSSSS. Now hopefully that sexy 3DS XL goes over as well..

  • darkfox1

    ALTUS……Thanks!!! Even Speedwagon is exited!

  • SilentMC

I was always expecting it to get localised but this news still hypes the crap out of me

  • Warboss Aohd

    i love ya to Atlus.

  • Detrimont

Let me guess, no Europe release til Q3/4 2014

  • Suicunesol

So we got Rune Factory 4 and Shin Megami Tensei 4 this summer. Can’t wait!

I’m glad the previous teaser wasn’t April Fools. :D

    • Rogerrmark

Hopefully,Fantasy Life will get an official announcement soon as well. That would leave us with just Bravely Default:FF and Dragon Quest VII. D:

      • puchinri

        Which will also get announcement soon, hopefully. ;u;

    • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

      Don’t forget Project X Zone!

  • Prinnydoom

    Good for america -__-

  • If they seriously want to slap a 50 dollar price tag on a hand held title that still does not have 3D battles, I definitely will not be purchasing this. 40 Dollars was bad enough for a port of a playstation 1 game (Devil Summoner Soul Hackers) and I have never actually seen a hand held game that is over 40 dollars accept for of course special edition versions.

    • Ferofax

It’s alright man, you can keep your 50 dollars. We, on the other hand, will enjoy a good game.

    • Calamity

Wuddaya know, a consumer with both a brain and personal integrity.

    • It’s probably meatier than many games that would’ve been at $60. The English debut of a previously Japan-only game (Soul Hackers) at 40 is not unreasonable at all, unless you were able to play the original Sega Saturn release in Japanese and are referring to having to fork out cash again for the 3DS version in English?

    • Solomon_Kano

Gravity Rush, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, and Ragnarok Odyssey are a few portable titles to launch at $50 within the last year.

      • sandra10

Gravity Rush and Ragnarok Odyssey both launched at $40 w/RO having a limited edition going for $50. Technika Tune and Declassified are the only other handheld games that were released for $50 other than Golden Abyss.

        • Solomon_Kano

Ah, my bad. I only saw RO’s limited edition then. I was completely off on Gravity Rush though. Thanks for the correction.

    • Alexander Marquis Starkey

Dude that’s not a port. It’s a full on remake.

      • veegeen

It’s more of an enhanced port. All they added were the voices and Raidou battles. All of the in-game assets are exactly the same. Definitely not a remake.

      • MrTyrant

To be a full remake you need visual improvements and more added content also improve a little or completly the combat system.

Like veegeen said is an enhanced port more than anything. They added a few sidequest (Raidou) voices and don’t forget about the new demons.

  • Tales_of_Master

50$ ? All of my money, take all of my money Atlus, and give me this game. I would be willing to pay 60$ for the cartridge only, having to pay an extra 10$ is nothing if we’re getting the game this early.

I had a dream a few nights ago that I was playing SMTIV and having a blast. Who said that dreams don’t come true ? Here is hoping for a Limited Edition. I would by a LE in a heart beat if one was ever released.

All I can say after this, is stay awesome Atlus.

  • Lazulis

Oooooh, I hope the 3DSXL bundle comes over. Please Atlus? I’ll preorder it right now. I’d even pay for it right NOW.

  • Ferofax

…so Soul Hackers and SMT IV, back to back?

Atlus, you planning on letting us breathe some time soon?

    • neo_firenze

What’s that jabbing me in the back trying to get my attention? Oh, hi there Etrian Odyssey 4! No, I didn’t forget you :)

      • Ferofax

…I am purposely trying to ignore EO4. I adore it, but it would just be… well, it would just sit there unattended. Too many games, too little time.

  • AkuLord3

Not surprised but woah for it to be coming closer than expected. Well i’m excited

  • Tatsuya1221

While i really want to get this game, the 50$ price tag is seriously making me question my loyalty to atlus, i just hope they have a justifiable reason for it.

    • gamerdude

While it it’s of course everyone’s own option to spend money on this or not I hope you (not YOU but players in general) realize that these kinds of games are expensive to produce and the customer base is just a small fraction of players as this is very much a niche title. Even though SMT series is legendary.

We as players can’t really have it both ways. Either we vote with our wallets and these games keep being made or else they vanish into just indie space with severely lower budgets.

I’m going to specifically defend Atlus games here for a second and say that they tend to offer a lot more value for money than your average game. Seeing cinematic explosions in MW really doesn’t hold a candle in content when compared to 100hrs long Persona game for example.

Buying shelf space for a title like this as opposed to a more core market title places a bigger strain on the publishers wallet since to sell one game costs them a lot more per copy when you take into account the marketing and distribution for it and yet the sales are only marginal compared to other genres.

I love rpgs and I hope the players recognize the role they play in the future of games like these.

    • MrTyrant

It’s an okay price for an awesome game.

    • Curan_Altea

I’m sure it’s been mentioned below a few times, but 3DS games can use a cartridge with a larger file size of 8 gb instead of 4. Resident Evil Revelations was originally gonna be $50 for this reason.

      • Tatsuya1221

If that is their reason, i can accept it, but i would like atlus to at least say so, i do not mind paying 50$ for the game, as long as i do not feel like atlus is charging this much “because we can”.

If it is a issue with the cart size, fine, but i will state that this is why i view cartridges and handhelds as inferior to consoles, carts are and always will be more expensive, which is why phantasy star 4 nearly cost me 100$ back in 1994.

  • I love how people can complain about the price tag for a handheld game. yet they fork out 60 dollars and up for generic shooters. But despite being a handheld game, we all know this game is going to be deeper than most console games … Nocturne is still more amazing than most new games

    • Rogerrmark

Agreed.Without mentioning some bland ”open-world RPG” franchises, full of glitches or ”non-linear sci-fi RPGs” out there that barely have 50 hrs,all endings included(DLC needed for full experience). Just gonna play my SMTs :P

      • Games whose names shall not be mentioned :P SMT had choice too, long before those games ever made it mainstream

    • Solomon_Kano

More than generic shooters or whatever, it just kinda baffles me that people still cling to the mindset that portable games are somehow inherently worth less than any console game at all. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to save money, but I see no reason that this should be any less deserving of its price tag simply because of the console it’s on. Value for money is the real thing to pay attention to.

Rather than be upset about this being priced so “high”, I wish people would be more upset that some of the games we shell out for on home consoles aren’t priced in accordance with the provided experience. It costs more for a yearly sports title, the umpteenth sequel to that hit series, or what essentially amounts to a map pack for last year’s game. How about people get throw their hands up about that?

      • Man, I couldn’t agree with you more! I feel Handheld and even some mobile games (OMG the Chaos Rings series!!!!!!!!) Deserve every penny. it’s horribly infuriating to see gamers complain about a NEW SMT game, not spin-off, but a new numbered title made by the original maniax team, but they seem perfectly satisfied with yearly iterations of the same game and being milked with DLC , and it is those people that stump new games being released as well as games being localized

    • DesmaX

But games on home consoles have way more developments costs than portable ones.

I don’t have a problem with the price difference

    • Dont talk for everyone

    • puchinri

Yeah, I’m confused about the price tag, but I’m thinking it can’t be unwarranted. And while I’m also just used to console games being cheaper, I think you make a very good, strong point.

  • KiTA

…To the surprise of no one…

  • 50 US dolar is a bit too much for a portable game, but for SMT it’s well worth it :3

  • glad I have an American 3ds we barely get anything here in Europe, horrible support.

    • Claud12

me too;) I had UK one but sold it to buy US one. Best decision ever. SMT 4 was one reason that I needed.

  • Solomon_Kano

Summer!? Ahh, all these summer games*! I need a joooooooooob!!! Atlus!

*It’s blowing my mind that this year will actually have a summer packed with games. The only time those words ever appear together is for the Olympics lol.

  • ragingmerifes

Announcing an NA version before the japanese one is released. Times have really changed, Atlus. For good.

  • Tristan Diaz

This is why I love Atlus, they continue to bring over amazing titles….A company absolutely worth supporting!!!

    • Tatsuya1221

If i remember correctly, it probably has to do with the SMT and persona games doing well enough in the west to even surpass japan in some cases, hence why strange journey was made with a somewhat international cast.

  • Oh please! someone tell me! When is summer in your hemisphere???

    • Solomon_Kano

      May/June – August/early September

      • I see… thank you!! It seems the game will be out in July.

        • Solomon_Kano

          No prob.

          • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

Hey Solomon, remember our discussion regarding predicting P5’s release date? We both agreed on the possibility of Atlus doing a near simultaneous release for their new native games after the CEO change. And that localization must have begun in 2012 for this game… The only games left yet to be announced is DeSu 2 Break Record but that shouldnt be too heavy a localization… and that leaves the EO game…. Now seeing SMT is coming out in July…. The possibilities for a fall or winter release of THAT title seems like a possibility…….

          • Solomon_Kano

I sure do. This should be interesting. As you said, Break Record shouldn’t take too much with most of the game already being translated. Between that and EO, yea, it’s looking like they really could do P5 this year. Should be interesting.

  • Tails the Foxhound

    Too…many…3DS games…to buy…@[email protected] I almost miss 6 months ago. (That’s a lie.)

  • Neppygear

I think zero people actually didn’t see this coming.

  • Jisgsaw

    Well, that was unexpected.

As a side note, before hating again about Europe/Australia again, at least wait and see what happens… With the fiasco of their two last releases via the small Zen and Ghoslight, I can certainly see them turn to a bigger/more experience publisher (NIS/Square), which are the only two who braught Atlus games (P4G and P4 resp.) in reasonable time (3 month)…

  • benhofb

WAIT, WHAT? Omigod. I can’t breathe.

  • Settsuo

    What a wonderful summer to own a 3DS :)

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

What a horrible year to own a wallet.T_T

  • Adrián Alucard

You guys don’t know how lucky you are, here in Spain the generic shooters cost 70€ ($89.82USD)

    $50 USD = 38.96€ very very cheap

    • Generic shooter as in console? isn’t portable game a tad cheaper?

      • Jisgsaw

Portable games are normally at 40€ (around $52 if memory serves right). Noted, WITH taxes like any prices you will see in Europe (god I wonder how you do with so much of your prices put up without taxes (don’t know if this applies for games though) :D )

        • Firekitty

Tax is NEVER included in any posted price in the US. It’s really annoying, though I guess it’s necessary since sales tax varies from state to state :.

  • Yes yes yes.

So many games coming out this summer. Ugh.

  • Del

Can we get the exclusive 3DS too, maybe? I would die…

  • Ethan_Twain

Whoah, wait. $50? I’m not one to get up on the “handheld experiences are inherently inferior so I won’t pay full price for them” train, but this is still not what I like to read. See, it’s not unprecedented for games to come out a little more expensive. There used to be a bonus $5 tax on Square Enix DS games for example, and often there are bonus bundles available at launch where you pay a little bit extra to get a statue or art book or whatever bonus. Heck, Resident Evil Revelations was set to launch at $50 before a last minute turnaround from the publisher.

But this is a little bit different. Square Enix has, for the last decade, made it their business to release the best produced games available for any hardware they’re working on. Atlus, that’s not you. Your games are generally built substance over flash. This game specifically has no animated scenes for storytelling, just art stills. Character portraits next to dialogue boxes. I’m not saying these are bad things, I accept that you’re a small outfit and you can’t burn money unwisely. But being asked to pay an additional $10 fee to play a game that clearly hasn’t had 25% more money spent on it than others on the market? Justify this to me Atlus.

Give me bonuses with first print purchase. Give me production values like Square Enix. Give me great 3D graphics and online multiplayer like Resident Evil. What this initial pitch contains, an old school JRPG built on old school tech for more money than anything else on the hardware… that’s not a good pitch. Make a better one.

  • Istillduno

If Ghostlight doesn’t move quickly with some kind of announcement this may just be a reason for some of us European players to cop an American 3DS.

  • No surprise there lol. The Shin Megami Tensei series does quite well everywhere for ATLUS.

  • sandra10

Atlus has charged $40 for PS1 ports so I guess I shouldn’t be that surprised. Still, this will be a wait and see like Soul Hackers and Innocent Sin before the sale. No handheld game I played has been worth $50 and I seriously doubt this will be either.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

“No handheld game I played has been worth $50”

O_o What a strong word there. And how i disagree with that lol. I have bought tons of great rpg on my DS and PSP era and i believe some of the title worth 50 bucks of my money lol rather than recent games on consoles which had lesser content.T_T

      • sandra10

There’s much more to a game’s value than simply content. Especially if that “content” consists of fetch quests, grinding, back-tracking, unnecessary dungeons, high rates of enemy encounters and other means of artificially extending a game’s length. Or, if there is a lot of great content there, but if the game isn’t fun or engaging, then that content doesn’t mean anything to me. But, overall, I prefer it for developers to trim the fat and leave the meat. Which is what most of that “content” is: fat.

        • Rogerrmark

Do you even like the genre?

          • sandra10

I used to love the genre but overtime I just got tired of the padding. I still play some but they have to be shorter and more concise e.g. Nier, Oath in Felghana, Valkyria Chronicles.

        • Rogerrmark

Do you even like the genre…?Or franchise?

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

While i do understand what you mean there however, don’t handheld also had those type of game which is kinda short but provide a very fun experience like the recent “Shinobi” on 3DS.
While the game is short, you an enjoy the game for damn long time.
About the rpg there, i suggest you try Infinite Space there as while it has some filler quest, it is still one huge space opera rpg with great story.^_^

    • Luna Kazemaru

sorry senran kagura: SV was worth the 130 bucks i spend on it.

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

I love the Shin Megami Tensei games! Fifty dollars is still a great price for a top quality Atlus rpg.

  • leadintea

This was relatively quick! Soul Hackers later this month and SMT IV a couple of months later? This is going to be a good year for Atlus!

  • $36487238

This is one I look forward to playing but man, I really hate it when I realized that my 3DS… I’ll work extra hard to get a new 3DS. This time, a 3DSXL.

  • pho_Enix

Can’t wait to play it in 2017 in Europe!

    • Raze

      Everydays great at our Europe~

  • Summer? Oh man, I kind of hope this gets released on/near my birthday. This would be one hell of an awesome birthday present.

  • JMaster3000

    Fuck Europe, right?

    • That’s how it usually turns out for us, yes… Crying shame really, but we can only plead and hope :|

      • Caleb

I didn’t realize that Europe got shafted so often in regards to video game releases. I have heard of EU 3DS owners not even owning local models of the 3DS and instead just having a NA unit, that’s what I would do. Either way, I feel bad for European players and hope things change somehow.

        • At the moment a lot of people still import games due to one reason or another. Not only is it already more expensive to do shipping this way, but for high tax countries that also charge custom duties on top and other silly things (Parcelforce “duty fees” for us British for example) it often totals at double the price of the game – or worse.
As an example, I once paid about 150% more than if it were readily available here.

  • Alexander Aubert

    oh man that was fast

  • $36598391

sweet, definatly looking forward to this

  • ;~~~; Happiness

  • superdry

Oh wow…summer? The JP version comes out at the end of May. That is friggin’ awesome.

The price tag? $50? I think it’s well worth it for a SMT game considering how long it can take to beat one of them. I do wonder if it is using a slightly larger ROM cartridge than other 3DS titles or not.

  • MrTyrant

I really love fast localization, that i wouldn’t care about the price.

  • No! Damn it Atlus, you need to give me time to play your next game you haven’t released yet (Soul Hackers) before you release ANOTHER one!!

    • MrTyrant

Soul Hacker will be in april. SMT IV will be in…july? august? but you have enough time.

  • Richard N

But what about the Shin Megami Tensei 3DS!? IS THAT COMING OVER HERE!?!

    • AuraGuyChris

I’m starting to believe that this is that game, even though it’s not a Persona game.

      • Richard N

        …. what?

I know this is Dhin Megami Tensei IV. Im asking whether they’re gonna release that 3ds Shin Megami TenseI edition with the awesome demon and angel design.

  • Shane Guidaboni

Holy crap! I called it you guys! I wished for a near simultaneous release for Japan and N.America and we’re basically getting it! But why does it cost $50?

  • Nameless App 1989

Now all we need is DeSu 2: BR, P2:EP, and it’ll be all good.

  • I’m still waiting for 2nd Super Robot Wars OG for the PS3, Atlus. Though, I hope SMT 4 will come to Europe.

  • Carlos Escalante

Hope it at least has a dual voice option for the $10 extra bucks, as well something more interesting that a CD as a bonus.

  • puchinri

That’s fantastic news, and I’m really excited! That’s much sooner than I thought.
    It sucks to be quitting my job now without another lined up yet, but I guess I better start saving up now. ;u;

    (Why $50 though~?)

  • AnimusVox

    50 bucks?

  • l777l

Nice. A region-free console would be good, too.

  • I’m… I’m… so… happy :’) YEEEEEAAAAAAH!

  • Zero_Destiny

I figured this was what Ishy was teasing. And woah, congrats on getting to tease a release this big a bit before the others. ^___^ It’s not really anything I had any doubt about but glad to hear it’s coming and coming soon.

I’ve been on an SMT hype now because of all the news about this game and Soul Hackers coming soon! Just beat SMT1, Persona 2, and now playing through Persona 1. lol I was thinking of beating SMT2, and doing another run on Strange Journey but I’m holding off to get through the Persona titles that were sitting on my shelf for a long time. ^^’ Can’t wait for this, even if it’s $10 more then most games. >__<

    • Did you just say you beat SMT1? Like, the NES game?

      • superdry

That would be just Megami Tensei. SMT would imply, at earliest, the SNES version.

      • Zero_Destiny

Yeah I beat the first SMT, but you know, on the SuFami/SNES/Whatever, not the NES game that’s just Megami Tensei (I think). lol I was kinda worried about SMT1 since it’s rather old FP-RPG but it actually hooked me in pretty well. Though knowing your taste I don’t think it’s for you. lol But speaking of your taste, I need to get back to Fire Emblem Awakening. :O

        • @Zero_Destiny:disqus @superdry:disqus Oh, right. I completely forgot Megami Tensei used to be a thing. Heh.

You’re a braver man than I. I can’t even bring myself to sit through SJ, let alone the older first-person MegaTen games. I came aboard with Digital Devil Saga, which is probably why…

          • Zero_Destiny

Yeah, honestly I was a little worried if I would like it too, the game seemed kinda archaic even for my taste and cost I think around $16 or so? Something like that, 1,000-something yen. lol

But SMT 1 actually had a pretty good story so I think that got me through, same for the older Personas, the stories kinda helped me get through those really tedious dungeon designs. My first real (and I guess that’s even a little debatable lol) SMT experience was with Persona 3 sooooo yeah … Strange Journey was kinda my first First Person JRPG. lol

          • You went back to the first-person style after Persona? I’m impressed! I do sometimes wish I had the patience for first-person dungeon crawlers, but sadly, they require more time than I have to give… :(

          • Ethan_Twain

That was my arc too. I jumped in at Persona 3, followed up with Persona 4, then went on the internet and discovered “There are MORE of these games?” Then I backtracked to Digital Devil Saga, and just as I was getting burned out in that Strange Journey released. That was my first exposure to first person dungeon crawlers, but I love it. I suppose I’ve gone steadily from the most to the least accessible of the SMT games.

And my journey isn’t done, because I tracked down Nocturne and it is WAY too hardcore for me. I may yet get there someday, but for now that’s beyond my limit.

  • wasad

Now if they could bring the SMTIV 3DS over here too, that would exceed my expectations. Didn’t think SMTIV would be localized so soon, though

  • Sardorim

    Someone better die.

Someone awesome so I can rage.

    • Testsubject909

I have the sensation that if you choose Neutral. Everyone will die.

  • Brandon001

i REALLY have a feeling that the $50 tag will be worth it, this doesn’t seem like JUST another handheld game, more like an experience.

  • Herok♞

Let’s see, I have bought games at $60 before that I didn’t really like, I am fine with paying $50 for a game I know I will have a good time with.

  • Exkaiser

Ah, dammit, it’s coming so soon. I’m going to have to give up on my Soul Hackers preorder.

As they say in Amigara, “It’s coming this way!!”

  • Skye Johnson

If it’s a good game, it will be worth the $50 spent. It looks very nice, and just because it’s portable doesn’t automatically mean it’s worth less. The price tag is higher than I was expecting, but I’m also hoping good things come from this and make it worth the $10 extra in the long run.

At least Atlus almost always throws in goodies with pre-orders, so you’ll always get a little more with the game. Probably a soundtrack or artbook (or both), but we’ll see.

Already went and pre-ordered the game at Gamestop. I’m also curious about whether or not they’ll do a special edition of it like they did with Persona 2: Innocent Sin. I wouldn’t mind having that.

  • I’m a bit shocked that it’s going for $10 more than the usual price, but considering how fast this is being localized, I doubt many will complain. Kudos to Atlus.

  • I was TOTALLY ready for this. And by totally ready, I meant totally not ready. I’m super excited!! We’ll be having (almost) back to back SMT game releases~

    • Testsubject909

I’m totally not financially ready for this.

  • James Griffin

    just fucking import it.

    • Testsubject909

3DS is region locked, makes importing a bit more problematic.

Edit: Plus purchasing it in your home ground counts up the number of sales which in turn provides solid numbers on an audience for these games.

      • James Griffin

fair nuff. i keep forgetting only ps3 is region free.

      • James Griffin
