Bravely Default: Flying Fairy Will Be Localized For The West

By Spencer . April 3, 2013 . 6:30pm

Square Enix still hasn’t announced Bravely Default: Flying Fairy for North America or Europe, but don’t worry—the nostalgic turn-based role-playing game will be released overseas.

During the Game Developers Conference, Siliconera was able to confirm with multiple trusted sources that Bravely Default: Flying Fairy will be localized for English-speaking audiences.

Look forward to playing Bravely Default

  • ragingmerifes

OK. 2013 is the best year ever. We can all agree on that.

    • Pyrotek85

We’re only getting started too, my poor wallet and backlog lol.

      • Riseabovethesky

My poor back… I feel the pain too! ;)

  • Bruce Phillips

    We are getting so close!!

  • brian

Part of me (edit: most of me) regrets getting a DS instead of a 3DS.

    • James Beatty

The other part of you should regret it too

    • Pyrotek85

You mean recently? Yeah I’d have gotten the 3DS, it’s not like it isn’t backwards compatible. Maybe do a trade in?

      • brian

I would if I hadn’t missed out on so many GBA games.

        • Pyrotek85

Ah I see. I last had the GBA but had skipped DS, so I’ve been catching up on those lol. Odd’s are there will be at least another model revision of the 3DS, so you’ll have your chance.

        • Honestly, you should’ve just looked into investing in a GBA SP. Those things are tough, you can probably find one for like $40, their charge and screen are both excellent, /and/ they can play GB/GBC games, which the DS can’t.

    • Pombar

As long as you didn’t get a DSi you might have made the right choice. So many good import games that you’d miss out on with the 3DS. You need a multiregion machine to play all the great region exclusives – Ouendan for JP, EO2+3 for US, Inazuma Eleven 1+2 for EU.

      • Armane

None of those games are DSi enhanced anyway, so they aren’t region locked and could be played in the 3DS/DSi without issue.

        • Pombar

I was under the impression that it was the console rather than the games that were region-locked? Interesting

  • PhilliesFlyers89

I like this new Square already!

    • Raos

I’ts the same Square, the changes will go in effect from June

      • Lol… besides, when i read that this came to my mind: “if only stuff in companies worked this fast…”

      • Ehren Rivers

Actually, not necessarily. While the official changing of hands for CEO takes place in June, the full restructure of the company is already underway. (This is the reason they posted losses for the financial year that ended with March) Given the sudden influx of information from the company on various games and the seemingly overnight change in their attitudes mid-March, it’s entirely possible that these changes have been in the works for a long time now.

    • Riseabovethesky

Let’s give this one a proper welcome when it’s released everyone!

      • Hound

“Hey Mister! I am mad scientist! It’s so cool! … gimme a copy of Bravely Default!” will be how I welcome it. Borrowing a lab coat for the occasion.. <..>

  • SirRichard

I’m going to be holding you lot to this, I swear I will nut someone if they don’t act on this. Like, it was expected and all, and the game has had quite some hype behind it for a while now, but it’s good to hear that it’s actually coming. E3 announcement, do you reckon, or will they move to announce it themselves before then?

    • Ehren Rivers

A separate announcement is a possibility, of course, but supposedly this E3 will be the biggest event for Square Enix in recent memory so it’s likely that it will appear there too.

    • Pombar

I was thinking localisation efforts had just failed – after all, we never did get FF Agito 13/FFZero, which had massive hype and promotion behind it at one point (as well as solid sales and reviews).
So this news makes me ridiculously happy.

      • $36598391

We never did get Front Misson 2, Front Mission 5 or the Saga2 and 3 NDS remakes either

  • Taylor Davis

OH MY GOODNESS! YES! 2013 is awesome, first dragon crown is coming out now this.Bioshock infinite, Fire Emblem Awakening and some other games in these past few months started as a bang for this year. But finally its coming to the states. I’m so happy and I was losing hope, (to the point where I was going to buy a Japanese 3ds and import this game.) YAY!

    • Bruce Phillips

bioshock freakin blew my mind. also we are getting the last of us

      • Taylor Davis

Bioshock Infinite was awesome and a true masterpiece. I forgot about “the Last of us”. Plus a sweet dishonored dlc is coming out this month on the 16th. So many games are coming out!

I wonder how I’ll manage to buy all the games I want this year. Damn. I’m just so happy it’s getting localized though! This game, Project X Zone and Pokemon X will keep my 3DS busy this year!

    • raymk

I think they are spaced out enough especially since the summer is coming up to make that money bro.

      • Raoni Marques

Too bad those are not the only ones I want! lol
But you’re right, there’s still enough time to make the necessary amount of money by the time all the good games start coming out.

        • raymk

They aren’t only mine either, add Soul hackers and maybe luigi mansion 2 to the list :).

          • Raoni Marques

I still need to get Xillia, Dragon’s Crown, The Last of Us, Muramasa Rebirth and a bunch of other games. It’s gonna be a busy year.

          • raymk

Crap I need those as well.

  • Unknown

Gonna buy a 3DS with it

  • LunarKnite

So, that’s one down, 3DS. Two more. Let’s see if you can bring me some Digimon and Dragon Quest goodness too.

    • Farid Belkacemi

DQ VII is a pretty safe bet, but Digimon ? Sorry pal, I don’t think you’ll get it.

      • LunarKnite

One can hope. One can hope.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Digimon…………Bamco………….T_T…………..i pray to god that the upcoming new Digimon anime is going to do well to ensure we get that game.

  • Ethan_Twain

That’s pretty cool. I guess since we haven’t heard any official type announcement this will be a holiday release. That’s also cool. I honestly feel like the JRPG concentration on the 3DS over the summer is too high already. I’m a fan of the genre, but am I really going to have time for Mario and Luigi, Project X Zone, Rune Factory, and TWO giant SMT games? Already I’m not gonna get to everything.

The holiday season though? It looks pretty clear right now. Bravely Default and Pokemon. I’m sure more will be announced for the annual shopping season, but SURELY there won’t be as many JRPGs releasing on the system at the end of the year as there are in the middle.

I recently JUST recently got a 3ds. I remember when I first saw this, I was like “deng this is a must have a 3ds for game” but was a bit sad I didn’t see any new news and then BAMMMM!!! taking a break from chemistry studying and I see this!!!!!
I am soooo happy. I really love how the devs designed 4 heroes of light. Although it wasn’t a perfect game, it had so much charm and I’m glad to see this game coming to US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

They said the same thing about Final Fantasy Type-0 though.

    • NoctisCrystallisXV

Type-0 is reason haven’t localize to the west.

    • Elemiel

The difference is that Type-0 is on a portable that is, sadly, nearly dead in the west while BD is on a portable that is beginning to flap its wings.
At this point, it feels like the only way we might get Type-0 is if it gets the opportunity of being ported.

  • NoctisCrystallisXV

Awesome! I have Project x Zone and this too.

  • Fastchrone

    where’s that cofindent come from?

  • Immortal1

Superb news – they just need to fix that name. One of the worst in a long time.

    • AkuLord3

Yes because really that’s the biggest issue that noone gave two ounces on

      • Immortal1

No, you’re right, I haven’t heard actual localizers speaking about how the name is hot garbage and makes no sense… Silly me!

    • Herok♞

the name is fine, I am guessing you don’t know that the name stands for the game mechanics.

      • Suicunesol

Actually, while it does make sense in the context of the game, as a lone title it still totally fails. Some people have probably gotten used to it by now, but there’s still far better titles they could have chosen.

      • Immortal1

If it has anything to do with the game mechanics, that still makes for a ridiculous name. That’s why Final Fantasy isn’t called “Wait And Attack.” Mario isn’t called “Coin Collector.” I read what the director of the game said regarding the name and he said, “Have courage and renounce the promises and responsibilities that are expected of you. In other words, don’t just blindly do what you’re told, act according to your will.”

Bravely Default probably is just two words that sounded good to his ears. That’s how a lot of things in Japanese pop culture are when it comes to using English. He probably read the word Bravely, read the definition, read the word Default and its definition and thought that combining the two would make a good title name. In Japan that’s OK. In places where people grow up speaking English, it comes off as goofy.

        • Elemiel

This seems to be rustling your jimmies to the extreme, what would you call this game then?

        • puchinri

I don’t know, we do ridiculous names too (well, the US does, I can’t speak for all of the West). BD makes sense enough, even if it doesn’t sound cool or like it initially makes sense.

Then again, I’m used to English failing or not making any sense, even on this side of the pond, so I’m not too bothered by it.

      • puchinri

Even outside of the game mechanics, it makes sense for at least one of the characters. It sounds awkward on the tongue, but I think it makes sense in its own way (and the FF part has a small code in it so it shouldn’t be messed with either). The title is rather smart, really.

    • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

…Have you forgotten Conception: Please Have My Baby?

  • cc

Now all we need is a 3DS port of Type-0 and life will be complete.

    • Visa Vang

Why 3DS? They’re not gonna utilize the 3DS’s add-on Circle Pad anyways. I rather have it on PSV.

      • Ethan_Twain

I actually kind of expected a 3DS port of Final Fantasy Type-0 a while ago. It makes good sense to me. The 3DS is more powerful than a PSP, but not by a giant margin. Since Type-0 is one of the best looking PSP games, I reckon they could get away without upgrading their graphics at all (except perhaps for a 3D effect) which would keep costs down. The 3DS is also more successful than either of the Sony handhelds outside Japan, so that would be a preferred platform for a localization if they wanted to do that.

Even the controls between the PSP original and the 3DS match up, with the single analog stick on the left. Just add a few 3D effects and some street pass function or another and I feel like this could be a cost effective redistribution of what was quite a well received game.

…then again, I predicted this over a year ago and it still hasn’t happened. Every passing day makes a quick port like this less likely.

        • I think I will prefer it on my Vita… I could care less for the 3D function. But that is my opinion.

I am stoked for this though. Now we have to wait for Versus and KH3 >.>

        • SirRichard

Well, Square are really hurting now and will be looking for quick ways to make some money fast, so it may happen yet. Wouldn’t be the first to make the jump from PSP to 3DS either.

        • cc

Exactly this. A 3DS port is probably the best way for them to get Type-0 out to a wide audience with little expense on the back end. Add in the fact that Nintendo is making a big push to help Japanese companies bring their games overseas and it all seems perfect.

          • Ethan_Twain

Amen. I really thought when the 3DS took off in Japan that we would see quite a few PSP games getting 3DS ports/upgrades both because they would sell on the red hot hardware and also so they could have a shot overseas. Even some games that did get localized like Final Fantasy Dissidia, or Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep would make a certain amount of sense.

Clearly I miscalculated though. There’s a Digimon game getting a PSP to 3DS upgrade, but that’s about it.

      • Thats basically what I wanted to say without “offending” anyone or crushing any FB dreams…

    • Yvonne Tsang

TBH, I think it’s a bit too late for Type-0. :( Such a shame; it got excellent reviews.

    • Ethan_Twain

You know the drill. You want more Square Enix content on the 3DS, make sure you grab this. Especially right now, with the company reevaluating itself.

Actually, I should practice as I preach. Maybe instead of that SMT IV pre-order I should reconsider Kingdom Hearts 3D…

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Indeed. We need to vote more with our muney here. I already get almost all game released by S-E on 3DS here.(Except Heroes of Ruin.T_T) And if they do release this game and Type-0 for 3DS, i am going to support them too.^_^

        • Just curious why would they even consider a port of Type-0? They already have minimal assets in HD.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well, i consider that even though S-E wanted to deliver this game outside of Japan, they still need to carter for Japan here and considering how many updated HD remaster having lower sells and how Japanese game market have move more to handheld, 3DS is a better choice.

This is just my opinion on how S-E would see. And also you must understand that even though FF is a big franchise, jrpg is still kinda niche. Releasing on consoles is going to be a bigger risk as they are going to be dependent on the western countries to be profitable.

          • Ahhh. When you put it that way, it does make a lot of sense. It would definitely be a risk to complete the game in HD.
            Thanks for the analysis.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

No prob.^_^ It is always nice having good game industry conversation rather than the normal i want this game on this hardware because i want it.
And i don’t care whether the company is going to die or live after this which is sadly the current gamer generation stance.

          • lol good points. I am actually a owner of a vita and 3ds. my main pull for vita is the graphics would look beautiful. but, if i knew square could keep the game at the same level of the psp once ported to 3ds an that it would save conserve finances, that would seem like the better deal as it would serve my yearning for the game and save the company money.

      • Jason Ryer

get both you wont be missing out on ether you have time for megaten 4

        • Ethan_Twain

The 3DS release schedule is so full and my funding is not unlimited :( I’m afraid it’s one or the other at this point, since I already put down payment for Soul Hackers and Mario and Luigi. And honestly I’m looking forward to Animal Crossing more than any of these…

It’s a good problem to have though. Too much quality content coming for a platform I own. I can always buy games cheaper a few years down the road :)

          • I’d got with Megaten. I mean KH3D is pretty good, but SMT4 is SMT4… nuff said. Though KH3D is likely cheaper by now and SMT4 is $50 so it would be both cheaper and fulfill your “practise what you preach” deal.

          • brian

SMT4 is likely to go up in price or at least not go down for a year maybe, unlike KH3D, or Animal Crossing.
Atlus has a tendency to have low print runs and few reprints if any for games like this.

          • Jason Ryer
  • Suicunesol

    I am so glad that the uncertainty of this title’s localization is finally behind us. ;_;

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Of course. While i am quite positive on this game coming here, it is always nice seeing this news coming out.^_^

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

I’m liking the new Square-Enix president more than Yoichi Wada already.

    • Raos

Yoichi Wada is still the CEO, maybe you should wait for the new one’s start to praise him

      • sakusakusakura_nyo

Maybe you and Yoichi Wada should go make out or something. At least Yosuke Matsuda hasn’t messed up anything yet.

        • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

Didn’t he just lay off a ton of people from one of Square’s California studios in an attempt to trim the fat?

          • Yes. The LA offices that have way more departments than are legitimately needed. Break down certain aspects needed for the SE US branch (Marketing & PR, Localization etc.). The problem is they are funding areas of the company that are not crucial to the release of information and games in the US.

  • KingGunblader

Shut up and take my money etc. Great news!!

  • Immortal1

So, by the number of down votes I received on my previous comment, I’m guessing people here think Bravely Default: Flying Fairy is actually a good name for a game? I’m a native English speaker. If I made a game with mangled Japanese words, and released it in Japan, I would be ridiculed by Japanese players.

Don’t get me wrong, I want this game badly. I just think the name isn’t good (and I’m not the only one, Google it)! Sorry, I want Japanese games to evolve! I don’t want them to remain in their little bubble!

    • SirRichard

All The Bravest was a Final Fantasy iOS thing, and one made rather blatantly for abusing microtransactions, not a suggested name for Bravely Default.

      • Immortal1

Thanks. I actually haven’t been on this site in a while, so I did not know about that.

    • Its should also be noted that BD and FF refer to instances/ functions within the gameplay.

  • darkfox1

All these RPG’s for the 3DS….. Yess…. All of my YES and money!

  • Shane Guidaboni

Already 108 comments? WHOA. 2013 and 3DS. If you love RPGs, tell me why you don’t have a 3DS right now?!

    • PoweredByHentai

Region-lock, lack of an account-based eShop, and lack of UNIVERSAL POWER supply are pretty good reasons.

      • Suicunesol

Region lock shouldn’t be a problem if most RPGs are getting localized?

        • PoweredByHentai

Conception 2, Gyrozetter, Layton vs Phoenix Wright, Super Robot Taisen UX. I don’t see those crossing the pond any time soon.

          • Suicunesol

            K, fair enough.

I would think Layton Vs. Wright would be on its way though.

          • PoweredByHentai

Same here. Thing is, I don’t think anyone knows who has the licensing rights to it for North American distribution.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Level-5 if i am not mistaken. It has been tell last time? Can’t really remember.

          • PoweredByHentai

Interestingly enough, I was still driving by Level-5’s office up until last year.

          • raymk

I see conception 2 and Layton vs Wright making it over. I mean seriously you don’t think that game will come over of all games?

          • PoweredByHentai

Conception 1 never crossed the pond and that was on the PSP.

As for Layton vs Wright, that depends on who has the license for North American distribution. It’s a joint project between Capcom and Level-5 but there’s no guarantee that their respective US divisions will actually play nice.

          • ninjapresident

Conception was set to be brought over though, if I remember correctly. It just never happened… :l

        • Alexandra Cordes

Not unless you want a lot of games that will never be localized.
I will probably end up buying a Japanese 3DS this summer. >:I

        • Late localization is pretty much a problem in itself

      • raymk

I don’t agree with the region lock bit. I didn’t even know Universal power supply was even an issue. They stopped region lock because they are trying to bring out every warranted 3ds game.

        • PoweredByHentai

The annoying part is that the standard charger doesn’t even snap off to become a USB charger. The 3DS has zero portability value right there.

Also, all 3DS games are region-locked.

          • Miss_Madness

Okay that’s actually a weird issue you have there. Is it really necessary? You can get a universal charger if you really wanted one.

          • PoweredByHentai

Yes, it actually is necessary to me because I don’t want to carry any more accessories for my devices than what I absolutely need.

How about you try traveling to Southeast Asian countries like Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia or even Taiwan for a few weeks at a time due to family or business-related issues?

It happens about once a year for me so I would expect Nintendo to get on the ball and adopt something more practical for its devices.

          • I used this in the US, Singapore, and Taiwan. $10 well spent for all the awesome Streetpasses :)

          • PoweredByHentai

I saw that and have heard mixed things about it. Apparently, when it works, it’s a godsend but when it doesn’t, it is kind of rage-inducing or something. Would still have preferred a built-in first-party solution instead of having to go around for 3rd party solutions.

            Thanks though!

          • I use it 24/7 at work and at home with no issues, and I have my 3DS every day for public transportation.

          • Herok♞

The thing about this is most people don’t take their systems out of the country they buy it from, so power isn’t a problem for the majority of people but only for rare cases.

          • PoweredByHentai

I disagree. Whenever I go on an international flight and get stuck waiting for my connecting flight, I look around in my area and I’m pretty much guaranteed to see DSes or PSPs or iOS devices.

          • Herok♞

That considered I still think the people at airports are only a small percentage of the people who own those systems overall in a region but I guess it really doesn’t matter in the long run.

          • Suicunesol

You want to charge your 3DS by plugging it into a computer?

…wait. That’s actually not a terribly bad idea… but hardly a reason to not buy one at all. Since when was not being able to plug your portadevice into a computer make your device not portable?

          • PoweredByHentai

I would like to be able to recharge my device using whatever is available standards-wise. Nintendo is failing at that standards issue.

I can recharge my PS Vita through any USB port and even its power adapter supports Universal Power.

Put it this way, why are iOS devices so popular to international travelers? Because you can recharge those devices through a USB connection. My mom has an iPad 2 from Singapore and we recharged it just fine through my sister’s desktop via a USB cable.

I have a Galaxy Note 2 smartphone; I recharge it at my office via a USB cable. That USB cable also snaps into the wall adapter.

It is called convenience. Technology standards have reached a point where flunking on the convenience factor is a black mark.

          • Link

So a few convenience issues are holding you back from buying a system which its primary function is to play video games? I thought the only reason people bought console/handhelds was to play games they enjoyed, but people actually say “Oh i like all these games but I wont play it because I cant charge the console on my laptop.” Not to be mean or anything but really? If you want to play a game just go out and play it. Its like your just trying to find the smallest of reasons for yourself not to for reasons I dont know why.

          • raymk

I’m aware they are all region locked. Still they are trying to localize games that everyone wants and they actually succeeded so far.

          • PoweredByHentai

And there are fringe games that simply have no chance of making it across the pond. What happens if Capcom pulls another Miles Edgeworth 2 with the 3DS?

Yeah, that region-lock will look that much more hateful by then.

          • mirumu

In the US they’re trying. Not so much in the other regions.

          • James Carney

Who is this mythical “they” you are talking about. Some companies are, some companies aren’t. Nintendo has nothing to do with any decisions on localizing third-party software beyond the licensing. I mean look at this news itself, BDFF STILL hasn’t officially been announced yet and it’s been how long? While it’s great that we’re getting it, it was extremely questionable whether we would or not and there’s a LOT of games people are looking forward to that aren’t getting localized because they don’t have the mainstream appeal.

And that’s just considering the US, what about the PAL audiences that get even fewer than we do in most cases who could easily play a US version in English it they weren’t region locked?

      • mirumu

I have a third-party 3DS->USB cable that does charge my 3DS from any USB power source so there’s certainly no technical barriers here. Why Nintendo don’t provide this by default is beyond me.

Totally agree with you with the region locking and the eShop too. I do own a 3DS, but it’s a US import. Buying a local model would have been pointless with the region lock and Nintendo’s typically poor PAL region support.

        • PoweredByHentai

Which brand of 3DS ==> USB do you use? I’ve heard conflicting assessments regarding the 3DS/USB cables so I wasn’t sure if those are even functionally legitimate solutions or not. If the 3DS can be recharged by USB, then it is pretty retarded of Nintendo to not have included it with the device in the first place.

The worst part is that Nintendo makes no mention of this on their official sites. It’s almost as if they are gaming people into purchasing single purpose power adapters instead of giving people the option to just go with a convenient general solution.

          • mirumu

Unfortunately I couldn’t tell you the brand, I can’t find any order details and it’s not printed on the cable anywhere. It’s one of those bulky universal ones with about five plugs for various devices. Very clumsy and the quality isn’t great. I’d much prefer a basic official one from Nintendo, but I have never had any problem charging the 3DS with the one I have. Always charges quickly and reliably.

In my case I have no choice but to charge off USB since Nintendo’s official switch-mode power adaptors are the only ones I’ve ever seen that don’t support 110V-240V. They’re only rated for 120V and I need 240V. The same is true for the US Wii-U power adaptors.

          • PoweredByHentai

Yeah, the octopus adapters always have me second-guessing their quality. =/

Have you considered getting one of those voltage converters, stabilizers, or even back-up power units? Yeah, this is why Universal Power support would be so incredibly handy. =/

          • mirumu

Actually I do have a step down transformer I use for the Wii-U. Not just any will work. I calculated it needed to be rated for at least 2Amp to be safe. I could use that for the 3DS if I dug out the original Nintendo adaptor from wherever it’s hiding. Even with it’s clumsiness the USB one is a lot more convenient though as you say.

Personally I think there’s no excuse for making switched mode adaptors that don’t support 100V-240V. I just checked some random ones around the house, and other than the Nintendo ones they’re all 100-240V. Apple, Nokia, Sony, Samsung, Phillips, Nikon. Even the really cheap no-brand ones from China are.

          • PoweredByHentai

So yeah, lesson of the day: convenience is king. =/

Why hasn’t the EU called Nintendo out on this shenanigan?

          • There is one sold by gamestop for $9.99 that has a usb plugin and also has an AC adapter. It has worked great for me for about 5 months or so.

      • raitouniverse

hm, personally I think your only legitimate complaints here are region lock, universal power supply and lack of an account based eShop.

  • AuraGuyChris

…So, what are those trusted sources? I’m not riding the hype train until those sources are revealed to be trustable…

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

U no believe Spencer? I am dissapointed here lol. *joking*^_^

  • FFmax

I wonder what took so long? Is there a lot of text to translate or something?

    • Text+ Spoken dialogue in cutscenes

      • Testsubject909

For translating text. I always like to point out Earthbound and FF6.

If the team is up for it, they can do it pretty damn quickly.

        • I have HEARD that this game has a huge ammount of text. Although you are perfectly right, the text can be done quite fast. Voice recording could take a while and I can remember a lot of people saying that the voices were there initial scapegoat as to why the game would not be localized. But who knows. Knowing SE 15% of the game has been translated for the US market

  • TheExile285

    About damn time

  • Guest

I hope this sells very well in the US and Europe as in Japan the sales were lukewarm. Not sure if the subtitle will put some people off who are unaware of what the game is

    • SirRichard

200k for a new handheld IP (even one with ties to a massive franchise) is hardly lukewarm, mate, they basically confirmed a sequel within weeks if I remember right.

      • M’iau M’iaut

It is worth considering how folks who know no Final Fantasy before X will react to this. Then again, one could probably ask that of anyone who knows no FF before VII.

It screams love letter to those whose favs are IV or VI, so of course I’ve always been all ears.

I do hope this will not be one you will be waiting on, my friend.

        • Weren’t 3 and 5 the ones that heavily focused on switching classes not 4 and 6? Or maybe you mean love letter in another way?

          • M’iau M’iaut

I’m thinking more the style of the story, and the focus on individual folk.

          • Ah. I don’t really remember 6 much but I see. So both of our comments are valid in a sense. What we both are trying to get at is that BD:FF is a throwback to classic Final Fantasy (pre 3D games/VII (though that is a great game and the ones after it aren’t all bad)).

        • SirRichard

It’s Square Enix; if there is a wait, it’s only going to be a few months at worst (hopefully) as opposed to nearly a year/more than a year. They’ve been pretty good about release dates for a good while now, 4 Heroes of Light was the usual three days after the US release for instance, and I don’t see that stopping soon.

    • What? Sales in Japan are well over 300k. It’s done incredibly well.

      • Guest

By Square Enix standards they seemed disappointed by the Tomb Raider and Hitman sales figures so I thought this would be the same going by that model

        • puchinri

For Hitman, that was worldwide though, right? BD’s were for a (new) IP unrelated to another series (while Hitman was a sequel of an already popular/known series). TR is also of the reboot/sequel category (I can’t remember if they were going by worldwide sales or just NA sales though for that one).

        • The budget for those games is far, far higher than Bravely Default’s. Also, those shipment figures were worldwide. And finally, those are two very well-known franchises that have been running for years. The two situations are nothing alike. :)

  • Shadowman

Oh Square Enix, yes you may have my money.

  • benhofb

I am really hoping for a release soon, but until thin I have Soul Hackers and now SMT4 to keep my RPG urges down… =^_^=

  • Armane

Finally. But what about DQ7/Terry’s Wonderland? Did you ask these sources about those too?

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

That, we need to wait for Nintendo and how DQ7 or 10 does first.
If those game IS released here and does well, i can imagine that Terry Wonderland or even Rocket Slime can come here lol.^_^

    • Ethan_Twain

Lol, don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. I’m afraid Siliconera only has ONE company secret to leak out to us from GDC.

  • gamerdude

Wow I was really worried there for a while.
4 warriors of light was great but the auto-battle feature was way overpowered.

Really waiting forward to this one.

  • Gabi López Ramírez

That is all. Every other feeling will be expressed once it is in my hands. ;’)

  • tubers

Will this have plenty of dubbing?

  • rainelee

    I love you Matsuda!

  • kylehyde

All hail the new square enix president. Cause bravely default is coming

    Viva el presidente

  • XypherCode

    Good to hear! :)

  • This and Project X Zone were the only games I wanted localized. My life is complete.

  • Pockystix

    *checks the date*

    yeah, it’s not April 1st

    • We were originally going to put this up on Monday, but yeah… it was April 1st, so we decided to hold off. That, and SMTIV.

      • Ethan_Twain

Hah, how often do you have so many exclusive scoops that you’ve gotta sit on one just to space them out? Siliconera’s moving on up!

        • Honestly? We space stuff out every single week. It’s not just for exclusive scoops either. Even in the case of regular news, it’s a good idea to space things out so that the smaller games don’t get drowned out by the big ones.

      • SteveEdwards

        surely you’re not serious….

        • Deadly serious. We were thinking of when would be best to run the story, but then on Saturday night, we realized Monday was April 1st.

  • Sydney Losstarot

Wow, I just got a free 3DS from a drawing done from the plasma donation center that I go to this week and now I get news of this. I also go a really good score on my programming test. This week has been awesome.

    • puchinri

Wow, haha, that is a fantastic week! Congrats and go you~!

  • Insigma

Authentic UK voice acting would be amazing.

  • First Project X Zone. Now Bravely Default. Awesomeness indeed. The only game that still has to be localized now is 2nd Super Robot Wars Original Generation for the Playstation 3.

  • alexff7

FUDGE YESSSSSSSSSSS! I’m glad to see Square making some intelligent decisions! I can’t flippin’ wait.

  • Michael Stevens

“Will be localized for english speaking audiences” in most cases I’d be pleased about that. But SE hasn’t made the best calls and the 3DS is region locked. Best not celebrate just yet.

  • CirnoLakes

This was the good news we all deserved to hear.

  • Adam Zaorski

Awesome news. Hope the localization process goes fast and that there will be also a eshop release.

  • Ayaka

The wallet. I can hear it crying like a baby already.

  • Natat

My Wallet is dying this year… so many amazing games coming out…!!

  • 2013 is turning out to be the best yr in gaming in a long time

  • Wake

Trifecta complete. SMT IV, Fantasy Life, Bravely Default. 3DS is officially the new master race.

    • Testsubject909

Cute but please do take the whole Master Race thing and shove it.

I never enjoy anyone trying to make use of that stupid self-wanking self-proclaimed mindless blind elitist title unto oneself or a group.

It’s… really annoying after quite a many year of gaming simultaneously on PC and consoles and having to deal with some very stupid people with knowledge on certain technical levels.

      Really annoying.

As you can see, rubs me the wrong way.

      • Wake

I love how you just take the joke and twist it as if it’s a personal attack on you. I take back what I said about the 3DS. You, Testsubject909, are the new master race.

  • Zenthos

If they are localizing Bravely Default, they WILL localize DQ7 3ds next.

  • Raltrios

…It just happened. You know… that thing. That involves brix. And a change of pants.

  • Relytgninroht

    Yay! Now how about Type-0?

  • Michael Ching Kao

  • Michael Ching Kao

This is quite funny because I just recently got interested in this game again and this happened! Super excited…

  • Heath Bunch

Now if this doesn’t happen, there will be blood!

  • kmantle

Didn’t they said the same thing about FF Type-0? A trusted source (the director, I think) said that there was a localization already taking place, and that the overseas release was inminent… and that was a few years ago
Sorry, but without an official announcement, I’m not buying it

    • Guest

People said there was a “hinted code” within the data in the game, but they never stated a thing.

    • raymk

No where near the same situation at all.

      • kmantle

        FF Type-0:
An important person says: “The game’s coming overseas!”
But the company says nothing about it for almost a year and a half since its jp release, and we wait

        Bravely Default:
Some important people say: “The game’s coming overseas!”
But the company says nothing for almost half a year since its jp release, and we wait

        Right, completely different situations

Like I said, I’m not going to get excited until SE explicitly says something about a release

        • SirRichard

Type-0 was on a platform that was essentially dead in the West. Before it came out, a string of Square Enix releases (Third Birthday, Birth By Sleep, Tactics Ogre) were released and failed to make all that much of an impact. Why even bother with the expenses of localising a 2-UMD game at that point?

Meanwhile, Bravely Default is on a newer system that’s not only alive and well but also hitting its stride, with a long string of high profile releases lined up to draw in as many people as possible to the system it’s on. They’d be silly not to give the game a shot, especially with the buzz it has going for it already amongst their fans.

So yeah, quite different situations after all. Fair enough on remaining sceptical, that’s probably for the best, but Bravely Default doesn’t have the same issues going against it as Type-0 did.

        • raymk

The vita was a dead system at the time the 3ds isn’t and not only that nintendo said they’d even help companies bring out games over to the west. There’s no way they’d miss this game and even without siliconera staff saying anything this game is a shoe in for localization.

  • Cameron Philbert

3DS RPGs, why do you like to take my money so?

  • Sentsuizan_93

That awkward moment when you hear awesome news like this and your wallet runs away from you…..

  • Beta

Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney and that Detective Conan game still to go… ;_; But good news nonetheless!

  • KiTA

    Great news!

Now where’s my Dragon Quest Monsters Terry’s Wonderland 3DS, Dragon Quest 7, and Dragon Quest X announcements?

  • Rogerrmark

    Oh God.

    Best news ever!

Still have to get Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate and Fire Emblem Awakening here, but:
    Bravely Default:FF
    Shin Megami Tensei IV
    Tales of Xillia
    Soul Hackers
    Rune Factory IV
    FFX/X-2 HD
    Lightning Returns:FFXIII
    KH 1.5 HD
    Fantasy Life(most likely)
    The Guided Fate Paradox
    Disgaea D2
    Project XZ
    (other NIS titles)

Without mentioning the already released Ni no Kuni,Etrian Odyssey IV and Atelier Ayesha.

It’s been for quite sometime now that so many amazing jRPG were localized like this,at the same year, lol. PS2 generation, that I remember.

Just hoping for the localization of DQVII now(and, who knows, even Terry’s Wonderland and Digimon Redigitize,3DS version)

    • puchinri

      Lol, this list. Yea.
I also need to pick up/reserve half of it. There will never be enough money or time (and most of this is just for Summer, lol).

It would be nice to get Terry’s Wonderland announced with DQ7~.

    • OMG. Could you imagine if you got all those on the same day!? Decisions desmicions… But seriously the way i play rpgs that list would take me til’ PS5 to finish

      • Rogerrmark

        I know how you feel,lol D:

  • shadowind

And lo, there was much rejoicing… On another note, where’s my Final Fantasy Type-XIII, Squenix?

  • Thank you Square =)

  • MrBalzac

On the one hand: YES. On the other: the fact that they specified “English speaking audiences” bugs me. I hope Europe won’t get the short end of the localization stick, especially since KH3D set a worrisome precedent.

  • AA

    * Praying to the video game gods to port this game to Vita.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Stop console begging please. If you wanted one game, you should be prepared to support the console where the game is released.

      • Naux

Yea, support the 3DS. Its specs is better in every way when compared to the Vita.

        • brian

Specs don’t really matter (at least a lot less than people make it out to) at this point.
Its library of games matters most and unique features, like having dual screens and a touch screen, help a bit.
edit: I forgot that PSV has a touch screen too, but its games aren’t designed to be played with a stylus so that gorgeous OLED display would be full of fingerprints.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Indeed.^_^ While 3DS had lesser raw power, the fact that i can quickly change my equipment, uses item without pausing, viewing map also without pausing and of course specific game designed to use stylus. I just can’t said that the second screen is a bad thing.

          • Testsubject909

The whole quickly change equipment and all that other stuff without pausing as you put it really depends on the game itself and not on the hardware.

A second screen isn’t a bad thing now. This is just me reminiscing by the way, not a comment on how things are but. Back when the DS first came out. Boy oh boy did nobody know what the hell to do with that second screen or with the touchscreen.

          • Testsubject909

You can easily purchase a stylus for the type of screen that the Vita has. It’s the same type of Stylus you’d purchase for a smartphone or a tablet. They’re sort of cushion-y on the tip.

Edit: And the more recent music games that are available on the Vita depend highly on the touchscreen and are pretty good fun. DJ Max Technika Tune for example.

        • Herok♞

Clearly since specs are what matter most when playing games everything on Game Boy sucks and everything the Vita touches is the best thing since sliced bread. Also instead of worrying about specs you might want to worry about grammar, in your sentence after the word specs the word “are” belongs there not “is”.

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

While i will be lying if i said that i don’t want better graphics here but if the game is good in gameplay and story, even if the graphics is not so good, i wil be very happy to support the game especially if it is new IP.(Not to mention this game art direction is looking so pretty.^_^) Hell, actually many great jrpg last gen is actually just look okay.(Infinite Space, Dragon Quest 9, TWEWY)

Limiting yourself only on Vita is not going to do you any good especially if you are a big Jrpg fans.

          • Testsubject909

I think it’s a matter of financial limitation to some or limitations by principle for others as the majority of our vote for support of certain ideas or opposition can be made from one of two ways: The purchase (or lack thereof) of a product and Bitching. By which I mean really bitching. As in take it out to the streets, send mail, e-mail, make a youtube video, make yourself very vocal so that you’re actually heard by the company bitching… Which may or may not take a very large vocal group to actually do something about it.

I know my reasons for not owning a 3DS is simultaneously my priorities in games and my financial situation.

The only game right now that’ll get me to go get a 3DS is Ace Attorney 5 and SMT4. Problem is money though.

    • Neophoton

Won’t happen with the way Vita is selling. Besides, the game is good enough as it is.

  • Pombar

Bring it to Europe or I will get a US 3DS.

  • yeah! o/

  • Göran Isacson

I… I want to climb the highest mountain and shout Hallelujah from it, but I’ve been burned in the past. I don’t know if I can trust you on this Siliconera. I am scared… too scared to love again!

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

………….U see me here who have been burned again and again into ashes?
Come bro join me in my self torture path.^_^

      • Göran Isacson

Yes. We shall walk this world together, you and I- covered in soot and ash, hoping against hope that this time… this time, Square Enix may give us a reason to throw their money at us.

It’s a fools errand that we’re on, but dammit- what other errand is there for fools like us?

  • Well this makes me happy.

  • Blur Will

Next is my FF5-6r 3DS right?

    • Probably a sequel to this game more like it. At least in Japan anyway.

    • puchinri

I really, really, really want that to happen, for FFV especially.

    • Testsubject909

      I doubt it somehow.

      I highly doubt it.

  • Samurai Don

This better not be a late April fools joke.

  • AndreasStalin

  • Tincho Kudos

Bravely Default coming in the west…for IOS :P

  • MrSirFeatherFang

That’s great to hear. The OST is pretty awesome from the few tracks I’ve heard.

  • Don’t make me happy… You won’t like me when I’m happy… ARGHHHH!!!!! *hulks out in joy*

  • Awesome, I knew all along they wouldn’t keep this in Japan.
Now it is a wait game…

    • Hardest game in the universe. The Wait Game. If played well can have the best rewards but… Man is it hard to play.

  • ShimaPantsu

Great news! This is looking to be a good year for 3DS owners.

  • vileBrenman

Sorry but can some one explain why this game Is so sought after? Is it a through back to old school rpgs

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

This game is like a love letter for us fans who loves FF3,4,5,6 there. The game provide numerous job to choose and the story on fantasy and adventure is like what many of us have keep waiting for.^_^

      • vileBrenman

Sweet I this is added to my list of buy games

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

^_^ Hope you will enjoy the game when they come over. Who knows, when we are lucky, we can even meet up over Streetpass.

Haha well if you live in Florida then maybe. ;-)

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

To Square Enix: They love me, they REALLY LOVE ME! <3

    • Göran Isacson

Ha ha, this fits oh so well… and is just about the most memorable part of that film (next to Cuban Pete). I just wish I could believe as wholeheartedly in this as The Mask believes in his (fake) audience.

and for some music to celebrate:

I’m always very skeptical when any news site confirms something with “trusted sources” that cannot be named. I’m sure it most likely will be localized but until SE officially announces it, I’ll still consider it a rumor.

  • puchinri

Lol,, I am not surprised by the jump in comments since this was posted last night to this morning.

But, yay~! I always felt like it would come over, it was just a matter of when; and it’s really nice to have some kind of confirmation, even if we don’t have an official announcement.

Also, I can’t remember so I’m curious, in recent years, have SQ done the Natsume thing and changed names at all? Like, even names that were already Western? I’m wondering if they’ll translate everything as it is, or if they’ll change some names and such.

    • 4shiki

Dunno if they fit your question, but it happened to Balflear/Balthier and Éclair/Claire.

      • puchinri

Oh, they certainly do! They may be small changes, but still a change (and interesting ones; only one seemed like it could be at all necessary). Thank you for that~.

  • Adam Duffield

Does English speaking stretch over to Europe too?

  • Duc PC-QB

Ok but where is Type 0 ????

  • fireemblembeast

I can’t wait for this game! This year is seriously painful for my wallet…

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    About time!

  • Prinnydoom

    YES ^____^

Hopefully this turns out to be true, I want to play this game darnit! >.<

  • Alexandra Cordes

I am VERY happy about this, but I wonder if they will ever localized FF Type 0…

  • Stop asking bout Type 0. I think over 16 months of silence has given you a clear answer on it’s “fate”.

    • Testsubject909

It won’t stop, my suggestion is to just ignore it rather then incite it. The latter helps you express some of your frustration, and that is healthy, but you then gotta be prepared to either retreat from the possible ensuing storm that’s coming or actually deal with what will happen, as it’s obvious that with or without your intervention, that they’ll continue to ask.

Not saying the latter is a bad thing. I do it myself. But then you also gotta be capable of talking to those who’ll come for a hearty chat.

  • J_Joestar

well that is another 40ish dollars to set aside.

  • Ian Cook

Alot of 3DS RPGs are beginning to make their way over here (SMT4, PXZ, Fantasy Life). I like it :)

  • Sweet! I figured this was coming sooner or later. Although, between this, TWO new SMT games, and the DQ7 remake (which is obviously going to be localized eventually), my 3DS might be looking at RPG overload in the coming year. Not that that’s the worst thing to suffer from. (Fingers still crossed for an FF5/6 remake.)

  • Looks like the change in hands works well for Square. I consider this a victory for those of us who dearly wanted this game to be localised!

    • I wouldn’t say that. This decision isn’t something that resulted from the change in hands.

  • Spider-Man

    This is AMAZING!

  • Alphabet Soup

(dances) This will be a day one purchase! Keep it up, SquareEnix!

  • isotrex

Yes, finally! Now all we need is a date.

  • That’s great news as the game looks incredibly interesting.

  • Space_Ghost

I hope your sources are correct Spencer! I’ve been wanting this game for a long time now…. I think a lot of people in Western territories have. The day Square-Enix officially announces this I’ll be pre-ordering it from somewhere!

  • 3PointDecoupage

Please let DQ 7 be next!

  • Happy Dude

  • One thing that’s going to occur with these companies becoming such low margin is that we are actually going to get more ports because translating a game is cheaper than making a new game for the US audience. It should work in our favor. Can we get Dragon Quest Monsters please?
