Capcom To Slow Down On Digital Re-Releases Of Fighting Games

By Ishaan . April 8, 2013 . 8:30am

Capcom have been releasing updated versions of their older fighting games on current consoles with added features such as online play and various visual upgrades in recent years. Games that have been re-released in this manner include: Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition, Marvel vs. Capcom Origins, Darkstalkers Resurrection, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.

According to Capcom USA Senior VP Christian Svensson, there may not be many more Capcom fighters that are feasible for the re-release treatment.

On the Capcom forums, Svensson provides answers to fans asking about the company’s digital re-releases, and explains the various hurdles that need to be overcome before a game can be re-released at all. He then goes on to mention updated versions of older games.

“New development in the form of updated versions of SF2, SF3, MvC2, MvC1, Marvel Super HeroesDarkstalkers, Puzzle Fighter etc. Sadly, I think we’ve probably run the course of feasible titles here given the droppoff we’ve seen in sales with each new introduction,” Svensson writes.

He continues: “It seems the novelty of such projects is wearing off even within just the fighting game community based upon the sales data of our last two launches. That said, we have been quite prolific in these areas (despite the assertion above that we haven’t) and it’s probably time for us to slow down anyway.”

I know I’m being selfish at this point, but I’d like to see a new series come from Capcom. They always seem at their best when they’re presenting something new like Okami or Ghost Trick.

    • Kaihedgie

Why does everyone like to forget that Capcom is already doing two new IPs?

      • JustThisOne

I suppose there isn’t enough buzz yet.

    • Vesperion

Ghost Trick, Asura’s Wrath, Dragon’s Dogma. Remember Me. Capcom does new IPs pretty often

  • Folk Hellfang

For once Sven I agree with Sven. The ones they have done are plenty, and it’s a fact that nobody needs Capcom Fighting Evolution.
The truth is that it’s time to get an all new fighter out.

    • Yeah, no one needs CFE mainly because it was half assed anyway. It was a real lazy attempt of their behalf years ago to release that. Not that it was terrible but same sprites and terrible stages, basically copy and paste. I would love to see a CFE, a new one, a redemption version of it.

  • Brimfyre

It’s a Damn shame Darkstalkers was at the end of that list. Just means it will be shelved for another 10 years, while they point at how badly the sales did for the re-release.

Also a damn shame they never got around to re-releasing Rival Schools.

  • Street Fighter Alpha 3 needs a release and you can call it quits Capcom.

    • Go2hell66

      no it doesn’t

      • Theofratus ‘Geese’ Lester

And why don’t you think so?

    • Armane

Alpha Anthology with net play, World Tour, and Double Upper characters, then you can call it quits Capcom.

  • Go2hell66

CvS2 then you can stop capcom!

    • Solomon_Kano

Aren’t they already working on that?

      • Michael Cadogan

Only as a Ps2 classic though. Not an HD re-release.

        • Solomon_Kano

Right. So I doubt they’ll go back and HD re-release it since they’ve already got it as a Classic.

          • Michael Cadogan

Well I think the main reason they aren’t making it is because the license for the game expired and SNK for some reason isn’t really bothering to renew with Capcom, despite them most likely wanting to bring the game back.

I know Maximilian (Miles923 on youtube) has a lot of videos talking about the whole issue in more detail ever since CvS2 got announced for the Japanese PSN as a classic. in case people were interested.

          • Solomon_Kano

Oh? Interesting. I think I’ll check some of those videos out.

      • Go2hell66

are they? i sure hope so

        • Solomon_Kano

          As a PS2 Classic, anyway.

  • Ni

I was expecting that they would stop with the re-releases after the alpha series

  • Spirit Macardi

Maybe instead you could do HD re-releases of your good, creative games like Viewtiful Joe or the Onimusha series.

As it stands Capcom, the only thing you make anymore that still interests me is Monster Hunter. Since you saw fit to ruin Devil May Cry, and so far there’s no evidence outside of your word that a new Mega Man game is in development.

I’d be more than happy to give you my money if you’d release more quality products.

    • Solomon_Kano

What evidence would you need outside of their word?

The last time they had something to show for it, both games ended up cancelled, so does it really matter if they show you or just tell you? Because, at this point, I really don’t see a difference — neither one guarantees a release.

      • Spirit Macardi

Still, it would at least be something. It would at least show that a game is indeed being worked on, even if whether or not it would see release remains on shaky ground.

        • Solomon_Kano

I’d rather not know unless a release is absolutely certain — and not too distant*. Situations like what happened to MML3 and MMU are bad for both the fans and the company.

          *Nobody wants a Versus/The Last Guardian-style “It’s coming… eventually!” thing, after all.

          • Spirit Macardi

I guess I’m just the sort of person who’d rather be shown exactly what’s going on instead of just taking a company’s word on it.

I do see the merit in your preferred course as well. It’s certainly bad for a company to announce something and then just drop it, though at the same time a company shouldn’t make plans and then fail to follow through on them in the first place.

          • Solomon_Kano

Don’t get me wrong, I like to know what’s going on myself, but don’t tell me until whatever’s going on is certain to happen. At the same time, I don’t like getting incremental updates either. Like the Versus updates. They were telling us what was happening with the project, but they weren’t showing us anything. Get everything in order before you reveal the game, then start showing me what’s going on.

I can understand what you’re saying about failing to follow through, but at the same time, things change. It’s usually not that simple when a project gets cancelled after it’s already been revealed, so I see that a bit differently.

    • Kaihedgie

If all you care about is Monster Hunter, then why do you bother with this article?

      • Spirit Macardi

Because it’s about Capcom’s future plans as a company, and I’d like them to go back to making more than one series that I like.

    • Quinton Cunningham

Onimusha’s gameplay will not hold up well by today’s standards.

“…saw fit to ruin Devil May Cry”

Yeah, 4 was pretty bad. Thank god they handed it off to someone with some competence to make the new one.

      • Spirit Macardi

It depends on which Onimusha. 1 and 2’s tank controls aren’t that great but 3 and 4 are still solid in the control department.

The other part I’m not going to dignify with a response. I’ve said my piece on it already.

  • Anime10121

    Rival Schools? :(

  • Chris Lane

Rival Schools and Project Justice and then you can quit

    • d19xx

  • Solomon_Kano

Hm. Well, with Capcom vs. SNK 2 already on the way to PS2 Classics, they’ve run out of fighters I’d want again, so I’m cool with this. We got Darkstalkers, we got most of their Marvel fighters, we got JoJo, we got SF3. I’m satisfied.

Now that that’s through, I hope they get to HD re-releasing some of their non-fighting games. Don’t leave it at just RE and DMC, Capcom! Viewtiful Joe HD would kiiiiiill. I’d settle for it landing in the Classics section, but a collection of the series would be amazing.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    Rival Schools, SVC chaos

    • Kelohmello

NO ONE will buy an SVC Chaos rerelease. I guarantee you they will lose money on that. Not worth it at all. Probably the same for Rival Schools.

      • Zhizn Snake

SvC Chaos is mainly an SNK game, though..

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        • DriftSlave

SVC Chaos was developed by SNK, like CVS1 and 2 was developed by Capcom. Both companies have to go through the proper channels to get either game resold even if its a digital re-release. This is why it took so long for CVS2 to come back as a PS2 classic, so no your wrong.

Similarly this is why Marvel Origins only had games with “Marvel” it their title as appose to all the Capcom developed fighting games for Marvel like X-Men Children of the Atom and X-Men VS Street Fighter. Ironically Marvel vs Street Fighter isn’t there either…

      • Tee Niitris

        I would buy SVC :P
Of course that doesn’t mean much…

SNKP would have to release that.

  • Zhizn Snake

After CvS2 there should have been Power Stone and Rival Schools, then I’d have been satisfied. They needed to be re-released more than any of the ones they’ve already re-released. Now I feel like they basically don’t think that they’re worth it, and that they probably never will be…

C’mon, even Sega put up Fighting Vipers…

    • Kaihedgie

Power Stone already has a collection re-release…plus it’s boring.

I’m not takin’ it back. I’ve played both and it’s boring

      • lanmanna

Yes, don’t release Power Stone because YOU think it’s boring. Who cares what others think? Power Stone Collection was only released on PSP, which didn’t allow many to play it. Not to mention, the new version could have online and HD graphics.

        • Kaihedgie

I didn’t say don’t release Power Stone. I said it was already re-released and it bores the heck out of me. That’s it.

Getting all sensitive over nothing. Calm your pants down

  • Tech Romancer! Please consider it, Capcom! It’s one of the best games I’ve ever played. I’d really look forward to an HD release or even a mere port of the game. That Dreamcast classic is too awesome to be forgotten.

    • Brimfyre

I can see them releasing Tech Romancer and not have it being part of their “Fighting Game” series. There is a Tech Romancer character in Project X Zone I believe.

      • What do you mean? Tech Romancer is actually a fighting game, so I don’t get what you’re saying.
You mean Devilotte from Cyberbots (spiritual prequel to Tech Romancer). She DOES SUMMON G.Kaiser / Kikaioh from Tech Romancer as one of her attacks, though.

        • Brimfyre

I know, I’m just saying it’s different enough visually where they might not put it in the same realm as all their other fighting games which has Buff Dude A fighting Buff Dude/Girl B.

          • True, it’s not your average Street Fighter or massive dude & chick brawl battle game. That’s what makes it very refreshing, not to forget the game is very fun and features all sorts of colourful giant robots.

  • Joy Omar

The problem is they keep shoving them down out throats. They are being released too quickly after another therefore over saturating the market and competing with themselves. The marketing strategist of cap-com is simply doing a poor job.

  • Tee Niitris

Nah, the reason it slowed down is because of the titles that were released. MvC1 and Darkstalkers will only do so much when MvC3 and MvC2 (which already has the all-star Marvel and DS cast) is out. No doubt A3 and CvS2 would do big numbers (for a re-release) if done right.

  • Tom_Phoenix

I hope this won’t stop them from doing straight up digital re-releases (as in, not remade or updated in any way). I’m still waiting for SSF2T to be published on GOG.

  • There’s no substitute for arcades.

  • Lester Paredes

Well, if they didn’t release them so close together, perhaps their games would sell more! Geez! I’d love to see Rival Schools and Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Power Stone 2.

  • Valtiel Ikari

when you rerelease Rival School project justice with full localization, Tech Romancer, Star gladiators and plasma sword, then, just then, will I belive your statetement might just be taken into account, mr, svensson (he actually hasn’t show any knowledge in the capcom franchise, and always invent mediocre excuses).
So get up your ass and start working!

    • Yes, Tech Romancer! Rival School, Star Gladiators and Plasma Sword look like awesome games as well :D. If Tech Romancer came on the PSN or PS3, I would be so happy. Hell, I don’t mind the console – as long as it gets re-released or ported HD or not, I’m willing to get it, period.

  • Theofratus ‘Geese’ Lester

I’m just gonna have to agree with these people, even though they said it for me before I could even say it, and say do 2 last games and call it quits.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Rival Schools Collection.

You do Red Earth/Warzard, we riot!

  • Ok, we need to hype Rival Schools so we can a compilation of the first two and a sequel. Quickly, someone get Super Best Friends and the band Rival Schools on the phone, we got work to do ಠ_ಠ!

  • Brandon Domingo

Who the fuck wants to play OLD SHIT? Man for crying out loud CAPCOM stop REPORTING old games that we already have and MAKE NEW GAMES!

  • $li€’ Ri€ ‘Da Rulah

RE-RELEASE the Dreamcast version of Street Fighter ALPHA 3 ‘Saikyo Dojo’, X-Men vs Street Fighter (ARCADE PERFECT), MARVEL vs Street Fighter (ARCADE PERFECT) & Project Justice! Also, being able to play Power Stone’s 1&2 on my PS3 WOULD BE AWESOME AS WELL!!!!!!!!!! Capcom Fighter’s FAN FOREVER & EVER!!!!!!!!!!!

  • $li€’ Ri€ ‘Da Rulah

reading through the comments, I COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT Capcom vs SNK 2!!!! YES, an HD re-release of this game WOULD BE SOOOOOOOO FREAKIN AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
