PlayStation Vita Dungeon RPG Demon Gaze Might Crawl Its Way Overseas

By Spencer . April 8, 2013 . 12:22am

demongKadokawa Games has been more active in the West by licensing Lollipop Chainsaw to Warner Bros. and partnering with Xseed for the upcoming action game Killer is Dead. Both titles are from Grasshopper Manufacture which has a fanbase in North America and Europe.

Demon Gaze may be next on Kadokawa Games’ localization list. The publisher filed a trademark for Demon Gaze in the U.S. for use with video games. Experience, the game’s developer, made other DRPGs like Labyrinth Cross Blood Reloaded and Students of the Round. The question is who will localize these titles? Atlus? Xseed? Aksys?

Ha, and I was just considering importing this.

  • Combo

For whatever reason, this made me remember the Gravity Daze/Gravity Rush name change for the west, and I now wish they would rename this game Demon Gush. This is why I shouldn’t comment on things at 3:30 AM.

    • JonathanisPrimus

      Demon Rash plox

    • Patrick Whited

      Demon Gush 2: The MILFening.

      • Shariest

Why can’t give you infinite up votes?

      • ShadowDivz

        *facepalm and laughs*

  • Wafflenaut

Oooh man, I would love to play this. Class of Heroes 2 and Demon Gaze; my Vita would just be a portable dungeon crawler arcade.

    • Aristides

And there’s a lot of other Dungeon Crawlers in the Vita as well. I just the all the great localized games there and their prices :P

  • Raltrios

Aaaaand there’s one of the games that would make me buy a Vita. The other two are God Eater 2 and Tales of Hearts. If any one of these get localized, I shall seriously consider getting the device. Localize two and my purchase is guaranteed. Localize all three and I shine their boots with my tongue.

    • TheExile285

Tales of Hearts R probably isn’t getting localized:

I got my fingers crossed for GE2 though.

      • Aristides

Given how long Namco Bandai takes to “Consider localizing” tales games it’s no surprise. But I’m sure the’d go for it (WAAAAAAAY in the future) when the Vita picks up.

@Raltrios If you like those game you should really check out the current Vita catalog for localized games, it’s a beast especially thanks to the PSP digital backwards compatibility. Check it out :P

  • Peeka Chu

    Aksys probably.

  • Curan_Altea

That’s great news. The less games I have to import the better.

  • TheExile285

    Holy **** Yes!

I was hoping I’d be able to try this. If it gets localized, I will look forward to buying it.

    – Long Live JRPGs! –

  • 알레한드로

NICE, i was about to import, i was in the checkout page in play-asia and by chance swapped to my feedly tab and see this, lol!

  • Solomon_Kano

Ohoho. I don’t even do dungeon RPGs, but I’d snap this up in a second if it were localized. Make it happen, Kadokawa!

  • gamefreak86

Bring it, my wallet is waiting. I hope they don’t cut or edit anything, otherwise ill import.

  • almostautumn

Great stuff, but I wonder what they’ll do about the explicit stuff? I haven’t played the game, but from what I hear there is actually quite a bit of sex stuff in it, from the dialogue to still-art.

EDIT: Wish I was more excited, but MIND=0 has stolen my FP dungeon crawl desires via localize

    • Mind=0, Conception 2, God eater 2, Phantasy star online 2, Toukiden. Is there some more that I forgot to mention?

      • MXC

Is this a list of games you want or being localized? Cuz, I wish, I don’t think we’re getting Conception 2 let alone the first one.T_T

      • I remember them saying something about thinking about localizing Phantasy Star Online 2

    • AdachiTohru

Mind 0 will be localized, Acquire = Gungho

    • Marik78

Not that much sex stuff in the game, only half-naked girls/boys/demons.
Oh, and that night I spent with Flan <3

  • Ceci “Ruzuzu” Kiyomizu

    I just cried.
    Tears of joy

  • pimpalicious

I’ve been hoping for this one, hopefully it happens. I could see Aksys do this but I still won’t hold my breath until it happens.

  • HassanJamal

Yes, take all my yes. Then when its officially out, then you can take my money.

  • artemisthemp

Hope it will travle to EU also, but sadly fear that certain content will be censor/removed in the EU version to comply with the UK/Swedish Loli law

  • Lazulis

2013, the year many wallets died.

    • Learii

my wallet gonna die this summer already

  • brian

I had this figured as something I’d end up importing so this is awesome news.

  • Nee Nee

  • Oh wow nice to see this over here.

  • AdachiTohru

    Kadokawa > Namco Bullshit

    • Ladius

Since its change of attitude Namco has localized Tales of the Abyss 3DS, Tales of Graces f and Ni no Kuni and is about to release Project X Zone and Tales of Xillia. But of course, registering a trademark for Demon Gaze just made Kadokawa better than Namco Bandai, even if they won’t even be the ones working on the actual localization.

      • I think it’s just because of the willingness to release Demon Gaze (or at least the potential). With Namco Bandai already saying that they won’t bring over any of the Vita Tales games, many people are bitter.

While I personally think that this ‘playing it safe’ is going to harm the Vita in the long run, there’s really not much that can be said.

        • Ladius

People often forget that jrpgs aren’t all the same in terms of localization efforts: Tales games have some of the biggest scripts in the genre, and unlike the Trails in the Sky series (whose dialogues alone are making even SC a distant dream) they have also tons of voiced dialogues to dub.

Localizing a game like Demon Gaze is a completely different thing than bringing here something like Tales of Hearts R, just as translating the next Ys game for Vita isn’t the same as localizing Zero no Kiseki Evolution or the upcoming Sen no Kiseki.

Project X Zone shows Namco is willing to risk with niche jrpg localizations (the fact they’re bringing Xillia here despite Graces f’s lackluster sales is another good sign, too), but the Vita Tales are probably too much for them at the moment, as sad as it is (believe me, I would be the first to rejoice if ToHR was announced).

          • CirnoTheStrongest

Meh, I wanted Demon gaze much more than the Vita Tales games. And Namco’s real fault is they don’t let anyone else touch their IPs even though they themselves won’t bother localizing their stuff. Namco makes TONS of games that never get localized.

          • Ladius

Personally Tales of Hearts R is up there with Zero no Kiseki Evolution and Sen no Kiseki in my Vita localization dream team (even if the Kiseki games would require SC and The 3rd to be localized before tackling them), but I try to be reasonable and I know those games would require a massive effor to be localized compared to the upgraded ports or text-light jrpgs we have seen localized so far, an effort both Namco and XSEED are unlikely to be able to make, at least for now.

Also, while I agree that Namco should let other publishers help them translate the Tales entries they don’t want to pursue directly, I still think treating them unfairly when they’re actually doing far more than other publishers isn’t right. If you criticize Namco for leaving some of its games in Japan, I don’t even know what you should say about Kadokawa’s own output.

          • CirnoTheStrongest

All you see is ‘Tales’. I honestly am not missing Tales games from Namco. What I AM missing are [email protected] and all manner of anime games.

I haven’t seen Kadokawa refusing to let other companies localize their stuff. I’m pretty sure we’ve seen Kadokawa games over here. Namco is at fault because if they won’t localize something of their own, they still won’t let anyone else localize it. They just sit on IPs and prevent them from leaving the Japanese market. Never giving them a chance.

          • M’iau M’iaut

Forgive me but what games aren’t they giving a chance? We got Solartarobo and Ni No. We are getting Project X and even Tokitowa. One Piece games came, and the market said no. Some of the games I’ve already mentioned were brought over by other folks. [email protected] would have content issues to an extent we haven’t seen and trouble like that just isn’t worth the effort.

          • $36598391

I’m hoping Namco will remake Great Greed or at least release it on the 3DS virtual console

      • AdachiTohru

Tales Of Abyss 10 years later without any translation in Europe, Tales of Xiillia 2 years later, most of the Tales Of not getting localization,One Piece 3DS split into 2 games , etc. but of course, its amazing …

        • Ladius

Tales of the Abyss came out in the US in 2006 on PS2 (in a period where lots of games were never published in Europe) and its 3DS port was actually released in Europe before the US. Also, since the game’s original release date was in 2005 your “ten years after launch” claim is inaccurate, not to mention the PS2’s release date doesn’t mean anything when we talk about the 3DS port, and it was released in Europe less than six months after its Japanese release. You’re also forgetting how most handheld text heavy jrpgs never had European translations (Square Enix didn’t even make a Multi5 release for Kingdom Hearts 3D). In fact, almost no handheld jrpgs have even a Multi3 translation in Europe.

Xillia is also coming out so late because they had to translate Graces f before it, and they actually announced its localization before Graces f was out in Europe despite its lackluster sales in the US. What would have you liked more, not having it at all just because they started working on it late? And since you care about European localizations, don’t forget they’re doing a Multi5 translation for it.

Since their change of heart, they’ve also localized Ni no Kuni (a game from another company, again with Multi5 support) and they’re taking a risk by bringing us Project X Zone while most of us deemed it impossible to see it localized, not to mention their usual anime games.

You are free to continue hating them for not releasing every single game they publish in Japan while completely ignoring the differences between the localization efforts required for the games in the Tales series and games with far lighter scripts like Demon Gaze, but at that point it becomes absurd to praise a company like Kadokawa that hasn’t even an official presence in the west and has a far worse localization record than Namco Bandai.

    • In terms of localizing games, Namco is only “slightly” (YMMV) better than Kadokawa. Still better than Sega anyway.

  • Ladius

I’m pleased to see PSVita is a viable platform for niche jrpg localizations such as this, even if I’m not sure we can take a translation for granted just because of a registered trademark. Being optimistic, though, this kind of game is in line with what XSEED or Aksys could pick up.

    • Lightthrower

The Vita is doing awesome in Japan and there’s lots of promising RPGs waiting for localization :-D

  • Ok… Now, where is that P2 rumour system when you need it.

  • CirnoTheStrongest

Yes! Was really considering importing this, now I don’t have to~

  • MrRobbyM

Woop woop! I was losing all faith in a localization. Future Vita purchase here I come~

  • revenent hell

Don’t care who localizes it, I just cant wait to get it :D yay

  • Crazy_O

My Vita needs this! Seriously guys, she is starving. Please don’t take too long.

  • Digoth

    please be retail. please.

    • Hikaru Lighthalzen

    • Hikaru Lighthalzen

still didnt forget what happened with totori plus , yeah please be retail

  • So excited. I’m definitely getting this one.

  • iiiiih, pre-order pre-order pre-order!

  • I hope this turns out to be true. Day 1, and pre-order here =^_^=

  • Wont be getting the vita for awhile but I would so pre-order this O_O

  • wat_wat

Oh yeah! I’m there on day 1. Been sort of going around and playing Wizardry style dungeon crawlers lately since it’s a genre I’ve mostly ignored. Wonder who’s going to bring it over? I know the retail situation in NA isn’t…too hot, but I hope it gets a retail release.

  • Oh yes. Yes yes yes.

  • Andrew McDowell

Oh, please. I’ve bitten by the bug of hope, will I be infected (game localized) or will it be a dry bite (no localization)?

  • ZekeFreek

Agreed, I don’t care who, just somebody localize it already.

  • Lester Paredes

Oh, I hope this makes it over!

  • This is probably the only old-style RPG I would ever play (tried Unchained Blades, hated it) The art is to die for and it having that IA cameo just made the game even better. If this gets localized and has an LE, pre-ordered DAY ONE
