Straight From The Portalstone, Here’s An English Project X Zone Trailer

By Spencer . April 11, 2013 . 9:02am

Project X Zone from Baten Kaitos developer MonolithSoft brings together over 50 characters from Sega, Namco Bandai, and Capcom games. How did Mega Man X and Kurt from the Japan-only game Valkyria Chronicles 3 get into the same game? An artifact called the Portalstone has been stolen and a rift opened that allowed this crazy crossover to happen.

Characters not shown in the video include (original) Dante from Devil May Cry, Vashyron from Resonance of Fate, and Yuri from Tales of Vesperia.

Project X Zone will have Japanese voiceovers and English subtitles. One feature Namco Bandai added for the localized version are dialogue boxes during special attacks so players can understand what Zero and other heroes are saying when they’re juggling enemies.

Project X Zone is slated for release on June 25 on Nintendo 3DS.

One of my most anticipated games this year. really can’t wait to get my hands on it

  • Syde Tokai

OH yes thank the god that they but dialogue boxes when the characters talk. i remeber playing suber robot taisen og endless frontier and haken would always say something to kagura but i never what it meant. i main just thought he was saying something about her boobs and more innuendos.

  • Duc PC-QB

    ” X, do not show mercy !

    to Capcom “

  • Zertan

This is great! I recalled how much dread I felt while playing Excel Saga and not being able to understand what they were saying in battle.

  • darkbartz

Oh that’s pretty cool, I know that a lot of people who can’t completely understand what characters says midbattle in games like this (like me) will appreciate this little addition.

  • Guest

I wish Morrigan’s outfit showed a little more skin.

  • Keima88

I was getting worried that there wont be any Japanese voices untill I have read the whole article. They didnt say anything during the attacks (except for the sounds effects) in the trailer, so I feared the worst.

Its looking good for the 3DS here in europe : next week Fire emblem and project X in the summer.

Now only waiting for Shin Megami Tensei europe release and my life is almost complete.

  • Alex Sargeant

The only thing that makes me a little sad is that they didn’t get to include any Monolith characters. I mean Baten Kaitos was a damn good game. It’d be neat to see some of those guys in it. Or Lost Kingdoms lass.

That aside, how the hell is this actually coming out? That is amazing and impossible.

  • Brimfyre

I like how Sega’s additions are just slaps in the face to Western Fans.

It’s the “games we never brought West” Team! Awesome!

    • Brimfyre

Also, I wish Morrigan’s outfit showed a little more skin.

    • TheExile285

At least we are getting this game. It could have shared the same fate as Jump Stars

      • Brimfyre

Oh don’t get me wrong. I’m super excited about this game. I’ve started my own personal, “Project X Zone Challenge” by playing all the games that are represented that I haven’t played yet.

First up Resonance of Fate, and then I have to finish up Xenosaga III, and I’m trying to find an affordable copy of Super Robot Wars, with no luck.

        • Brion Valkerion

Same here, SRW games go down in price so slow, but almost never for anyone who imports. Things like ACE:R and what not all can be found for like $20~40 imported about half a year after release but Robot wars never… really annoying because I want the newest PS3 one… but not $100 want it lol.

          • Well, you can always join Operation Hotblood and fight for the game’s localization if you prefer a more cheaper but English one to an expensive Japanese import one.

        • Well, if you are interested in the Super Robot Wars Original Generation series in which Sanger Zonvolt appears (who also appears in Project X Zone), well guess what – it has a game on the PS3. Unfortunately, it isn’t localized nor is it in English, but there’s a group called Operation Hotblood who fights for its localization.
I do recommend you to play OG1 and OG2 for the GBA because they were both released in USA in 2006.

          • NTaiyokun

Or, you know, Super Robot Taisen for GBA….

Probably out of print by now though, so you might want to emulate it. Desperate Times call for desperate measures.

          • “I do recommend you play OG1 and OG2 for the GBA”
You know I already mentioned that, right?
But yeah, those games are very awesome as well. Currently playing the first one, and it’s a blast though a bit difficult at times (playing on HARD mode).
However, I do hope and fight for 2nd Super Robot Wars Original Generation’s (for the PS3) English localization. I mean, what’s more awesome than seeing giant super robots pulling off over-the-top attacks of epic proportions in full HD! Nevermind the fact that in 2nd SRW OG for the PS3 you have over 50 giant robots at your disposal, including robots that can pretty much blow up a sun with a giant laser cannon, create a solid sword out of pure fire or ride a giant robot horse IN SPACE.

    • PanjoNanjo

I highly doubt when they were making the game that they gave two shats on an American audience.

    • MrJechgo

Virtua Fighter made it here, Resonance of Fate made it here, Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love made it here, Shining Force EXA made it here, Space Channel 5 made it here, Valkyria Chronicles 1 made it here, Dynamite Deka made it here, Zombie Revenge made it here, Fighting Vipers made it here… Only Valkyria Chronicles 3 and one or two Sakura Wars titles, which got characters featured in PXZ, didn’t make it here.
      So… your point exactly?

      • Brimfyre

I was talking about what they show in the trailer to sell the game to the Western audience. And it was a joke.

        Chill bro.

    • It’s a pretty stark demonstration of just how obscure the Sega series represented in the game are. Namco and Capcom both have characters from franchises that are well-known in the West front-and-center, while Sega’s marquee characters are from games that never even came here. It would probably be an easier sell if they had something like Sonic, Ryo Hazuki – SOMEONE who gamers here have actually heard of.

    • Most ballsy of the bunch, which I like. While Capcom seems to just throw stock crossover characters and call it a day.

    • This game can work as the needed advertisement, so that when they suddenly decide to port all the old games into the next en of consoles, they can now localize them to the west.

  • IkouKuhn

“Project X Zone will have Japanese voiceovers and English subtitles.”
But the trailer don’t have any voice o_O. So I guess that means we can turn off the voice, huh?

    • Eyup. Looks like they did gave a choice to those who hate hearing Japanese voice actors: You either keep hearing them, or turn off the dialog entirely. Put up or shut up!

But I won’t turn it off. Why? SANGER!

  • $39420547

    favorite home console: PS
favorite handheld console: DS —>not for long if the 3DS keeps this up

  • RmanX1000

While im glad that we are getting the game, i still dont know why there is no Sonic in the game… And why no dub? : i kinda prefer english voices.

    • TheExile285

Because that would have been extremely expensive and chances are we would not the original english VAs for every character.

      • MrTyrant

This! most of those game never came in english and being a game specially for fans it’s obvious that it would be really expensive the voice a lot of characters.

      • RmanX1000

I figured itd be something along those lines.

      • Luna Kazemaru

No offense there is so much irony in this comment when you go look at some of the post in the tales thread (not talking about you)

    • Ni

      >why no dub
Too much characters to dub thats why

    • PanjoNanjo

Yeah the characters have a shat ton of dialog, woulda been too much work for this type of game to dub

    • raymk

I guess no sonic because they wanted human looking characters. Same with no klona.

  • TheExile285

I am looking forward to this

  • TheExile285

why is the video quality so bad? is it my PC?

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro
  • That’s awesome. So we will see the battle dialogue. Amazing new addition!

    • MrTyrant

Wasn’t this in Endless Frontier, right?

  • XypherCode

I’m so excited for this! :)

  • BillyMK

Subtitles for the special sequences are a nice addition. That was something I was missing in Endless Frontier.

  • Kaihedgie

    She needs an adult :V

  • Nikokuno

My dear Morrigan, I love Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu lol

  • z_merquise

One feature Namco Bandai added for the localized version are dialogue boxes during special attacks so players can understand what Zero and other heroes are saying when they’re juggling enemies.

I’m really thankful Namco-Bandai really made an extra effort for this.

    • Rafael Budzinski

…man, I’m really thankful as you do. I’ve watched the trailer before read the news and started to think they would’ve dropped all the voiceover since the trailer only have the sound effects…u.u

    • Triplicity

This is the first I’ve heard of it too– bang-up job by Namco Bandai. Fate/Extra was sorely missing this, and I think it was Mana-Khemia that didn’t have it either?

    • Covnam

Agreed. They definitely could have left that out and I still would have bought it, but I’m looking forward to understanding all of the spoken bits during combat instead of just some like in Super Robot Taisen OG Frontier.

  • Zonic505

Glad to see I can understand what characters are saying during attacks now. Plus we FINALLY have English footage/screenshots.

Still holding out on a pre-order bonus &/or that artbook/OST combo Japan got. Edit: Oh cool, we’re getting them, plus a poster. Thanks, Namco!

  • JMaster3000

You know what would be cool?

To post the release dates of games that come in Europe too, Project X Zone including.

There are some of EU peps who read news from Siliconera u know.

    • $39420547

      yes pls

    • Go2hell66

well yea that would be nice

    • raymk

Dates don’t get confirmed at the same time all of the time. Kinda like how Europe had an FE awakening release date before U.S had one, yet we still got the game before you. Which is strange that it happens that way.

    • We do post EU release dates whenever available. However, in this case, one hasn’t been announced.

      • JMaster3000

Well we know its Summer 2013.
At least add that cause some think that the game won’t even come.

  • Ni

I was already expecting them to include this feature since the game will not have English Dubs. Also I’m glad that this is coming one day after my birthday o/

I can’t wait to kickass with Zero, X, Kosmos and Telos

    DAY ONE.

    • raymk

I didn’t expect that after atlus wasn’t able to do it for the Super Robot Taisen game on DS.

      • Ni

I didn’t played any localized version of SRT so I didn’t know this sorry.

  • I guess they didn’t show Sanger Zonvolt from 2nd Super Robot Wars Original Generation for the PS3 in this trailer because else it would explode due to sheer awesomeness.

    • 古戸ヱリカ

They had to cut Sanger, because Sanger wouldn’t stop cutting everything.

  • Sentsuizan_93

This summer is going to kill my wallet…..

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

X_X my 3DS is going to go into overdrive this year

  • MrJechgo

Kinda wished that we get English dubs… I’ve made a list on another forum with all the voice actors and actresses that would be needed and they could all work on the game as a non-union.

    Here, starting with team units:
    – Roger Craig Smith (Chris Redfield)
    – Michelle Ruff (Jill Valentine, as of RE: Revelations)
    – Reuben Langdon (Dante and Ken Masters)
    – Richard Epcar (Demitri Maximoff, as of Cross Edge)
    – Kyle Hebert (Ryu and Lindow Amamiya)
    – Laura Bailey (Chun-Li and Gemini Sunrise)
    – Erin Fitzgerald (Morrigan, as of Cross Edge; personally not too sure about MvC3’s Siobhan Flynn)
    – Johnny Yong Bosch (Zero, as of UMvC3; personally not too sure about MMX8’s Lucas Gilbertson)
    – Terence J. Rotolo (Frank West, as of UMvC3 and Dead Rising 2)
    – Hunter Austin (Hsien-Ko, as of UMvC3)
    – Daniel Katsuk (Ichiro Ogami, as of Sakura Wars: École de Paris; could be Dave Wittenberg)
    – Wendee Lee (Sakura Shinguji and BlackRose)
    – Caitlin Glass (Erica Fontaine)
    – Yuri Lowenthal (Soma Schicksalm)
    – Kate Higgins (Alisa Ilinichina Amiella)
    – Nick Tagas (Toma)
    – Erin M. Cahill (Cyrille)
    – Scott Menville (Zephyr)
    – Jessica DiCicco (Leanne)
    – Troy Baker (Yuri Lowell)
    – Cherami Leigh (Estelle, as of Tales of Vesperia: First Strike; Danielle Judovits could work too)
    – Brad Swaile (Jin Kazama, as of SFxT)
    – Carrie Savage (Xiaoyu Ling, as of SFxT)
    – Mona Marshall (Kite)
    – Bridget Hoffman (KOS-MOS and T-elos)

Only Mega Man X, Kogoro Tenzai, Mii Kouryuuji, Kurt Irving, Riela Marceris, Akira Yuki, Pai Chan, Haken Browning, Kaguya Nanbu, Reiji Arisu and Xiaomu would need English voice actors.

    On to the solo units:
    – Kari Wahlgren (Lady, as of DMC4; she could also voice Jill, as of UMvC3)
    – Jessica Straus (Juri Han)
    – Tara Platt (Tron Bonne)
    – Daniel Woren (Arthur)
    – Apollo Smile (Ulala)
    – Nolan North (Vashyron)
    – Sam Riegel (Flynn Scifo)
    – Michele Knotz (Alisa Bosconovitch, as of SFxT; or Cristina Valenzuela, as of Blood Vengeance)
    – Jamieson Price (Heihashi Mishima, as of SFxT)
    – Luci Christian (Neneko)

Only Devilotte, Batsu Ichimonji, Imca, Bruno Delinger, Rikiya Busujima, Bahn, Sanger Zonvolt, Valkyrie and Saya would need English voice actors.

    On to the rival units:
    – Travis Willingham (Jedah Dohma, as of Cross Edge)
    – Michael McConnohie (Seth)
    – April Stewart (Selvaria Bles)

The rest would need new English voice actors.

    • Bruno Delinger’s VA would obviously be Bruce Willis!

    • Tonton Ramos

Don’t forget Yuri Lowenthal to be Megaman X’s voice consider since Zero is JYB… It’s Lelouch X Suzaku or Yu X Yosuke all over again! XD!

  • Learii

game of the year for 3DS

  • shion16

    Looks great!
Now SEGA,i love you, but i need to ask you PLEASE!!!

  • Eliézer Dos Santos

    Sega highlights: Japanese only games.

    • Also Starring: Bruce Willis as “Bruno Delinger”

  • Spirit Macardi

I’ll admit, the combat looks pretty damn awesome. Unfortunately, it just can’t make up for the lack of characters that interest me. I mean, would it be that hard to add in some more characters for the English release, or even have some new ones as DLC? The ad boasts over 50 characters, but most are from the same game franchises as others. Namco X Capcom may have had fewer characters, but it certainly felt like more since there was a greater number of series represented.

There’s even some meta humor that could be had if more franchises were added. Monster Hunter and God Eater characters could be in a rivalry for being so similar. House of the Dead and Resident Evil characters could deliver scenes together complete with their respective horrible voice acting. Rick from Splatterhouse and Frank West could gleefully pummel the undead together with stuff they find laying around. Heck, Namco X Capcom had a gag where Ki from Tower of Druaga used her Heat Body spell on Arthur, only for it to blow his armor off x3

Just so much missed potential in my eyes. And what’s sad is just how easily it could have been righted. If this looks good to you as-is though, more power to you and I hope you have fun playing it. I just wish there was something in this to get me as excited as everyone else.

    • Just believe in yourself, Carl. Believe.

    • Kronos

It has Soma and Alisa from GE, Monster Hunter doesn’t realy have characters. I can see your point though.

    • MasterScrub

There is a House of the Dead character though. He’s just from a spinoff.

  • HerosLight

Good thing they added text boxes when they say something during battles.

PxZ, Bravely Default, Mario and Luigi 4 would take all my money this year.

  • AuraGuyChris

    Capcom used X.
Bandai Namco has so many characters that it’s hard to pinpoint which one is their main (Pac-Man is pretty meh now), so I’m going to go with Yuri.
And Sega…didn’t use Sonic for this?

    • Sega used Bruce Willis, which is much better!

  • $29082171

Every person who has played this game that I’ve talked to says it’s pretty tedious and repetitive. It also got nominated for kusoge last year in japan, which is the award for the crappiest game of the year.

I think I’ll just wait till one my friends buys it and then play it with his copy.

  • Speedo Redempteur

The music for the trailer didn’t move me..
I know i shouldn’t expect wing wanderer but still … at least an orchestral version would be nice. than this
