Youkai Watch Shows Off Its Town Exploration And Battles

By Ishaan . April 15, 2013 . 11:20am

Level 5 have released a brand new trailer for Youkai Watch, their upcoming 3DS RPG, slated for release this July. The trailer shows off exploration, searching for youkai, battles, and other activities. You can watch it below:

The various youkai in Youkai Watch all have their own moves in battle. Battles are controlled via the 3DS touch screen, where you rotate a dial to go through the different youkai in your party. Three youkai can be active in battle at any given time. There’s also an Aim command, that lets you aim at enemies using the stylus for a concentrated attack.

Youkai Watch is scheduled for release on July 11th in Japan.

Wow, the graphic, the characters and gameplay look nice, but what really got me was the music! Man, it’s like something out of Kitarō.

  • So, the battle goes almost automatically… you can switch and interact with youkais during battles… yeah, I liked that Battle System =]

    and…I owe Suicunesol an apology
Guess the game really was initially developed for Vita, and jumpboat to the 3D
While the graphic is not bad at all (not exactly the best), but guess they switch to the overhead camera to hide some lack of detail
I am not really sure if there was anti-aliasing in the game. There was some alias, but not that much, and judging from the fact that PL:3DS was very generous was very generous on Anti-Aliasing (in 3d, to boot), It is kinda hard to judge
…but yeah, while this still look good, it doesn’t look as good as the first footage showed 2 years ago, even though the 3ds does indeed capable of that level of visual capability (with 3D turn off)…
…sorry Suicunesol, guess you were right mate

    • We didn’t get any footage two years ago, so I’m not sure what footage you’re recalling. All we got was an animated trailer.

What we did have was in-game footage for another game called Ushiro, which was in development for PSP and was a very different looking game. The general consensus is that Ushiro got cancelled/turned into Youkai Watch. Following YW’s reveal, no platform was announced or suggested.

Heh, you still remember that huh? No problem. Just your opinion and hopes. :P

I actually think the graphics look fantastic. A lot better than what Gamefreak showed for X/Y as far as overworld graphics go. The best part is that certain segments of the game allow you to see the world in first person, like the searching through the grass part or fishing. That is just so immersive, and I’m hoping that this pushes Gamefreak to step up not just the graphics but the interactivity in the next PKMN.

There’s definitely plenty of aliasing in the game, but the game’s art style tends to make it less obvious. More detail=more aliasing. The game’s monsters aren’t very detailed and are mostly defined by a few solid colors. And they’re moving all the time. Watch it in 720p full screen and there’s aliasing around the monsters definitely.

The first footage from 2 years ago was quite misleading. Most importantly, it was taken at an HD resolution, showing off all sorts of details in the distance. 3DS can probably do it if you cut some corners, but then it would not look as good as if you had done it overworld style like we see here.

I’m not a fan of the youkai designs, though. I understand the franchise is for kids though.

Interesting battle system, but… the music! It’s awesome! It’s got a ghostly feel to it, for sure.

Man I want this game so mcuh…

This game looks like a lot of fun.
I can name at least a few of those youkai:
Nekomata (the orange cat), Kappa (bald-headed turtle), I think I saw a couple of Karakasa as enemies (umbrella ghosts), there’s obviously the Obake who gives the kid the watch (the ghost), I may have seen one of those fat snake thingies (I can’t remember the name, but it appeared in a Touhou manga once).
I will probably get this if Ninty or Level 5 release it outside of Japan. I hope they realise that there IS a market for Japanese-style games in the west.

Please localized the game. Please localized the game. Please localized the game.

    • Not to be ‘that guy’, but ‘localized’ is past tense, as in it has already happened.
‘Localize’ is the term you are looking for.

      • Fairlee

        oh lol. sorry for that.

  • This game looks pretty fun and I WANT to play it! Lets hope for a localized version!
