If Japan Plays 1 Million Hours On Xbox 360, Microsoft Will Give Free Microsoft Points

One million hours is a lot of video game time. Microsoft is putting out an incentive to get Japanese gamers to spend it with Xbox 360 instead of other hardware. Microsoft Japan’s Aim to Do It! One Million Hours Campaign will reward all Xbox Live members – free and gold subscribers – with Microsoft Points for playing Xbox 360 between April 20 and June 19.

If Japan spends 300,000 hours on Xbox 360 during that time Xbox Live gold members will get 100 MSP and Xbox Live free members get 10 MSP. Reach 500,000 hours of cumulative playtime and gold members net 200 MSP while free members get 20 MSP. If Japan makes it to a million hours, Microsoft Japan will give 400 MSP to gold members (enough to get some older XBLA games) and 30 MSP for free members.

The catch is not all Xbox 360 games are counted towards Japan’s Xbox 360 play time. You have to be playing one of these 20 games:

Battlefield 3
Forza Motorsport 4
Forza Horizon
Halo 4
Dance Central 2
Skyrim
Gears of War Judgment
Crysis 3
Far Cry 3
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
Bioshock Infinite
Borderlands 2
Tomb Raider
Resident Evil: Revelations
Resident Evil 6
Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge
Caladrius
Dodonpachi: Saidaioujou
Child of Eden
Monster Hunter Frontier G or Monster Hunter Frontier

Of course, only consoles that are connected online count towards the total too and participants must enroll in Xbox Live Rewards. Will Japan be able to do it? We’ll find out in June.

Well that’s not going to happen …

    • KuchikiSentou

Seriously. What the hell can 400 MSP get you?

      • Warboss Aohd

minor DLC an’ a xbox arcade game at best.

      • The Watcher

Who cares it’s still free. And besides you can always save….

        • KuchikiSentou

Buying and playing those games costs time and money. Ultimate Marvel is not even on the list. Xbox Live itself costs money.

          • Harley Gorillason

If you’re buying one of these games/XBL just for this competition then you’re doing it wrong.

          • KuchikiSentou

Practically speaking. very few of those games have relative relevance in Japan; I’m criticising the promotion as a whole.

    • akiko_sakuraba

Exactly. XBOX360 is pretty much dead in Japan. Have you SEEN the system’s weekly sales? It’s always the bottom, selling under 200 a week.

      • Pope The Rev XXVIII

It’s sold as well as the Mega Drive did

  • malek86

Sigh. What can you even buy with 30 points? Sometimes I think Silver (yes, I prefer the old term better) users like me are just there to be made fun of.

  • Ace Trainer Chris

The incentive is terribly lackluster, half of the games don’t do well with Japanese audiences and they’re not likely going to start playing if they have online consoles that don’t cost them a dime to play their games on. Japan may have a bit of hatred towards American-made consoles, but they’re at least not dumb enough to see how stupid this campaign is.

    • Hraesvelgr

I think any sane person can see how stupid it is. An incredibly limited list of games and a large amount of hours to get as little as 10 MSP, which will literally buy you nothing. There’s really no incentive to take part in it.

  • Go2hell66

Monster Hunter is on that list? no problem!

man i could single handedly play all the hours by myself with that game :D

  • asch999

MS really desperate to get more people to play X360 in Japan

  • Ben Chau

I really don’t see whats the point of doing this especially when the PS4 is already annouced

    • Jordan Coleman

What the heck does the PS4 have to do with anything?

  • hunterrnl

Is this reward or punishment ?

Wow 30 MSP voor silver people , lets buy a sock for our avatar ! :D

  • Wrathful

They are that desperate? I say good riddance. Have I been wishing this day to come?

  • Andrew A

Don’t spend those10 MSP all in one place now!

  • NEKO WORKING

    lol ?

  • Keima88

If Idolm@ster was on the list it would be achieved very quickly I think ;).

    • CirnoLakes

Darn, you took my chance at making an Idolm@ster joke.

  • Saintdante

30 and 10 for free users? Not sure if trying….

  • sunK1D

Let it die already MS. Let it die…

  • http://ryuz4ki57inenglish.wordpress.com/ Thomas FROEHLICHER

They sure look short of incentives to revive their business in Japan

  • Karl Josef

Even if Micrsoft give free ms points. They still need to play it’s monthly subscription fee hahaha
While on PSN, if your a member of ps+ …
free games every month on PS3 and PS Vita woohoo!

    • Jordan Coleman

Yeah games I already bought a year or two earlier. Gee what a great system. Give me free games that pretty much any enthusiasts gamer will have probably played by then.

      • CirnoTheStrongest

The NA PS+ is fairly lackluster, but I’ve seen brand new games pop up on PS+ in Japan before, and hear that the EU PS+ is pretty nice.

        • Jordan Coleman

Yeah, it’s a shame the US PSN has been pretty weak.

    • Harley Gorillason

You get free games that you have to keep on paying for PS+ to use. While it may be a great service, you’re still paying money for those games.

  • gamefreak86

Hahahaha..*tears wiped* Real incentive to play M$. Almost as good ad my 20 points for my bday. Launch your nextbox there with that start and you’ll win for sure.

    • gamefreak86

      Strat*

  • http://www.facebook.com/VeryMadMage Mick Synodis

Wow! This is almost as great as my 25 cent Birthday present from Microsoft! Also, they really don’t value our time, do they? Do they understand people have but one life to live?

  • NoWayOut

1 million hours? Well that’s hardly fair on the 5 people who have a 360.

    • wat_wat

saying only 5 people own an xbox 360 in japan is being unfair. it’s really closer to 7 or 8.

      • http://www.ihasnowebsitez.com Satonaka CP-Four

I counted 9 but i didn’t convert japanese yen to american dollars and I forgot to carry the 1

So my numbers may be a bit off.

    • Fire.fire.kun

Money-wise, the value of those MSP wouldn’t be able to cover the number of energy drinks those X number of people would have to consume or even their funerals…

  • C.C.

Anyone noticed that most of them are shooters?

    • Alexander Marquis Starkey

There all the newest games out of for XBox 360, the coincidence is that most of them are shooters…if you wanna call Crysis 3 and shooter and not game about incredibly jesus graphic you look at.

  • Lester Paredes

Microsoft’s answer is to throw money at the problem. Well, in this case, it could solve it, if only they’d throw more money at it, instead of the little bit they’re offering. Unless Japan’s XBLA is significantly cheaper than America’s…

  • Freud_Hater

That’s adorable. Looks like someone is getting desperate, huh?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dirtynator-Bouzalious/100000873394234 Dirtynator Bouzalious

Let’s do a few quick calculations.
One day is 24 hours. One year is 365 days. So one year is 24*365=8760 hours.
Microsoft asks people to accumulate 10^6 hours. Considering that each year is 8760 hours, we can say that MS asks people to spend aprox 114,15 years worth of time playing to get 400/30points or 34,25 years to get 100/10 points or 68,5 years to get 200/20 points.

Even though the numbers look huge they actually are not that much if we see the total number of units sold in Japan. I don’t have very accurate data so feel free to correct me but according to a fairly recent report I read that total Xbox sales in Japan are about 1,6 million units. It would be like having each user spend about 40 minutes playing.

However how many of these units represent actual and active users and not consoles that have been replacements for RRoD units or units put in the corner collecting dust is another story.

For anyone interested you can read the report at the last paragraph of this article.
    http://www.itworld.com/personal-tech/335129/idc-total-ps3-sales-top-xbox-360

    • Alexander Marquis Starkey

Actually they meant cumulative, as in Japan as a whole has to accumulate that total, so it would the number Xbox players Japan has (I’ve seen sales for Xbox games hit around 3 – 4000. It would still require their Xbox players to play games a lot…though if everyone who had played Monster Hunter for that time limit, it could be possible to get those numbers MS wants.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dirtynator-Bouzalious/100000873394234 Dirtynator Bouzalious

Of course they meant cumulatively. That’s why I said if all users-players spend as much as 40 minutes playing within 2 months then they will reach the target.

That is if all 1,6 million sold units represent actual/active players which of course is not true. However even if only a quarter of those units represent active users the target is not so far off because it would simply mean they’d have to spend as much as 2 and a half hours playing in 2 months.

Or even if only a tenth of them were active. It would require a bit less than 7 hours in 2 months or just 2 hours every weekend for 4 weeks. All I am saying is that the number is not as big as it seems and that was my point all along.

Whether the reward is worth it or not however is an entirely different story.

  • Aoshi00

Hm.. pretty meager points, and the main list of games is too short, even though they’re great recent releases.. But they should’ve made setting the goal personally instead of collectively, like the US punch card campaign this month.. I’m getting an avatar for clocking in 20hrs of XBLA titles (playing Deadlight, MvC Origins, & Darkstalkers Ressurection which I would’ve been playing anyway, but it encourages me to stick w/ the 360), getting points back for buying 4 titles, etc..

It’s a bit sad because back then we would’ve been seeing director interviews and hot chicks demoing Caladrius or something, I used to check out Inside Xbox Japan almost every other day for the original video contents. But that’s probably due to MS US canning everything (no more Pulse w/ Christina Lee for PSN either).

But yeah, they should’ve made this incentive personal instead of collective, and perhaps better rewards.. Too bad I’m not a gold member for Jpn Live (it’s not worth it anyway like Jpn PS Plus), but I would be still playing Caladrius and Saidaioujo :)

  • Pockystix

I wonder how well the always-online of the next XBOX would fly over in Japan

  • Follower_of_Pram

I don’t have an Xbox, so I’m curious…is this 400 really even a good incentive?

    • Mr_SP

      It’s about $10.

      • CirnoTheStrongest

        No it’s not
It’s about 5 dollars (Well, that’s how much it costs. It’s more like 4 dollars in terms of buying power)

        • Mr_SP

Eh, cultural thing. In America, 400 points is about $5. In Australia and Europe, it’s $10. Not sure how much it is in Japan… According to Play-Asia, it’s about $7.50.

    • Ferrick

nope, at best, it could net you a small game or dlc

  • wat_wat

All jokes aside, 1 million hours in a month isn’t much. They could reach it on Monster Hunter alone, and even if they don’t technically reach it, there’s no way MS is going to come out and say “Whoops, not enough people play Xbox 360 in Japan. Guess we aren’t popular. No points for you!” Don’t worry Japanese players, your 30msp is guaranteed….

  • Settsuo

I…I…. can’t stop… I can’t stop laughing! This is by far the funniest thing I’ve heard all day and I heard a joke about mobster penguins a few hours ago.

  • NightzeroAX

Wow look at all those FPS games.

    • Jordan Coleman

All 7 of a 21 game list? And more then half of that 7 are also on PS3? Yes, look at “all” those FPS.

  • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/ashgail Ashgail

I went out today and found more than £0.50 on the streets. I can also actually use it to purchase something.

  • KingRuff

The fact that you are doing this Microsoft, means that it is already too late.

  • eilegz

that wont happen if they count Fighting games maybe… but that because FGC embrace banbox because its “less laggy”

  • Jordan Coleman

Lame. Can’t even buy a DoA5 costume back with that much points.

  • Neppygear

Wow, this is so very much extremely not gonna happen. Stay delusional, Microsoft.

    • Jordan Coleman

Not sure why it wouldn’t. 360 has a pretty hardcore playerbase. Only thing hurting it is the game limit. Hell, I always run into Japanese players in Left 4 Dead.

  • Kenneth Richardson

LOL free points to buy stuff for a console they don’t play. I don’t see it happening.

  • Aristides

    0-0 yeah…. cool story bro

  • fenix7

Couldn’t u just run the game 24/7 and walk away and do other things?

  • artemisthemp

360 is dead in Japan, so ain’t gonna happen

  • Isaac Newton

Oh MS japan that will not reach any of these game to have an 300,00+ hour…
    You need this games:
    iDOLM@STER
    Deathsmiles
    Oneechanbara Z Kagura
    Dream C Club
    Rumble Roses
(And a F**K tons of visual novel)
One of those game are hit in japan LOL….
If you add these games I’m sure it will hit a wooping 12 million hours of gameplay….
Sorry guys I enjoy the 360 on VN and fanservice games XD

  • http://www.youtube.com/Lyonharvestmoonfan Eduardo Rocha

Not going to happen. Isn’t the XBOX dead in Japan?

  • Darkrise

Pfff- Bahahahaah! No there’s no way that’s going to happen, unless they raise the rewards much much higher.

  • Kalis Konig

About as great as a $5.00 check from your grandma on your 20th birthday.

  • katamari damacy

Does it count if they leave the console on for the entire period? Stand around in a town in Skyrim.
