By Ishaan . April 17, 2013 . 8:10am

First-print copies of Shin Megami Tensei IV in North America will come with a bunch of goodies, Atlus have announced. The first-print run will include a 176-page Strategy & Design Book, a music collection spanning several games, and a special slip cover case containing the entire package.

Here’s a  few details on each item:

  • Strategy & Design Book – Produced by Prima Games, longtime publishers of video game strategy content, and packed with walkthroughs, charts, maps, tips, and more, this official starter strategy guide will give the newly selected Samurai a distinct advantage as they begin their journey through the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado and beyond.  The design side of the book will feature full-color pages of artwork ranging from concept art to in-game pieces to never-used designs from new Shin Megami Tensei series character designer, Masayuki Doi.

  • Shin Megami Tensei Music Collection – Offering a collection of tracks specially selected from across the 20-plus-year history of the Shin Megami Tensei series, this CD presents the series’ musical history highlights from the ethereal atmospheric music to the classic power-guitar anthems. It also includes a special recording exclusive to the Music Collection CD.

  • Collectible Slipcase Packaging – SMTIV will come in a deluxe-sized slipcase package featuring full-color key art designed by Masayuki Doi and depicting the divergent paths of law and chaos between which Samurai must travel and make their choices knowing of the potential foes and allies that lay on either side.

Shin Megami Tensei IV will be available on July 16th. The game is also headed to Europe, but details regarding just when it will be released have not been announced yet.

Worth the extra $10 for sure, I’m really interested in the design aspect of that strategy/design book! The art we’ve seen so far looks great to me.

  • Altritter

I figured it’d have goodies but this is above and beyond what I expected. I definitely don’t mind the $50 pricetag now.

  • benhofb

YES! YES! YES! I may have just peed myself. (IT COMES OUT A FREAKING WEEK AFTER MY BIRTHDAY!)

    • Greg Alexander

It comes out a week BEFORE mine. ;)

      • $36598391

        2 Months before mine

  • KingGunblader

    ARRRGGHHHH NOOOOOOO… there’s another 50 bucks GONE.

  • Hollowkoopa

I wonder if we are getting the 3DS XL bundle. I want that so badly.

  • Vesperion

    $50? I’d pay $60

    • $36598391

be glad Atlus isn’t the type of company that would throw a 100$ or more price tag on something like this out of greed

      • Xillia reference?

        • $36598391

Somewhat, that figure that comes with the Xillia CE would probably be priced $30-50 if it were sold separately plus theres an artbook in the CE too so $100 is a fair price for the Xillia CE

  • DesmaX

Wow, it even comes with a Strategy Guide? Impressive work, Atlus

    • $36598391

The fact that prima is doing a mini guide as a pack in bonus I wonder if there will be a full guide available for it

  • Zonic505

Okay, the extra stuff justifies the extra $10 by a long shot. Gonna have to pre-order this soon.

  • pimpalicious

I hope the soundtrack is an actual OST and not like 3-5 songs. Either way a pretty nice package and I’d pay $50 anyway because, well it’s SMT IV.

    • it probably is only a selection…

  • Ferofax

Oh, Atlus, you clever boy, always spoiling us with treats.

  • D-Rev

I don’t even have a 3DS, and I’m sill getting this….But this news is just awesome.

  • And people complaint about this? I say it’s worth MORE than $50.

  • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

I’m still going to wait until we have official confirmation of whether or not we get the 3DS XL.

    • Tatsuya1221

One of the admins on the atlus forums already said that it wasn’t coming over sadly.

    • Wait, what does that mean? The game can be played in both normal 3ds and XL version right? Or are you talking about some kind of offer where you can get some SMT4 special if you buy a 3ds XL?

Sorry, I’m still new in 3ds area. I’m panning to buy one either the normal or the XL version. The XL version can play all normal 3ds games right?

      • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

A special 3DS XL bundle is going to be released in Japan, and it looks simply gorgeous. I want it to come over, so I’m waiting to preorder.

        • $36598391

Sadly Atlus USA already said the XL isn’t making it’s way outside Japan which is disappointing since I was planning on getting it too

  • Solomon_Kano

I’d have coughed up more than $10 for these extras. Atlus!

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

A Guide Book from Prima games?! SOLD, day 1 baby, day 1. Preordered RIGHT NOW on AMZN.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Only you would day one the guide and not the game.

  • Ethan_Twain

Okay, that’s pretty much everything you could ask for in a special edition. Strategy Guide? Check. Art book? Check. Music CD? Check. Fancy Case? Check.

Pretty much the only thing that isn’t here is free DLC for a special costume or something. If they add that then this will be the alpha and omega of special editions.

Well, and boxer shorts. There’s still that aberration of a special edition.

    • $36598391

      Catherine CE Boxer Shorts ftw!

  • Man, you really have to look hard to make out the English “Shin Megami Tensei” text at all. When I first saw the image, I thought they’d just posted the Japanese box art. I wonder how retailers feel about that…

    • M’iau M’iaut

Well this doesn’t have a bunch of moe girls on it so they might not complain about ‘how Japanese’ it looks this time. I’d say they will be more likely to complain about the larger packaging.

That actually could be an issue in getting folks to just walk in, see that amazing box and grab it. The Gamestops (and everyone else for that matter) have their display and storage areas so set that where to show it off will be an issue.

      • Hmm, so larger packages are generally frowned upon? Is it because they take up more shelf space or is there another reason?

        • M’iau M’iaut

You can’t display them on shelves which are already spaced and marketed for the size of a DS case. Even console sections couldn’t handle the original NISA SEs without a little work. Compare the original Neptune, Ar Tonelico 3 or Rurona boxes with Totori and Meruru. The big box stores can be even worse as the displays double to store the product behind lock and key. Game specific stores may be able to slot the boxes on a side wall or above cabinets, but then visibility becomes a concern.

I am sure most of the purchases for SMT will be reserves and those coming specifically in to shop the title, but I can certainly see it impacting the game having much of a tail. Just look at DVD/BR collections nowadays, overly fancy packaging there has largely gone away for everything in a tight little box.

          • Ethan_Twain

The article did just say that this giant thing would only be the first print run though, right? So the large packaging shouldn’t impact the tail as much because eventually this will run out and the game will just be distributed as a regular 3DS case thereafter.

Just how long does it normally take to transition from a first print run to a second print run anyway?

          • M’iau M’iaut

I’d say it would be very much on a company by company or game by game basis. In a case like this, however, it likely will involve another SKU, which can add some measure of delay to the process. Also, what will the initial run be? If it is large enough that retailers find themselves sitting on any measure of ‘first prints’ they are less likely to buy a lot of a game only SKU. This isn’t a case like Halo or CoD where the SEs and regular editions are sold separate from the start.

          • Mmm, I see. That makes sense. At least the large packaging is only for the first print run, though, so like you said, most of it will be picked up by folks who come in specifically looking for the game.

          • M’iau M’iaut

It’s more than several years ago, but things like the Raidou doll box and Agarest War took up a hell of a lot of ‘real estate’ in most Gamestops long after launch. Just one Raidou box took up the storage space of 10 regular games, which if they were a PS3 or 360 popular title, turned over many more times. So where did they sit? Stacked in the back room, never to come out unless someone asked for it.

Back to the original NISA boxes — those required a drawer all to themselves. Again, when one is counting dollars and units moved, rather than making a collector or hobbyist happy; packaging does matter.

    • aecks

      That’s a good point!

Devil Survivor Overclocked had the tiny Shin Megami Tensei, too, but you knew immediately what you were getting.

Shin Megami Tensei IV, though, would look like some obscure Japanese sequel on retail shelves. I can see how retailers may feel a bit uneasy.

I wonder, though, if that cover could change?

This reminds me of how Girl’s RPG: Cinderella Life‘s cover changed right before going gold, if I remember correctly.

Though, that game was a mess all its own, so I doubt we’ll see something anywhere near as drastic in Shin Megami Tensei IV

      • I do hope they change the cover, but at this point I doubt they will. I don’t know why they would do that. People already have no idea what “Shin Megami Tensei” is, let alone a bunch of alphabets in a language they don’t read. Blargh. :(

    • DesmaX

… Yeah, good point. I mean, the japanese text looks cool and all, but I can see people not buying it because they think it’s in japanese.

And, before anyone replies, I’m mainly talking about people who just goes to game shops without knowing exactly what game to buy

      • aecks

And, before anyone replies, I’m mainly talking about people who just goes to game shops without knowing exactly what game to buy

I mean, people are obviously going to look over and realize what they’re seeing, but that holds true to people possibly overlooking it, too.

  • Space_Ghost

My first SMT game is looking pretty darn awesome. I am truly impressed with ATLUS and the way they treat their fans.

  • kool_cid414

This year is quickly becoming the best year for games and the worst year for my wallet.

  • Juuu

As silly as it sounds, Megaten is such a COMPLEX game that I would really appreciate that Prima book in there. c: I’m OK with this. Slip cover packaging is lovely too!

  • Richard N

Oh sweet, sweet swag. Even though I probably won’t have a 3DS by the time this comes out I will probably still buy this anyway and droll over the manual every single day.

  • AuraGuyChris

Ooh, so that’s why it’s got an extra $10. For a moment, I thought it was because the game cartridge was costly to make.

  • porkiewpyne

Praying really really really hard that this isn’t an NA exclusive.

    • Mr_SP

      Aren’t we all!

  • In case anyone’s wondering, the Strategy & Design Book is 176 pages.

    • r0gamer940

      thanks Ishaan

  • LightZero

If this is why it cost $50 then I’m more than happy to pay it now.

  • Aristides

    Awesomeness :P getting this preordered

  • BoovTheAlmighty

Hope these extras come out in the EU release. Looks fantastic so far!

  • Oh my gosh, thank you so much Atlus. This is so so so so awesome. I am more than willing to pay the $50 for this.

  • Simon

I still think it all depends how big the Book is. for that extra 10 dollar price tag. I mean IMO. starter guides usually suck and give you maybe the first chapter’s guide of the game, which isnt much help. just an attempt to make you buy the full guide. Atlus almost always gives soundtrack as a first print bonus at no extra cost with preorder bonus of artbook for some games as well. Unless the book has substance this time around with a starter guide. I doubt its worth the extra 10. well in anycase. i’ll preorder it :D

    • aecks

According to @Ishaan:disqus , the Strategy and Design book is 176 pages. If that’s not enough substance…

I imagine it’s more design than strategy, though. Specifcially, character drafts and the like, more so than an actual artbook.

Regardless, I think it’s worth an extra $10!

  • Hound

“Offering a collection of tracks specially selected from across the 20-plus-year history of the Shin Megami Tensei series.” Oh my God. If that includes all the remixed music they had on the SMTIV website, I’d have to stop myself from just mailing Atlus my wallet.
Atlus, you reward delivering maniacs. We’re being spoiled beyond belief.

While others might say “here’s a DLC costume for pre-ordering”, Atlus is more like “You got one of our first prints? Congratulations, take this sound track, and this art book, and a strategy guide. You deserve it.”

  • puchinri

Le sigh. Guess I better go pre-order it today or tomorrow. I could do with just a design portion and no Prima part though (did that help raise the price at all?).

  • pressstart

Artbook = instabuy! Or preorder in this case.

  • Raltrios

I haven’t even started my copy on Devil Summoner Overclocked yet, and I bought that right near release. I think I’ll be skipping out on the CE edition for this so it doesn’t gather dust as well…

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

yeah I’m going to be hungry this year……. all of my money are going to gaming this year

  • kiramorin

man i cannot wait to get this, pre-ordered and ready to go, now the 50 dollar pricetag makes more sense but still i would pay the 50 bucks for the game only, glad i get the extras, Atlus once again makes gaming an amazing hobby

  • Pre-ordered and waiting =^_^=

  • Lazulis

Hoooooly coooow, that’s one sweet package. Looks like we’re not getting the 3ds xl though? Curse you region locking, that woulda been the swankiest 3ds xl ever.

  • I really, really want to see this to become available for us in the EU.

    • Belphegor

Doubt it will happen with NISA are handling the localisation over here :(

      • Well, at least the game is coming over! :D

  • Aldorr

And again no word for PAL release =

  • artemisthemp

This edition better come to EU as US 3DS games don’t work on EU 3DS <– Fail Nintendo

  • Will Jay

Now this is what I’m talking about. I’ve missed the old you, Atlus.

  • Cool. Wish I could order the goodies and not the game. No interest in the 3DS.

  • ndjn3979

    Time to buy a 3DS.

Hopefully that SMT IV design XL will also make it over here.

  • SetzerGabbiani

Probably already been said 1 billion times already, but there’s the price justification…actually for an included 176 page art book I would have paid a bit more, but I’m totally happy with this. ATLUS is really pushing for this game’s success. Glad to see that kind of initiative.

  • redhood56

My first SMT game was Devil Survivor:Overclocked. I liked 2(I am still not sure whether to get break code if it comes over here or not). But this looks like the first big production SMT game I am going to play, and the special edition looks amazing!!!
p.s. You can count Persona 4 as a big production SMT game, but I didn’t really like it. *puts up flame shield*

  • Howl

Is every store getting this? or are there stores that might not get it? I just don’t want to miss this bundle.

    • $36598391

Go out and drop $5 on it LoL you still got 3-6 hours before GameStop closes depending on what part of the US you are in

      • Howl

Lol, i will probably do it when i pick up dead island then.

  • $36598391

Definatly preordering a second copy of this

  • I would’ve paid more than $50 for this.

  • Skye Johnson

Already pre-ordered. I didn’t mind the 50 dollar price tag before. It definitely seems worth it now.

  • Matthew McKerrell

i’m willing to bet that Europe won’t get any of this cool stuff and will be completely ignored again.

why Atlus? why do you hate us Europeans?

  • Hairee Pothead

It’s rare a handheld get a collector’s limited edition package of a game.
