Bioshock Infinite And Tomb Raider Lead March Sales In The U.S.

By Ishaan . April 18, 2013 . 4:15pm

The Xbox 360 was the highest-selling console this past March in the U.S., topping sales with 261,000 units sold during the month according to Microsoft.

However, not even healthy Xbox sales and big-sellers like Bioshock Infinite and Tomb Raider could prevent a 10% decline in industry sales as compared to March of last year. On a brighter note, software sales (including PC) increased 2%, which represents the first increase in retail spending since November.

The top-10 best-selling games for the month of March (at retail, as always) were as follows:

Rank Title System Publisher
01. Bioshock Infinite 360, PS3, PC Take 2
02. Tomb Raider 360, PS3 Square Enix
03. Gears of War: Judgment 360 Microsoft
04. God of War: Ascension PS3 Sony
05. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 360, PS3, PC, Wii U Activision Blizzard
06. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon 3DS (Sales: 365k) Nintendo
07. MLB13: The Show PS3, PSV Sony
08. NBA 2K13 360, PS3, Wii, Wii U, PSP, PC Take 2
09. The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct 360, PS3, Wii U Activision Blizzard
10. Naruto Shippuden: Ultmate Ninja Storm 3 360, PS3 Namco Bandai

Reporting period: March 3rd – April 6th, 2013.

The NPD Group mention that both Bioshock Infinite and Tomb Raider experienced the highest first-month sales for both franchises.

Bioshock Infinite certainly deserved the number one spot.

And it’s troubling that The Walking Dead Survival Instinct made it on there……

    • almostautumn

lol; was thinking the same thing. Still; the game does do a couple of things new and fresh, so in some ways it makes sense. Maybe not the best game, or highest budget— but hey, thinking of it like that, it’s kind of cool to see it on there actually then!

    • Aoshi00

Yeah, totally love Bioshock Infinite and Tomb Raider, Gears Judgment and MG Rising as well.

I think most fans got tricked by Survival Instinct because the TV series was so good, so was the Walking Dead game by Telltales. Can’t wait to play Season 2 if they’re doing another one. Too bad Survivial Instinct stinks though, since I like Daryl (Norman Reedus)

      • Curan_Altea

The number one spot is rather impressive given how late in the month it came out. Don’t have a 360 anymore so haven’t tried the new Gears.
Tomb Raider was pretty good though. Nothing amazing, but a great foundation for sequels. And I love MG Rising to death, but that was a February release.

        • Aoshi00

I really liked Tomb Raider, very atmospheric and streamlined, smooth gameplay, good narrative, and amazing graphics, just very immersive and cinematic overall like Uncharted, last but not least an extremely hot young Lara :)

I liked Judgment’s declassified missions, adding more requirement and difficulty if you so choose, plays more arcadey.. also pretty cool to play as young Baird and his Kilo squad (story told in a flashback when they stood on trial).

Infinite looks amazing as well and definitely retained the Bioshock feel.. I haven’t beat it yet but love the hardcover artbook (I was a bit disappointed by the art used for the reversible cover).. Yeah, I just mean MS Rising also being a recent big release.. love all 4 games.. Luigi’s Mansion 2 as well..

Definitely hope Telltale would do a 2nd Season for the Walking Dead. Also I think another reason many bought Survival Instinct was due to its lower price, I think many places dropped to $40 or $30, but that kinda serves as a red flag..

          • Curan_Altea

I just wasn’t very impressed with the story. It was serviceable but didn’t make sense at times. Gameplay wise it’s a lot of fun, I love the cover system they used.

You should really finish Infinite. It’s a great game all the way through with a magnificent ending.

They already confirmed a second season and plan on doing something with the current season as well if I recall correctly.
Season 2 is aimed for a fall 2013 release.

I heard god of war bombed pretty badly…

    • evilmajikman

The game was okay. Chains of Olympus is still the worst. The main problem with Ascension was they replaced main alt weapons with temporary pick ups. The level designs were some of the best looking in the series imo. 1 thing I did like about the combat was the chain grapple button.

Overall, it could have been better in some areas, and could have been worse in others. I’d stick with GoW3 and Ghost of Sparta since the games are mostly the same.

How odd Tomb Raider does well but Square considers it a bomb. What is this I don’t even.

    • 果林

they predicted it would sell around 5-6 million copies when it only sold about 4million last i’ve heard

    • evilmajikman

SE has a ego problem & a massive inferiority complex. They need to realize only very few games sell that well. If they really wanted to produce a game to sell that well, it’d have to be a FF7 sequel or remake.

And that is where their inferiority complex comes in. FF7 was so popular that it dwarfed the popularity that the later FF’s had. They don’t want to believe that their golden years are behind them.

But they have to hold themselves responsible for poor decision making like constanly delaying Versus, making sequels to a boring grindfest that nobody liked, not releasing Agito/Type-0 in the EU/US, etc. Its almost Capcom-level bad choices.

  • Taylor Davis

Bioshock infinite was a master piece. The plot, characters, the soundtrack, the scenery, and the combat was awesome.

    • DCBlackbird

Without a doubt…..though I feel they should have saved it for last…

    • mirumu

I’m kind of surprised at the down votes you got there given the near universal praise Bioshock Inifinite has been getting. Personally I disliked the game for various reasons and didn’t enjoy it overall, but I only know one other person who feels that way.

      • Taylor Davis

Wow, I wonder what I said to make people feel that way. *looks at it again* I don’t know what I did wrong and I just praised it. (I wish people would tell me why they didn’t like it or their opinions.)

Well I will say this the combat later on in the game got really frustrating and a few other things. But I love the story, theres a few parts that confused me and I didn’t understand it, or it felt like it was never explained. (That’s spoilers that I’ not going to say.) (also some things in the story like for example: racism, I didn’t like.) And hey that’s your opinion and I like hearing other people’s opinion. Thank you for telling me your opinion and I understand your opinion :).

  • Spider-Man

    M-Monster Hunter…?

According to NPD’s statement, “solid performance” for MH on 3DS. No numbers stated though.

      • neo_firenze

How does NPD even know what “solid performance” is? I don’t think that’s really something we can tell any more just based on units sold, since we see stuff like Tomb Raider selling 3.4million+ and being deemed failure by the publisher. The #3 and #4 games on this list Gears/God of War have also recently been said to be disappointments from a sales perspective.

MH3U seems like it should have had a reasonable development budget (considering they’re based on the previously existing MH3), but I honestly don’t know what to think about sales numbers these days, or whether publishers had unrealistically high expectations and see a game as a failure.

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Yeah, that’s why I didn’t report it. No numbers or statement from Capcom means we have no idea what NPD were comparing the game to.

That said, I would imagine Capcom’s expectations of MH in the West aren’t bloated. Capcom USA seem to have a pretty good idea of how niche the series has been, and also that MH3U is basically an updated version rather than a whole new game.

In Japan, though, 3U has exceeded expectations.

      • Spider-Man

Huh, well that’s good enough for me. Hopefully it leads to us getting MH4.

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

MH4 was probably always going to come over regardless. 3U is an update without online. MH4 is the next major game.

  • brian

Any idea if Telltale Walking Dead did better than Survival Instinct?

  • Kenneth Richardson

Tomb Raider charted at #2 and still didn’t sell well enough for Square Enix.

  • eilegz

2 great games yet failed to be successful and do not meet the expectations.

If this its not a sign, i dont know what it is… The industry need to realize soon or next gen its going to be dead on arrival

  • Hossi Blumengaarten

we need to destroy the industry to build it back up and ruin all those damn publishers like EA
