Microsoft’s Xbox Reveal Scheduled For May 21st

By Ishaan . April 24, 2013 . 10:20am

A next generation Xbox will be revealed on May 21st, Microsoft have hinted via an invite sent to press. The proceedings will take place at an event called “A New Generation Revealed,” which will take place at Microsoft’s campus in Redmond, Washington.

In addition to members of the press being invited to the live event, Microsoft will also stream the proceedings on Xbox.com, Xbox Live and Spike TV in the U.S. and Canada.

In a blog post Microsoft say they will share their vision for Xbox at this event, and then follow up at E3 19 days later with a showcase of their full line-up of games.

I think they should probably wait until E3 since it is soon.
And never knew they were neighbors with Nintendo.
    Pretty small world.

    • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Why, this would enable them to focus more on games and features at e3 with the weeks leading up to e3 full of tech speak and other things of behind the scenes interest.

      • Never

        Right.
        Games… from Microsoft.
An E3 only about FEATURES might as well be confirmed.

      • Mir Teiwaz

If by features, you mean spend 30 minutes talking about their next gen Kinect, then that would probably be accurate.

    • andref

I think this actually is a good idea for one specific reason
We get to see the reveal and what Microsoft has to offer us but at the same time we only get a little taste of the future of Xbox and only have to wait less than a month before E3 to get the full vision.

Hopefully we may get some actually gameplay footage or engine footage along with perhaps a glimpse of the console.
We will start talking about the console, likes and dislikes, and with the short waiting period till E3 the first reveal stays fresh with little time for it to fade from our minds

    • sunK1D

MS’ been in Redmond since the beginning oO

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Wow this is exciting cant wait to see what new IP’s are brought to the table.

    • Trepie

      Don’t get your hopes up…

    • Charmchar

Halo 5 (is a given), Gears of war sequel (Maybe but without a doubt coming sooner or later), Forza Motorsport 5 (Maybe?), oh and let’s not forget about Call of Duty.

Sarcasm aside i really want to see a new Forza :D!

      • XYZ_JolteonZ980

5za should be great, I hope we get it up against GT6 in the same year, its good seeing the competition between the two titles and features.

        • Solomon_Kano

          Ha. 5za. I like that.

        • Charmchar

I actually prefer GT6 for personal reasons but it would be nice to see which one is better. Though in the end it doesn’t matter because they’re both two great games to play.

  • Scarletmoonwish

Wow I hope screwattack, live steam the conference with nico chat bar on the side, like they did with the PS4 announcement. It was pretty entertaining to read the reactions on a rather long and boring conference.

  • shaolinsword

I hope they can at least match what Sony have done, I’ve missed my 360 lately

  • EdgeKun

There’s two things I’m really hoping we hear at this reveal. The first is (obviously) no always-on DRM. (Seriously, even for a fanboy such as myself that is a complete dealbreaker on buying a nextbox.)

The second is for backwards compatibility. I’d imagine that whatever the 360 is running would be easier to port to x86 than Cell instructions, so I’d like to think that this isn’t too farfetched.

If they make these two announcements, I’ll most definitely be onboard. :D

    • malek86

The X360 used a sort of PowerPC architecture. I doubt it would be easy. Probably, at best we can hope for software emulation, like with the original Xbox. But I don’t know if that would be their focus.

      • Barrylocke89

Solid Backwards compatability seems to rarely be a focus of new game systems these days anyways. Better hold on to your old consoles for awhile longer, peeps!

        • Vash bane

          i know i am

    • mirumu

The 360′s Xenon CPU would not be easy to emulate. The rumors suggest the new console will have an AMD Jaguar CPU, and only time will tell if that’s fast enough for software emulation. My guess is they’d either go the route Sony did with the PS3 and include a die shrunk Xenon as a module on another chip, or if they keep their API similar enough, have developers release 360 games recompiled for the new CPU on the online store (sort of like the PS2 classics on PSN).

Another rumor suggested there may be different versions of the console. A low priced one that wasn’t backwards compatible at all, and a more costly one that would include full backwards compatibility. I could see that being a viable strategy. I suspect consumers would like being given the option to just pay for the level of functionality they want.

      Guess we’ll know soon.

      • Solomon_Kano

There was also a rumor that it wouldn’t have BC, but they’d release a “Xbox Mini” on the cheap to offset that for the people who want BC.

        • Shariest

Oh, kinda like Wii Mini or stuff?
Version that yells “If you didn’t get it then, get it now!”

          • Solomon_Kano

            Exactly.

          • Shariest

Hmh…My xbox did die just few days ago…

  • DesmaX

Oh, hope this will prove to be a fair rival to the PS4.

And, can I hope they confirm offline mode?

    • benhofb

The whole online-always rumor really chomps at my bits. I don’t see who would want that…

      • Prungy

The rumor of an always-online requirement is likely true. Apparently, with the new Xbox, all games will be installed to the hard drive (less load times), and you will be able to suspend your game at any time and start another game (no disc swapping required).

However, I don’t see Microsoft allowing these things without requiring an internet connection to ensure everyone is playing legit copies.

Additionally, an always-online requirement could be used to enforce the rumored used games ban…

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

    And so it begins lol

  • Hollowkoopa

I also heard rumors of them using a custom windows 8 for the system.

    • PinkKat

I doubt they would use a modified W8. Maybe the same kind of UI, ie Failtro so they can continue throwing ads in our face even though we throw money at them to even use full functionality of the 360 :/

      • mirumu

I think it’s pretty much 100% certain it will be a modified Windows 8 under the hood at least. They’ll certainly tweak the UI for the purpose, it may not even look anything like Windows 8, although personally I think they will prominently feature the Metro look because they’re doing that everywhere right now. The more similar they can make the API, the easier it is to encourage developers to support the platform.

The 360 was based around the NT kernel from Windows 2000 which made sense at the time, and Windows 8 looks to be the most appropriate product to fill that same niche today. Windows 8 has a more lightweight footprint than their older operating systems so is ideal for console use. I’m not even sure what else they actually could use to be honest other than continuing to evolve the old 360 OS in parallel, but that would be a lot of work.

  • Settsuo

I wish them well, but I’ve never been a fan of the whole Xbox brand. I hope the rumors aren’t true however as that’ll really put developers into really tough positions financially and I hope to avoid the nerdpocalypse that’ll occur if said rumors turn out to be true.

  • PinkKat

Hopefully this will put the rumors to rest and show us which direction they want to take. Its blindingly obvious Sony and MS are going two different directions with their consoles besides the gaming aspect.

I doubt they will mention anything about always-on or used game blocks unless they dismiss the claims.

They wont go “Oh hey, look at this awesome console and what it can do!….but psst, you are in our little jail” and shoot themselves in the foot @ reveal.

  • Go2hell66

I just hope they give us the price as well, i really need to brace myself for 2014

  • http://simplephilistine.wordpress.com/ Arla

I can’t imagine all that forced online and no used games crap being true. It’s always exciting when new consoles are revealed so even though I won’t be getting a PS4/Next-box anytime soon I’m very excited to see what microsoft does with this system. Although all those ads and pizza hut app crap on the 360 do have me a bit worried.

    • Aoshi00

Yeah, hope it’s not always online either.. the stupid “Deal with it”..

I’m not sure how much the food ordering service thru console has caught on. The Jpn Wii actually had the same feature, let you place order on all kinds of food.. and it’s easier to just do it on the computer or on the phone.. I don’t even have a Pizza Hut anywhere near me, usually get za from Papa John’s :)

I’m not sure if I would get it right away until there are killer apps.. I got the Wii U for Mario and been letting it sit there for months now, like my iPad…

      • http://simplephilistine.wordpress.com/ Arla

Haha yea man impulse buys or early adoptions are usually never a good idea. I bought a 360 for no real reason a couple months ago and recently got rid of it since I didn’t use it. I’ve already posted on another story on how I’m waiting for the fall/holiday to get a Wii U. A lot of the kinks should be worked out by then and their should be enough unique titles and multiplats to justify it for me.

And while I probably should’ve used another word besides “worried” I don’t really care about social apps/ads plastering a home screen. As long as their are cool games for the systems I’ll buy one, the game and just boot right into it. I rarely ever check anything else out on my PS3 or 360 when I had it besides Netflix.

        • Aoshi00

yeah, sometimes if you’re not dying to play a game on a system, better wait for a better valued bundle.. maybe a Bayonetta 2 or Zelda one.. I’m not too crazy about every time I pick up the controller pad the battery’s drained dead.. and the Pro controller won’t work w/ Mario..

Same here, I usually just watch movies on Netflix or Amazon Instant, or maybe VUDU w/ those apps.. 360 has been my main machine this gen though, so I’m looking forward to 720 or Nextbox :) I mostly use my PS3 for blu-ray movies or Netflix.. I love the bluetooth remote I don’t need to point it to the machine..

Xbox Live used to have lots of great original video contents, now it’s nothing but intrusive ads.. looks like it would continue to be that way.. as long as each system has great games that’s alright by me.. I’ll try my best to reign in my impulse buy.. I kept telling myself I would never do it again after buying PS3 at launch, then I did it again w/ 3DS (huge price drop) and Wii U… truth is I have a huge backlog for my PS3/360/Wii/Vita/3DS/DS/PSP :(.. there’s really no shortage of games.. I only beat a fraction of the games I buy… I do like streaming movies on the consoles though.

          • http://simplephilistine.wordpress.com/ Arla

There is already a decent amount of stuff for Wii U I want and I’ve held out on buying some multiplats so I could also buy those for the system. The two major updates all the eShop stuff and Nintendo TVii content will all be nice and ready by the holidays so I won’t have to wait for updates and shit. Bayonetta 2, X, SMT x FE and all the 1st party games from the series I love more than justify the system for me. Oh yea can’t forget MH3U.

I just happened to get a PS3 first. I know a lot of people who got the 360 early this gen and that’s their main console now. I rarely play online so paying for Live doesn’t bug me. It’s needing Live for Netflix that really killed me on 360. So that plus no bluray made me go with PS3 for my games and media. Though I will eventually get a 360 for some early exclusives and Bayonetta because I dont wanna play it on PS3.

My backlog is average since I’ve gotten rid of a lot of games. My patience is a lot shorter now so if I game doesn’t catch my interest fast I move on. That was my way of dealing with the backlog I had.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Still a month away, but this is the time for Microsoft to put all the haters and critics in their place by showing that they’re still a serious threat for this upcoming next-gen. Though, I really, really hope for their sake that they’re giving legitimate info. No smoke, no mirrors, no shiny ponchos, no random celebs, no circus acts. I would like to see them put on their real game face.

  • J_Joestar

Wonder if it’ll be close enough to the PS4 so i can get through this gen with only a Nintendo console + one other like the last gen with the Wii+360 set up.

  • http://www.segalization.com/ Kuronoa

Not much of a XBOX fan, but I’ll see what catches my attention.

    • Shane Guidaboni

Same. Their exclusives aren’t anything I’ve ever wanted, and anything on the Xbox I can likely get for my PS3. Never saw a reason to buy one.

      • http://www.segalization.com/ Kuronoa

Most of the games I want are the Treasure games, retail wise the only real eye catcher is Lost Odyssey.

  • SirRichard

Alright, about time they decided to make their move. The world’s waiting with bated breath to gut you like a fish, Microsoft, you’d better not disappoint. I’d normally not put any stock in the more extreme rumours going about (as I didn’t for the PS4), but frankly with that outburst from one of their directors on Twitter a while back, it’s not encouraging.

  • 果林

i swear the only thing they’re gonna reveal is the fken controller like sony did

    • DCBlackbird

but Sony revealed the capabilities of their console which we all wanted to see, are you really upset because they didn’t show a box?

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

(;一_一) Lets see what you got Microsoft. I’m not a fan but I hope the always online rumors are false.

  • Strid

They lost me when the first thing I heard about it (from them) was “living room integration” instead of video games. It also didn’t help that I’ve gone through 3 Xbox 360 consoles and prefer my FPS games on a PC, where they belong in the first place.

  • CirnoLakes

Well that was… earlier than expected.

  • Qwert

    What expect: ???
    What don’t expect: jRPGs

  • Solomon_Kano

Always exciting to see a new console revealed. I’m just kinda sad that we pretty much know what games we’ll see already. Halo 5 tease, Forza tease, Crytek’s Ryse for Kinect.

That said, I’m certain there will be at least one new IP with Black Tusk/MS Vancouver having been toiling away on their title for years, sadly they’ve already hinted at it being an FPS by saying they’re after the next Halo. Why juggle two FPS IPs? MS could use a nice action game in their lineup.

The real thing here will be whether or not those rumors are true. Though I take them all with a grain of salt, I haven’t heard a good rumor about the Nextbox yet and at least one of them is going to stick. The PS4 controller thing stuck, after all. Let’s see how May 21st goes, MS. I’m watching you.

  • Sergio Briceño

I know that whether they go the “new entertainment experience” route or the “it’s all about games” route I’m still going to like it. It’s just that I think I need the next Xbox to not focus solely on games like everybody wants it to.

You are free to hate my comment and down vote it. I know that even if you don’t down vote you still probably hate it. The reason I think this way is because nobody thought how important pushing the living room experience was 7 years ago, they just ackowledged it’s importance recently and if it wasn’t because of Sony or Microsoft we would still be “just” playing games.

I know I would LOVE a game centered reveal right now but I know that eventually I’d also LOVE my next generation console because it lets me do more. Also, once the games become too expensive to develop I’d be looking for new experiences aside from the more graphic demanding ones and maybe get a Kinect 2.0 or an Illumiroom (yeah I really wish they finally show at least one of them for real).

    There. My honest opinion.

  • Zenthos

No thanks Microsoft, you’ve already proved to me that I don’t need to purchase your console due to the “online all the time” requirement.

    • mirumu

If the new console won’t play games without being online, then I’ll happily be one of the first to join the boycott. We simply don’t know what their plans are yet though. I’m willing to cut them some slack until they confirm for sure what they’re actually doing.

The PS4 was rumored to be always online at one point too, but thankfully that turned out to be false.

  • Raze

    My place connection isn’t reliable…
    i’ll not buy a phone?
    NO!!
    I’ll not buy your xbox…

    Ruh-roh…

    Debate storms are a-brewing.

  • Christopher Nunes

An announcement on my birthday, eh? Hopefully it’s something good! I haven’t touched my Xbox in months! Please let the next Xbox be better!

  • NightzeroAX

Only games that interested me on XBOX was Tales of Vesperia which should have been on the PS3 since it spawned but whatever there’s a better version of it, and Infinite Undiscovery. Hearing rumors about this console being online only is… yeah we’ll see.

  • http://twitter.com/HaohmaruHL HaohmaruHL

sure, because one CoD machine is not enough for now..
and please don’t tell me there are other games people play on it

  • りんごタルト@エスカのアトリエ

New Xbox will be called CableBox. Heard it here first.

Sadly you need internet to watch the stream, but guess I just #dealwithit
