Last week, Nintendo released Tomodachi Collection: New Life in Japan, which was the best-selling game for the week. In case you don’t know what the Tomodachi Collection games are about, looking through this explanation before you read any further might help.

Tomodachi Collection: New Life sold close to 405,000 copies in its first week on store shelves. That’s a significant improvement over the original Tomodachi Collection on Nintendo DS, which sold around 102,000 copies at launch.

The increase in launch sales can be attributed to fans that liked the first game putting their money down early for the new one. Even with its slower start, the first Tomodachi Collection eventually reached sales of over 3.7 million in Japan, so the second game can draw from a large audience that is now familiar with the series. Additionally, games with a social element tend to do particularly well on the 3DS, so it should be interesting to see how sales hold up going forward.

At #2 was Namco Bandai’s Naruto Shippudden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3. The game sold 87,661 copies in its first week and was followed at #3 by 7th Dragon 2020-II, developed by Imageepoch and published by Sega for the PSP.

7th Dragon 2020-II sold nearly 74,000 copies in its first week. Unfortunately, that’s a lower debut than its predecessor, 7th Dragon 2020, which was released in November 2011 and sold 122,498 copies at launch. Furthermore, sales of 2020-II were even lower than those of the original 7th Dragon game on Nintendo DS. That game sold nearly 80,000 copies in its first week.

The top-20 chart for the week was as follows:

Go Tomodachi Collection and 7th Dragon~! I’m glad they did that well (especially TC). (Nice to see Luigi’s Mansion and AC continuing so well too.)

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

12 more weeks until Wii U gets its first mln, its hitting its stride nicely.

I guess Naruto Shippuden performed with the same level of popularity as the manga sales ratio of one piece and naruto in jpn. Hope it continues to do well. Vanguard too.

Every time I see Japanese game sales, it makes me happy and also a bit jealous of the diversity of the games in top 20.

  • malek86

So the PSV seems to be settling around 15k. I thought it would be a little higher, but I guess it hasn’t had any real big hitter.

    • TiredOfMyOldUsername

It’s still nearly double what it was before the price drop at least.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Tomodachi Collection: New Life is like AC+Sims right?

  • Ethan_Twain

Lol, what’s Run for Money doing back at number nine? I thought we had finally put that aberration to rest.

    • I love seeing it pop up occasionally, just for laughs.

  • Suicunesol

It looks like the 3DS, particularly the XL version, saw a sizable boost in sales last week. I’m assuming Tomodachi Collection must have appealed to a female audience that was not also part of the Animal Crowd crowd?

    • They released a new XL system last week, too.

      • Suicunesol

-_- Oh well that explains it. Shoulda mentioned that.

  • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

How the hell can something like Tomodachi Collection sell so.freaking.much? Also, I’m sort of disappointed that the PSV went back to poor numbers. 15k is certainly better than what it used to do, but it’s still quite poor for a relatively new system. I’d have hoped for it to settle above 20k~.

    • huh, PSV is not a new system, its already out for more than 1 year -_-

    • Ferofax

It’s a life sim. It’s like Sims, but cuter, and portable but not skimped out on features (unlike most ports).

If you do not understand the charm of life sims and sandbox games, it’s best to just nod it off as some weird stuff that happens in the world. It’s normal for people to like certain genres and be totally clueless on others (i myself don’t see what people like about sports games, especially the irony there).

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

It seems all that marketing and focus on Nintendo Direct seems to really pay-off for Nintendo here.^_^
And considering the last instalment of Tomodachi Collection is able to reach i think 1 million and a half? I want to see how far this game can go here.^_^
7th dragon gives me a strange vibe here. While i can not say that the number is totally bad but it is also not really looking good here.T_T I think currently, Sega will need to decide on whether to move the series to 3DS or Vita here as it seems that the series already overstayed it’s time on PSP here.

  • s07195

Run for Money, back on the list. 0_0

  • Göran Isacson

Soul Sacrifice just keeps on slipping down, Muramasa seems to be on it’s way out of the charts too… and Sword Art Online is STILL selling. Guess there must be some qualities to the game more than just a quick cash-in if it’s almost selling as much as KH 1.5 HD Remix.

And Run For Money again… I wonder what demon lord those guys sold their soul to for sales like these.

  • komiko12

    Golden Week is coming up!

  • Tails the Foxhound

404k launch week… holy hell… I’m sorry, that wasn’t aptly put, lemme try again. Holy hell! (Nope, still came out the same.) One can only wonder what this will top out at when the 3DS is finally yesterday’s news.

  • Kioku

Wii U sales are still incredibly low…

  • Solomon_Kano

DAMN Tomodachi is big. I’m picturing Animal Crossing-level chart longevity here. Dear heavens, what kind of power might Golden Week add to it!?

Aaaand the XL’s going to cross 3 mil this week. Nice, nice.

Also: what the hell happened to Sol Trigger being Imageepoch’s last PSP game?
