Spike Chunsoft Remade The Game That Inspired Virtue’s Last Reward

kamitachi_01 If you enjoyed either Zero Escape: Nine Persons, Nine Hours, Nine Doors or the sequel Virtue’s Last Reward you should check out Night of the Sickle Weasel. This sound novel from Chunsoft is one of the main games that inspired Kotaro Uchikoshi while he was creating the Zero Escape series.

Night of the Sickle Weasel takes place in a ski lodge where a murder has been committed. Your goal is to catch the culprit. The game has multiple endings depending on who you pin as the killer. Players solve the mystery by running down alternate routes and gaining clues each time that lead to the solution. Night of the Sickle Weasel: Smart Sound Novel has the same story with all new graphics and an orchestral score. The Super Nintendo version (and proceeding ports) had eerie blue character silhouettes. The iOS remake has HD quality backgrounds and swipe controls to flip through the story.

Smart Sound Novel is a new series for Spike Chunsoft and Night of the Sickle Weasel is the first game to get this treatment. Uchikoshi said he believes smartphones are a good platform for adventure games so maybe we’ll see a port of Zero Escape here in the future.

Night of the Sickle Weasel: Smart Sound Novel is available now for 1,000 yen ($10) on iTunes.

Didn’t the guys who made Starship Damrey work on this game as well?

    • Yup! Same writer/director. He also did the critically acclaimed Machi.

  • BTA

Wasn’t this announced for US release like… last summer? Is that still a thing?

I’ve been wanting to play it ever since I saw the GameCenter CX episode about it, but it’s been a while and there’s been no news…

    • AkuLord3

Ah man, another GCCX fan…High 5! i also watched it and wanted to play it

      • Testsubject909

Pretty sad that when the GCCX game came to western shores, that they completely removed ALL of Arino’s voice clips and replaced them with some generic voice. And also cut down the content of the game.

        Pretty damn freaking sad.

        • Replaced Arino with Yuri Lowenthall!

edit: What did they cut down for the US release? I really want to play the second game, for the Saburo Jinguuji-style detective adventure.

        • BTA

Apparently the DVDs that came out here can be watched without any of the dub content, and even have subs by one of the translators who does them over at SA! So you might want to check that out.

Unfortunately, it also apparently doesn’t have anything other than the challenges, but the arcade trips, etc. aren’t even on the JP DVDs so it makes sense, I guess.

  • While I usually dislike iOS… this is an example of handling it well. It is a game that truly makes sense in a way to be on a touch device.

  • IvanAzure

Isn’t this an iOS port of the Vita game, “Shin Kamaitachi no Yoru”? It looks a lot like it at least…

  • Alexandra Cordes

I would love to read this… but… two years of studying Japanese does not feel adequate.
    Maybe in a few more years… :D
