Shin Megami Tensei IV Has Some Crazy Samurai Costumes

By Spencer . May 3, 2013 . 1:08am

Shin Megami Tensei IV lets players customize how the main character looks. We’ve seen the gold armor with a big GS from GameStop and the Lawson clothes announced for Japan. This video which shows the Digital Devil Service cards reveals a couple more outfits.

Players exchange Digital Devil Service cards over Streetpass. These show your character’s level, a demon you select, and a canned message. When you exchange cards with other Shin Megami Tensei IV samurai you might be able to do a special kind of fusion. Jack Frost returned with a black card that triggered an indiscriminate fusion that changed him into Shemhazai.

The hero in Shin Megami Tensei IV can use the same spells an abilities as demons. He learns them through the whisper system where demons can pass down abilities they know. When Murmur whispers players can choose a skill like Mudoon or Maziodyne.

I’m also pretty interested to see how the streetpass thing will work out. Maaan, I’m going to be so addicted to this… :/

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      Me too!

  • Saw that picture with the bunny head.

First thing I thought of was Raiden.

Seriously can’t wait to play this.

First thing I thought of was Frank of Donnie Darko fame.

  • Barrylocke89

That Rabbit head thing kinda freaks me out a bit :/

On the other hand, more remix tunes from older games. You can never have enough Arcade Street.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

I want to dress up as a rabbit gundam

  • Tales_of_Master

With all the throwbacks to previous SMT games, and the remixed music you would think this is an anniversary title………..and I love it. Atlus showing the main series the respect it deserves. Here is hoping that SMTV won’t take 10+ years to come out.

  • RoxasTheUnknown1

I really hope this doesn’t mean some demons are exclusive to Streetpass. Oh well. Thankfully I know people. xD

    • Detrimont

Apparently Nintendo has finally figured out that Streetpasses arent very common outside Japan, and are sending things usually obtained through streetpasses through Spotpass instead for certain games in the US and EU/PAL etc

      • SolRevr

Hopefully they will also have the recent play coin feature from Soul Hackers where you can spend your daily play coins to purchase the streetpass content. I will be flabbergasted if I ever get a Soul Hackers specific streetpass even in Boston.

Nice rearrangement of “Arcade Street”. I wonder if they will do the same for “Ginza”, one of the best songs from SMT I:

    • Alberto Maytorena

      And Ginza from Nocturne.

      • Tom_Phoenix

“Ginza” from Nocturne is itself a rearrangement of “Arcade Street”, though.

    • Barrylocke89

Oh god, a Ginza remake would be excellent. Make it so, Atlus!

  • Sergio Briceño

Just if the first print/preorder/retailer exclusive costumes didn’t seem stupid enough of an idea… Atlus shows us the best costumes are already in-cartridge.

  • Jonattas F.

So you are a samurai living in a post apocalyptic world dressed up in a bunny costume… You gotta love Japan!

  • Spider-Man

Good thing I live in NYC, I streetpass so many people all the time.

  • ShinGundam

Funny, how they put bunch of words that have no meaning or context for the game in the last video. I mean “الرعاية الطبية ” translate to “Health care” XD

    • They have a whole bunch of stuff from random languages. Hindi, Arabic, Japanese, another one that I didn’t recognize. Most of it, save for the Japanese stuff, is random words/gibberish. :P

  • I’m going to be so addicted to this game.

  • Alberto Maytorena

    No haircuts yet? ):

  • brian

Hey in the first video, TestSubject is at 0:33, maybe he’s famous.

  • Is the fairy in the first video Titania? Why in the world did they switch back to an older design?

    • Ethan_Twain

In which installments did she look different? That’s definitely how she looked in Strange Journey.

      • Huh, really? There’s her Nocturne/Persona designs, too. I guess I’m just wishing that the art was updated a bit, as those are the very old drawings from waaaay back when.

        • Aerozeta

I liked the Nocturne/Persona designs better… This one looks like an outdated evil fairy queen or something. I would have thought that SMT IV would either carry over designs from Nocturne or change and add new ones… not change existing newer designs into older designs from Soul Hackers and Strange Journey, whatever.
