3D Altered Beast Roaring On To Nintendo 3DS Next Week

By Spencer . May 22, 2013 . 1:18am

imageSega is continuing their series of 3D enhanced games with Altered Beast. This is the Genesis version and not the arcade version so it won’t have the silly ending sequence with a dude taking off the beast costume in front of a director’s clapboard.

3D Altered Beast supports local co-op if both players own the game and has a new "whimsical transformation" mode too. Sega hasn’t said what actually happens in the bonus mode.

M2 added the usual features, stereoscopic 3D with options for depth or zoom, button remapping, a tube TV display mode, and the ability to play the Japanese ROM or the international release. The 3D effects in 3D Sonic the Hedgehog were pretty weak so I’m more hesitant about picking this up since it’s another Genesis port. 3D Altered Beast comes out in Japan on May 29 as a 600 yen ($6) eShop download.

Played the genesis collection version, was so freaking bad ass. Nice to see this classic live on.

Why does Japan get Sega 3D Virtual Console but not USA.

    • Armane

It’s the Ages 2500 series all over again.

      • http://www.googlepants.com/ Wizard of Odyssey

It releases in the USA today! I have bought these games so many times already, but what’s six bucks?

        • Armane

7 months is a long time for something that requires next to no translation work.

          • http://www.googlepants.com/ Wizard of Odyssey

7 months is not a long time for Nintendo USA’s product manager to negotiate the terms for international release of a Japanese-developed game with a 3rd party company. It’s not like they can just upload a ROM.

Also, both Nintendo and Sega would want to choose a release window that would get the most exposure. Launching in May wouldn’t get nearly as much attention. This could have been ready for months for all we know.

The game is 25 years old. Why rush it now?

          • Armane

Perhaps I worded that badly, I meant 7 months ago we didn’t know when/if they were going to be released internationally, and considering the amount of work required (translating the menus, co-ordinating with Nintendo, and getting them all rated by the various censor boards) we could only wonder why they hadn’t announced anything as the work would have had to have started back then anyway.

So it’s easy for you to say “why rush it now”, now that we know they are all coming out (with another series on the way; for Japan at least), and speculating why it took this long has been made redundant.

          • http://www.googlepants.com/ Wizard of Odyssey

Well that’s fair enough. Maybe they didn’t give out release dates because we’d be all “BUT WE WANT IT NOWWWWWWWW”

          • Armane

I’m not saying they should have given release dates that far in advance, I doubt they would have been able to do so anyway. They could however have announced them as TBD for the West alleviating fears of a repeat of the Sega Ages series.

If it’s like sonic 1 in “3D” it won’t be that good IMO, and..not to be a troll but this game hasn’t aged well and the gameplay is very frustrating

  • Pockystix

as long as it’s not THAT 3D altered beast

you know the one. . .

    • Juan Andrés Valencia

Am I the only one that didn’t mind it? It’s not good (Specially if you play another ultra gory beat em up like the Splatterhouse remake) but it’s very entertaining.

oh i’ve ever played this game before..
you can power up into mythical beasts like werewolf, gargoyle, etc from a normal human..
If I remember, this game’s original name is Juuouki..
remind me of Juuouken a.k.a. beast king fist..
ohh well, the werewolf attacks with a punch resembling to juuouken..
so actually juuouken was inspired from this..

  • wharcraff
